... this attractive cookbook is a real winner as well as a bargain. It's filled with easy to use and scrumptious recipes (I loved the "Tangy Lime-Peppercorn Catfish"), interesting and fun catfish lore, cooking tips, tips for the diet-conscious, you name it. The subject of catfish cooking is thoroughly covered, from Deep South and Cajun/Creole dishes to foreign dishes. What I love the most about this cookbook is that it contains every recipe you will need to cook a complete catfish meal--soups, condiments, main dishes, side dishes, even desserts. Congratulations to the authors on a job well done!

Catfish farming in Alabama is a relatively new industry: it began in 1960 when three individuals helped create the industry from scratch. FISHING FOR GOLD: THE STORY OF ALABAMA'S CATFISH INDUSTRY traces the roots of this essential modern-day part of Alabama tradition, revealing the challenges to the enterprise, the maintenance of catfish farms over fifty-four of Alabama's sixty-seven counties, and how the industry has blossomed to be a mainstay of the state's economy. FISHING FOR GOLD will interest both business book readers and especially any with ties to Alabama or fishing.

I have been an avid Peacock Bass fisherman for the last five years. I use to fish for Peacock Bass in the same way that I would fish for Largemouth Bass. Needless to say I did not have much success with worms or spinner baits. My brother gave me a copy of Carlos Hidalgo's book as a gift. I was amazed at how informative and helpful this book was. It made me realize how many things I was doing wrong when fishing for Peacocks. My brother and I go fishing for Peacocks in the Miami Airport Lakes at least once a week. We catch an average of a dozen Peacocks per trip. We would like to thank Mr. Carlos Hidalgo for his wonderful book.

Tickling Catfish Is Interesting Fun!

Tickling Catfish is a romp through the weirder aspects of Texas as seen through the eyes of Jerry Craven, a good old boy turned college professor. Using many of the typical devices of the tall tale, Jerry presents a laid-back series of short essays that tell us about some interesting and strange Texas beliefs and practices. To make the book even more interesting, he throws in accounts of the many other places he's lived, including Malaysia and South America. Beyond that, he explores the netherworld of English, with such items as palindromes and how to speak Texan with correct grammar and pronunciation. I've known Jerry for over 20 years and have always appreciated his keen eye for detail, his sympathetic appreciation of all kinds of nonsense, and his love of irony. I think you will, too.

We have all heard jokes about hot weather, especially those of us who live in Texas. But it would be difficult to find a better collection of stories, jokes and tall tales of dry spells than Rana Williamson's "When the Catfish Had Ticks: Texas Drought Humor". While working on her doctoral thesis on the Texas Seven Year Drought of the 1950's at TCU, Dr. Williamson, a native of Junction, Texas, conducted many personal interviews with folks all over the state. As people told her of despair and hopelessness as their world dried up, they also told her jokes they had heard that made life a little less hopeless. These anecdotes were just as much a part of their memories as the dead grass and devastation. She has chronicled these jokes into a wonderful "coffee table favorite". Quoting simple farmers, famous authors of Texana literature, and folks remembering a childhood without precipitation, this book is a pleasure to read cover-to-cover or one entry a! t a time. As I suffer through this record-setting Fort Worth summer, I often find myself quoting one-liners from "When the Catfish Had Ticks" as I chat with people about the heat.
