I really like this book. I borrowed it from my sister-in-law first and wanted to copy so many pages, it just made more sense to buy the book. I have made some of the play dough and have just bought the ingredients to make some sparkle glue. The only thing is I'm not sure what to put the glue in when it's done.

I'll admit I am a friend of the DeCaria family so I may be biased. But all bias aside I've sampled many of the recipes in this book and I have to tell you this is one delicious cookbook. The heart of an Italian family is truly the kitchen, family, food and the kitchen table is what it is all about. If you want the real deal Italian cuisine on your table pick up this book. Buon Appetito!

Every recipe a winner

Tapas is the kind of cookbook that becomes a favorite: Simple, yet elegant recipes and a photo showing the final product for every recipe. If the recipe calls for an unusual ingredient, a suggested, readily available substitute is listed. One recipe calls for skinning almonds and states that this step is time-consuming and can be skipped (LOL). Well, that's a good thing.

Tapa comes from the Spanish verb tapar, to cover, a lid, and the practice of covering a glass of wine outdoors with a piece of bread, then eventually adding toppings to that bread. Those clever Spaniards. Now tapas are served before lunch and dinner or as party nibbles. Or a variety of tapas can be served as a small meal.

This book lists items in four categories: Meat and poultry, Vegetables, Cheese and Eggs, and Fish and Seafood. A few recipes include Melon, chorize, and artichoke salad (think of these flavors and textures); Crispy chicken and ham croquettes (the one I will try first); Fava beans with serrano ham (fava beans are highly regarded in Spain); Cracked marinated olives (you should see the photo!); Spanish spinach and tomato pizzas; Tortilla espanola (made with eggs, potatoes, and onions), and Crab tartlets.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend. After reading through it last night, I have decided this cookbook needs to sit on my shelf, so I plan to return to the store of purchase for another. A true gift-worthy cookbook for people who love to try new things.

At grandmother's table

Grandmovey always used recipies from her book for special occassions. Her mashed potatoes are my favorite, and the leg of lamb. I've tried several of the side dishes. I only wish I could cook as well as grandmovey. I encourage you to buy my grandmother's book. Each recipe was a favorite with a family relative. This book is great for learning what meals were like back in the 50s and 60s. (I am also the author's granddaugher.)

A glorious array of dishes reflecting refined taste and styl

As an inveterate collector of cookbooks and a dedicated chef, it takes a great deal to impress me. I was impressed by this elegant collection of old southern recipes finely woven together with "...brief vignettes of the charmed life in Tampa at the turn of the century..." Compiled by The Chiselers, Inc., a nonprofit organization of women dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Moorish buildings of the Old Tampa Bay Hotel, the cookbook is a feast for the eyes as well as for the palate. Its concoctions range from Cream Of Peanut Soup through Drunken Drumsticks to Sticky Toffee Pudding and Key Lime Cookies. The cuisine is elegant, irresistible and evocative of the deep south. For those of refined taste and style, a glorious array of dishes!

Should be required reading for any woman in the food biz
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Someone gave me this book when it was first published in 1987, probably with the comment that I should open my own restaurant someday, a not-unusual thought from my well-meaning and well-fed friends back then. In 1989 when I did start a gourmet food products company I evidently failed to read or maybe to understand the stories of the women chefs profiled here or perhaps I might have had second thoughts before I committed myself to years of working around the clock and more than a decade without a vacation. On the whole I have no regrets, but this should be required reading for any woman thinking to open a restaurant or a catering company or any variant of a food business. And for young women at culinary school it should be required reading so they understand what it was like in the bad old days, before so many women of talent blew open the doors and made it impossible ever after to keep women out of the profession.

I bought this book for my cousin's bridal shower. (It was on her registry.) The day it arrived, it was raining, and the book's pages got oh-so-slightly crinkled. However, it was still in ok condition to give as a gift.

This book is apparently famous in cooking circles, which is why I needed it for my cookery course at college. I was honestly pleasantly surprised with it, it had a lot of detailed colour photos, sections for each countries own unique foods, a lot of French and Continental cooking (of course). I could really recommend this book to anyone who is serious about cooking or even someone who is just curious about it.

This book is definitly the Chef's bible. If you're studing in a culinary school this book is a must! It's so complete, remember being chef isn't just cook nice, being a chef means have knowledge, knowing why food has reactions, why we have to cook in certain ways, etc... this book will help you to get that!

A Classic

This is a must for any aspiring culinarian or anyone interested in fine dining. Works excellent both as a reference and also full of recipes. This tome was originally written in French so be careful when purchasing that if you are not fluent in French that you get the English translated version. Happy Cooking.
