Dr. Chase was a traveling physician who compiled this book of "recipes and information for everybody" including a wide array of information and home remedies for families. At the time it was published, individual receipes to cure a sick horse or sick child were quite expensive. Dr. Chase's book of 800 recipes for health remedies, drinks, livestock cures, etc. was a bargain and a mainstay in households across the continent.

Sections include:
Merchant and Grocer Department
Saloon Department
Medical Department
Tanner,Shoe, & Harness Maker Department
Painter Department
Blacksmith Department
Tinner Department
Gunsmith Department
Jeweler Department
Farrier Department
Cabinet-maker Department
Barber Department
Baker/Cooking Department
Domestic Department
Miscellaneous Department

The information included is wildly varied and fascinating! Dr. Chase even advocates humane treatment of animals (includes illustrations for saving injured horses), instructs young people in how they can be successful, etc. etc. etc.

Just a wonderful book of frontier/19th century wisdom! I have the 38th edition, which was published in 1866.

I have the later 1866 edition, which has 150 additional "recipes". The following is a description of that edition:

Amusing anecdotes and great recipes for both the novice and experienced cook. Much appreciated are the serving suggestions, variations, and the nutritional analysis of each recipe. This is NOT an expensive, glossy, coffee table cook book with difficult to follow recipes that have a dubious outcome. Rather you are enticed into the recipe by the author's introduction and entertained by the one liners. Great for the single guy/gal on your list, the "Foodies" and anyone who likes to cook. Enjoy!!

The layout is very "useable" and the recipes are applicable for "first-time" cooks as well as the experienced cook. The additional "hints" from the recipe contributors are very useful.

So often, the oversized cookbook, resembling more a "coffee table" book contains recipes made only for the likes of Martha Stewart. This book provides simple, elegant, and quick recipes that many a novice cook can master. If you can get your hands on a copy now 7 years after the publishing date, don't pass up the opportunity!
