I just finished reading the book "Life With Ol' Mike: Wit & Wisdom on Life, Love and Happiness," a compilation of Eagle columns written by the late Mike Oatman. The first thing I thought of after finishing the book was how sorry I am I didn't get to know him when he was alive.

What a wise man he was -- and what a treasure he left for all of us to share. The way Ol' Mike puts life into words is an absolute gift from God. I urge you to read this book, and buy some extra copies for those you care about most. Profits from book sales go to the American Cancer Society. I promise you that you'll never look at life the same way again. Thank God for Ol' Mike!

childhood memories

my dad was always a big fan of npr (as well as steppenwolf, but thats an entirely different article) so car rides were always filled that soothing radio call of theirs. little chills itself was a series of cassettes that he invested in for said car rides; the stories are not so much hackneyed, just popular urban legends. the fact that they came through the car's surrounding speakers just simply added to the magic of my childhood and impressed treasured memories. these stories do carry suspense, and are sure to be remembered for years to come.

Fantastic radio drama, well worth hearing!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-17
This radio drama is amazing! It is without a doubt one of the funniest radio plays since The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's an amazing script that kept me interested and laughing from start to finish. If this were a book, I'd say it was a page-turner that you couldn't put down. But since it's an audio drama, I'll just say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

But there's more than that! It's also wonderfully produced, with excellent sound effects and a musical score that does a great job setting the mood.

The vocal talents of Patricia Tallman and Claudia Christian of Babylon 5 fame are put to good use. Acting in a radio drama, there are no visual cues to help tell the story -- all that can be used is a voice, and both actresses do a great job! Whatever the scene, they make it real, the performance makes good use of their talent.

All in all, it's a great set to have!

The Goon Show was the last great Radio show before Television destoyed the medium.

About 1/3 of the shows recordings still exist. From the best of my knowledge, and my collection, these ones don't. If you are a Goons fan, buy it. If you are not a Goons Fan, why are you reading this review? Buy some of the recordings available thru Amazon.Com, become a fan and then buy this book.

A warning - do not read on public transport, as fellow passengers will look at you as if you are a loony when you start laughing out loud.

One of the best films to highlight Ham Radio accurately ... much better than the lame attampts in modern film. And Bonita is a cute little actress... The plots are ok too.

Great insight into a fascinating subject

I can't recommend this book enough. It tells the story of a pivotal time in the development of musical history and culture, back when the participants themselves would never have guessed that they were making history. In a time before mass communication and cable TV, The Louisiana Hayride broadcast and promoted the emerging music to an audience almost nationwide. No doubt it propelled the genre and the artists toward their history making futures. The author paints a detailed picture of the genre that makes you feel as if you were there yourself. Her style of writing draws you into the story. I highly recommend this book for everyone.

While I've never reviewed books put out by the ARRL, and Jim Kearman-kr1s before, the only thing I can say is this, "It's About Time" this very excellent book was done justice. Like most "League" publications, it makes a very excellent book for a beginning ham, or a veteran of the tubes and wires, over fancy circuits. Whatever the case, I can say as a very proud ham, myself, that if you're on a budget, READ THIS BOOK FIRST! Not only will you enjoy reading this book, (it's plain fun) it will also give you ideas. Certainly,as far as reference books go, a copy belongs in everyone's library!
