Great set of speeches

This is a set of 5 tapes which includes Dr. King's 4 talks that were part of the Massey Lecture series in Canada and his 1967 Christmas Eve sermon he gave at his church in Atlanta. The tapes also include a couple of panel discussions. These discussions are reactions to Dr. King's speeches. One of the discussions is between two academics and their views of Dr. King's protests against the Vietnam War. The other discussion is a larger group and it focuses on race relations in Canada and the U.S. For people who are only familiar with Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech, the four lectures may be disappointing because they are lectures and, as such, they are not delivered in the manner that many people associate with King. However, the lectures are great if you want to understand Dr. King's thinking during this time period because he goes into great detail outlining the justifications for his views on the Vietnam war, the War on Poverty, and racism. In my view, the 1967 Christmas Eve sermon is one of Dr. King's best speeches ever. It is certainly better than the Nobel Prize acceptance speech and, I think, the April 4, 1967 anti-war speech that he gave (what many historians identify as his first major anti-war speech). In this sermon, King elaborates on his theme of the interconnectedness of all people, but he also has a sequence toward the end of the speech on "I watched this dream turn into a nightmare" which is amazing because you get a real sense of the dispair that Dr. King felt at times during the movement because the country just didn't seem to really understand what his philosophy of justice and nonviolence was all about. It is an amazing speech. I am glad that it is finally available for people to hear.
My only complaint is that this set is only available on cassette tape and not as a cd.

This book is rich with ideas and provides a thought-provoking analysis of television and its impact on culture. It would no doubt be interesting to anthropologists of modern culture, sociologists, and the general public. We often forget about the powerful influence of this pervasive medium, but its impact is undeniable. By making this implicit impact explicit, Consuming Environments helps us become more reflective consumers of television content.

Reeves and Campbell cut through all of the drug war crap in this superb cultural analysis. The role of the news -- especially the television network news -- is clear in the creation of a major "drug problem" and the need for a war on drugs. Need to know why the jails are overflowing with drug users? As this book points out, the Reagan-era news loved this "lock 'em up" story.

This is an utterly fascinating book, written by someone who has been watching television for more than 40 years. In that time, he has interviewed just about EVERYBODY in the business. So, if you're in the business, or want to GET in the business, or just have a fascination with the producers, directors, writers AND stars, get this book. You won't be disappointed.
I'm intrigued by the variety of people Bob Kubey has chosen for this book.
This can be nothing but a valuable resource to all who study media and television.

The Xtal Set Society sells several books on crystal radio including back volumes of the society newsletter. Crystal Radio: History Fundamentals and Design was one of the first and it is still one of the best. Contrary to the above information, all of their books are still in print, and you can find the XSS easily by typing in the keywords "crystal radio" on most of the major search sites.

I AM A RADIO AND TELEVISION HISTORIAN AND HAVE A VAST PRIVATE LIBRARY OF BROADCAST RECORDINGS AND FILM MEDIA. THIS COLLECTION OF BBC MATERIAL IS AN INTERESTING LOOK AT THE WAR AS COVERED BY THE BRITS. WE SENT TROUPS 'OVER THERE' WHILE TO THEM 'OVER THERE' WAS LITERALLY THEIR OWN HOMES AND TOWNS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS COLLECTION ISSUED AS A SERIES OF UNEDITED BROADCASTS.ALTHOUGH OF SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE,THE EXCERPTS INCLUDED HERE,WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW,ARE VERY BRIEF. ADAM 8/19/05
