I grew up in San Pedro California and anyone listening at that time can remember the shout "burn baby burn" (even before the riots)or "give me four and a half more bars" where Magnificent would put the needle back on the record randomly and extend the record another 3-4 minutes. This brother is and was as much a part of the fabric of American radio as any other person as Dick Clark and Alan Freed (without the payola charge). A Berry Gordy ,Smokey Robinson,Gamble and Huff of the radio, a

It was not all that long ago that radio was king. Turn back the clock and re-kindle your imagination as George Burns and Gracie Allen and special guest Jack Benny guide you through this magical time.
In this classic episode of the Burns and Allen radio show, the Burnes meet Jack Benny for lunch at the Brown Derby. Notoriously stingy, Jack dodges paying the check, but this event reminds the couple that there was a time when Jack was not so cheap! Laugh along as they try to re-awaken the spirit of their old friend, "Generous Jack"!
Collectors and fans of Burns and Allen, Jack Benny and classic radio comedies will be tickled to have this gem in their collection.

A seminal contribution towards understanding a masterpiece

Review Date: 2004-03-05
As a lifelong and devoted student of Lewis -- and one who has read, re-read, written about, and lectured on Mere Christianity -- I was startled and deeply gratified to learn that the master conceived his touchstone idea, composed the masterpiece that conveys it, and perfected his popular, lean, direct apologetic style under what can only be regarded as the tutelage of the BBC. The late Justin Phillips (who died before completing his book: the manuscript was edited and brought to publication by his daughter Laura Treneer) first provides a genuinely riveting war-time context as only a lifelong BBC-man could. He then captures, with ample narrative skill and astonishingly adroit quotations from correspondence, the "Beeb's" persistence and scalpel-like judgment, as well as CSL's reservations, vexations, achievement, and finally his overwhelming success. Along the way the reader gets a concrete feel for Lewis's travel, work-habits, friendships and homelife which, though not entirely new, are utterly fresh (for example, the contributions of Jill Freud . . . ) And as a bonus we are treated to a chapter on Dorothy L. Sayers and the BBC: The corporation was sorely overmatched! From now on, Richard Baxter + CSL = Mere Christianity must become Baxter + Lewis X the BBC = Mere Christianity and a good deal of the master's pellucid style.

When I was 10, my best friend & I would arrive home from school & put on a lip-sync production of Cabbage Soup EVERY DAY. This is one of the funniest renditions of the Rapunzel fairy tale I've ever heard. From Max the annoying narrator bear to the talking vegetables in Dame Gawful's garden, this is a comic gem which exercises, not only kids' funny bones, but their imaginations as well.
Clever dialogue, expressive readings & a decently original musical score highlight this superb rendering.

About treating elections as a spectator sport
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

Review Date: 2001-02-25
In Calling Elections: The History Of Horse-Race Journalism, Thomas Littlewood (Professor Emeritus of Journalism at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) provides an excellent and informative survey of how journalism came to report on the presidential selection and election process as if it were a day at the race track, complete with such metaphors as "dark horse candidate" and "neck and neck at the finish line". Calling Elections reveals how treating elections as a spectator sport was the result of an intermixture of gambling, politics, the press, sports language intermingling with political rhetoric, a government spoils system, the development of modern statistical polling, the involvement of partisan organizations, and the perverse conviction of many 20th century journalists that substantive political presentations were not interesting to the people who bought their papers, listened to their broadcast news reports, or tuned in to their television segments. Calling Elections is "must" reading for journalism students, political science students, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the politics of news reporting and the news reporting of politics.

The construction process is as follows:
1) First, a backbone is fitted with bulkheads to form a balsawood 'skeleton'.
2) The hull is shaped using thin planking strips.
3) A thin fibreglass 'skin' is placed on the hull and impregnated with resin.
4) You'll need to build a keel bulb, make a mould of it.
5) Then, melt some lead fishing weights and cast your own lead keel bulb, shaped like a torpedo!
6) The keel is then constructed.
7) The internal structure is then built, to support the servos, r/c receiver and batteries.
8) The r/c equipment, servos, switch, wiring, etc. is installed.
9) The deck is constructed.
10) The keel is CAREFULLY installed into the hull.
11) Painting.
12) Deck fittings are then installed carefully.
13) Then, the aluminium mast is fabricated and the rigging is fitted.
14) The sails are made from Architectural Drafting Film.
15) Hatch covers, with water resistant rubber linings are fabricated.
16) The rudder is constructed.
17) The yacht is set up and fine-tuned.
The book is simple and looks easy to follow. I jumped at the chance to buy it as I've wanted something like this ever since seeing plans for a racing yacht similar to the RacingSparrow in some Readers Digest book of things to make, along with a Thames barge back in high school. Sadly, the library burnt down and I have no idea what happened to that book. Seeing Bryn Heveldt's book brought back a lot of memories and I just had to have it!
No regrets, this book will teach you how to build your own radio-controlled racing yacht with minimal tools, and (mostly) easily attainable materials and components. Buy a copy now!
