Excellent Second-Hand History Source of TV Producers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-10
This is an excellent second-hand source for media history about several big-name TV producers. I bought it to obtain an overview of Roy Huggins' career in television and this helpful text provided a lot of insight on Huggins as well as other big-name TV producers from the past. If you are into media history from the 1950s to the 1980s, then the chapters on Huggins as well as Glen A. Larson and Michael "Miami Vice" Mann should fascinate and inform you.

Simply marvelous! Now I understand why I loved I love Lucy.

Review Date: 2006-05-18
Lisa Phillips is a master interviewer and engaging storyteller--in person as well as in print, as I found out when I attended a signing at my local library. If she appears at a book store or library near you, don't miss the opportunity to hear her read from this wonderful new book. Lisa is an NPR insider who knows what to ask when interviewing people who interview people all the time. This informative and entertaining book will delight all public radio fans!

This book of profiles is well written and very engrossing. Through a quick and lively prose, the author brings each of her subjects to vivid life right there on the page. I've long been curious about many of the people behind the voices on public radio and this book scratches that itch. I feel like I know them all so much better now when I tune into their programs. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and recomend it highly to all fans of public radio.

there is only one thing to say about john irsfeld: he is an exceptional writer. composed over a number of years, these stories are subtle, diverse, fluent, and mature. irsfeld's narratives exude confidence and flare. i can only suggest one thing, and that is to supplement a reading of this text with irsfeld's three novels: coming through, little kingdoms, and rats alley. highly, highly recommended. an overlooked master of modern letters.

This book bridges the gap between school theory and practice in RF power amplifier design and construction. This is the best book on the subject that I have seen in 40 years.

A comprehensive guide for Highpower HF Amplifier Design

This is one fine book that deals with all the thoretical, practical and thermal aspects of Highpower Broadband amplifiers using Solidstate devices. Eventhough the examples and discussions are centered mainly around the Motorola RF Transistors, the principles can be extended to semiconductor devices manufactured by any manufacturer. The authors have dealt with the subject matter in a thorough and a very easy to understand manner.I have been reading H.O.Granberg's articles in QST,RF Design and Motorola Application Notes since the early 80s as they were always packed with his tremendous experience in the field of Solidstate RF design. No matter whether you are a professional designer or an advanced radio amateur, you are sure to find it a gem in your collection of technical books.

What a fine read. It even sounds like radio, which is an accomplishment in itself. And as regards the South Pacific, it's not a bad sound at all. Seward has a great ear, and the book is actually interesting. You learn something about this 'exotic' place at the same time you enjoy learning it!

highschool education. I recommend it to people interested in
old radios based on electronics tubes.

I had just read George O. Smith's The Complete Venus Equilateral. I was so intrigued by the pseudoscience, that I wanted to understand the science behind it. As a mechanical engineer and a licensed electrician, I can understand a little bit of electronics, but it just doesn't 'stick'. When I read this 1933 textbook, I felt like - just for a minute - I actually UNDERSTOOD vacuum tubes!

By way of full disclaimer, I just received this book. I previously searched for customer reviews but could find none. I took a chance on the rather skimpy reviews and ordered the book. Am I ever pleased!

Having read through just the first chapter, I am impressed with the authors writing style. My sense is that the book is tutorial in nature, delivers an easy-to-read discussion of all the architectural components needed understand a receiver, and is full of specific examples of the topics discussed. The book is not a "cookbook" with specific circuit examples. The book approaches receiver design from the standpoint of architecture at a systems level with discussion of the specification, considerations, and other characteristics needed to understand good receiver design.

Chapter 1 "introduces many of the basic concepts". I found that chapter one was a good review of the basic concepts more so than an introduction. Review of dB math, standard use of dBHz, dbK, etc. Following topics include frequency, propagation, and wavelength, transmission lines, two-port networks, matching and power transfer, modulation theory (AM, FM, PM) in the time and frequency domain, and noise theory. Each topic is short in the sense that a 140+ page chapter cannot do justice to a complete coverage of each topic. That written, the authors provide clear explanations with great examples of each topic of discussion. I found the discussion of transmission line theory very well written, did not overwhelm the reader excessive high-level math, and covered the key transmission line concepts that a receiver designer needs to master. The authors tell "war stories" to discuss real-life issues illustrating why mastering each topic is important in practice. A discussion of transmission line propagation using "bounce diagrams" was as clear as I've ever read.

More to follow as I read through the book...

Note: The copy I am reading has many errors. There is no email address to reach the authors and Noble does not appear to monitor (or respond) to email. It would be nice to provide corrections or have an errata sheet of known errors. So, Kevin and Tom, if you read this and plan on revising the book...
