Eclectic Recipes for Alaska

This cookbook is interesting to read and the recipes sound delicious. The one I have tried, the bruschetta at the beginning of the book, was very successful. I should have expected, but was surprised to see, recipes with so many different cultural influences. "Exotic" ingredients might be a draw back for Alaska bush cooks.

Alaskan restaurant critic and food writer Kim Severson, with the assistance of restaurant chef Glenn Denkler, has compile more than 120 superbly crafted recipes in "The New Alaskan Cookbook: Recipes From The Last Frontier's Best Chefs", each of which reflects the very best of contemporary Alaskan cuisine. Featuring a Recipe List, an informative introduction, information about the chefs who contributed creations are featured, and 'A Not About The Recipes', the dishes are arranged in sections devoted to Appetizers; Soups, Salads and Sandwiches; Entrees; Side dishes and Beverages; Sauces, Stocks, and Other Basics; and Desserts. The thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes themselves range from Alaskan Seafood Chowder; Wild Alaska Snapper with Stir-Fry Vegetable Curry and Quick Fried Noodles; Grilled Kodiak Scallops with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce; and Cured Oven-Roasted Duck Breasts with Dried Cherry and Green Peppercorn Sauce; to Roast Cornish hen with King Prawn; Twice-Baked Gorgonzola Potatoes; Sweet Onion Jam; and Yukon Sourdough Bread Pudding. Enhanced with two appendices (The Restaurants and Food Resources), "The New Alaska Cookbook" is a strongly recommended addition to any personal and community library cookbook collection!

A Classic -- with great advice

I bought my copy of this book while I was a college student in the '60s. I still use it. When I was first married, and penniless, I paid attention to the basic advice: own a good knife, always serve fresh bread, real butter, and wine. Sometimes that was dinner. When we entertained, we added minestrone... Great memories as well as great recipes.

Thoughts for food, good on both counts.

I bought my copy of the original edition in the early 80s. Bought this edition, kept the original...both are great works. The introduction itself is sage advice for the strapped student (concerning kitchen equipment, etc), and practical recipes abound throughout the book (End-of-Month Stroganoff is one of my old standards). Even if you own many, many cookbooks, do add this one to the collection. You'll find quite a few inexpensive hints, tips, and morsels.

Marvelous alternatives to beans and toast.

I bought this book in 1979 as a starving student, and it has saved my life more than once. In lean times, I've been forced to resort to sell my books, but this one stays. The recipes are creative, inexpensive, tasty, and most are simple to make. Ann Roger's book allows the starving artist to eat well without sacraficing supplies, the hobo to put something together over the open fire, the student to eat AND buy books, all while relishing the scent wafting from the pot (or oven) and savoring the flavor once it's in the mouth. Also, this book isn't just about the main course; she includes salads and snacks and tasty desserts. Just because you're low on funds, doesn't mean you have to suffer! Enjoy!

I am a cookbook aficionado. I own quite a lot of them, and I admit that many books I buy simply because they are so much fun to read. Readability is definitely why I bought "A Cookbook for Poor Poets and Others," but that's not why I gave it five stars - it also has great recipes and good kitchen advice. The recipes are variously healthy or not so healthy, cheap or slightly more expensive, easy or a little more complex. There is a lot of variety in this book. The author emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, but there is also a nod to real life and its demands in that she also lists plenty of meals you can make out of cans. I definitely recommend it.

It's hard to believe it's diet food

Review Date: 2007-05-17
Every recipe I've tried so far has been delicious. I love that each recipe has a photo because that's usually how I choose "what's for dinner." I'm trying to loose the last 10 pounds and it's such a relief not to have to figure out the caloric value for every meal -- nutritional info is provided with each recipe. Portions are generous (not restaurant-size "generous" but generous for anything you'd consider to be diet food!) My husband, who is not dieting, has been impressed with the recipes I've tried too.

GREAT FOOD!

I've bought some diet cookbooks in the past and the recipies in them taste like diet food, however, the recipies in this cookbook are great! They taste like normal food and its helpful because it will tell you portion size and calories for those who want to Diet. I love this cookbook. My husband also likes it because there is a picture of every recipe. He'll pick out whatever looks good. Buy this book, and you wont be dissappointed!

My husband had to loss a couple pounds for a new job he was trying to get hired for and I decided that I would join him, cause hey what girl doesn't want to shed a little extra weight. We have two young boys, 6 and 2 years, and were worried that if we statred dieting they would be effected. Long story short, rather then trying fad diets or premade meals, we decided it would be best to just change the way we eat to something healthier, which is what lead us to the Dieters Cookbook.

Its wounderful, so far between the two of us, we have lost 20 pounds in three weeks. Now its not all the cook book, we do have a cross trainer at home, a weight bench and two young ones that keep us moving. But the cookbook gives me a great place to find easy to make, healthy meals, that even taste good. (For the boys, we just give them an adult portionand let them eat as much as they like, this allows us not to worry about harming their growth.)The two week jump off menu is also a great tool, even if you don't follow it, it allows you an example of how to plan your meals. And planning has been our best friend, nolonger does it turn 7 o'clock at night and we end up running to pick something up cause, A) we didn't have anything ready to eat or b) there was nothing in the house to make something. I work often into the late afternoon, early night and have found several recipes that I can make ahead and leave just mini notes for my husband to finish up. For example, tonight we'll be having turkey burgers w/ cranberry dressing and oven baked french fries, everyhting is made up in the fridge, all hubbie has to do is put the fries in the oven and place the burgers on the grill, walla healthy easy and no McDonalds, Burgerking or Wendy's needed.

This cookbook, is not a mericale diet, it wont garentee you have the same success as my spouse and I, but it is a great tool, even if you just want a cookbook around with healthy low fat meals in it for when you feel the urge to cook something outside a box. But don't take my word for it, try it and see what you think.

We have lived or visited all over the world, and we have eaten some fantastic meals. This book tells you how to prepare the best of these meals, and they taste just like they did overseas. Every recipe results in the best meal you've ever tasted. Why this book is out of print is a total mystery to me. When we can find a copy, we give them as presents (normally to newlyweds), and we always get rave reviews. One problem: the recipes are time consuming--not many recipes lend themselves to after-work quickie meals. But if you have the time, the food is incredible!

Fantastic. All recipes consistently good.

I am a cooking enthusiast, and have a very extensive collection of cookbooks. This book has been my absolute favorite for over a decade. This is the most useful cookbook I have ever owned. The number of recipies is incredible, and include plenty to keep the novice cook or professional level chef busy. Craig Claiborne is extremely reliable in providing recipies that work perfectly. Unusual ingredients are rarely required. There are many very unique recipies I have never seen variations of anywhere else that taste absolutely heavenly. Many different nationalities are covered. This cookbook is pure gold, and is the greatest cookbook ever written. This is far and above the most valuable cookbook in my collection.

This is one of the most "usable" cookie cookbooks I've seen. I collect cookbooks and have a good basis for comparison. Like all the other Gooseberry Cookbooks, the style of composition makes it a fun book to use. I first bought a copy of this book several years ago and didn't really open it up and look at it. When headed to visit our daughter several states away, I was looking for something I could take to her as a gift and saw "Old Fashioned Country Cookies" on the shelf so grabbed it up and gave it to her. Sitting around her kitchen table, I finally had the time to REALLY look at its pages. I'm flipping pages and thinking..."Good grief, WHY did I give this book away...these recipes look fabulous!!" I asked her for some paper and a pen and started jotting down recipes I thought I wanted to try. That proved to be a finger-cramping adventure. I knew I just HAD to purchase another copy. Couldn't let all those gems get away. I did just that and haven't been sorry. It's wonderful to have so many good recipes in one book. It's the first one I reach for when the urge to make cookies pops into my head. I also love the country-style graphics and the hints sent in by Gooseberry readers. If I were trapped on a desert island and could only have one publishers cookbooks, I'd opt for the ones by Gooseberry Patch...they are GREAT! If you order this book, you won't be sorry. And my daughter LOVED it as a gift too!

My mother made all the recipes in this graphically appealing book.
It may be why I never learned to cook but then again, I loved reading the stories of food memories, fragrances and childhood moments. Have you noticed this is now fashionably called "comfort food"...well it always was that, it's just taken the chefs of the world to catch-on. As a mid-westerner, I'm thoroughly enjoying this classic book. I can smell my Mom's homemade bread as we speak.

This neat little cookbook is a must-buy. My mother's been gone for thirty-six years, but not a day goes by that I don't think of all the wonderful things she used to do for me, not the least of which was her marvelous cooking. Authors Udell and Cutler have assembled a collection of the kind of mouth watering, home-concocted recipes that were characteristic of our mothers' generation. Wait till you try mother Jesse Johnson's recipe for Wild Rice Casserole!

Review Date: 2008-06-14
This cookbook is just excellent! I've been asked to share the recipe every time I take a food from this cookbook to a social gathering. I've focused largely on the soup and salad recipes because that's what I like, and all of them have given me gourmet quality flavorful foods using interesting herbs and spices that are easy to find. The Chicken Almond Salad is the best and the Potato Chowder, Tomato Dill Soup and Spanish Country Soup are my favorites soups. I will say that if you don't want to spend time in the kitchen, this cookbook may not be for you because many of the recipes are a little labor intensive. Also, as you might expect with a restaurant cookbook, many of the recipes are not compatible with a fat-restricted diet (some can easily be modified however).
That being said, I would highly recommend this cookbook for its recipes that consistently turn out products that taste absolutely wonderful.

Eating at the Ovens of Brittany was a real treat when I was in graduate school at UW-Madison. I've used this cookbook for about 20 years and it's still my favorite. The Triple Chip Cookies have become my signature recipe and I'm in trouble with my friends if I don't bring them to a gathering. The blueberry muffins are my all time favorites; hearty bread muffins, not sweet and cake-like. I just ordered my second copy of the cookbook. I wore the first one out!

This book is very practical. Easy to follow. More importantly its recepies are not experimental, invented Hungarian cerepies but rather REAL Hungarian cooking done in Hungary. It therefore reflects the traditional cooking of the Hungarian people. I would love to buy it for my children (daughters) to familiarize themselves with their ancestors cooking.

You don't get any more authentic than this book. Most other cookbooks are phoney. This is the real thing. I am Hungarian and this is how my Mother cooked and now so am I. This book is a collection of standard Hungarian recipes that would be familiar to any Hungarian cook. It includes chapters on soups, main dishes, side dishes, and desserts. Each chapter begins with a brief description of the type of dish and its role in the food culture of Hungary, discussing, for instance, what were foods were readily available on the farm. The recipes are provided with both their English and Hungarian names. One helpful feature is that each recipe includes not only a list of ingredients, but also a list of utensils needed for the recipe. In keeping with Hungarian farm traditions, most of the recipes call for butter, sour cream, eggs, and one or more types of meat, especially pork. Virtually all the recipes call for fresh foods, not canned foods or convenience mixes, but there are few exotic ingredients needed.

This book would make a great reference for American cooks who want to create authentic-tasting Hungarian meals. There aren't many fancy recipes in the book for special occasions- -mainly the book is about basic home cooking down on the farm, Hungarian style.
