This is the only book on Italian cooking you will ever need because this book has it all. Ruffino is not only a master cook, she is also a master teacher and this book proves it. The recipes are the best I've ever tasted and my personal favorite has to be the Spinach and Ricotta Crepes with Red Sweet Pepper Fondue--delicioso! This is more than a cookbook--it is an experience you'll want to savor again and again and share with your family and friends.
Extremely easy, but extremely tasty!!! First hand knowledge

This September I went to Tuscany for a visit of the wine country...among our tour of the country side, we were fortunate to tour Giovanna's vineyard, take a cooking lesson from her and eat lunch for which she prepared. Everything she served was not only delicious but extremely EASY preparation. Few ingredients. Nothing too difficult. Look for her wine as well. Awesome. She is probably one of the most energetic people I have ever met. Unpresumptious and Beautiful. This will be the only Italian book I ever use.

I've had this book for a few years and just love it. The Eggplant Rolls with Ham are fabulous and so is the Macaroni with Smoked Mozzarella Sauce, and so is the mushroom and potato soup, but last night I made the Risotto with smoked ham and fennel and everyone LOVED it! Also, I made the peach cream with mascarpone and amaretti and it is so wonderful I had to whip up a second batch today! BUY THIS BOOK!

This is the first, the original, the most seminal, and the best Chinese cookbook ever written. Period, end of story. Irene Kuo is hailed, but in fact her cookbook, in my opinion, is inferior to this one; useful, but secondary. The only missing key and central recipe is Salt Roast Chicken, the best recipe for which is to be found in the Classic Chinese Cookbook by Mai Leung.

I have the '72 edition as well, bought new then, and turned to it again just last night. I agree with mbrown's description of the recipes by category and don't wish to be redundent. What charmed me and Chinese shopkeepers was being able to point to the Chinese characters of various ingredients in the glossary. They were then able to quickly find just what I needed. The recipes are organized, easy to follow, and consistently tasty. I love Chinese cuisine and would be lost without it.

I have the old version of this text, which was
published in 72. I was browsing through cook books at the store and noticed that I had seen all the recipes before and then I realized it was the same book, only a newer cover.
This has been my bible of chinese cooking. The book is very thorough and easy to understand.
It has all the well known chinese recipes
and a description of cooking techniques, such as the proper ways to carve and present meat. All recipes are categorized by
their main ingredient (pork, chicken, beef,
seafood, ect. . ) with a chapter on deserts.
My only qualm with this book is it doesn't provide
the chinese name for many recipes. This might
be because they have been generalize for a
western audience and the chinese names no longer
apply, but I'd like to think that
they are authentic originals from traditional dishes.
If you only own one chinese cooking book, this is
the one to have. Maybe that is why the title
is "THE Chinese Cook Book".

This is an outstanding book. It far outstrips every other Chinese cookbook, including some very good ones by Irene Kuo, Ellen Schrecker, and others. I've been cooking out of it for 20 years. Every recipe I've tried (and I've tried most of them) turns out extraordinary food. Don't bother with the other books. Get this one, if you can find it! The publisher who let this go out of print should be strung up by his thumbs. The world deserves better! A billion stars!

I frequent New Haven for business at Yale, and Claire's is my favorite eatery. Even my non-veggie friends love it. The cookbook has a wide variety of dishes, the Angel Hair Pasta Salad being a family favorite. The Lithuanian Coffee Cake is also good, but doesn't measure up to the original at Claire's. If you are vegetarian or love good food, you'll love this cookbook.

This vegetarian cookbook is one of the best I've read and used yet. I've made several recipes and they are easy, fast, and delicious. Another thing I liked about this cookbook is that most of the ingredients you will have on hand or they are easily accessible at any grocery store. I recommend this book to anyone.

Visiting Claire's Corner Copia for lunch was always a treat when I was growing up in New Haven,
so I was very excited when my mother gave me Claire's cookbook for Christmas 2 years ago. It did not disappoint. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow and many have an Italian flavor. I think the best recommendation I can give is that my meat-loving husband enjoys the meals I have prepared from this cookbook- his favorite is the Eggplant "Meatballs"- try them!

When I lived in New Haven, my favorite lunchtime place was Claire's Corner Copia. My favorite lunch was soup, a mini loaf of bread and carrot cake with butter cream frosting. The frosting was so popular, it was kept in a bucket, and the staff would scoop out a giant portion and slather it on the cake. I'm so glad I can make it from this cookbook now that I'm on the west coast and can't make my weekly trek to Claire's. And the soup! I never had a bad one--they were all great, and they're here, too. Get this book and also Claire's Italian Feast. If you can't get to the restaurant, these recipes are the next best thing.

I had been wanting to visit Cliare's for weveral years. Last summer, I finally ate there, and enjoyed every bite, especially the trifle dessert. Also on the trip, I purchased this cookbook, and absolutely love it. I'm critical of many books, but find this to be very well-written. Each chapter is preceded by personal information, recipes are easy to follow, ingredients easy to find, and the finished product is very delicious. A cookbook that I will use over and over again, unlike many others which are not as easy to work with. The cover is very colorful and enticing. I'm ordering one for a friend, and hoping for a return-visit to Claire's. I'm from New York City, and have lived in four states, and Claire's is one of the best retaurants in the U.S. ----Maure, in Illinois

Along with my wife we tried many Afghan books but we found this book to be easy to follow with extensive recipes from soup to desert. What I liked in particular about this book is the author uses different region's recipes which make this book quite extensive. If you would like to surprise yourself or guests with good food that are not well known around the world, this book is for you.

I absolutely love this cookbook!
I was introduced to the Amiris' cooking in their Sacramento area restaurant, Bamiyan. When I saw that they had their own cookbook, I was hesitant to buy it, thinking that the results of the recipes in a book would pale in comparison with the restaurant's extraordinary fare. I was wrong! The secrets found on the pages of this book rendered results similar to those of a professional chef.
One of the most extraordinary things about this book is its simplicity. The ingredients, the cooking techniques, and the instructions are extremely straight-forward. The ingredients are easy to find and are available year-round. Most dishes rely heavily on fresh vegetables, chicken, fish, beef, or lamb, basmati rice, and simple spicing-- make sure you have Corriander and Cardamom on hand!
In one evening, over the span of about two and a half hours, I managed to prepare a rice dish, four vegetable accompaniments and Fernee, my favorite dessert, comprised of milk, corn starch, sugar, cardamom and pistacio. Simple and delicious!
To unlock your inner Afghan Chef, purchase this book! You won't be disappointed.

What a lifesaver to be able to pick up a book for my son going off to college that was exactly right for his needs. He had no idea about cooking terms, shelf life for foods, how to shop, clean up or what equipment to use. I especially liked the idea that there was a list of how to fix mistakes, which we are sure will happen! Hopefully he will read about how to avoid wasting leftovers. This book is perfect, geared for anyone with no previous cooking experience, and is great for anyone on a tight budget or those cooking for one. He liked the minute meals, since he has no patience to wait for food to cook, and would naturally go for frozen or junk food. With this book there is hope he will eat something healthy.

Peltosaari has included tips for food storage, using leftovers, shelf life, and cooking terms in addition to the many easy recipes. All of the recipes are economical, nutritious, and delicious. If you don't even know how to make scrambled eggs, or if you're on a tight budget (like me!) then this is the book for you!

I purchased this book in the early 90's, being an englishman with a taste for Indian food and a flair for cooking. This has travelled with me ever since. I have used this book as a source for all of my indian meals and the recipes (and I have prepared man of them) are the most authentic dishes you will create. I cooked for an Indian friend a couple of years ago and after I had served him some of my onion bhajis, he paid me the compliment of telling me that they tasted exactly as his mom had prepared back in calcutta. The recipes can be daunting, with endless lists of ingredients - but find yourself a good asion food store and go to task - it's worth it!!!

I have tried many of the recipes in this book and I've never been disappointed. Some of the recipes look overwhelming because of many ingredients but the author has kept the instructions simple and to the point. This book is perfect for newcomers to Asian cooking but it is also good for those that are more experienced. My only complaint is that the index could be expanded to make it easier to look things up.

I tend to associate Williams-Sonoma with snobbery, and was tentative about this book. However, the recipes are darn good and easy, nothing fru-fru. Making homemade is truly a snap, and now our family loves to make and eat it all the time. This book shows how to make all pasta shapes as well as pasta sauces, with every day ingredients.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves pasta!

Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a patriotic and hereditary organization, have submitted a variety of scrumptious handed down Southern family recipes compiled and edited by Lynda Moreau. A guaranteed taste of the Old South. Be sure to try the Tea Cakes.
The members have also included interesting anecdotes of their Confederate ancestors including photographs and illustrations as well as information about the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The Confederate Cookbook is the star of my cookbook collection. The recipes, family favorites of Sons of Confederate Veterans and their ancestors, are the best. Photos of those ancestors and chronicles of their service to the south make this a must have book, not only for cooks, but for anyone interested in preserving Southern heritage. I gave one as a gift and treasure my own copy.

In The Confederate Cookbook: Family Favorites From The Sons Of Confederate Veterans, Lynda Moreau has gathered up 340 diverse and delicious recipes from contemporary Confederate kitchens that range throughout every region of country but evoke the flavor of the Old South as past down to the descendants of the Confederacy through the more than 27,000 member "The Sons of Confederate Veterans", an hereditary organization. From Lynchburg Layered Salad, Southern Meat Loaf, and Skillet Chicken and Gravy, to Great Granny's Confederate Sweet Potato Souffle, Copper Carrot Pennies, and Fried Apple Pies, The Confederate Cookbook is a grand compendium of highly recommended dishes which are further enhanced for the family cook with historic anecdotes and images of identified Confederate soldiers.

I just got my copy and have not had time to try any of the recipes, but the text listed on each contributor is worth the price, along with the pictures of the veterans. The Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the publisher are to be commended for this work. It is time we all took a look back and honored our ancestors who fought for a cause they dearly believed in. To honor them and to preserve our heritage and history as it really happened. In the light of the attacks on their memory and the effort to destroy and/or change history as it really happened, this book should be in the library of every buff of the War of the Rebellion. I can't wait to dig into Great Granny's Confederate Sweet Potato Souffle.

I am the mother of twin infant boys and this book has made this part of my life so much easier. I do not have to sit down and plan our meals and prepare a grocery list anymore! It is such a timesaver and the recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. My husband loves the food, and I love not having to dig around in the pantry at 5 o'clock anymore in a frantic search for dinner ideas.

I ran across this book at my mother-in-law's house while on vacation. The best part about the book is that it removes the day-to-day drab of cooking for a busy household. No extra fancy recipes or ingredients that require special ordering or a high-price spice or specialty store. A good cost-cutting, fat-cutting general all-around cook book. Highly recommended.
A great book for lowfat, easy and quick recipes.

When I first bought this book (a friend suggested it) I stuckit up on the shelf with the other cookbooks. But when I was invited toa dinner party by the same friend and he proceeded to serve the most incredible, healthy food (and this was a TV dinner kind of guy) I had to ask where he was taking cooking lessons. He told me that every dish he had prepared that evening was right out of 'The Cookbook of the Year' and the best part is that it only took him about 45 minutes to prepare and cook! I opened that book the minute I got home and I found complete shopping lists and daily menus. I went out and bought a weeks worth of groceries and began thrilling my roomate and family with these great meals! I can't say enought about this book. Buy it! You will use it. The food tastes great and it's healthy and easy! People actually think I 'cook' now. Wow!
