Vegetarian Classics Sets the Standard

I own tens of vegetarian cookbooks, but the one that I depend on is Jeanne Lemlin's Vegetarian Classics. There isn't a bad recipe in the book! You can open the book to any page and find a recipe that is bound to make your "favorites" list. In the back of the book, Lemlin has conveniently made a menu guide, so that whether you're cooking for company or cooking casually, you'll know the perfect set of dishes to pair together. Many recipes include a "tip" section, that either allows you to substitute ingredients in the recipe and customize the flavors to your tastes, or gives you advice to make the recipe a no-brainer. I also love the stories that accompany the recipes. I can't commend Lemlin enough for her thoughtful cookbook! (The only negative comments I have are that there are no pictures in this book and some of the recipes are higher in fat than I'd like to consume.) I can't wait for her next cookbook!

I am an avid fan of Jeanne Lemlin's and own all of her cookbooks. I learned to cook from her first book which is falling apart from so much use. Her latest book, Vegetarian Classics, is one you should own regardless of whether or not you are a vegetarian. It is just wicked good food. I made the Thai noodle salad and it was as good as any from my Oriental cookbooks, with no hard-to-find ingredients. Jeanne makes certain her clear and easy recipes work, letting her family and friends be her judges. Hurry and order this book so you won't eat another meal of bland, boring food.

Best vegetarian cookbook EVER!!!!!!

I cannot say enough good things about this cookbook. I think it would be safe to say that I have close to 30 vegetarian cookbooks, and this is the only one I've been satisfied with. I've made close to 20 recipes out of this cookbook so far, and EVERY single one has been a hit---not only with me but with my non-vegetarian husband. It is SO hard to find a vegetarian cookbook that actually has tasty recipes made from ingredients that are easily accessible, and this book offers just that.
The best thing about this book is that I am now willing to make recipes out of it that wouldn't otherwise sound appealing to me, since I have no doubt that they will be delicious nonetheless. I would not hesitate to try a new recipe from this cookbook while serving guests, either, which I can't say about any of my other books.
My only complaint, if I had to make one, would be that there aren't any recipes that use seitan, which is one of my favorite vegetarian staples. I don't know if any of Lemlin's other cookbooks (which I now plan to purchase) make up for that, but it's only a minor complaint, since all the recipes are so good anyway.
In sum, if you are a vegetarian, or even if you aren't, buy this cookbook NOW! I'm so glad that I happened upon it---it has really energized my cooking.

A Really Great Vegetarian Cookbook

'Vegetarian Classics' was my first cookbook by Jeanne Lemlin, author of 'Quick Vegetarian Pleasures.' This is one of the best vegetarian cookbooks I've bought. I use 'Vegetarian Classics' along side my 'Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook.' There's 300 great recipes for every course and meal. I find this differs from other cookbooks which has interesting introduction and history of vegeterian origins. Did you know that St. Franics of Assisi, Leonardo da Vinci, Percy B. Shelley and George Bernard Shaw were all vegetarians? There's an alphabetical list of food ingredients used in the recipes from barley to wheat berries. It explains what each food is and it's use.

The book is easy to follow as every food is put in it's own category starting with the basics and appetizers to everything from soups, salads, breads, side dishes, all types of pies, pastas, stovetop cooking and desserts. In the back there is a handy menu layout to give you ideas for casual, elegant, summer and holiday meals. In each section Lemlin has side notes and colored blocks of additional information and tips like for perfect brown rice, about olives with an excellent recipe for marinated olives, frittatas, cooking beans, choosing & preparing potatoes, successful puff pastry tarts, cookies and polenta are just a few of the items you'll find in the book. Most of the recipes are simple and easy to follow instructions. I love the guide to light breads, flaky scones and tender muffins. The masala chai is heavenly and the mixed berry smoothie yummy. Even if you're a semi-vegetarian or not, and just looking for new ways to cook your veggies this book is excellent!

I have all of her cookbooks. I like them because they taste good and are simple. These are taste that grown-ups enjoy. As well as children. With all of her cookbooks I think she has made and worked on all of the receipes. Some cookbooks I know they couldn't made the receipes just from the taste. This book is the one I gave for Holiday Gifts and Weddings. The soups are wonderful in this book. I have made them all and everyone loves them. If I had to grab one cookbook and the house was on fire this is it.

A great title and great unofficial advertising on Emeril Live. But it could have been much more diverse. I relize that was not the point of the book. But there had to be some recipes that people comonly made but were not creole. I guess I would have liked one or two exotic recipes.

Although I wasn't raised in Lousiana, I love the food, and I love this book. The home recipes and the family memoirs are too good to put down, in the kitchen or the easy chair. If you only buy one cajun cookbook, buy this one.

My mamma's a Crochet, I am Catholic and my husband and I can each make a roux. I, also, am Cajun, know Marcelle and can attest to the authenticity of the recipes and accompanying stories. Many try to capitalize on the Cajun food craze, but few are the real deal. The only thing better than the recipes in Marcelle's book is enjoying them with she and her husband over dinner from their kitchen.

This book is a compendium of recipes that the author has collected over the years but it is also a book that helps you understand the area around New Orleans. It is a fun read and the recipes are marvelous! I have never met the author of this book but would love to meet some day, preferably over a good pot of gumbo for a lively discussion of the region's most famous past time - good eating!

I received the book as a wedding gift two years ago and there are very few recipes I haven't tried. It's not your "meat and potatoes" book, but a collection of family recipes made with gourmet flair. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook and entertain.

I give this cookbook only four stars, for all the wrong reasons. I am a member of the JLW, and I would feel wrong giving the highest possible rating to something I helped produce. It really is five star material for the person who likes to cook and entertain, and the person who likes to send a cookbook to share great recipes with freinds who are also kitchen monkeys. I can say this because I have enjoyed the wit and wisdom as much as the menus and recipes. I was terribly impressed with the books contents when I visited an out-of-town relative (who's a very serious cook, and let's just say, "particular") to whom I sent the book, when she cordially presented one of the full menus at a dinner party. Great find, great gift. All I can add are some of my personal favorites: Hummus: excellent (and easy as pie!) Wild Mushroom Bisque Too many wonderful salads, but my fav is Pasta Pecan Salad ... it is a book that should not be judged by its cover! Both Peasant Bread and Liberty Loaves ... and all those muffins! Pork Tenderloin with Mustard Tarragon Sauce Lasagna Florentine Zucchini au Gratin Cappuccino Brownies: unbelievable!

I love the simple, creative cuisine offered in this book!

Every December I prepare a luncheon for my husband's staff at the University of Florida, in Gainesville. I had already planned my menu, but when I received this book from my twin sister in Overland Park, Kansas for our Birthday I changed my whole menu and chose everything from this cookbook. The recipes are simple yet very elegant in their presentation. I know his office staff will really enjoy all that I've chosen to make. I especially loved the quotes at the bottom of the page as well as the beautifully decorated book cover. Anyone who loves to cook will love this book!

This is a great cookbook for many reasons:

1) I considered myself more of a virtual cook, than an actual cook. Once I purchased Women of Great Taste, that changed. I actually cook recipes now rather than just talking about how good the recipe might be.

2) I always get rave reviews when I serve recipes from this book.

3) This is a beautiful book with terrific recipes. I have recommended it to many friends and family members.

4) Proceeds from Junior League books support community projects.

5) I use it more than any other cookbook I own, and I own dozens of cookbooks.

You cannot buy this book anywhere cheaper than from Amazon.

This book, even though geared for Y2K type expected disaster, still has many useful tips for emergency preparedness. I found the food prep and storage section particularly useful. Also it had an excellent section on waste disposal which is often overlooked in other emergency preparedness books. Small and portable enough to take with you.

A Treasure of a Book

In addition to the recipes and food tips that could keep a diverse group of survivors happy for years (who wants plain ol' Chili gets that, and who prefers dishes like Rice Noodle Pad Thai will be satisfied also), there is an excellent overview of food storage techniques that includes charts I've never before seen on the shelf life of edibles, from an individually wrapped apple to nuts in airtight packages.

While Dorothy and Albert have given us lists, lists, and more lists to follow and yet others to create lists of our own, throughout their little treasure of a book is a taste of the loving, compassionate sensibility without which any attempt to survive is bound to be futile.

Cooking Up The Next Millennium

Review Date: 1999-12-09
The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook (Ecovillage, TN) by Dorothy R. and Albert K. Bates is not your usual recipe collection. With the savvy of environmentalists ad the frenzy of those expecting emergency, Dorothy and Albert Bates cover every area of survival and food preparation. Expecting the worst case scenario - rolling brownouts and total black outs, failed utility systems and water purification problems - this book provides natural alternatives: food storage, chlorine bleach to purify water, using wood stoves, building your own composting toilet, and gardening. There are even first aid and Morse code directions in the final pages. After coping with any Y2K calamities, it's time to cook. In between survival guidelines, the Bates' book is filled with hearty recipes reminiscent of campfire food. As computers buzz blank, you can enjoy split pea soup from melted icicles, marmalades from sun-dried fruit, or shiitake joes from home-grown mushrooms. Even though The Y2K Survival Guide and Cookbook is intended for the millennium-minded cook, it is an eccentric volume any eco-conscious chef should add to their library.

We live, full-time, on our fifty foot motor yacht, and though it may sound large to some folks, space is a consideration. Our galley is large and does have a full size side by side frig. and a full size Jenn-Air. Despite the large galley, there is a need for using as few pots as possible and not requiring lots of ingredients. We have tried quite a few of the recipes and with an exception or two, all have been great! We recently had a chili shoot-out at our marina and MICHAEL'S PORK AND BLACK BEAN CHILI was the winner by a mile. I had several requests for the recipe and our friends were quite disappointed to find the book out of print. Too bad. Liz and Al Nalven, Longboat Key, FL

I would be honoured to have these two fine cooks and writers at my table, although I would be humbled by their presence as what they have brought together in their cook book is tantamount to magic. They have in effect brought the art of "simple" close to gastronomic and sometimes surpassed in gastronomic. We have owned this book since 1991, 1 year after the original publication and it is getting threadbare, forgetting the wonderfull combinations of flavours, anyone with a love of boating, especially sailing, will wistfully romance the pictures and sceniks as you meander through its pages. Hats off to two great people of this earth who have made mine and many others life more pleasant and worth living.

We've had this book for a couple of years now and are delighted with the simplicity and quality of the recipes. Initially purchased as a gift for sailor friends but their success with the recipes was so great that we purchased one for ourselves. Our friends even won a contest with one of the eggplant recipes. This book NEEDS to be reprinted. We are so sorry we can not offer it as a gift for more of our friends and are very dissapointed about that.

Hopefully the publisher will reconsider.

Wow, this book is completly fantastic! I cannot wait to say that my son and i have completed every delicious recipe.I have never been able to master the measuring conversions for the ingredients so this book was an exciting find! Not only does it have my favs from home (UK) like yorkshire puddings and REAL scones but also many other dishes from around the world that we look forward to testing. The book has a great layout, with safety tips that are illustrated in a kid friendly way. I'm not exactly the connoisseur in the kitchen but I feel like this book is a great tool for me to teach my son cooking, which is a gift that i never had growing up.

This sturdy cookbook is a geography-and-cooking compendium that most kid cooks will find challenging, to say the least. After an introductory Basics: Getting Started chapter in which kids learn how to perform cooking steps, understand specialized words, respect sharp tools and power tools, and perform clean up, the text is divided into six geographic sections with recipes: Asia (Salmon teriyaki, Miso soup, Bok choy stir fry, Vegetable fried rice, Shrimp pad Thai, Vietnamese lettuce rolls) ; India-Indonesia-Australasia (Lemony lamb skewers, ANZAC biscuits, Pavlova, Tandoori chicken legs, Cauliflower and pea curry); Middle East-Africa-Mediterranean (Flourless chocolate cakes, Tabbouleh, Greek pork kebabs, Marinara sauce, Caprese salad, Vanilla panna cotta, Leb Lebi, Bobotie, Gazpacho, Ratatouille, Croque monsieur); Russia-Northern Europe (Apple nut Brussels sprouts, Warm German potato salad, Pfeffernusse, Instant Swiss hot chocolate, Chicken paprikash, Roasted beets, Swedish meatballs, Mashed potatoes, Shepherd's pie, Yorkshire pudding, Scones) ; South America-Mexico-Caribbean (Burgers with chimichurri, Roasted sweet potato fries, Fresh tomato salsa, Classic cheese quesadillas, Jicama slaw, Mexican chocolate pudding, Jamaican jerk chicken, Tostones, Cuban black bean soup) ; United States and Canada (Jambalaya, Southern-style cornbread, Apple oatmeal crumble, Crispy parmesan baked cod, Summer succotash, Canadian butter tarts). Three additional sections include: Pocket Food Around the World; Cheese Around the World; Flatbreads Around the World. An index and acknowledgements wrap things up. Most recipes are a handsome double-page spread with a photo of the finished food; every recipe lists ingredients, equipment, directions (including a cautionary symbol for "hot" or "electric" or "sharp"); some recipes include variations and others include tips on cooking. This is a stunningly visual cookbook, and the introductory geography pages are concise but chock full of information. While there are other similar titles (Kids' Cookbook: Recipes from Around the World by Rosalba Gioffre, Frances Lee and Karen Ward; The Kids Multicultural Cookbook by Deanna Cook, for example) this one is most comparable to Emeril's There's A Chef in my World: Recipes That Take You Places with good old Mr. Bam on every page. The only criticism that could be lowered at this lovely volume is that shopping might be a challenge; even after half a century of shopping, I'd be mystified where to find some of the ingredients for some of these recipes, quite frankly. This cookbook would well serve elementary through high school, but special needs kids will find the print lists of ingredients challenging because of small print. Interior spiral wire-binding with hardcovers and heavy duty pages will stand up to lots of use. Abigail Johnson Dodge is a contributing editor at Fine Cooking Magazine and the author of five cookbooks including The Kid's Cookbook, Kids Baking and Weekend Baker. She makes frequent TV and radio appearances and teaches at cooking schools around the country.

My family has been a BIG fan of Abigail Dodge's Childrens' cookbooks and we were not dissapointed with her new book. My 7 year old and I have been working through the book and we have enjoyed every recipe and my husband has REALLY enjoyed the fruits of our labor. The recipes are very easy, but are very tasty. My 7 year old definitely needs my help, but for an older child it would be smooth sailing. What I like about the recipes is that altho they are Kid Friendly, you certainly would not be shy to serve these recipes to adults. Some of our favorite recipes are the Tandori Chicken Legs, The Shrimp Pad Thai, and the TO-Die-For Flourless Chocolate Cake.
Also, besides the great recipes, it has been fun for my daughter to read about the different countries that the recipes are based on. All in all it is a fun, beautifully illustrated, and yummy cookbook. I would reccomend it to any aspiring young chef!!!! or an old seasoned cook like me!!!!!

Some receipes do offer more challenges, a great starter to learn terms and techniques. Easy and fun to read and cook. Inspires culinary and cultural exploration. A great book to share in the kitchen.

I love this cookbook, but this revision is missing a few things I liked from the older ones. One is the cheese pages, one thing I love about the red plaid book is that is shows indiviual photographs of different types of pastas, herbs, beans and rice etc. But this version does not have the cheese. There were also a few other things missing I liked from my older book like seasoning guide, and also special techniques. Maybe some of these things are there and I just have not found them yet. Of course there are great additions to the book besides the old recipes section. I like the info on new foods and ethnic foods.

The Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book is hardly new in my family. At least not the copy I recently found! My mother has a great nack for saving just about everything. When I partially removed the old red fabric tape holding the cover together, I found the words "Meredith Press O1." The red and white gingham cover also has three pictures: a pot, a pan and a gravy server.

I know for a fact, my mother has had this cookbook since I was born. My grandmother also has about every edition ever published, all well worn! I am finally convinced that "The Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book" is perhaps almost completely responsible for my families love of cooking.

Our beloved cookbook is so well worn, the edges of all the pages are a lovely crinkled beige. The yellow tabbed pages have clear tape over the well-worn tabs and the poultry chapter has barely survived. (We raised chickens in Africa! This book was there!)

I was more than pleased to hear about the 1930-2000 Limited Edition! We still make the Herb Stuffing and Ambrosia. I also just realized that my father must have found the idea for cheese-filled bacon wrapped frankfurters from Better Homes and Gardens. Dad! And I thought he made that recipe up! It looks like men were reading cookbooks in the 60's or maybe that dish was a popular one.

Do you remember Praline or Seven-Minute Frosting? The Swedish Pancakes and Banana-nut Bread recipes are all splattered with stains of unknown origin. (I am guessing eggs, milk, butter?) All my new cookbooks are now on a stand, far out of reach of buttery fingers! But then again, if my mother had not let me use this cookbook at a young age (without much supervision - therefore the stains of unknown origin), who knows if I would have developed such a fascination for kitchen lore, cooking and culinary culture. Many of my family memories are also connected to recipes in many editions of this book.

If you are looking for a cookbook to inspire generations of cooks, you should consider this book seriously. Not only is it an American classic, the recipes carry with them the happy culinary memories of millions of Americans.

My mother, after 40 years of marriage, still has the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook she received as a newlywed. I grew up on a lot of recipes out of this book and I finally got one for myself. It has a lot of great basic and simple recipes as well as a classic favorites section.

I recieved the book quickly and in good shape. I have already used several recipes from the book and so far every one has been tasty, tasty.
Try the Ultimate Pancake recipe. They are the lightest, most "melt in your mouth" pancakes I have ever eaten. There is a section on tips for using Bisquick that I found very useful also.

I loved the book, as I have baked with Bisquick for years. It also is a very big plus for my cookbook collection. I have the original Bisquick Cookbook and this one is a plus.

I ordered this book sight unseen, largely from the reviews and the fact that I loved the cover. It is the perfect kitchen-garden cookbook...full of delicious recipes you'll actually use from ingredients you likely have on hand or nearby. I would recommend it to anyone who loves to cook...especially those with an interest in garden to table cooking.

Elegance and simplicity.

What a beautiful book. This author is the real deal. I have been a fan of her innovations for years. Jeanne's recipes are creative, delicious and user friendly. And seriously, if you want to increase your popularity, use the chocolate cake recipe and make cupcakes. Bring these to a social event. You will have instant best friends! (And maybe a new lover, or two.)

This book has it all - a beautiful cover, a gorgeous inside and, most important, recipes that are absolutely delicious and go hand-in-hand with your garden. Suggestions for what to have on hand in the kitchen will get you started on the right track, and composting advice will keep your garden and your planet healthy for years to come. "Blue Eggs and Yellow Tomatoes" makes a wonderful and unique wedding gift - perhaps along with an herb or two for fun! Enjoy.

This is a book of great recipes, tips and beautiful photographs. Whenever I look at the recipes, I can't wait to make them.
Her flavors are fresh, clean and global. I, also, appreciate that the ingredients are accessible...no searching of specialty markets for a teaspoon of an expensive ingredient. Likewise, the recipes are accurate and well thought out. If you follow her recipe, you will have a great meal.
Thank you Jeanne Kelley.

I just purchased this book and I'm in love......it is a beautiful book with emphasis on simplicty, flavor, and sophisication. I love the idea of home grown foods....the full-page photography and artistic text are fabulous...we just made the chocolate chip cookies and it was fabulously delicious. I have collected many chocolate chip cookie recipes and this is the best one....although I must confess that I used good bittersweet chopped chocolate instead of the milk chocolate chips. Another great aspect of this book is that it utilizes exotic flavors and incorporates world cuisines, such as Cuban, Morocco, Greece, Middle Eastern, Mexican...the results are delicious, elegant, and contemporary. For any serious cook, this is a treasure.
