THis story is classic. I use this book so much that I have to retire my old copy and replace it with a new one every couple of years. It is a fabulous vehicle for storywriting in the primary classroom.

I have been reading Pat Hutchins books to children for many years. They are wonderful!! Rosie's Walk is a great book for sound effects! As Rosie goes obliviously on her walk, the fox encounters all sorts of sound effect producing trials. Great fun!

We have the board book edition, and I have to admit, I didn't think my 2-year old was going to like it when I first flipped through it. There didn't seem to be much to it --- no eye-catching illustrations and not much text. Shows how much I know... My daughter loves it. The story is less about Rosie the hen and more about the fox --- what happens to it from page to page. It is truly a sequential story and shows cause-and-effect: on one page you see the fox leaping towards Rosie, who is walking past the pond. On the next page, you see the fox in the pond. Your toddler will make the connection on her own: "Uh-oh. Fox fall in water."

Who says whole grains have to taste like health food? Rebecca Wood lays out everything you need to know about the common grains (oat, wheat, barley, rice), the not-so-common (quinoa, millet, amaranth, buckwheat) and the downright rarely eaten in this country (tef, Job's tears). For each one she explains how/where it is grown, how to buy and store it, what it is used for, its nutritional advantages, etc. She gives basic recipes for cooking the grains plain or nearly so, as well as more complicated recipes and suggestions for what to pair with what. The chapters are divided first by the continent to which each grain is native and then by the grains themselves, and then for each grain there are recipes for plain grains, soups, main dishes, side dishes and desserts. I like this organization, although if you want to make a whole grain dessert, for instance, you'll have to look through the chapters on the various grains or in the index, as there is no organization by type of dish, e.g., soups, desserts, etc. The intros to each dish give you a good idea of what to expect, the instructions are pretty clear, and the results are spectacular. The Winter Squash and Quinoa Pottage is amazingly great (especially if you make it with homemade stock -- it is particularly awesome using the vegetable stock recipe from The New Basics Cookbook, but was also good with Swanson low-sodium chicken broth), is ridiculously easy, and extremely high in protein and vitamins. Just wash the quinoa really well first. Takes less than 1/2 hour plus the time to wash the quinoa and cut the onion and squash. The pinon (pine nut) crackers with amaranth are all whole grain, super easy and the only problem with it is that it's hard not to eat the entire batch myself as soon as it's done. Recipes include a good mix of vegetarian items and ones with meat so it's a good book no matter how you eat. My only quibble is that measurements for baked goods are given solely by volume, rather than by weight, which is more accurate, but it's a small one. This is my new favorite cookbook.
Awesome resource!!

I initially checked this book out at the library and just had to have my own copy. The author has done years of research and provides very detailed and interesting information about various grains to include their origins, historical uses and various methods of preparation. There is also a section detailing little-known places where you can order seeds to grow your own or purchase ready to use grains/grain products. This book should be in every home cookbook collection!
These recipes are consistently excellent, and wholesome too.

I knew nothing about this book when I checked it out of the library, except that it had recipes for some of the more unusual grains. It is only now that I looked it up on Amazon that I discovered that it won the James Beard award. I am not the least bit surprised, however, because all the recipes I have tried have been consistently delicious, wholesome, and creative. You will find very few run-of-the-mill recipes in this cookbook.
I check many cookbooks out of the library, but for many I can't find any recipes that I want to make, or if I do find recipes to try, once I make them I am generally not impressed. So I was amazed when I opened this cookbook to find so many intriguing recipes, each of which turned out better than the last.
Some highlights: The grilled millet and butternut squash cakes had so few spices I was sure they would be bland, but they weren't. They were subtle but sweet and crunchy and addictive. The millet, quinoa, and burdock pilaf again looked underseasoned, but the burdock adds a great earthy depth to the pilaf, and again, I could not stop eating this dish. Wood's recipe for Locro, a South American soup, has a large number of ingredients, but it is well worth the effort. The barley and beans that make up the bulk of this soup make it substantial and extremely filling. The celeriac is sweet and delicious, the anise seeds add a subtle mysterious note, and the roasted New Mexican chili and the kombu create a great tasty broth with more depth than a typical vegetarian soup.
The only recipe that I was disappointed in was her basic recipe for "steamed" amaranth. Wood swears it's the best way to cook amaranth, but I thought it turned out exactly the same as it always does when I cook it--gooey, but tasty. Also, as a previous reviewer noted, Wood doesn't use too many green vegetables in this cookbook, but since it is a grains cookbook I can forgive this one shortcoming.
Overall, this book is full of healthy, nutritious, creative, well-tested recipes that please the palate and the body, and are reasonably quick to prepare. The flavorings are generally subtle, but perfectly balanced, allowing the taste of the ingredients to shine through. If you like very strong tasting food, however, you might find the recipes a bit bland. The recipes are not all vegetarian, but there are enough vegetarian recipes that I just returned my library book and ordered this book on Amazon.

It's a history book and a cookbook all in one. The biggest selling point for me is the accuracy of the recipes. Can you believe it contains a mincemeat recipe that actually contains meat! That's a rare gem these days. If you love food history as much as you do a good dish you will want to own this book.

The history behind the national holiday is also explained with interesting details and complements nicely the culinary section. Whether the reader wants to learn more about the tradition or wants to impress friends and family at the dinner table, this is the book to read!

This is a fun book. The book has great trivia and history, and a great variety of the old traditional recipes. But along with that, are the recipes created by the different cultures of our "Melting Pot", who adapted their own wonderful tastes and flavors to their Thanksgiving celebration. This year, my family is going use only recipes in this cookbook to make a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.

Here's a young adult novel that holds up beautifully some 40 years later. If its period references place it in a particular time, its message is as fresh as ever. And if you ever had a song, or book, or film, or painting change your life, open up wider vistas to you, then this story will resonate all the more. Sometimes that single, soul-wrenching encounter with art can change your whole life & set it going in a new direction.
I love that Dave's version of "Suzanne" is the Noel Harrison one, and later the Judy Collins one, because that's how a teenager in the Midwest would have been likely to hear it. No artistic snobbery here, no "cooler than thou" attitudes -- the emphasis is on honesty, both with others & one's own self. Dave & Kate come across as very real, struggling with the need to be individuals, to be more than what they're supposed to be, to change & to grow. Each gains precious insights into themselves & the world around them. And you'll never look at a chicken the same way again, either!
My paperback copy became so worn out that I finally tracked down a hardcover copy for my shelves. It remains very re-readable, even if you're now as old (or even older) than Dave's parents. A thoughtful, perceptive little gem, most highly recommended.

This book was my "Catcher in the Rye" because I was a huge Leonard Cohen fan and Suzanne was my mantra.
This book meant more to me than almost any thing I had read.
I had my kids read it when they were in 6 or 7th grade and they felt the same way.
The book still gives me chills.
What's happening with Mr. McKay these days?

I first read this book 35 years ago, when I was in 7th grade. It swept me into a world of characters with feelings like my own, something I'd seldom known. I immediately rushed out and bought a copy of Judy Collins singing "Suzanne," and wore out the record. I wore out the book, too - had to buy another copy.
Now, many years later, I still return to this beautiful book time and again, and recommend it to young friends.

This was one of the first novels I read back in 7th grade. (I had to sneak to the library to get it, I wasn't allowed to read novels) It touched me in so many ways. Most profoundly by the sense that others had the same or similar feelings and hopes, dreams, and fears that I did. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to remember the intensity of our younger selves or to share with your own children.

When I first read this book I was baffled by why I loved it so much. The story line seems basic and the plot is conventional, but the characters--they are incredible. The author creates a hero and heroine that draw you to the book time and again. I can't help but read it at least once a month, just to remind myself why I like chickens. Andrea Rasmussen

This is a great book, growing up on a poultry farm I can agree with the author - it's not easy!
Hens can be difficult, getting the feltch balance is so hard, just how much do you give them? And should it be straw fed?
Managing cocks is just plain difficult! Cocls tend to get trapped in small places and rarely do what you want. If I had 10c for every time I have trapped a cock in the door I wouldn't need pocket money!!
Overall though a good book.
Hens can be difficult, getting the feltch balance is so hard, just how much do you give them? And should it be straw fed?

My four Rhode Island Reds are my first ever to care for and this book helped me to quickly know what to do without having to take a college course. It is helpful in building of and requirements of a coop, requirements for the growing chick into adulthood (food, lighting, temperature, water, protection and cleanliness.)I highly recommend this book and also bought one for a christmas present for an owner of a small flock.Plus there is much more information like, illness& diseases, butchering, ducks, turkeys, and incubation.
Best book for the beginner on the market.

I own a small hatchery and poultry farm. We sell hundreds of baby chicks every month. When someone with little or no poultry experience asks for some good reference material for their new chicks, I point them to this book. Will Graves covers every aspect of raising poultry in great detail, but does not bore his reader. This book is also a great reference item for the current poultry owner. If I have a question, I turn to Mr. Graves first. I highly recommend this book.

This is a GREAT cookbook. I own quite a few, and most are only useful for a few recipes, or only for one type of food, etc. But the most negative thing I can say about any of the recipes I've tried from this book has been that it was okay (and that was only one recipe!). Among my favorites are the black bean and peppers with chicken and rice, the pesto, pasta and grapes chicken salad (sounds a little strange, but is EXCELLENT), chili chicken and rice, and the black bean and chicken soup. This cookbook has inspired me to try some more ethnic cooking without being worried I'll completely mess it up! The recipes are mostly low to moderate fat, and often encourage the use of various beans, whole grains, etc. I've frequently substituted brown rice for other rices, whole wheat pasta for regular pasta, etc. with really delicious results.
The only thing I will say is that the 15 minute part for a lot of the recipes I like most is pretty optimistic... but there are some that are genuinely 15 minute recipes (the chicken and corn skillet is a fast and tasty meal).
Definitely try this cookbook - the recipes are fun, encourage you to experiment a bit, and are really good. It would make a great gift for someone who has mastered the true basics of cooking (how to pick out produce, boil water, grill plain chicken, etc.) and is looking for a versatile but fast set of recipes to enjoy.

I have very much enjoyed using this cookbook! every single recipe I have tried is very good, and some are far superior to meals I have tasted in fine restaurants. the format is easy to use, the recipes are easy to follow. there are many tips that are extremely helpful. the book also lists calories and fat per meal, which is useful.
I will report that there are a few meals that take more than fifteen minutes to prepare, however the recipes are very fun to make. I wish there were more pictures, although those in there are very accurate to the actual results.

My uncle, a culinary arts instructor, gave me this book when I first moved out on my own after college and commented to him that I didn't know how to cook. This book is full of great easy recipes. Some take more than 15 minutes (they start the clock once all the veggies are chopped, chicken cut into thin strips to cook faster, or some start with cooked rice), but all are relatively easy and tasty. Some of my favorite recipes are the black bean chicken soup, the curry one with fruit (I think I made it with apricots), the chicken corn skillet, and the stir fry one with the sesame oil and snow peas. I apologize - I don't have the book in front of me so I'm not getting the names exactly right. These recipes are good, easy, and many are reasonably healthy (or can be adapted, as someone said, to be more healthy). This book is far better than the celebrity Food Network 30-minute meal books. Also, this is a nice "gourmet: cookbook in that it occasionally requires an unusual ingredient, but most recipes don't require a trip to the store to search for really unusual and pricey ingredients. Many recipes involve things that a lot of people might have on hand. Also, some of the recipes offer a substitution suggestions (e.g. other vegetables that work well with the same sauces), which also makes shopping for them or cooking with what you have on hand easy.

We have enjoyed Esther's imaginative and delicious cuisine for many years. Each of her meals is a journey of delight: a prolonged, languid excursion through a series of courses, each fresh and original and of modest proportion. "Birds of a Different Feather" reveals how these repasts are built. The "meat" courses are primarily poultry, though fish and seafood, also take a bow; appetizers, soups, salads, grains, deserts all are presented, so you can mix and match for a multi-course meal. The dishes are invariably inventive, but neither strange nor difficult. Besides revealing the secrets of Esther's cooking, her book is a visual banquet as well, illustrated with fanciful watercolors by Jane Angelhart and printed on paper sturdy enough to withstand splashes of clarified butter, celery root soup, ginger and honey sauce, kumquats, tomatillos, pistachio filling, and grand marnier apricot sabayon. You will love this book, and the pleasure it helps you provide to the people at your table.

For those of us who love to eat well, but struggle in the kitchen, this book is a godsend. Many cookbooks assume too much or the recipes are misleading or both. Here is a master chef who cares about your result. She provides advice and encouragement within a beautifully illustrated book. In the aknowledgements Gerhard says, "cooking is my way of expressing affection, of drawing people closer and seeing them happy." Her book makes this wonderful sentiment available to us all.

The first thing that struck me about this book was the beautiful edition - the illustrations really set the tone for the eclectic recipes they accompany. The recipes themselves obviously draw on a wide and varied background in cooking (and travel?)- bringing together ingredients and techniques from various European, Asian and American styles of cooking. I loved the Goat Cheese Napoleons, the Cucumber Wheels with Crabmeat and Sushi Rice, and scored major brownie points with my husband with the Cardamom Pears. Although this is not a beginners cookbook, the instructions are very clear and precise and I would encourage anyone with a sense of adventure as far as good food is concerned to dive into these recipes.

This is an OUTSTANDING book! I purchased it at school through a discount book service and I have made many of the recipes and have never been disappointed. The Spicy Rice with Chicken and Vegetables is one of my favorites. I use boneless breast meat instead of thighs and hot salsa instead of medium, so the fat is reduced and the heat is increased. With chicken as its staple, the book presents recipes in a wide variety of cooking genre: Asian, Cajun, Tex/Mex, Italian, French, Southern and even Hawaiian recipes are included. Whenever I'm looking for something new to serve, this book is one of the first cookbooks that I peruse, and I have over 500 cookbooks in my collection. The great thing is that you can serve these dishes to your family and friends with the knowledge that the food is lower in fat without sacrificing any flavor. Many people equate low fat with low flavor and Chicken Light debunks that with a treasure trove of delicious recipes. Here is hoping that Time/Life Books puts this wonderful collection into print once again. If you can get your hands on this book, DO IT!!

The photography is brilliant. This is real food, not "foo, foo" cooking. If you cook chicken a lot, you MUST have this book.

The recipes take a boring meat (chicken) and make it scrumptious. We haven't found a recipe we don't like yet! Some of the recipes take a long time (chicken dumplings) but others are quick for weeknights. The book is well-organized with one-dish meals, dinner tonight (for faster recipes), on the grill, and recipes to serve company. The nutrition information is always included and the meals (if you stick with the portion size suggested) are "heart healthy" as most of them don't use chicken skin.

This book has a fabulous variety of ways to use chicken and (just as important to me) a whole chapter of side dishes to complement them. The chapter on soups goes way beyond the standard matzah ball soup. I've definitely added a few new spices to my shelves because of this book, but a lot of the recipes work well with more standard substitutions. Every meal I've cooked using this book has received lots of ooh's and aah's.
You've gotta have this book if you love chicken.

This cookbook is great! The recipes in here are a nice change from same, repeated Hungarian-style recipes found in every other kosher cookbook. Although the long lists of ingredients and instructions might seem daunting to some, the recipes are not difficult, and so far, every recipe I've tried from the book has come out well.
