The official NPS maps and guide-books are very lame, mostly because of the fear that ancient ruins and art could be vandalized. This book is therefore indispensable to a truly fulfilling visit to Canyonlands. The maps and directions are perfect--just enough detail to be clear and to keep you from getting lost, but they don't deprive you of feeling like you're actually doing some exploring and route-finding.

This is really the only good guide book I have found on Canyonlands National Park. It describes in great detail many trails that arn't even mentioned in the Falcon Guide. It also has a great color section, and its maps are much better than the other books. For some reason the Nat. Park Visitor Centers don't sell this book (maybe it has too much info about things they want to keep secret?), so you better get it before you start your trip!

This book is fantastic!

Canyonlands is a wild and wonderful place to explore. I would have been lost without this book. I was able to decide ahead of time what areas of the park I wanted to spend the most time in by reading the detailed descriptions of jeep roads and trails. The beautiful color photographs helped me make decisions as well. I found the maps to be extremely helpful and the estimated travel times to be very accurate. David Day knows his stuff!

This is a Great book for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. By including a focus on the jeep roads of the Canyonlands area David Day has provided the hiker with information necessary for access to its fantastic hiking trails. The format is similar to his other hiking books. The maps and trail descriptions and commentary are not only helpful but very interesting. The photography is great. I particularly enjoyed the section of color photos I like his trail overview which includes a rating of his enjoyment of the trail.

I've made a couple of the hikes he writes up and with the help of his book I will be doing more.

With many of the hiking guides lining my bookself, this one stands out with its unique, user-friendly format. All of the most important information regarding selection of a trail are on easy-to-reference columns of stand-out font along each side of the pages. The supporting narratives fill the remainder of the pages with plenty of detail to give you a clear understanding of exactly what you can expect to encounter, plus ensure that you fully enjoy and appreciate each hike. Despite the title, this book is for all hikers and I would especially recommend it for families with young children. I certainly hope that these authors are considering more publications to cover other areas throughout the Northwest.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book on 'little' outings in Central Oregon. It is a thoughtful approach to walks and hikes in that area with those folks in mind who are not able to do the rigorous hikes that most hiking books focus on. The authors remind us that we need to enjoy the things that we can do rather than bemoan the things that we cannot do. The book is well written and accurate. Having taken several of the hikes myself, I can say that with confidence. The book needs to be taken along on the walk as a good 'tour guide'. I enjoyed the enthusiasm and the humor of the authors. It is a great resource for those with small children, older parents or handicapped friends or family.

I am a world traveler and have lived in Argentina, Columbia, and Israel. It is my understanding that Walks, Hikes and Strolls is for "mature folks". I am a young tourist in the United States for the first time as an adult and I appreciate finding a guide book that is easily understandable and points out many important things in a way that looks out for my safety, my body and my sanity. What a pleasure to be in a strange land and have such competent directions and instructions at my finger tips. I hope that many other people from other countries are as lucky as I have been to come accross this book. Good hiking to everyone!

As a lifelong hiker and adventurer, I highly recommend Johnson and Gray's "Walks, Hikes and Strolls". When I am on a hike, I want to be enjoying nature, focusing on the beauty around me and appreciating the inner peace that comes with this experience. "Walks, Hikes and Strolls" better allows me to relax and get what I want out of a hike because of its simplicity, clarity, and its common-sense approach. This book will allow young and old alike to enter nature with a feeling of security and with the knowledge needed to make the most of the experience. The Fact Finder in the left hand column gives valuable information on miles, elevation, permits needed, trail timeframes and where to obtain maps. The Feasibility Gauge in the right hand column consisely tells trail conditions, facilities, type of exposure and types of use that the trail has.
I can't wait to try out the hikes that are listed!

The maps and photos are incredible. A must read for any Chicago-area mountain bike owner. I highly recommend it.

She modeled on beaches all over the world making anyone realize how modern conveniences are taken for granted. This is a perfect all around outdoor book. The tips can be helpful camping tips as well. I kept hoping she would come out with a second book.

I had purchased this book about 15 years ago, but let a friend in college borrow it. She moved away - taking the book with her. Over the years, I have greatly missed it! It's really informative, easy to read, and provides some excellent tips. It's a very motivating book where fitness is concerned. Christie has a great writing style - practical and "down-to-earth." I highly recommend it! I'm glad to once again have the book after 15 years -- I have no idea where the friend who borrowed my original copy is. Marcia - you know who you are -- ha! ha!

This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse. Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse. Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods. Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players. Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse. I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices. A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse.

The Complete Guide to Food for Sports Performance is the best sports nutrition resource I have come across. It covers a great variety of sports and is suitable for the recreational sportsperson to the professional athlete. It covers eveything anyone would want to know about sports nutrition and is set out in an easy-to-read manner. Every sports person or sports professional should have a copy of this book

a very readable and practical update on sports nutrition

Review Date: 1999-09-29
It is hard to keep reading about what "the athlete" should eat. The athlete doesn't exist. But gymnasts and runners and swimmers and basketball players do, and they all have really different needs and interests. This book begins with a section on the principles of sports nutrition - from the science to the general practice. This part is good, and provides an up-to-date view of the latest ideas in eating for peak performance. This shouldn't be too surprising since the author is the head of nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport. The language is easy to read and makes scientific principles comprehensible.

But it is the second half of this book that is unique and special. It takes a focussed look at various sports, providing a personal glimpse of the nutritional needs and the real life eating practices of the athletes involved. Sports really differ in their lifestyle, their competition needs, their traditions and the ways in which their athletes/players eat to be at their best. These chapters discuss the key nutrition issues that arise in a sport, providing specialised strategies to deal with these issues. It reviews applied sports nutrition studies that can answer specific questions in a sport, and provides case histories to illustrate the special nutritional challenges and solutions. Find out how Tour de France riders refuel during their event. Read how gymnasts manage weight control issues, or whether weightlifters need to eat more protein. Read some of the letters written to body building magazines and compare the answers provided in the magazines with the advice of a real sports nutrition expert. Compare the strategies that football players or runners need to use to stay hydrated during their events. This is the first time that I have gained specific insights into the real life world of sports nutrition. I hope this book continues to be updated to provide a great blend of the science and practice of sports nutrition. I would recommend this book to athletes, coaches and parents. But I also think that many sports science and medicine professionals will benefit from the "birdseye" view of sports nutrition.

The complete guide to food for sports performance is an excellent resource for athletes of all levels. Not only does it provide detailed nutritional information during training it also provides very useful tips for competition (pre-, during and post). The second part of the book addresses a wide range of different sports from distance running and rowing to gymnastics and diving. This part is particularly useful as it highlights problems and nutritional deficiencies that are experienced by athletes in this sport, thus helping the reader to pinpoint (or watch out for) certain eating "mistakes" in their favourite sport. Case studies offer very useful examples on how even small changes in the diet can make a big difference. A brilliant book for anyone interested in sports nutrition.

No one does it better than Corbin

I have been using Corbin books in my wellness / fitness practice since the early 80's. In 1981 I moved to Houston, Texas and started to manage the Tenneco fitness center. We saw over 1,000 employees using the facility a day and faced a huge challenge of moving past the 20% of the population that already kept in shape daily.

Corbin books were "real", about real efforts in real environments. I could sit down and read a little of Corbin and not only pick up tips for my coach counseling, but also ideas for group challenges or behavior change efforts.

I have had plenty of mentors along my 30 years of worksite programming and many of them I have become good friends, but Corbin is one I have never met, but highly respect for his work and what he has given the fitness and wellness field.

I have a spot on my book shelf that is "Corbin" books and I bet after you have bought this one and used it, you will go back and start like me a little Corbin library. I can't imagine a wellness practitioner without Corbin on their book shelf.

If you're looking for pictures, or to copy someone elses work, this isn't the book for you. However, if you want really good information and practical guides that work, this is the one. It gives a lot of history and information on the "old" ways. Tips and tricks that were lost with time, and are just as valuable now as they were back then. This little book is about 100 years old, but it is a rare gem that you won't find easily. It's a truly wonderful craftsman's manual on how to make victorian-style concrete pottery---the kind that you would see in a beautiful victorian garden or mansion. Although very old, it's filled with photo demonstrations and diagrams of exactly what to do. It shows beautifully crafted planters with ornate relief work and the craftsman's techniques of making it. The book is a how-to book. I have never seen another book like this. I am surprised that it has not been republished, because there are a lot of people out there who have an interest in making things at home for their own garden, and garden ornaments and potter are becoming more and more popular. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

This book is so easy to use! It's organized very logically and gives a good summary of the state's county parks. I took it out of the library and have used it to find great camping destinations, but there's also information on other specific activities; i.e., fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc. When used in conjunction with the websites which most of the state's counties now have, it makes planning a camping trip a breeze. I plan on buying the revised addition. All in all, an excellent resource for families or individuals who enjoy the outdoors in the Badger state.

This is one of the best book on parks that I have ever seen. I have 11 excellent books on Wisconsin (camping, hiking, state parks, backpacking, and touring), but this is the best book for finding a good county park while traveling or planning a vacation. This book is a hidden treasure: it contains information on 600 wonderful county parks in Wisconsin. This appears to be the only consolidated book on county parks in Wisconsin. The book is incredibly well-organized: 1- They provided a chapter on the 25 best parks. (This is useful if you are specifically planning to go to one of the best parks out of 600 county parks.) 2- The 600 parks are organized by location, which means when you are traveling in a particular county, you can easily find a county park. The book is organized first by location, and then alphabetical. It is a very clever and helpful way to organize a book because you can find a park in the area you want very quickly. This makes vacation planning so easy. (I own State Parks, Wisconsin by Bailey and while a good book, it's not organized like this, which makes planning a vacation more of a challenge because the parks are scattered in the book because they are not organized by location.) This books is an excellent tool for planning a vacation. 3- Each county represents one chapter in which that one county's parks are described. At the top of each chapter on each county, they have a really handy picture where the county of interest is bolded on miniature Wisc map. So, if you are planning a trip up North, but you're not familiar with all of the names of the northern counties, you'll instantly know if this chapter is the right area for you, just by looking at the picture. This makes it really efficient to find what you need. 4- It's the only book (out of the 11 Wisc books that I bought) that also has a chapter that covers best parks for a particular use. It's "Best Parks for Special Uses" chapter tells you where to find the best parks for: a) Nature Study, b) Horseback riding, c) out-of-the-way camping, d) historic sites, e) bird watching, f) folk art, g) waterfalls, h) Native American history, i) Caving, j) cannoeing, k) family camping, l) winter sports. 5- When describing a park, the book provides the following information: a) directions, b) facilities (e.g. none, swimming, beach, picnic tables, outhouses, toilets, hiking, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, playground, boat landing, grills, picnic shelter, tent sites, trailer sites, hiking, nature trails, etc.) It's a very handy book because of the depth of material that is displayed in a very effective way. I highly recommend this book. It's excellent.

This book is especially useful for those that camp. Wisconsin state parks have raised the camping rates and this year even the National Forest sites have to be reserved. This book is a powerful tool for those that make spontanious decisions about how and where to spend week-ends.
