What a wonderful book! The illustrations are breathtakingly georgous and intricately detailed as is typical of all Jan Brett's books. The story of the Gingerbread Baby is a surprising and delightful retelling of the classic story. My children and I loved this book!

When a Gingerbread Boy is peeked at when not supposed to, he becomes Gingerbread Baby! This is the main idea of Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. This story is about a boy named Matti in Switzerland. This is a great children's book. I strongly recommend the book.

A boy named Matti decides it's a perfect day for gingerbread. But, when his mother tells him not to peek, he does anyways. Then out pops ... not the Gingerbread Man but ... The Gingerbread Baby! The Ginger bread Baby runs away and everyone chases him. It's very funny.

I think that the Gingerbread Baby is the best character. He's the best character because he is my favorite character. The main characters are, Matti, The Gingerbread Baby, and the animals. The writing style is great. The story is very easy to read. It's a great book.

I really like the illustrations. They really tell the story. Some of the pictures are funny. The Gingerbread Baby even has his own little saying like the Gingerbread Man. One saying is "Catch me if you can!"

The story was great and funny. I really enjoyed the book. I really hope you like the book too. I recommend the book for grades k-5. This book can be for any age, boy or girl.

I really feel like the odd one out, but I wasn't too impressed with this book. Sure, the illustrations are gorgeous...By no means am I knocking Ms. Brett's skill here, but I just find the text a little long winded and ackward. Maybe it's the way I'm reading it...? It just doesn't seem too terribly well-written to me.

This is more than just a children's book. It is something very special and beautifully illustrated that caters for the child that lurks inside all of us. The simple story touches not just on human faith but issues of the heart that will promise to bring a lump in your throat at the end of it. If you have young children, read it to them. If you don't, find a quiet moment and read it aloud to yourself. I promise you, it's really good for the soul. A wonderful gift this Christmas or any time.

"Outweighing" life's finer things
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-02
This well-written tale, reportedly based on a true story, demonstrates to young children how the Mass ought to "outweigh" life's supposedly finer things -- in this case the delicacies of a baker. As others have observed it is beautifully illustrated by Katalin Szegedi; her watercolor drawings help children develop an early appreciation for the three transcendentals: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. The book takes about seven minutes to read, so it's perfect for reading to young children (7 and under.) "The Weight of a Mass" deserves the fine praise it has received here and elsewhere, and it makes one look forward to other titles by the publisher Gingerbread House. Highly recommended.

Wow! This book has everything! A colorful new world explodes off of the pages. Enter Jay: a runaway from an orphanage looking to find a place where he could fit in. Brought to this magical place by Patty; the Sugarplum fairy, he takes on a quest to save King Otto, the Gingerbread King from the clutches of Queen Beatrice and her army of Stingers. The bumbling henchmen and Lord Vermin are classic villains while Stretch (Man of Taffy), Arach-Ned (Spider) and Prince Hans (Gingerbread Prince)fill out the courageous cast of characters. I don't want to ruin the ending, but it is quite amazing. Cliffhanger chapters and an easy read suitable for both kids and adults. Page turning adventure from start to finish. Judging from the artwork, this would make an excellent movie.

THE GINGERBREAD KINGDOM is an interesting and intriguing fantasy novel that combines elements of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 100th Anniversary Edition (Books of Wonder) with those from the child's board game Candyland. Filled with realistic characters, fantastical creatures, and a fun storyline, this is a book that's perfect for younger readers. It's also filled with enough action and adventure to keep older readers, especially those who are reluctant to pick up a huge novel, completely captivated.

Holman Orphanage, or "Hopeless Orphanage," as the children who live there have named it, is a sad place filled with little joy. The children who call it home know that every rule must be followed to the letter. No one knows that better than Jay, a boy who has born the brunt of Headmaster Holman's anger on more than one occasion. When he gets in trouble, yet again, for leaving the bathroom faucet dripping, he knows that he won't be able to survive another day spent in the cellar.

So he decides to get away from "Hopeless Orphanage" once and for all. Amid the cries of his roommates--Ben, Sam, and Timmy--Jay runs away from the Orphanage with nothing but the clothes he is wearing. He promises that once he finds a place to stay, he'll come back for the other boys. And then he's gone.

Except Jay finds more than he'd bargained for outside the walls of Holman Orphanage. The world outside is a strange, fascinating place, filled with magic. There are men made of gingerbread, Sugarplum Fairies, and even giant bees. Soon Jay finds himself caught up in a plan to save the Gingerbread King, King Otto, from the evil Queen Beatrice and her army of
Stingers. How is it that Jay ran away from one horrible situation only to find himself caught up in a battle of good versus evil?

Readers will find themselves rooting for Jay and his magical friends as he attempts to thwart Queen Beatrice from taking over the Gingerbread Kingdom. They'll also find that this small boy, once under the hard ruling thumb of a bitter Headmaster, just might have a few tricks up his sleeve to save King Otto from harm. An interesting book for all lovers of fantasy!

This Gingerbread book is the best I've seen. If you are a beginner you will have no problems succeeding with your first gingerbread houses. If you are a master, you will find that the detail and suggestions for expanding your craft are all in one book. As an "experienced gingerbread" architect, I am pleased to have all the photos of good ideas. That way I can take someone else's idea and add my own personal touch. As a family, we are at the point now where it doesn't feel like Christmas until we've built our houses. The new ideas are a must! One night last year when my house was all constructed, I got so in to it that I stayed up until 2:00am to finish it. You need a book like this which is long on ideas...have fun!

"Secrets of Gingerbread men" is a heartfelt, tear jerking trilogy of how profound God's role is in the life's of the people portrayed in the stories. It is stories about family, faith and love told with such vivid emotion that you feel as if you know each character in the story personally. The first story deals with a family of brothers that must face the impending death of one of them. The second story is about a marriage that stood the test of time filled with issues that might have destroyed any other marriage if they hadn't let God be a major force in their life. The last story is about a renewal of faith, when a young man realizes that he can no longer live in the current lifestyle he presently has and needs God back in his life in order to overcome accusations of involvement in a murder. Each story different, yet each story the same. "Secrets of Gingerbread Men" was a delightful and refreshing read that everyone that reads it will definitely enjoy.

Who says Christian fiction has to stay "in the closet"? The real things real people go through are the same things God can fix. Each of these stories touched area of life that I've experienced although my favorite was The Marriage Bed. Check it out.

I love making gingerbread houses. I've made quite a few, so I was looking for something with unique ideas. This houses in this book are very detailed. But don't let that scare beginners. One of the best things about this book is how it not only gives great ideas, but tells you how to use them. It starts with the patterns (great to have them full sized already) and tells you how to build the house from structure to finish. The variety and detail are wonderful. You could adapt each project to your own level of artistry. I would definitely recommend this as a keeper for the project shelf.

I am again very impressed by Theresa Layman. The gingerbread houses are just magical, not only because of the easy to use designs, but also because of the attention that has been paid to the details, which make every project just about perfect.

A lot of ideas, not only for Christmas (although I LOVE the Santa sleigh) each and every one just lovely. The directions are extended and clear. I cannot wait to make them all!

I have both of Teresa Layman's books on gingerbread, and this is my favorite of the two. If you enjoy making gingerbread structures, or just like practicing your decorating skill, this book is one you will turn to time and time again. What I like most about both of her books is how clear and detailed her instructions are on how things are put together, and how she uses items and ingredients that anyone can find anywhere, so that it is IMPOSSIBLE to mess it up. And even though the pictures look a bit intimidating, if you break each structure down into steps as she has laid out, and take it one thing at a time, you soon realize how simple they really are - they just LOOK impressive. The Haunted House is worth the price of the book all by itself! I loved making it - so much fun!

The story of "The Gingerbread Man" has for centuries enlightened the hearts of its young readers. It has helped to redefine the way that popular cuture work helps to shape an individual's way of interpreting the ideological work that the story portrays. That utopian feel to it; where people want to see the hero win in the end and come up on top.In fact the gingerbread man gets eaten in the end, which goes against that utopian type of fairy tale that the public genre tends to enjoy more. But for some reason this fairy tale has been one that against all odds, has remained popular, and entertaining and plain old FUN.Which is what the everyday reader wants to read, something that is fun and entertaining when it comes to fairy tales.

"The Gingerbread Man" supports the idea that women are mearly the creaters of life and house keepers, and warns young children of the consequences of being arrongant and disrespecting your maker. Even with these hidden themes any child should enjoy this story.

Grandma's Scrapbook is the companion book to Josephine Nobisso's Grandpa Loved. In this gentle, tender story, a girl looks back on all the wonderful summers she spent with her grandmother. Grandma has made remembering easy, because she kept a special scrapbook of their times together..."Grandma started that scrapbook because I was once too young to remember, and because one day, I may get too old to remember." Maureen Hyde's beautiful, detailed artwork enhances the story with just the right expressive touch. And, even though we find out that Grandma has died at the end of the book, the story is not maudlin, but uplifting and told with honesty, wisdom and much love.

An older girl doesn't remember when her grandma's hair was as black as a crow, but she cherishes the lock of it in her grandma's scrapbook. Pictures, wisps of her own baby hair, a flower, and a shell all hold the power of memory. Each precious item tells a story and becomes a living legacy as the girl shares the story of her grandma's scrapbook. With a majestic grace we are reminded that with loss comes sorrow, but memory offers comfort and joy.

The beauty of the illustrations underscores the beauty of the message in GRANDMA'S SCRAPBOOK. Illustrator Maureen Hyde brings her love of classical art to bear with her own fluid style, creating illustrations that look and feel like snapshots out of time yet are rich with intensity and emotion. Likewise, Josephine Nobisso pens a poignant tale of memory and joy captured in the pages of a scrapbook and shared through generations. Children will warm to this poignant tale, wishing to create their own scrapbook of priceless memories. Destined to become a classic, GRANDMA'S SCRAPBOOK comes very highly recommended.

This is a great book for the youngest readers! Your little ones will delight in the Gingerbread Cowboy's chase across the barren lands of the Old West as he runs to save his life. Many animals are after him but he manages to outwit them all, even the clever old coyote, with the help of the rancher's wife.

Kids will laugh when they hear the Gingerbread Cowboy chant, " ... You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man." They will certainly enjoy the colorful illustrations of the animals depicted against the contrasting, muted background of the Old West desert and mountains.

Hazel Rochman, BOOKLIST reviewer, describes this story best (see Editorial Reviews above): " ... universal trickster tale with a cowboy slant."

As a Kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for a new twist on an old story. One of the best ways to help children to start crafting their own stories is to have them use a character they already know and change the setting or other characters in the story to make it their own. This book is a great example of doing this. My class enjoyed the book. When I lent the book to another teacher, her children loved it so they were running around the yard calling Giddy up! as they chased each other. She told me that they didn't have that reaction to the original story!
