This is a good place to start before getting a tattoo. We get a lot of people in our shop who just come in and basically point at something in a book. It's nice to know some history and symbolism before you place it on yourself for good. The author has good insights and a few illustrations. This is not a picture book.

This book is fun and easy to read. I would recommend anyone who has infinite questions about getting a tattoo to read this book first. It contains rich information on about everything tattoo related. Did this book definitely help me make a decision? Oh yah!

I was a bit skeptical at a book with this type of format and approach but it was amazingly well done. It covered many of the questions I knew to ask and didn't know what the best answer was as well as the questions and answers I had yet to even consider. A very very useful guide to the entire process behind getting a tattoo and one I'd recommend to everyone who wants to feel fully informed before making such a permanent decision.

Honestly, for people like me, who have thought about a tattoo for years, not seriusly enough to do it, but not with so little importance that the idea is forgoten fast, this is a great start. If you have had many doubts about tattoos in general, this is a good start, and an interesting reading anyway.

This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.

Tell the children to turn off the TV and read this book. It just begs them to try their hand at making some "spilled milk" with blue construction paper and cotton balls or ripped white paper. Parents and grown-ups are allowed to make designs, too (They will want to do it!).

This book is awesome. Eliot presents an abundance of information. The information is organized and clear. Eliot does not assume what we already know, and what we have at our disposal. For example, many books will tell you how to create a mulch pile. You need this much brown matter, this much green matter, ... . That is all fine and dandy, but where do I magically get all of this material! Eliot understands this and explains many ways we can obtain the mulch material. He also does not assume your knowledge basis. For example, he will explain what and how a lugume works. This book is a constant resource for the organic gardener.

A great book!

While this is not quite Dr. Seuss' most inspirational book, it is certainly up there and is the type of book happily devoted to creativity. The illustrations are fun and silly, as is the text, but there is still that smidgen of proper Seussian wisdom.

Not too long, not too short, extremely entertaining as all Seuss books.
I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because I am very frugal about scary images with my kids and as I read it I remembered a couple of the pages scaring me when I was young.

This is my favorite of all the Dr. Seuss books I have seen. It is imaginative and the illustrations are really fun. My son and I read this book so many times that we had to buy a new one. When my son was an infant I would find him sitting on the floor looking at this book on his own and he would be mesmerized for several minutes while turning the pages.

Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! Is a charming book by the immortal Dr. Seuss who wrote many fine children's books in his time. Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! is no exception. This book encourages children to imagine and eventually explore the world without fear.

The book has excellent illustrations that amuse children--and adults; and the rhyming text always impresses me.

The book starts by encouraging children to use their imaginations to think up what other animals and/or places in the world may be like. This alone can stimulate a lot of conversation between you and your child about other places in the real world and what life is like there. This will go a long way toward teaching younger children about the world out there that one day they will be exploring for real. In addition, the book also has Dr. Seuss using his own imagination to give examples to children as to how to use their imaginations; we get words about foreign things and sounds like "guff" and "schlopp." This does a marvelous job of teaching children to always be optimistic.

The book has even more value. Younger children will profit from learning words critical to their growing vocabularies including yellow, blue, red, pink, black, white, night, day, left and right--and more! Excellent.

The book cover withstands some throwing around just in case your child accidentally mistreats it; and, as always, the paper quality of these books by Dr. Seuss is very good.

I highly recommend this fine children's book. It teaches much to both very young children and older children as well. Get this and enjoy it with your growing child!

This book was enriching. What I liked most about this book was it made me feel like I was being advised by a professional with an open point of view. This is not a paint-by-the-numbers book, but a work that will stir your imagination. It is an excellent resource for both professional and novice.

Planting Design Illustrated is full of useful information. It provided me a practical and philosophical edge on planting my next garden. I am not a professional landscaper, but I do love to design with plants. I was challenged at first by the writing style but once I became used to it, I discovered information that will help me when expanding my 2 acre meditation garden in Costa Rica.

Chen brings concepts and places them along side practice. It proves to stir the imagination for those putting the shovel to the soil. If you want to design your home landscape or like me, bite off more than you can chew with a large project, then this book should be read first.

Planting design will help you create a strong foundation for your landscape and gardens to grow on. If this book had had some professional editing I would have given it 5 stars. It's a great resource for those serious about doing things with both awareness and good technique. However the content is a serious 5 stars.

Filled with errors but also with new perspectives

This book consists of two sections: an overview of basic planting design concepts (with a distinct Chinese outlook), and an overview of Chinese garden design (with helpful comparisons to Japanese and Western garden design). The introduction consists of a tirade against other books on planting and landscape design, which I think is mostly right on target.

If you're easily bothered by English grammar errors, this book isn't for you. English is clearly not this author's first language...there are numerous mismatches of tense and number, and some English words are used in really strange ways.

Some other elements make for laborious reading. It's not uncommon for one paragraph to extend over several pages. Often an idea or term is introduced MANY pages before it is defined or explained.

There are some errors of fact regarding Western culture and values; I can't speak to how accurate the book is regarding Asian topics.

A fair amount of the information relating to Chinese garden design is only relevant to Chinese gardens, insofar as it relies heavily on symbolisms known only to the Chinese. Some of the concepts, however, are relevant to Western gardens. For example, I can see myself applying the principles of grouping trees of different sizes, using sound, and planting for four-season interest.

If designing really great landscapes is the most important thing in your life, this book probably belongs on your shelf. Just be sure to "Look Inside" the book to see if any of the shortcomings bother you.

One last note--I noticed that among the fifteen reviewers preceding me, not a one of them has ever rated any book at less than five stars. Caveat emptor.

I am delighted with this book because I am a Master Gardener and I also an expert in Feng Shui. He has mentioned the role of symbolisim in relation to the planting and I feel that is also a great part of building your planting design. This book will help you set up your spaces easily and provide just the right pattern that will suit your property. I like his easy to understand photos of laying out areas in different forms and I especially liked the Motif pattern and I plan on using that in my landscaping designs this spring. Chen has captured all of the details that sometimes are forgotten by architects in designing our properties.

A good book for the reference shelf

As a gardener, I'm always on the lookout for good books on plants and design - Planting Design Illustrated has both. Chen organizes his material on planting design in a straight forward and logical manner, moving from basic design concepts to analysis of actual gardens. He richly illustrates his text with drawings and pictures. The design student/landscape architect will find his analysis illuminating as he derives and illustrates universal concepts from his analysis. The ordinary gardener will like the history sections, discussion on contrasting gardens and the tables on plant symbolism. I'll keep this one on my reference shelf for a long time.

This book has a lot of knowledge from a doctor who seems to know her stuff. It is helpful for me because I am getting ready to find a doctor and I will better be able to explain my situation. The book is a little bit of a difficult read, but I read it in short spurts and it is fine. Overall, it is a good book for anyone who has PCOS or who thinks that they might have PCOS but doesn't have a diagnosis. It can help someone go to their doctor and know how to tell them about their symptoms and what kind of tests to ask for.

I have really LOVED this book since I was 13 years old and a friend gave it to me for my birthday: God bless her! It has been a book that I have read and read and read over the years, just when I needed some taste of the ingenuity and the freshness of youth. And the Annotated Anne of Green Gables gave me an useful look into the culture and setting of the adventure of young Anne (spelled with a "e"), especially valuable for me, being Italian.

I'm not concerning myself with the story of Anne, which is a classic and rightly so, but the annotations are often times not enlightening or of any interest or are even bizarre and often give away parts of the story, which is utterly annoying. The additional information in the back about PEI, life at the time and more are interesting, but again more than once they give away key elements of later books in the Anne story.
If you know the story of Anne already, this might be an intersting second read, otherwise I recommend to stay away from the annotations so as not to spoil the wonderful story.

This book is great if you have to write a report about Anne of Green Gables and Lucy Montgomery. This book was very informative and helped me complete my project. There are lots of interesting pieces of information about the author, the time period, and the location in this book. There are many diffrent black and white photographs illustrating the background information for the book. The pictures of where the author based her story on were very useful. I enjoyed this book. However, if you are just looking for the novel without all the extra information, you might want to get another version.

The more I pray and use this book it puts me into the prayer mood and keeps me talken to Jesus! I world give this book to a friend or family; it will teach them how to pray and will open their hearts it will fill them up with so much love! When you ask God into your life and you don't pray or talk to Him something just happens you lose that closeness with God. If you are like me you just don't know what to say. Well, with this book it will open up your mind and heart to Jesus! It will help you understand the Catholic Faith and how pure they are when it cames to their hearts and in their faith! A very nice, inexpensive book of prayers. Nicely bound in handsome imitation leather jacket. This is my 'go to' book when I need a little extra spiritual guidance for the day. I use this for my morning short devotional prayers and when I am inclined to say the rosary I use this as my guide to the 'mysteries'.

This is a very comprehensive and easy-to-understand prayer book that every Catholic should own.

Somehow someone overnight exchanged my good old eyes that could read the small print on the back of my credit card bill with someone's tired out used and weary eyes that don't work that well. Either that or someone swappped out my arms for shorter ones that cannot hold text far enough away to come into view.

So people like me are very grateful for visible fonts, as in this prayer book.

The Rev. Maurus of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) has been publishing prayer books for some twenty five years. This is a reprint of an edition from twenty years ago. If it is important to you to include the new Luminous Mysteries in your Rosary celebrations, please be certain to get this, the latest edition.

You will find here the regular prayers of the Faithful, including morning, afternoon and evening prayers, as well as such sacramental celebrations as the Stations of the Cross and the Eucharistic Adoration.

The Celebration of the Sacraments includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and of course the Mass, with Communion prayers. There are prayers for before and after Mass, and for a variety of Masses, including the Ordinary of the Mass. In the old days this might partially be called a Missal and more; although it cannot replace a Missal with the cycle of readings, it can certainly serve as supplement.

Prayers of the Saints are included. You can also find here Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity, as well as prayers for sickness, and in death. The commentary on the prayers is also a helpful companion. A section on Our Faith may also be found useful, if necessarily incomplete (study the theologians for more on this, including Jesus: An Experiment in Christology, Praying With Jesus And Mary: Our Father, Hail Mary and Mary: Model of Justice (Reflections on the Magnificat)!).

As a Londoner, who learnt to appreciate American football at 21, I wanted background reading to enhance my enjoyment. I started by looking into favourite players of mine, so came this book!

I wanted to understand what goes on in players mind before a big game. How they react to the coach barking orders. How they conduct themselves on and off the field. This book helped me to do all these things and more. Favre is not a roboback, he is an individual with flair and creativity, which is why this book is so entertaining.

I seem to be able to climb right on into Brett's head, and into his personal life through the pages in this book, which is enlightening to say the least. We hear about his highs and lows, and he is frank about his addiction to Vicodin, and his relationships with players and coaches alike.

I think this book is for American Football fans only, which explains why this was my first Amazon purchase, (This book isn't in print in the UK) but for a fan of the Packers, or just a Football fan in general, you can do no wrong in buying this, which will no doubt increase your respect for the stress players endure every game.

This is a good book ,the problem came from the fixation they put on his painkillers addiction and the problems it bring with his wife and teammates. You also have a lot of details about the health problems this addiction caused to him,a little bit like "Drugs is bad to you,see what it do to me."His wife almost let him down for that, his teammates are tired of him asking for Vicodin and others painkillers. The two or three first paragraphs talk about that, but chapter after chapter they come back with it.The book talk to much about his "post popularity" life and not enough of him when he was unknown. His "post popularity" life are report in all the daily newspapers, that why I expect to learn more about Bret Favre before he was a star. They pass to fast on his teens years, his collegiate years. The reason to write a biography his to talk about the unknown parts of someone life, but in this book you just found what everybody read on the last five years newspapers. That a good but incomplete book.

First I want to say something about the book. It's great!! If your a true fan of the Packers and want to know about one of the teams, and NFLs greatest players, buy this book. It shows you the kind of person Favre is on and off the field. He takes you through the ups and downs of his life and career that have made him the person and player he is today. Now, for the other reviews I read before writing this one. What promted some numbnuts to write about the packers loss to St. Louis in the playoffs in a book review?? They must be a Bears fan! Another one decided to write that Brett and his family were (...) That's intelligent. I know when I go to read a review about a book that interests me, I want to have to wade through the garbage that idiots like that jerk take up space with. For those of you with a brain in your head, trust me, Farve: For The Record is a great read!!

It is quite rare for anyone to write a successful sequel to someone else's work. But Carr and Green have written a brilliant continuation to H Beam Piper's book "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen."

H Beam Piper's book was one of his "Paratime" books. Back when he was writing, the idea of an empire built on travel between alternative worlds was a comparatively unusual one: until recently only Piper and Keith Laumer (Worlds of the Imperium et. seq.) had done anything like this. Recently the genre has expanded enormously with Barnes's "Closers" series, Harry Turtledove (Crosstime Traffic) and David Weber (Gates of Hell) amongst those getting in on the act. If you've read and enjoyed any of those, H Beam Piper's Paratime books were the original.

In Piper's book "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen," Calvin Morrison, a state trooper from our world or one like it, is accidentally transported to another timeline where Gunpowder is controlled by a corrupt church of the "Gunpowder God", Stryphon. He breaks the church monopoly and helps a kingdom which the church was about to crush to survive.

Green and Carr's sequel is about the major war which follows when "Stryphon's House" comes back for revenge.

I strongly recommend this book, but agree that to get the most out of it, read "Lord Kalvan of otherwhen" first.

Great!

H. Beam Piper (1904-64) was one of the premier science-fiction authors of the 1960s, and should rightly be considered one of the all-time greats in that field. Among the wonderful books that Mr. Piper published during his all-too-short career was Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen. In that book, a Pennsylvania State Trooper name Calvin Morrison is accidentally lifted out of his own space-time continuum, and deposited on a parallel Earth, where some of the Aryans went east, across the Pacific and into North America. Dropped into the midst of a war of conquest, directed by a religion that holds a monopoly on gunpowder, Calvin must use his knowledge of military history to save himself and his new friends.

In this 1985 sequel, Piper fans John F. Carr and Roland Green take us back to the world of Lord Kalvan. Having saved his new nation of Hos-Hastigos from destruction only last year, Calvin Morrison (now Lord Kalvan) now finds a new campaigning season upon him. But, the House of Styphon is not about to see this new force put an end to their gunpowder wealth and authority. And now, Kalvan must prepare to meet an even greater threat, and once more use his knowledge of military history to save a seemingly impossible situation.

Now, I am a massive H. Beam Piper fan, so I went into this book with a little trepidation. I mean, can anyone write a book in Piper's universe with anything like the right feel to it? Well, in fact this is an excellent book - well written and a worthy sequel to the original. All of the characters are here, but they have grown and changed, just like you would expect real people to do. The action is almost non-stop with some excellent battle scenes and tons of action and adventure.

So, if you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, or just his Lord Kalvan story, then you should get this book. It's great.

Also, if you are a fan of alternate-reality science fiction, then this book is something you should consider - but definitely read Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen first.

An outstanding follow up to "Lord Kalvan Of Otherwhen"

H. Bean Piper wrote Lord Kalvan Of Otherwhen and then passed on before he could finish the story. In "Great King's War" John Carr and Roland Green have continued the story and in the process expanded the Piper Universe. This is an outstanding book, well worth any military science fiction/alternate history fan's attention. The paperback from Ace is getting hard to find in good or better condition, but a hardback edition can be purchased from Mr. Carr at Hostigos.com. It is well worth your time and money. Mr. Carr has also published two additional volumes in the Kalvan saga; Kalvan Kingmaker and Seige Of Tarr-Hostigos. If you enjoyed Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, I think you will enjoy the follow on books.

In the top 5 of military sci fic/fantasy books I've ever read! I stumbled across this book years ago and could not believe it was so faithful to the orginal story by H Beam Piper (Lord Kalvin of Otherwhen) Its a fascinating period of Terran history grafted onto a realistic alternate world and done with style and swerve! I have written both Mr Carr & Green about the followup but it seems stalled. Both of them did their research on this one however and it shows. No miracles from the "real" world to help, tons of political intrigue, realistic characters etc etc. For anyone who likes good deep stories and hard realistic fighting will enjoy this read. You can actually smell the gunpowder and hear the thunder crash of steel on steel!

(Aug 2006 update) This book has been expanded with the addition of some 100 or more pages. The expanded version is really worth the purchase price(from Pequod Press) It explains more of the political situations Kalvin is facing and the internal wrangling of the opposing Styphon's House and its allies. Even the battle scenes get some additional work and unlike some of Carr's work this time he does a good job of illustrating the complexities of the fighting. We also see the character and background of mercenary captain Philidestro get more mention. There is alot more insight into the Paratime home culture and it's politcal ramifactions in Kalvin's timeline. Though either version is a must read, this new edition is the better money spent! Mr. Carr has done some excellent work here!
