This book is a call to action. Makes you want to run to the kitchen with it's beautiful images and interesting stories so you can read while you're waiting for the oven to heat up. With so many unique recipes-not just chocolate cake, it's a bargain!

Wow! I've made perhaps half of the recipies in this book, and whilst I have my favorites (the brownies are just to die for), there's not one I wouldn't make again. Most recipies do require good, dark and generally expensive chocolate, but it's well worth the extra expense.
If you love chocolate and don't mind cooking, you'll love this.
If you don't love chocolate yet, this might just convert you.

One of the best

This is a great bargain, as the first reviewer states. There are a plethora of beautiful and inspirational photos, but the recipes are achievable. Many fancy chocolate cookbooks have fabulous looking recipes, but they require half a day, or more, to complete.
My daughter and I just made the Guiness Stout Cake and were very happy with the results.
I haven't tried their easy way of tempering chocolate, yet, but it looks quick and fairly foolproof.
One of the trends in chocolate cookbooks recently, see Chantal Coady's book, is savory dishes. This book includes a variety of tempting fare in that department, too.

This is the story of one woman's journey searching for her roots in Israel. She leaves her empty nest, flings herself into a violent Israel and finds herself embroiled in politics, deception and the Israeli workforce. A torrid love affair feeds the frenzy to find herself. In these years, she moves back and forth between both worlds (the US and Israel) for art, for love and for lust.

Reaction To The Book

The Green Beach grabs the reader from the start. The main character, referred to as "she" throughout the book, threw herself into the world of Israel, sometimes beautiful, sometimes sinister. Her drama plays out in the context of a self-destructive love affair and some tense political episodes that point out the discrimination of Jews against Jews. The main characters are complex in personality and memorable because of their distinct, not always agreeable, actions. "She" shows her complexity with her loyalty and compassion to family, friends and sometimes strangers in need. Yet, she can be blunt and self-absorbed. I found the sequencing of events confusing at times, because of the flashbacks. Nevertheless, I got the story holistically and read the book straight through.

Conclusion

The Green Beach shows the best and worst of human nature. It is a gripping story of a woman's fight for survival, emotionally and physically. The author tells a story that needs to be heard as she paints an historical and political picture of Israel from her unique perspective. Catherine Hand's vivid writing style laced with her own poetry and love interests is a great read.

The Green Beach is a passionate and historical account of an American woman's relationship with Israel as she moves in and out of the art world to the Israeli underworld. A shocking story of lust, love and politics.

A classic book that everyone should read. Having grown up watching John Wayne in The Green Berets and listening to Barry Saddler sing "Put silver wings on my son's chest..." I should have read this book 30+ years ago.

Many parallels to today's conflict in the Middle East. It's amazing how little has changed.

This book is a classic. Set in Vietnam, Robin Moore was one of the first people to expose America to the horrors of the Vietnam war. You get to see America's soldiers fighting and braving these nightmarish war. Pick up this, and The Secret Wars of the Green Berets

The new edition of Robin Moore's Vietnam War era classic "The Green Berets" is as timely and relevant today as it was when it was published over forty years ago.

What is amazing is that the problems faced by the Green Berets in Vietnam described by Moore are the very same problems faced by our soldiers today in the War on Terror. These include the problems of corrupt local soldiers, relegious differences and the ago old cultural clash between the conventional military mindset and the unconventional warrior. If one changed the locations names from Vietnam to Iraq the stroeis would be ripped from today's headlines.

The new edition also contains materials which were not in the original edition. It was also enjoyable to read the various stories which conributed elements to the John Wayne movie which was based on the book. The book is well worth your time.

This book was long overdue. Philip J. Lowry certainly did his research to find all these ballparks--even including some that were used briefly at the turn of the century! Listed are parks used by both the American and National Leagues, the Federal, Union, and Players Leagues of early baseball history, and the Negroe Leagues. Now I'm waiting for the minor league edition to come out.

THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST EVER WRITTEN FOR THE HISTORY AND DETAIL OF BASBALL STADIUMS. THE AUTHOR DOES AN INCREDIBLE JOB OF FINDING THE MOST MINUTE DETAILS OF SEVERAL STADIUMS. IT WAS YEARS IN THE MAKING. THIS IS A MUST FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS WHO ENJOY NOSTALIGIA AND WANT TO BROADEN THEIR HORIZONS ON THE HISTORY OF EARLY BASBALL STADIUMS TO THE MODERN DAY. AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK AND A MUST FOR COLLECTORS OF BASEBALL HISTORY.

It boggles my mind that the author actually did all that research to find out the dimensions, important events, descriptions, and in many cases photos of every major league ballpark ever to host a game. The result is a feeling like I imagine it would be to see a game at Fenway Park: a visit to a temple of baseball. The title could not be more perfectly chosen.

Lowry has also promoted a bit of healing. Having recognized what any aficionado of baseball history knows--that the Negro Leagues of old were surely major leagues on a par with the AL and NL, except in recordkeeping--he spurs interest in a too-often forgotten part of baseball's past.

This book is absolutely essential to the library of any true lover of baseball history.

Once you begin reading the Green Dollhouse, you will not want to put it down. This book is a refined blend of educational material for children and adults alike. Creativity and art are presented in a very accessible fashion with an emphasis on problem solving. The light and playful manner in which this book is presented complements its role as a resource for learning about suitability. Amongst its colorful pages you will find information on what is available, valuable and possible.

Filled with beautiful photographs depicting dollhouses built by teams from around the world, the Green Dollhouse entertains while educating the reader. The process of reusing household materials and turning them into art pieces seems to be at work.

On the pictures throughout you will discover everything from paperclips, stamps and milk cartons to LED light fixtures, rotating PV solar panels and organic wall paper. In the narrative you will find information on how to select appliances that have minimal environmental impact, and how to make recycling fun and creative ("Fun Facts"). If you want to turn your reading into a hands-on experience, look for the pages with instruction on how to build your own doll dwelling ("Fun Exercises").

The dollhouses in the book originated from a contest sponsored by Sustainable San Mateo County in California. The participants were challenged to design and build functional and aesthetic pieces that would inspire people of all ages to make their own homes more environmentally sustainable and healthy.

The Green Dollhouse could be the perfect gift for a friend, child or someone interested in the subject of architecture, sustainability or the innovative process of transforming common household materials into functional pieces of art.

This book is a delightful introduction to green building both for adults and kids. I knew very little about the subject when I sat down to peruse this book and was surprised at the amount of information I gained. The pictures are magnificent - they're eye-catching and fun and would make this book enjoyable for kids any age. The little "Fun Facts" and "Fun Exercises" that go with most of the dollhouses are great little highlights. The directions on how to build your own green dollhouse at the end is a perfect addition and will hopefully be used by many. This book would be great to have in the schools and used by teachers. Building a green dollhouse following the books guidelines would make an engaging and mind expanding project for almost any grade level.

You can tell that much thought and attention to detail was put into this book. If you are interested at all in preserving the environment and teaching our kids about ways to do that, this book belongs in your library.

A wonderful short book, written from the perspective of children, that covers important and serious issues that affect our living world and it's future. The author has tried to stress, rather eloquently, the need to involve the future generation into matters that will have a lasting impact on their lives.

This book will appeal to both young and adult readers.

As a lawyer and environmentalist in India, I was struck by the research done by the author on all types of environmental issues facing the world and that civilizations have been wiped out by disregard for sustainable development. This is a highly readable book for teenagers and adults alike and I enjoyed the easy style that the author has used, marrying the concept of conservation with the mythology of dragons.
A reminder to all of us, with simple tips that everybody can use in their daily life to protect the environment, at home or school or work, while shopping or on holidays...
Very informative indeed.

Never having heard of Lucius Shepard, I bought a used paperback copy of "Green Eyes" on the strength of its unusual back-cover plot synopsis and the fact that it could be had for 50 cents...a somewhat ordinary procedure of mine for reasons I'll not go into. In other words, I approached this novel with very little in the way of expectations and, perhaps for that very reason, was simply amazed at my good fortune. This story, itself one that does not easily fit into any genre niche, is without a doubt one of the two or three most poignant modern novels this reader has ever had the pleasure of encountering...made "Papa Kurt"(Vonnegut) sound tired and blase'. Embued with vivid, striking imagery...plot turns impossible to forsee, yet satisfyingly logical...complex in its multilayerings, but as smooth as a luminous egg...an absolutely staggering ending, very hard to describe. I finished the book feeling awed and humbled. Snippets of dialogue, fantastic scenes, emotional depths, these and more swirled through my mind for weeks afterword. If Lucius Shepard's powers were not yet fully matured when he wrote this, I daresay he may write THE best fantastic story of our generation.

Unclassifiably Brilliant Horror/SF/Fantasy

This is Shepard's first book, and he knocks it out of the park. It begins with a fascinating concept: if you can revive the recently dead, for just a few minutes, what will they tell you? What have they seen while dead?

And then, the story takes off in completely unexpected ways, and the book becomes completely unique, spanning genres and confounding expectations.

If you like horror, if you like SF, if you like fantasy, this will fulfill your expectations.

I read this book when it was first published because of a Damon Knight Blurb on the cover: "I wonder if anyone else knows what a good writer Lucius Shepard is?" Being a Damon Knight fan I bought the book on his recommedation. Because of the book I read all of Shepard's books.

Green Eyes was one of those delightful books you find now and then that you read non-stop. It appears to be three novelettes of differing genres put together to make a novel, but woven together with such skill it becomes a whole. Because of the three separate parts to the novel I had no idea where Shepard was going with this story. If you are lucky enough to find a copy of this book I envy your first reading.

Jeffery Beam, poeat and gardener, understands that human beings are part of the natural world, not observers standing apart from it or lords insisting on remaking it. He makes our connectedness wonderfully clear with poems focussed primarily on plants, from dandelions to wildflowers to pumpkins and cabbages and on to lilacs and tulip trees. Gentle poems, tender poems, poems unafraid of death and rejoicing at resurrection. Reading this book lets us go forth into gardens, fields, and woods as part of the green world.

An hilarious folk tale told in the vernacular. "Oh law!" Must be read it out loud for maximum hilarity and it'll "witch ye sure." My 4 year old loves it so much she has learned to read it, hillbilly slang and all. There aren't many children's books this delightful. I just wonder why it was allowed to go out of print, and why it hasn't won any awards.

The Green Gourd is hilarious. I enjoyed reading it because the dialect was fun to do. The kids adored the silliness of a "witchy green gourd" chasing the old lady and "fumping" everything on the way. We both loved the illustrations. I love this book so much that I'm going to see if I can locate a used copy (it's out of print). Someday I'd like to read it to my grandchildren.

This children's book is so funny, that it is hard to read out loud. My children loved the story, of an old country woman who needs a gourd and picks one before it's ripe. It is bewitched and proceeds to "fump" her and anyone & everything else in its path. Each time the fumping episode occurred, I laughed out loud and my kids asked me to read it to them each night ("one more time, one more time!!!" Expect to be delighted as the illustrations are beautiful, too.
