"106 Yards" gets 5 stars from me. As one who began following Al Carmichael's exploits as a post-war star with the El Toro Marines, at Santa Ana College, as a USC Trojan and in the NFL, I thoroughly enjoyed this editorial and pictorial trip, which brought back so many great and nostalgic memories. It's a "must read" for every USC fan or alum, as well as anyone who appreciates one of football's truly "class acts."

Helped Me with My New Year's Resolution!

Review Date: 2008-01-16
Global warming has freaked me out. So for 2008, I made a commitment to become more aware of what I could personally do to curtail global warming and to make changes. Out of all the books I looked at, I chose this one becasue it seemed really straight forward--there wasn't a lot of "fluff" (i.e.,rich celebrities telling me how they went green--although I'm all for the cause). I'm happy to say that it has proved to be a great resource for me in keeping my resolution. I've already taken a few steps and I plan to take more! It kind of lit my fire and now my family is getting on board, too. It has made me so aware of all the green choices I can make every day now. This book has helped me to take action and I'm really REALLY happy to be part of the solution rather than feeling helpless. It contains lots of suggestions that don't cost a fortune. Very handy--I highy recommend it. If I had read it sooner, I would've given it as a Christmas gift to all my friends!!! Oh well, next year...

Very Impressive Collection of Green Ideas

Review Date: 2008-01-10
I'm quite impressed with this book which I found at Barnes & Noble this week. It's extremely comprehensive and includes many green ideas that I have never heard before. Most of the 50 steps include a list of suggestions, so there must be several hundred ideas.

The book's suggestions are very practical and specific: for example, it talks about a company that will install solar power in your home at no cost and will charge you the same amount monthly that you currently pay for electric (and keep your payments at that same rate for up to 25 years).

There is a considerable amount of explanation why the steps are helpful. The Frequently Asked Questions section gave me a better understanding of greenhouse gases, global temperatures and global warming than I had before. And it gave examples of how mankind has achieved some success in reversing atmospheric trends in the past (the ozone layer and air pollution) to explain why we should be confident we can make an impact in the fight against global warming.

I also liked the section that explains how to use the book, and suggests ways to reward yourself for meeting your green goals. I think this book would be helpful for people who want to change a few things in their life or those who want to go green in every category. It will also help people to understand why environmentalists are making choices like buying organic food and clothing, and avoiding products that use petroleum, petrochemicals and petrochemical pesticides.

Simple is right!

I love the easy-to-use format of the book. It is compiled into brief sections that are packed full of important information.

The book is so positive, it seems that the Earth really can be saved from global warming, if everyone would just take the first baby steps! The inclusion of online resources make everything seem all the easier to achieve.

My favorite suggestions are the steps that not only save the environment, but save money too, another precious resource!

For a realistic, hearfelt look at what it was like to dance at an infamous strip club, have a long love affair with porn king Artie Mitchell, and hang out with Hunter Thompson, this is the book to read! Full of uncanny detail, Corday's story is affectionate, funny, sexy, and a real page-turner. With a searing account of Artie's slaying by his brother Jim and the motives behind it, the murder trial which cost him $1.3 million, and the political connections that helped him get off with serving just 3 years at San Quentin.

Simone Corday not only provides intimate details about working at the O'Farrell Theater, she kept track of conversations between she and her long-time lover Artie Mitchell, and her compadre Hunter S. Thompson in journals.

In her memoir, you are like a fly on the wall, drinking in so many delicious details about her life with these over-the-top counterculture icons.

It's a sensual, emotional page turner. You won't want to put it down, and then you will be crying out for more, lingering on that final page, and searching for old Mitchell Brothers' films to get more glimpses on her extraordinary life.

I had the cassette tape version of this book when I was younger and listened to it every night when I went to bed. When my first son was 4 I started to play it for him too, but one night the cassette player ate the tape and it was ruined forever. I have looked off and on over the last few years looking for a CD version and was soooooooo happy to find it on Amazon! This brings back so many memories and I am happy that my youngest son is still young enough to be able enjoy it too!

I was given the orginal book with cassette by my Grandmother in the early 1970's. I cherished the stories as a child and was excited when I uncovered my lost copy. This summer I introduced the Little Green Dragon as a part of storytime, a weekday ministry for preschoolers at our church. These stories lend themselves easily to the use of props and they encourage audience participation. The kids love them and beg for more. For Christmas my mother gave my children ages 2 and 4 years old their very own copy and we have been enjoying it daily. We also enjoy listening to the CD when we are on long car rides.

I really liked this book, and so did my 6 year old son. I have a boy with special needs who is 5, and this author captured the curiousity and excitement of a small child so well, and then revealed the disability of the boy in the book in a very positive manner. My son had fun reading it, and I know that the ideas that were in the background are what I want my son to "get". I would definetely recommend this book.

"All Kinds of Friends, Even Green!" is written and photographed by Ellen B. Senisi. The text and photos tell a story about Moses, a disabled boy who gets around in his wheelchair. At school, his class is given an assignment to write about friends. Moses is inspired to write about a very special friend: Zaki, an iguana. Zaki is also disabled, having lost her back toes after a mite infection; Moses has a special affection with her.

This is a wonderful portrait of a multiethnic school environment that includes disabled youngsters. The acknowledgement section of the book thanks the participants at Zoller School in Schenectady, New York. After the main text there are three interesting supplemental articles: about disabilities, about young Moses, and about iguanas. The colorful, lively photos are enjoyable to look at. This book effectively reminds us that disability is an issue that affects both human and non-human beings. Moses and Zaki are likeable and admirable "characters," and the book movingly celebrates the special love a child has for a cherished pet.

Just love it. The readings are fascinating, and the introduction to each piece gives me the framework I need to understand it. The book gives proper balance to women's issues and takes a broad sociological approach--helps me understand more about the United States, as well as Environmentalism. Highly recommend this book!

This book is excellent. The anthologies available for the environmental movement in the United States are quite outdated, and we have needed another for a long time. The selections cover the subject matter very well, and keep the reader (and my students) interested--no small feat! His introduction is actually the best brief treatment of the subject I have ever read. I highly recommend this book. While my specialty is the history of fire, I find this book an extremely useful "big picture" for any class on environmentalism.

Best of 3 Audio Versions

As another reviewer, I, too, have enjoyed the book and the DVDs immensely, but I have also grown to really enjoy audio books. Looking for an audiobook about a simpler time, I decided to buy the audio version of Anne of Green Gables. But the first version I purchased, read by Shelly Frasier, just didn't bring the book to life for me. Ms. Frasier seemed bored with the passages describing the beautiful flowers or some other such delights. So, I looked for another version. I then bought the version read by Susan O'Malley. It was better, but Anne still didn't have the energy I was longing for. So I tried once more and purchased this version, which is, in my opinion, the best of the three. The reader seems to actually enjoy the beauty of the world as much as Anne does. Sometimes the voice sounds just slightly too "old" for Anne's actual age, but the enthusiasm is captured wonderfully. If you love listening to audiobooks in the car to pass the time during long commutes, this is the version I would recommend - to all kindred spirits.

**ATTN: Kindred Spirits - this is an ABSOLUTE GEM!!!**

I am a big "Anne with an E" fan. Have the DVDs, have the books. I decided to complete my collection by getting the audio book. I COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED!!! Barbara Caruso (narrator) has the characters and their voices "down pat". She captures the enthuasiam, the essence of the lovable, imaginative orphan known as Anne Shirley! The CDs BUBBLE with Anne's love of life - truly a joyous experience. (Although she does have her "tragical" tribulations when she is in "the depths of despair".) Also, great voices for Marilla Cuthbert and Rachel Linde. I actually had to compare the CD to the DVD - I thought that maybe Colleen Dewhurst (actress who played Marilla) was the narrator for the audio book. I cannot decide which I like better - this audio book or the movie (and I so ADORE the movie). I listened to the audio book in the car and had SUCH a good time with it! If you love the movie and if you commute, you will likely enjoy listening to this in the car. HIGHLY,HIGHLY RECOMMEND! TEN STARS! ********** P.S. In Anne's words "there is SO much scope for the imagination!"

Wonderful to listen to!

After reading other reviews I decided to purchase this audio version of Anne of Green Gables. Although I haven't heard the other 2 versions, I agree with another reviewer in that Barbara Caruso captures the spirit of Anne perfectly! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her voice and appreciated the different tones she used to portray Anne, Matthew and Marilla - she makes them sound like completely different people. I bought this to listen to on my commute to/from work and not only did it make the commute fly by, I even found myself sitting out in my car during lunch just so I could enjoy more time with it. I've read the book 3 times and I've seen the movie at least a dozen times. That said, there must be something in Barbara Caruso's voice that makes me totally enjoy the story all over again. I would highly recommend this story and this audio version to anyone.

The product was exactly what I was looking for, easy to find and therefore an easy purchase. My only complaint would be the expected arrival time. Initially, I picked a shipping time that would have brought the product to me in 2-3 weeks. When I decided to upgrade shipping to something sooner, my quoted arrival time never changed, and I wasn't given the option of cancelling my order. Needless to say the product came early. But I just wish the quoted arrival time was more accurately posted.

I am an EXTREME fan of Anne Shirley--I've read the books, seen the movies, been to Prince Edward Island...and seen the musical! I just love this musical...I've seen it twice! This past summer and the summer of 2002. I have the soundtrack and I listen to it all the time. I just wish I could watch the actual production all the time. This musical is wonderful, so do buy the script and put on a local musical...you'll be sure to have a pleased audience!

Review Date: 2000-08-22
This play is an excellent view in the wonderful world of Anne. I fell in love with the movie at a VERY young age, so was extatic to find out that it also had it's own musical! This play is impecably written... perfectly portraying the spunk of Anne, critical nature of Marila, and kind heart of Matthew! It even lets you into the world of a few minor characters, such as Lucilla Harris the shopkeeper, whom we all know for selling Matthew Cuthburt the dress with 'puffy sleeves'. It has the perfect balance of emotion and comedy. After reading this play, I actually brought it too my local theater company. It is in the works, and will be performed this fall! The lines are wity, and the songs catchy... what else could you ask for when looking for a musical with substance?! Whether you are looking for a future theatrical project, or simply a fun read, I know that you will find this play to be VERY rewarding!

This is the amazing story of one young woman's faith that leads her to find peace and healing in her search for tomorrow.
Doris has captured the meaning of faith and shown by example that there really can be Another Tomorrow beyond the pain of loss. Thru her faith in God, Doris tells how she managed to triumph over the loss of her young husband, get through the grief, and lead she and her toddler son to a victorious future. There's much in this delightful little book that will remind you of Stephen Potter's "upmanship" books, as in gamesmanship. Potter, however, tended to emphasize the psychological ploys, and "winning games without actually cheating". You'll get the full gamut, however, in the Art of Coarse Rugby--psychology, rule-bending, and outright cheating. All done in good--or bad--fun. You'll read about the Old Rottinghamians, and their arch-foe the Bagford Vipers. You'll read about Slasher Williams ("so called because of his habit of letting his nails grow long in the rugby season").

It's suggested that one should always carry a small penknife, so that if you're ahead and worried about the other side catching up, you surreptiously puncture the rugby ball (in the Old Rottinghamian matches, spare rugby balls are an extreme rarity). If you have false teeth, leave them with the referee. If you need to bite an opponent, retrieve them from the ref, bite away, and return them to the ref. Having blood-spattered goalposts on your home turf can work wonders. Tell your rivals that you're taking up a collection before the match for an opponent in the previous match who had both his legs broken by a particularly vicious tackle by one of your players. There are suggestions about drawing up ambiguous instructions to help your opponents find your ground--hoping that 4-5 will get lost, and then if you must loan the other club a player, you always have a real ringer available. Bribing groundskeepers to close the field 15 minutes early when you're in the lead is a must. And so on.

We're not talking about the Lions here, or the All-Blacks, just low-level club rugby. You'll find this book lots of fun!
