Outstanding text..a work of art...great gift item

I was looking for a meaningful gift for a recent nursing school graduate who had encountered some major challenges that had threatened her graduation. This book is a magnificent history of the profession going back to pre-history. The text provides the full sweep of history as well as excellent analysis of the role of this profession in the evolution of modern healthcare. But the hundreds of color plates and illustrations turn the book into a true work of art. Reproductions of beautiful paintings, manuscripts, and historic photographs bring the text to life. This book helped me to achieve my goal of lifting the spirits of this young graduate, as she was clearly inspired by both the art and the substantial textual content!

The perfect gift for a nurse

This book is a great gift idea for all nurses. I bought one during my senior year of nursing school to help with a take-home exam. Not only did it help with the exam, but it was actually very interesting to read. The format of the book is nice because it has a timeline, and is organized by major historical events in nursing. Even if you don't like reading about history, the pictures tell a story themselves. It is a great coffee table book to have just to flip through and enjoy the beautiful artwork and pictures of nurses from past to present.

Every nurse should own this book

This book is a treasure for the profession of nursing. I saw the first edition of this book while a nursing student in the author's nursing history course. Dr. Donahoe performed extensive research in writing this book. It is a moving account of those things that drew me to the profession of nursing and a thorough education for those unaware of nursing's history. The artwork is phenomenal and shows how nurses have been captured in art throughout history as well.

Very Good Wide-Ranging Nursing History Book

Review Date: 2005-02-05
This is one of the best nursing history books available. It covers the period of nursing from pre-history through modern ages. Because the period of time covered is so vast, that very period is both the book's greatest strength and its weakness.

As the subtitle of the book implies, it is an illustrated history book. Because the time period is so vast, the illustrations are taken from museums, libraries, and other public access collections. As a result, the images are somhow...familiar. And, because it is a history book which covers such a wide range, it must deal with very specific aspects of each period, rather than an in-depth account of any one period. As such, we are given the history of nursing itself. This is a wonderful history, and the illustrations, although many may be familiar, are diverse enough to please even the most casual reader. I highly recommend it.

The only alternative to this book, in my opinion, is a book by one Michael Zwerdling, titled "Postcards of Nursing: A Worldwide Tribute," also available on Amazon. Postcards of Nursing focuses on the 20th century and, instead of being an illustrated history book, is really anannotated art book. The art is separate from the text, something which highlights the graphics. The images themselves are unusual in that they are taken from postcards, and, frankly, are not what I expected from postcard images. The images, both art and photo, are entirely unfamiliar and, in my opinion amazing. Also, instead of concentrating on nursing itself, though there is a great amount of nuring history, most of it deals more with the articulation of nursing with society: entertainment, royalty, art styles of the age, social issues, war, and other items of pubic interest. There are Minnie Mouse nurses, Star Trek Nurses, cat nurses, famous nurses, glamor nurses and so forth.

Both are wonderful books, and both should be considered if you are looking for one gift to buy for yourself or a nurse. In fact, they complement each other and if you can afford it, I would recommend both. Both are far, far better than the
"100 Years of American Nursing: Celebrating A Century of Caring" or " Nursing Reflections" both of which, in my opinion, are way overpriced, and limited in scope.

What I like about this book that it gives you early history on bigfoot sightings and footprints in the Pacific N.West. I enjoyed reading the stories on the William Roe and Albert Ostman incidents which they both actually encountered with the Sasquatches in the early 1900s. For any one who wants to read books on Bigfoot. I highly recommend to buy this one. These creatures do actually live in the N.California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia Forests. Like finding a needle in a haystack except the needle (or needles) keeps moving and moving. Very clever creatures. Lenny's Gold Country Bigfoot Outpost (Private) Center, N.California

John Green first published "On the track of the Sasquatch" in the late 1960's. Two years later he published "The Year of the Sasquatch". Both books are out of print, but you can now get both books, (with current information, and updates) in "On the track of the Sasquatch". For many people intrested in the Sasquatch this is the first book that was available in the early 70's. It gives a "north west" perspective into the enigma of Bigfoot. Green has assembled all of the sightings and stories from the past - 1840's to 1973. As well as his personal involvment into being one of the first people to look at the Sasquatch as more than a mythical creature of native Indian culture. Green gives first hand acounts about the Willow Creek tracks, Tom Slick's Norhtwest Expedition, and Roger Patersons 1967 movie. A must read for any student of Sasquatch Studies.

Canadian newspaperman, John Green, beganing investigating reports of hairy, upright, apelike creatures in the late 1950's. This book was originally published in the late 1960's. Among the sightings discussed are some of the well-known, Sasquatch classics such as "The Albert Ostman story", "William Roe's sighting of a female Sasquatch on Mica Mountain in the 1950's" and other well known and lesser known sightings. Mr Green has personally investigated and interviewed witnesses in these cases and much more. This book provides a solid background of this subject from early sightings until the late 1960's. The Author worked with such well known investigators as Rene Dahinden, Bob Titmus, Dr Grover Krantz, and he also knew Roger Patterson. Mr Patterson's 1967 film of a reported female Sasquatch, in Bluff Creek, California is well known through out the world. This is also discussed in this book. This is a well written introduction to this subject by one the most reputable lay persons on this mystery. Readers are advised that Mr. Green has also written several other books on this subject subsquently, "The Year of the Sasquatch", "The Sasquatch File", and the encyclopedic, "Sasquatch, The Apes Among Us." This book is definetely one of the most important introductions to this subject, both for it's factual reporting and the amount of hands on investigation by the Author. It is a must own for anyone interested in this subject.

This is an excellent book which I would reccommend to any Christian who wants to develop a more meaningful prayer relationship with God. I've read numerous books on prayer, but this one far outshines any of the others. Concise and practical, it is also very understandable and readable for the average layman. If you want to learn how to greatly improve your prayer life, snatch this one up!

Opening to God is about just that, opening to God's will and his movements within the soul and in the world. It is a very practical guide to discernment. I have used it with high school students who sometimes found the vocabulary and some concepts beyond them, and it is not full of poetic glimpses of the Divine mystery. It is a well grounded and faith filled view of how the Christian can faithfully seek the will of God.

Nothing can prepare you for a Joe Coleman painting if you've never seen one before-- the beauty of these works will literally rip your eyeballs from your skull. With a scholarly, yet fierce courage Coleman reinvents the characters and scenes he portrays, with a technical skill which borders on the supernatural. In a recent show in Rotterdam, Coleman's work was hung beside those of Hieronymus Bosch, a deserved honor.

The essays in this book are excellent, describing Coleman's ground-breaking history as a performance artist as well as a painter. The design of the book by Katharine Gates is beautiful, and enhances appreciation of Coleman's work. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about art in the early 21st Century (or the 15th Century for that matter!).

Jaunie Sterling, going by her alias Dominique, was every man's dream. A woman that would make even the purest of the saints, fall to his knees. Due to her undeniable beauty, mistrustful women paid her to go undercover to test the faithfulness of their husbands and fiancés. Jaunie's advances always worked, that is until the day the devastatingly handsome Trenton Douglas turned her down. Once Trent found out his encounter with her was planned, nothing in Jaunie's life could compare to the tongue lashing she received from him. After what could be described as the ultimate humiliation, Jaunie decides to seek another form of employment. However, thoughts of Trent never strayed far from her mind.

After the horrifying ordeal, Trent packed his bags and left town. Now five years later, he returns to start a new life as partner in a contracting firm with his best friend. When his partner suggests he introduce himself to the occupants of the office across the hall, Trent is at a loss for words when he comes face to face with Dominique. Jaunie has a hard time convincing Trent that she has a reputable job and is no longer posing as Dominique. But what Trent has failed to divulge is his attraction to her since their first encounter, as the reason for his disbelief. When Jaunie's life is threatened, will Trent finally throw caution to the wind and learn to forgive and forget?

PRIVATE LIES is an awe-inspiring tale of two people destined to find happiness. Once again Robyn Amos has entertained readers with another excellent tale of romance and suspense. This novel was such a fast-paced enjoyable read that I did not want to see it end.

Sharon Green seems prone to long series, but this book was perfect. Gareth might not have been the most realistically done male, but Regan is next to Tamrissa, my favourite Green heroine. She is talented, realistic, and convincably vulnerable. But that's to be expected. This story is the perfect kind of sweet, not being mushy or sigh like but the kind of thing that just makes you put it down and say 'that's the best book I've ever read!'

Sacred Union The Healing Of God by intuitive counselor and spiritual teacher Beth Green is a profoundly spiritual treatise that challenges the commonly held notion that God is a perfect, changeless being. Instead, Sacred Union: The Healing Of God proposes an evolving, complex God that is the totality of all being. A dynamic, iconoclastic, thoughtful and thought-provoking work that seeks to reconcile the age-old dichotomy of a world filled with horrible evils and the worship of a holy supreme creator, Sacred Union: The Healing Of God is a transcendental work with a message that reaches past all boundaries within the mind and soul.

You haven't heard it all before. This work requires a few re-reads and probably several study times to make it yours, and even then... It makes me think and rethink and has caused a welcome reshaping of my belief system. Those of us who have grown up with the concept of a higher power have seldom given thought to our impact upon God or even broadening the way we define God. The fact that we are so disconnected from ourselves and others is a crippling condition of the human race. This book offers a way through.

SU:THOG is a practical theology based on observation, common sense and intuition for those of us who need to know "Why?". Beth logically explains the nature and purpose of existence with wit, wisdom, keen insight and compassion. The central tenet of the book - God is the totality of all, evolving - validates our individual experience and transcends it. Read this book for a new persepctive about relating to God and healing ourselves.

Review Date: 2002-05-07
Beth Green has taken the myth that God is perfect and turned it into the truth. If we are created in God's image then God has got problems, just like we do. Beth sets us free from needing the big God, little us relationship and brings God to level ground, beside us, where God belongs. This book is not religous as it allows the reader to beleive in, as many 12-step programs put it, "God as you understand God." It has freed me to have God at my side as my friend and companion, not somewhere in the sky, far away from me when I need it most and when it needs me. Sacred Union: The Healing of God has made me see that in healing myself, I heal God, the God within me, the God without and the whole that is God.

As a former Navy Corpsman, I found this book to be OUTSTANDING! Fully half of the book is devoted to the uniforms and equipment of Navy Medical personnel, and I agree with the earlier reviewer who felt that this should be reflected in the title. Other than that small beef, this is a great book, a welcome addition to Navy historical works, and I look forward to the rest of Mr. Warners' series.

Jeff Warner has written the most monumental, complete and historically accurate books on WWII Navy, Uniforms, Equipment and Gear on the market to date. It is clear that the author knows his subject matter and he knows it very, very well.

This book is rich with full color, high quality photographs, as well as original photographs direct from the National Archives. The subject matter flows easily from one topic to another. The author's descriptions are well written, clear and concise. Complete outfits and gear are shown, head to foot, showing how the gear goes together, how they were assembled and which items were used during what year, then paired with original photographs illustrating and documenting exactly by whom, where and when they were used.

It is obvious that the author embarked on a huge project and put an immense amount of research, hard work and dedication into this book. Since this is the first volume of a series, it is clear that the following volumes promise only more of the same quality, consistency and excellence.

Whether you are a veteran, collector, curator, historian, teacher, artist, scale model-maker, costumer, re-enactor or simply have a keen interest in the Navy during WWII, this book is a definite MUST HAVE.

Let me start by saying OUTSTANDING JOB SIR! This PHENOMENAL BOOK is festuned with a plethera of never before seen images and information!! This new book has everything! Any one who is interested in the US Navy in WWII should have this book on their bookshelf!

The photos are crisp and clear, the descriptions are great and the information is phenomenal!Mr. Warner took may of the photos outdoors, so you have a difficult time relizing that these are not actual war time color slides. his section pertaing to the sub force was amazing to say the least, the simple fact that he had an original black dyed set of the khakis in this book was mindblowing! And the fact that said uniform actually was on a model who was on an actual sub was incredible! Really loved this section. His gear layout are unmatched, as well as his use of wordage to describe the equipment.

Never before have I seen a reference book with so many original picture that havent been seen a 100 times before in other book, buy this book for the original pictures alone!

If anyone out there is hesitant to buy the book due to the rather high cover price, well then, said person might be called an imbecile! a really superb reference book, like this one,are hard to come by, as well as worth their weight in GOLD!!!This book is worth its weight in Platnum! Don't be a penny wise and a pound foolish, spend the money for this book, it's well worth the price! I would have paid twice this amount if asked by my book dealer!

I am looking forward to the other 4 volumes of the US Navy in WWII from Mr. Warner in eager anticipation, especially his chapter on Aircrew and pilot uniforms.
all my best,

A Good Book and Something Completely Different

Review Date: 2006-07-06
I just received my pre-ordered copy of this new book and I was very impressed with it. This is the first I've seen of any reference books about the U.S. Navy and it's quite good. Osprey does have a comic-book size volume called "The US Navy in WWII" but it's practically worthless.

Of course no book of this type is perfect but in my opinion, this book's faults are minor and are far outweighed by its merits. Here are the pluses and minuses that I discovered although your interpretation might be different.

These are the things I didn't like; the author used live people to model most of the uniforms for the photos. That's okay but it looks like there are only about 5 or 6 guys wearing about 30 different uniforms. It was a little disappointing to see the same few guys wearing so many different uniforms. However, to his credit, the author does apologize for this in the forward.

It looks as though the photo quality is not as crisp and clear as in other books of this type. I know some writers use slide film or new high tech digital imagery these days. The photos in this book just aren't eye-popping quality.

The title is a bit deceptive. About 80% of this book is devoted to Navy Corpsmen and USMC uniforms & field gear. Maybe the title should have included something about Navy Corpsmen.

The price is very high at $79.00 retail.

These are the things I did like; everything is in one volume. This isn't a book about one subject like helmets, knives or patches. Complete uniforms are shown and the subjects are thoroughly covered from A to Z.

This book is very informative, not just pics of WWII stuff. The author has shown step-by-step instructions for assembling packs and other equipment and the complete list of all the medical items carried in the navy corpsman bags is wonderful. Some experimental items and camouflage are shown as well. The official regulations are often quoted in the text for the wearing of insignia and uniforms which adds a lot of credibility to the author's work.

There are a few recent USMC uniform books already in print that feature similar items. Namely, "Grunt Gear" by Alec Tulkoff, "Paramarine" by Chris Mason and "USMC Uniforms, Insignia and Personal Items of WWII" by Harlan Glenn. I have all of these books and I found very little repetition in "Sailors in Forest Green". Notably, the other books devote little or no attention to dress uniforms which is covered very well in this book. Also, none of the other books give little more than a passing honorable mention to corpsmen. The original combat photos of navy corpsmen and the layouts of the gear they used are also covered here in detail. In my opinion, if you have other USMC reference books, this one will compliment them, not rehash the same material.

With all of the overkill of books out there on U.S. paratrooper gear and German SS camouflage, I'm glad that someone has finally taken on the job of writing a series of serious reference books about the U.S. Navy in WWII. After seeing this first book in the series, I'm really looking forward to the rest of them. All things considered, I give it 5 stars.

Although I am not an expert, I am a scholar, and I found this book of poems by Sappho who lived in 700 BC Greece a pleasure to read. I liked the design and layout, and the translation is geared to today's readers.

Elegant in its simplicity

This polished translation brilliantly reflects those spare but sparkling lines from the winsome poet of a lonely isle and heart. I find it still superb after many readings. Highly recommended.

"To Eros: You crush me." The tenderness and splendor of Sappho's poetry has never been so lusciously rendered as in this translation. Every little word sings with love and warmth. Thank you, Willis Barnstone, for omitting the cumbersone ellipses and brackets of translations past. Now we can enjoy Sappho's passion undisturbed.

A translation.

More or less 150 years after Homer's Iliad, Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos west off the coast what is present Turkey. (Due to political upheavel she went two times in exile, the second time to Sicily for a short time ).

Sappho takes a special place among the poets of Antiquity. She was already famous in her own time. Plato said that she was the tenth Muse and someone called her poetry " as refreshing as a morning breeze ". Her poems are vivid and she needs only a few words to describe essential human feelings. She calls solitude for instance " this icy numbness of being alone ".
( Nice to know: from Sappho's poems remain about 500 lines. All Tragedies by Aeschylus have a total of 8144 lines. Conclusion: What's left of Sappho's poems is next to nothing. )

" Wedding of Andromache " is one of the most vivid descriptions in the poetry of Antiquity. It gives an almost journalistic account of the homecoming of Hector and Andromache. A fragment of Barnstone's translation:
" ...
and all set out for Troy
in a confusion of sweet-voiced flutes, citharas,
and small crashing cymbals
and young girls sang a loud heavenly song
..."

Sappho excels also in describing landscapes and nature ( something you don't find often in Ancient literature ). A fragment of " Aphrodite of the flowers ",
"...
Here ice water babbles through the apple branches
and roses leave shadow on the ground
..."

This translation was published in 1998 but as a work of art in itself, it's by no means outdated.
