This book should be twinned with all of the earlier works of Tom Sharpe, since it obviously owes its inspiration to Sharpe's peculiar and bitingly satyrical view of the world. As a life-long lover of Tom Sharpe, I was deeply saddened to find his latest Wilt in Nowhere raised not a smile on my face. Is something wrong with me? I thought I had gone off. But then, thanks to a review in Amazon, I picked up on Red Fox Goose Green, and subsequently its sequel Red Flag Blue Member, and I was once again into the madly inverted world where good folks go to church, then go to the pub, then go to kill a few foxes. Full of good naked sex, Fox's farce can certainly not be called subtle. Vulgar? Yes I suppose so, but a clever vulgarity -- like a really good joke written on a toilet wall. I think that if you are living in the gutter, this book will turn you face up, so you can see the stars. Thank God we have a new King of the absurd to put the world to rights by turning it upside down.

I could not stop laughing, even after I finished this book. Imagery stays in the mind. Beautifully crafted excentric characters bordering on the bizarre, and sometimes going over the border into a world that is seriously funny. There is a serious side to this book, but only if you choose to look for it. The hunters become the hunted and just about everything in an English village is inverted, making it more real by its dream-like quality. Very well written. Can't wait for the sequel.

As a manic depressive, I found this book a great tonic. Almost everybody in it is wierder than me. Mike Hunt, the ex-wrestler, banned because he could not remember the wrestling scripts, turned publican and maintenance man, with the wonderful logo on his van "If you want an odd job done, look up Mike Hunt". You have to really read this book or you pass over wonderful word play like that one. The characters are deliberately much larger than life. The retired gurka Colonel, "impeccably trained to kill quietly or noisily, to climb, to ski, to snorkel, to ride -- to do all of these at once while moving like the wind against the Queen's enemies, and living on a grain of rice a day...." The country vicar with a taste for very young girls and an almost balancing fear of God. Rita, the world's first Mistress of Hounds. The hundred-year old transvestite. Datardly Danny Dynamo. Cossack the canine defender. The Drip family. The village constable who seems to be the only sane personality -- and pays for it. The absconding wife of the Old Lord and her black "Rhodesian" lover. Hunchback Whistling Bob, so named because he whistles up foxes, bisexual lover of Rodg, who doesn't seem to know if he is really a she. The cast is huge and constantly entertaining in a sort of Canterbury Tales way. Almost by accident, characters find themselves locked in fellatio, pokers find their way up bums and everybody ends up naked in a battle royal. One of my favourite scenes is when the Quixotic Colonel tries to save the Vicar's wife, tied up and gagged in voluntary sado-masochism. I have never read a book quite like this one. Can't wait for the next one.

For many years there were villages in England where they got away with 'blue murder'. Never mind the mucky stuff to do with dog gets fox, or vice versa, which is of course the main plot of this book.

There was other behaviour going on that some might be ashamed of although to some of us it's very funny.... in a twisted sort of way.

What perplexes me is that the author is suppose to be based in Asia, yet has this finite knowledge of the foibles of English village life and the sort of pervs that thrive there.

I wonder if the true identity of the author is that of a retired or disgraced Tory MP, who would now be better suited to running a whore house in Bankgok. I wonder. It's a breezy fun read and makes a change from the usual boring stuff that gets onto the bookshelves of WH Smiths.

This book should be banned or awarded the Booker Prize for humour. Very adult humour. Amazon obviously made a mistake in putting this in the kids section. I would NOT allow my 14 year old daughter to read it (until she is 16, then I'd give it to her as a birthday present). Thank god we have another Tom Sharpe. Can't wait for the next one. Very British, vulgarly delicious in every way.

Some women might want to call "The Red Green Show" chauvinist because there's nothng but men on it. Have you ever noticed that? Actually, I can remember one episode that had a beautiful model pretending to be Bernice, Red's never-seen wife. But that was the one and only woman I have ever seen on the show. I said women COULD call it chauvinist, but if they watched it, they SHOULDN'T. It's a show that does nothing but make fun of men. And it is funny.

This book takes some of the best material from the show and kind of throws it together. You'll meet pretty much all of the Possum Lodge members; a wierd collection of some of the goofiest regular guys you'll ever meet. I'm a particular fan of Buzz Sherwood who alledgedly can fly his airplane around Possum Lake, but when you're that stoned all the time, how do you do it? You might be glad to learn O.L.D.M.A.N. Sedgwick's full name.

If you're a regular viewer of the TV show, then you don't need me to tell you to buy this book. If you haven't seen the show, find it somewhere on you local PBS station, or gripe to the station for not carrying it and get one of the videos. Then, maybe you'll appreciate this book and maybe you'll buy it, or something.

This book is all of the hilariousness of The Red Green Show laid out in book format. There's Red giving advice to middle age guys, Harold's advice to teens, Red's songs, Harold's for-sale and other announcements, and so forth. I recognized some of these from the show, but by no means all. (Then again, I have not been lucky enough to see every episode.) Then, there's piles of information on Possum Lodge: the pledge, the charter, the rules (yes, they have some), Lodge merit badges, a history of Possum Lake, the transcript of a Lodge meeting (complete with Old Man Sedgwick, Stinky Peterson, Moose Thompson, et al.), a Meet Your Member bio of many member, [pant, pant, pant] and so much more!

This book is great. As soon as I got it I immediately started reading it out loud to my wife (her gardening book couldn't possibly have been as good as this one!). Don't be fooled, the jokes start right at the beginning of the book (if you can find it). This is a great book, a must-have for all Red Green Fans. Hurry up and buy it!

Nobody should be without this book! It is a real piece of humour in writing!!! Great as a gift idea for anyone!!!

If you love the show you'll love this book!

I bought this book for my husband, because he loves the show. He has had to fight me to get hold of it to read. It is a must buy!

My three year old loves this book. From the pictures, to the words, to the page manipulations, it's one of his favorite. He hasn't really been into reading and this is the one that finally got him sitting and interested. For a while he walked around the house screaming "Red stop, Green go!" at the top of his lungs.

At first I was hesitant to buy anything with a flap or wheel. He has destroyed most every other book that had "quirks," and books with pages that don't do anything too. However, after receiving this for Christmas, it has survived without a single tear and he has become interested in other books.

Hopefully his book destroying days are over.

My son loves "Go Dog, Go". We purchased "Red, Stop! Green, Go!" book for a plane ride, and it gave us 30 minutes of great entertainment. He loves the book, and the interactive wheels are just the right size for 2-year old. Excellent compliment to the book "Go Dog, Go".

My 2-year-old loves this book. She is able to manipulate all the moving parts without ripping them out of the book. As a big 'Go Dog Go' fan, she also enjoys seeing the familiar characters and being able to make the dogs drive around in cars and jump in the water.

My 2y-8m old daughter simply adores this book, and we have great fun reading it together. It has been lovingly read to pieces, and it's time for a new one. This book is, hands down, one of her top-notch favorites! When I read to my daughter, I become quite animated; well, this book, by it's very design, invites us to be as silly as we can, because we are in for a jolly good time!

My 4 year old son loves this book. He has some speech delays and this book really got him talking! The interactive aspect of it is great. On one page the dogs jump off the board and goes under "water" which is like blue cellophane. So the white dog turns blue under water, the pink one turns purple, etc. The hat theme from the "Go, Dog, Go" book is also cute. There is a page where you turn the wheel and the dog's hat changes color. This book would help teach colors. Great book!

This book is wonderfully illustrated. Lynne Cherry's style is to put a large picture on
each page surrounded by smaller pictures all relating to the subject. In this book the
subject is the course of a river over time and the effects of humanity on its health.
The side pictures relate to the people and their lifestyle at the time. The text gives
relatively simple explanations of what is occurring on the page.

Ages 10+
Follows the life of a river from Native American time through present and details the story of human destruction of a river and the human renewal of the resource. Definitely a read for grades 5+ due to the "urgency" of environmental destruction*we don't want to scare the kids to help them appreciate the resource*

This book was given to me at age 12. I am now 17 and it is still my favorite. I will never outgrow the beautiful pictures, or the very important lesson it teaches. Every page is expertly laid out, with exquisite paintings depicting the river and the era being discussed. The message of environmental conservation and protection is inspiring. Lynne Cherry makes this vital part of our existence understandable to young children, and even adults, often the harder group to reach. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wants their children to appreciate the world around them and learn that they can, and should, do their best to save it.

This is a beautiful book! The illustrations are breathtaking and it follows an almost "illuminated" type of text structure, similar to that found in "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. Each page is bordered by illustrations of items pertaining to the period in history that the page is depicting - the implements used by Native peoples, animals that live by the river, inventions of the Industrial Revolution, etc. There is much more to talk about on each page than just the environmental theme of the book. This book would fit well in units about Native people, progress/inventions, ecology, water habitats, etc. A must-have for classrooms, homes, and teachers

I used this book with my third grade class when they were studying the effects of water pollution on a large body of water. They had already studied Native Americans in second grade and this book just blended the two subjects together. The step by step portrayal of man's harm to the Nashua River helped my children learn about how they were harming the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Lynne Cherry is a fantastic author and presents two great subjects that are highly interesting to children. Any teacher that teaches either Native Americans or water pollution should include this book in their lessons!

Hallberg's first novel is a fascinating account of the trials and tribulations of a rookie PGA Tour golfer told with flashbacks in alternating chapters to give some context to his current incarceration for trying to run over his best friend and fellow golf pro. Shades of Carl Hiassen. The prison farm where he ends up has what was once a 2-hole golf course and our hero, with much initial reluctance, brings it back to life over the course of his sentence - bringing himself back to life and golf at the same time. When he finally decides to play the restored course with a fellow con as his caddie, we know he's rediscovered more than just his swing. A good read that delivers all the elements - interesing story, characters you care about and some unique insights into what golf does for the psyche. Highly recommended.

I've read this book several times and still find new details each time. The author is brilliant in his format of two story lines...it truly keeps the reader hooked. William Hallberg provides wonder images and is obviously both very passionate about his writing and his golf game.

I read this book several years ago and have been trying to find a copy ever since. Even wrote the author, William Hallberg. I am so please it is being republished.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book. It is the story of a true golf lover who struggles through life, culminating in a brief stop on the pro tour. It is told in 2 separate narratives, each composed of 18 chapters, and culminates in a bittersweet, realistic ending. Original.

The dual story lines and time frames keeps the reader interested. This is a keeper for any golfer, especially father-son combos. The main character's love for the greatest game was portrayed brilliantly no mater what life offered him.

This is a wonderfully written and sincere account of a young woman's spiritual journey with a remarkable teacher, Rudi. Inspiring, and heartfelt, with a clear writing style. Well done!

Rudi and The Green Apple is a must-read for anyone truly interested in using the teachings of yoga for spiritual growth. While the stories it shares are told in an easy, conversational style, what it transmits is profound. The book itself helps us gaze into the life of an incredible yogi and partake of some of his depth and power through the eyes of a young student. This kind of guru-disciple relationship is not common in our society but as this book reveals, it can give us the tools for transformation so many of us seek. This is a book I will return to many times as I try to understand in my own life how the spiritual path of yoga truly works.

This beautiful book gives the reader a taste of the special relationship that exsists between a guru and disciple. In this heart touching story Faith paints a vivid picture of her teacher, Rudi. His personality, teachings, and enthusiastic love for people is clearly conveyed for the reader. It is easy to feel a great affection for this man too!

Faith tells the story of how this special person came into her life and tranformed her world, and her view herself. There are really nice pictures and illustrations as well as a recipe that adds nicely to the book. A wonderful, inspiring story!

This book inspired me to dig deeper into my own soul. I laughed, I cried, my heart broke open as I read. She writes honestly, simply, and with depth about her experiences while studying with him and about how she has applied what she learned to her own life. This is not a meditation manual. Beautiful layout and illustrations harmonize perfectly with the text.

It is a rare privilege to read this beautifully designed and sweetly written book about the even more rare privilege of being the student of a Siddah Yogi in the U.S. Author Faith Stone writes from her heart about her almost unbelievable experiences as the student of Swami Rudrananda. In the process she manages to convey a good overview and very down-to-earth explanation of Rudi's teachings. The book is filled with love, spiritual wisdom and beautiful art work. A very moving book--not to be missed by spiritual seekers! It is truly a precious gift.

Run to Daylight was published in 1963 and was instantly recognized as a classic. Written by legendary Green Bay Packer head coach Vince Lombardi, RTD details Lombardi and the Packers preparation for an unnammed opponnet in the 1962 championship season. The book is a must read for the aspiring coach or anyone interested in pro football coaching. RTD provides the psychological motivation of both the players and coaches and a highly readable account of a week in a pro football season. Along with John Wooden's "They Call Me Coach", this is a must read for coaches of any sport.

In this book Lombardi's life is played out during a week as the patriarch of the Packers. He highlights in detail why they were a 60's dynasty. From the cycles of game planning, interactions with his team, you get to see Packer football from a new perspective. Despite his gruff exterior, it is crystal clear that he genuinely cared about his players on and off the field. This is not a how to coaching book or a biography. It is a slide snapshot that tells more than the reader expects.

Such a rare gem of a book, I was floored by it's great detail and was very happy with this book!! This 1963 publication written by Vince Lombardi, is sure to be missed by much of today's generation, and unfortunately so. Lombardi SHOWS why his Packers were the 60's greatest football dynasty, and how his life plays out during a week as the leader of the Packers. This is an absolute MUST read by ANY real football fan!!!

Vince Lombardi's dedication and devotion transcended football. His quotes are used all the way from the high school locker room to the corporate board room.

This diary is Lombardi in his own words. It covers his views of the weekly cycle of planning for battle, preparing for battle, and then the football game itself.

Packer fan or motivational fan - this book is an easy read worth the several hours to get cover to cover.

This book is mandatory reading for football fans, particularly fan of the Green Bay Packers. Some of the ideas about this book are misleading. However, it is still a great read.

This book is not a biography of Lombardi or a guide on how to coach football. This book does give readers insight as to what it was like for Lombardi during his coaching tenure. Based on technology alone, there are great differences now. The readers get to see all of Lombardi's preparation for the mystery opponent in silver uniforms.

Several of Lombardi's famous quotes are included. Lombardi also discusses specifc intereactions with players as well as a number of interesting stories about various players. Despite his tough exterior, he genuinely cares about his players. When the book arrives at game day, you get to see the game form Lombardi's perspective. It is a real treat for football fans.

If you have read other books about the Packers during this era, you are not likley to learn many new facts. Many of the facts in here are credited as a primary source in other books. However, you do get to see Packer football from a new perspective.

Surreal romance, Philately, amazingly beautiful postcards and a page turner. This is a beautiful gift for your self or someone else. I have all books and the post-cards. Sorry the series ended

Griffin and Sabine are located on opposite ends of the earth -- Griffin is a lonely artist in England, while Sabine is a mysterious native of the elusive Sicmon Island chain in the South Pacific. Somehow, these two unique souls manage to find one another via a postal correspondence, and it is this correspondence back and forth which comprises the Griffin and Sabine books. Griffin and Sabine come to realize very quickly that their lives are inextricably bound up with one another, and that their coming together, face to face, is of utmost importance, not only for their own sanity, but possibly for the fate of the very world. Unfortunately, meeting face to face is more difficult than each of them could ever have imagined, and their quest to reach out to one another in a world of smoke and mirrors forms the backbone of these books.

I have loved these books since I first read them several years ago, and I keep coming back to them and rereading them over and over. They are truly able to transport you from Sabines sun-drenched paradaisical island home, to Griffin's rain-soaked isolation, and into other realms that are far less easy to describe. Excellently wrought and wonderfully creative, I encourage anyone with an imagination to read this trilogy: "Griffin and Sabine," "Sabine's Notebook," and finally, "The Golden Mean."

Words can not describe what Nick Bantcock has combined with pictures and postcards. He actually pulls you in as you must open envelopes to read the ongoing correspondence. Buy a bottle of wine, build a fire and join your significant other for a journey that will not leave you disapointed.

Reading this book is an exciting experience to read correspondence between two people who seem to touch ones life. Reading this truly does make one want to revifve the lost are of the letter. I can't wait toread the next one in the series.

SABINE'S NOTEBOOK is the second volume of Nick Bantock's trilogy that begins with GRIFFIN AND SABINE and ends with THE GOLDEN MEAN. It continues the correspondence between London artist Griffin Moss and South Seas incubus Sabine Strohem. It's a visually tantalizing book, containing actual envelopes glued to the pages with actual letters inside that can be taken out and read.

By the beginning of SABINE'S NOTEBOOK it has become clear that Sabine is merely a creation of Griffin's imagination. Griffin has received Sabine's notice that she is coming to London (on a card with no stamps...) but afraid of meeting his own hallucination he flees to Ireland, beginning a trip that will take him around the world. The notebook of the title is Sabine's record of Griffin's correspondence as she waits in his house in London awaiting his return. The connection of the story to W.B. Yeat's poem "The Second Coming" becomes much more tangible and a direct quote from the poem brings this volume of the trilogy to a finish.

Like the first book, SABINE'S NOTEBOOK is second-rate literature. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting novelty that is worth reading even though it's really Bantock's amazing images that matter. Considering that one can read the entire trilogy in about half an hour, these books aren't an undue demand on one's time. I tend to believe a young-adult audience would appreciate this books best, as I read the trilogy when I was a teenager and found them much more captivating then I did on a recent rereading.

First and Last stop for WW II U.S. Army Air Force uniform information !

Only book of its kind I could find. Referred to me by a true expert in WW2 Army Air Corp flight ware, patches and pins. I found it not only complete, factual and full of information but very personal at times;

For collectors of WWII wings and related insignia, this is an outstanding reference guide. Normally, reference books on wings contain errors relating to the wings period of manufacture, however the author is on the mark each time. The photographs are excellent, including a short section on hallmarks. Highly recommended!!

This is the best reference book that I have found so far for identification and history of USAF wings. A book like this pays for itself the first time you use it as a buyer, seller, or collector.

I am 2LT Jesse Irwin Carnes [USAF-CAP, 16010th Composite Squadron]. I REALLY recommend this book by Jon Maguire, i.e., "Silver Wings, Pinks and Greens." Anyone who is SERIOUS about collecting WWII militaria, especially uniforms, pilot's wings, etc., then THIS book is SINE QUA NON ... it is indispensable.

So, how is it SO indispensable? It helps you know WHAT to look for when you collect militaria from this genre. It helps you to develop an "eye" for what is correct in authentic items.

Secondly, Jon Maguire's descriptions enable you to KNOW what WIEGHT or colour or texture a GENUINE article should be.

Any suggestions for a "Revised" edition by Maguire? He might want to add a 1-2 page writeup on the "Best-of-the-best" militaria items, such as A-2 flight jackets by "RoughWear" [no longer in business] or uniforms [and especially officer's visor service caps] by the inimitable "Luxenberg" [also no longer in business] and so forth.

Secondly, sometimes his foto light was a shade deviant, so that the reddish-russet officer's officer's shoes looked more tan-brown. How do I know? I own an "NOS" [new old stock] pair of UNissued officer's low quarters. They are a burnt-orange reddish-brown, like some of the early war visor service caps.

I also own a full set of officer's PINKS, and under flourescent light, they look mauve/pink. His fotos looked more khaki.

But this can be improved in time. Nonetheless, this book rates 5 stars for EFFORT and for its overall USEFULLness.

Clearly a labor of love, this book covers in detail the history of the singing cowboy in popular music -- and the American imagination. Mini-bios of dozens and dozens of not-so-well-known singers and Western musical groups, in more or less chronological order, stand beside fuller explorations of the work of the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Tex Ritter. Green also puts the singing cowboy phenomenon into cultural context and delineates the shift from ranch-hand songs, to romantic paens about the West itself, to the current mini-renaissance. This is no hard-eyed social history, but an affectionate valentine. My only complaint: Out of humility or whatever, Green gives himself and fellow members of Riders in the Sky relatively little credit for the resurgence of interest in Western music. So let me add a footnote: For many of us out here, Riders in the Sky reawakened long-buried childhood dreams of tumbling tumbleweeds and blue shadows on the trail, making awesome music and contributing some classic songs to the canon themselves. For that -- and this excellent book -- thanks!

This is a most informative book...with enough information to keep the truly serious Western Music researcher happy, while not "drowning" the average leisure reader with "monotonous" facts.

Douglass B. Green (aka: Ranger Doug, "idol of American youth") is a very important figure in the preservation of Western Music History. His book is strong enough to be used as a college text, yet engrossing enough to keep most reading to the very end.

This is a most enjoyable book.

Singing In The Saddle: The History Of The Singing Cowboy by music historian and performer Douglas B. Green is an engaging and impressively informative presentation of the history of western music, films, and performers of America, both before and after World War II. Black-and-white photographs enhance this avidly detailed and lovingly written survey of an aspect of American Popular culture. Douglas B. Green ("Ranger Doug" from the Grammy Award-wining group Riders in the Sky) is to be commended for his expertise, his ability to write for the non-specialist general reader, and his ability to acquire anecdotal stories and recollections by some of the most experienced and influential members of the "singing cowboy" community.

"Singing in the Saddle" is a very nice book with a slightly different angle to to it's counterparts. There is information in this book that I have not found in other books about the singing cowboys. All in all the book is very well worth it's money for what it offers. What I do find disappointing however is the fact that the book does not quite live up to it's title.For example the book covers a lot of information about artistes who had nothing to do with 'singing in a saddle', such as radio and stage singers only, a good many of whom either died a long time ago and/or I have never heard of.

Personally, I would have liked the book to have covered only the movie singing cowboys, not enough was said about some of them, apart of course from Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Tex Ritter.

As a book that deals with the history of country and western music and the performers of such, then you are getting good value for money.

Green's Singing in the Saddle provides an articulate wide-ranging history of the Singing Cowboy from its origins in western folk culture to the triumph of the B Westerns. He draws strong portraits of both primary stars and lesser known actors who contributed to the genre. An excellent introduction and a must for country music collections.
