We started reading Duncan's War by Douglas Bond together as a family sometime during the fall. We became so excited about the story that we had to put the children under strict orders not to touch the book during the day, but they had to wait until family reading hour. "No Peeking!" was the command they would hear when their hand would reach slyly for the book on the end table.

Duncan's War is followed by The King's Arrow and then finally Rebel's Keep. This series, called the Crown and Covenant, follows the lives of the M'Kethe family during 17th Century Scotland as they endured brutal persecution at the hand of King James and King Charles. Those that remained loyal to King Jesus called themselves the Scottish Covenanters. This is the story of those who must wrestle with honoring God and applying His word while living amidst a government that is trying to obliterate Christianity.

As a reader, I was particularly struck with what I would do if I were in this situation with my own family. While reading these stories, I had to grapple with the scriptures as I put myself in their shoes. As a father and a Christian, I want to honor God and obey His word above all else. And yet I desire desperately to protect my children from all outside harm. In the story, the children watch their father's actions as he attempts to obey King Jesus above all others, and while they do not fully understand them at the time, they come to appreciate them more fully later as they grow and mature. The father never compromises his integrity in the midst of war. He clearly keeps the perspective that this life on earth is not the only one we live for. There is one to come. How we live and die here will show Whom it is we honor. This is how I want to live. I want to set a strong example for my children as I live out God's word even during difficult times. While reading these stories, I was struck once again that how we live in this life has implications in the next. We are to live for the Audience of One.

Inspiring Scottish heroes, cruel English villains, a courageous uprising, and a secret tunnel will draw readers of all ages into this engaging story. We first meet an immature fourteen-year-old Duncan M'Kethe as he is, in his father Sandy's terms, "playacting" rather than watching their sheep. However, increasing oppression of Presbyterian families like Duncan's forces peace-loving Sandy M'Kethe, along with his son, into a bloody conflict that ends in disaster. Duncan must grow up quickly as he sees the price others have paid for their devotion to the Covenant and Jesus, the only true Head of the Church. And in the end he must take an extreme risk to keep his father from paying that same price. Infused with historical fact, "Duncan's War" makes us believe, for a short time, that we are truly in early Scotland. And it accurately depicts the struggles our predecessors faced to follow Christ.

When I first got Duncan's War, I had no idea about what to expect. It turned out to be a breath of fresh air from the vast inflow of objectionable fiction that is usually sold today. In less than a week I had read it from cover to cover. Along with a fast-paced, excellent plot, this book offers a very Christian worldview, shows clearly the differences between good and evil, and shows how hard it is to obey the Biblical command of loving your enemies. It makes us keenly aware that Christians in the United States today have it easy compared to the fierce persecutions the devout Scots endured and encourages all Christians to stay in the battle.

I bought this for my Scottish history enthusiast child, but after reading them myself, it turned into a must read to the whole family of eight, including Dad. Since then, we have purchsed every Douglas Bond book we can acquire. This is a time of Scotland and Scottish Covenanters that I have found few people are familiar with. It is an important addition to a study of the American Revolution in that so many Scottish Covenanters fought in that in Europe it is also referred to as the Presbyterian Rebellion. Mr. Bond also lines out for the reader at the end which characters are documented nonfiction, and which are not, what of the story is fiction, and what is clearly not, and how he changed them. A very valuable addition to our large family library, and to the education of our children. It also shares principles and values that we very much want to instill in our 6 children.

These are great books!!!!!! There's three in this series, DUNCANS WAR, KINGS ARROW, AND REBELS KEEP. I read them all in six days,and altogether there are over seven hundred pages. This one's about duncan M'Kethe who helps the covenanters fight the cruel British soldiers. When they capture the British Dragoons leader, what will they do with him? Some say shoot him... You'll have to read it yourself to find out. I highly reccomend these books, and if anyone gives them less than five stars, they surprise me a whole lot.

Anyone involved in city planning or anyone that lives in a city should read this. Power of Proximity!

The most amazing book I have ever read...life-altering look at evolutionary coexistence. There is hope for our future...with others understanding and implementing ecocity principles. Please - I challenge you to read and use the book...our way of being depends on it.

Here is an ambitious remit. Register gives a history of the development of cities. And he offers suggestions for what he calls eco-modern designs. That attempt to minimise energy consumption and maximise biodiversity. The former is an obvious laudable aim for any city and its occupants. Rising energy costs, due in part to ever increasing global industrialisation, can adversely affect everyone in a city. Reducing consumption is shown to involve such trends as more energy efficient cars.

But he also advocates a greater biodiversity within cities. More gardens, including on rooftops. Multiple benefits are offered. A more pleasant recreational environment. And reduced cooling costs for buildings.

Register offers a light leftist approach. He does not seem anticapitalist, unlike some radical environmentalists.

EcoCities is a book I have returned to repeatedly and discovered new insights every time. Register is no utopian dreamer; he's addressing real problems in contemporary urban design and land use patterns that cannot be sustained in a lower-energy future. Register's personality comes through loud and clear in his writing--this is no dry treatment of the subject.

Through this book, Register helps us to envision with some specificity what urban landscapes light on automobiles but rich in biodiversity could look like. It's as if he's illustrating a series of before and after treatments of various spaces, but the before picture is now and the after is a future yet to be realized. Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to help actively design their built environment towards sustainability.

Along with books like Natural Capitalism and Cradle to Cradle, Ecocities takes its place among the most important environmental tomes of our day. In a nutshell, Richard Register's vision (replete with a plan to get us there) could transform our world. In fact a structural response like ecocities (and smart growth) may be the best tools available to bring us to our only destination, sustainability. In his thoughtful book, Register waxes poetic on the environmental crisis we face, shares a grand vision for addressing the crisis -- while simultaneously improving our everyday lives -- and wraps it up with a road map for getting there. His many illustrations spark the imagination and are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. If you haven't read it, just do. Buy this important book now.

Great introduction to eco-villages and what they are all about. Love the pictures.

I have never heard of ecovillages before and it seems to be the perfect idea. The book consists of articles about and by different people about different ecovillages around the globe. I am fascinated how many aspects there are to ecological cultural and social living. There is lot of pictures of "green" houses and maps of some villages, also there is emailadresses and a lot of recources. I just started reading but I know that this is definitly the most important book I found in a long, long time.

I had to do a paper for university on Ecovillages. What a blessing when i found this book at the library! It's just perfekt, I wanted to translate everything and not change a word.
It gives a good overvieuw of the movement and shows examples of ecovillages around the world. There are also some interviews whith key people!
GREAT GREAT stuff.
It made me want to take a plane and go and live in one of those places right away... I'm seriously considering it!

This book has the same potential for impacting global society as Bill Mollison's seminal work, "Permaculture: A Designers' Manual"! In fact, "Ecovillage Living" adds the human dimension to permaculture. As permaculture was a new word and espoused an alternative harmonious world view, based on a natural order and relatedness, "Ecovillage" has now been retrieved from the banality of contemporary "Green" suburban marketing slogans. An acceptable standard for "Ecovillage" has now been defined in all of it's wonderful, practical, complexity. "Ecovillage Living" comes from the source, Hildur Jackson, one of the founders of the Ecovillage Movement.

Like a well cut diamond, "Ecovillage Living's" beauty is multi-faceted. It could be a textbook for the wealth of data, practical real life examples, and additional resources presented. The remarkable compilation of photographs and renderings,takes the reader to many of the 15,000 sites and into the hearts and minds of the movement. This visual variety and global context easily translates into a coffee table icon, that could stimulate dreams into action. In a more personal vein it could be seen as a personal diary/contemporary record of an increasing number of people on six continents that sense their need to reconnect with the planet and each other. It's a diary/record of their dreams manifested, and invites others to join them!

As former President of Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity,Inc., a "Green" builder and developer, and an aspiring Ecovillage occupant, it's a pleasure to give "Ecovillage Living" my highest recommendation.

Finally, it has arrived. I've been waiting for this book for a long time. As an environmental philosopher, I have come to believe that ecovillages (or urban villages - the Global Ecovillage Network doesn't distinguish) are our only hope for survival on this planet. And this is the best book available on the subject.

A quick glance at modern society shows many signs of cultural and economic stress: including war, militarization, gun violence, media violence, over-consumption of resources, overpopulation, failing democracy, money in politics, monopolization, sexual inequality, racism, inadequate health care, rising crime rates, advertisement glut, commercialized education, materialism, community fragmentation, work-related stress, mass layoffs, poverty, and a mass sense of alienation - from self, other and nature.

Signs of biological stress in the natural world are even more daunting. Fisheries are collapsing, forests are shrinking, rangelands are deteriorating, soils are eroding, species are disappearing, global temperatures are rising, rivers are draining dry, water tables are falling, the ozone layer is depleting, more destructive storms are brewing, the polar ice caps are melting and sea level is rising (see ECO-ECONOMY for details on the eco-crisis). It is in this context that Chris Bright's warning rings ominous: "Nature has no reset buttons."

Trapped in the confines of global economic corporatism, we must ask, Could it be that the fundamental design of society is flawed? Are large nation-states and even larger corporations conducive to ecological and cultural health? How about wage labor and the monetary system in general? How do we go about creating unique and beautiful communities without inequality, hunger, insecurity, want - and without killing the planet? In a word, how can we live the Good Life? Is it possible?

The answer to all of these problems is the same, and you will find them in this book. Ecovillages are the answer! In this book you can expect to find a great collection of photographs, wonderful charts and graphs, maps, people profiles, design layouts, philosophical perspectives and the historical background of the ecovillage movement. There is no better book on the subject, and no more important subject for the new millennium. How else will homo sapiens reach homeostasis on this planet? These books are very thorough. They take you through all the processes you need to get your garden started, and they provide many perennial garden design methods. There are plenty of charts and graphs in each book which help tremendously with making complete sense of the material.

The second volume is about double the size of Volume One. My only real issue with this set is that Volume One is in color and Volume Two is black and white. Is this a big deal? Not really. Though, if I had the option of paying ten dollars to swap out Volume Two in black and white for a color version, I would.

As a graduate of a Permaculture Design Course, organic farm worker and someone generally interested in virtually all aspect of sustainable ag, I found this book incredible. Now, I've only read the first one (about to start on volume number 2), but the quality of information in the first volume in outstanding. Volume 1 is concerned with the theory behind forest gardening, but with a keen eye towards using that information in the second volume (which includes detailed information on actually creating a forest garden). David Jacke does a great job of covering everything from invasive plants to forest succession to what a guild is and how to build one to underground microbes and why we should care about them. Full of informative figures, graphs and sidebars, this book does an excellent job of filling a niche that has been otherwise missed by many permaculture and sustainable ag books - what to do in the more temperate, rainy parts of the world. I'd recommend this book over Patrick Whitfield's great book if you live in the U.S. because it suggests a variety of plants native to the U.S. and has a larger number of useful species for people who live in the U.S. and are dealing with colder temperatures than those seen in Britain. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in creating an edible landscape on a piece of property.

If you are a home gardener who has ever stopped to wonder whether permaculture was useful to you, you need to read these books. If you are an intermediate to advanced permaculturist, you will revel in these books. If you want to understand how a single individual with a garden can make the world a better place, you need to read these books.

Jacke and Toensmeier lay out an incredible vision in Volume I for the potential that permaculture holds for gardeners in the northern US. And they lead the reader through an eye-opening education in the scientific theory which supports that vision. In Volume II, they walk the reader through the process of creating their own unique vision for the reader's own permaculture design. Then they lay out, step by step, how to progress from vision to reality.

Along the way, they range from the theoretical to the highly practical, from how many miles of fungal strands are in a teaspoon of soil from the forest floor, to exactly how to plant a tree so that it not only survives but thrives. And they do it in a voice which is both learned and whimsical, enthusiastic and serious -- and downright fun.

I'm buying a second set of these books. I need to keep one set with me as I build my garden; I learn new things every time I turn the page, knowledge I need on a "how to" level. But I need a second set, so that I can lend it to my friends who would get tremendous insight from reading these books...my order for my second set is going in today!

It's really amazing how much information the authors have compiled on the subject matter they cover. Which, by the way, has to to with creating forest gardens, but with so much more as well, and in incredible depth.
These two books can provide one with material to study for a long time and be a reference source forever.

I flunked algebra in high school. Now I'm taking a 095 algebra class at a local collage and now I'm getting A's and B's. It's a great book and ours came packaged with lecture CDs. It maybe the best algebra text book but you still have to do practice problems over and over to get good grades they don't just happen because the book was so good.

I used this book in my first back-to-college algebra class, and it is a great book. Easy to understand explanations and step-by-step instructions made algebra way easier than I remembered! Please note: the companion solutions manual has many wrong answers. The book itself, however, is great. If your class is using this book, you will do well.

I would really like to thank Mr. Angel for putting together a great book. I have to admit that I was afraid of Algebra until I started studying from this book.

I wish he had written all of my text books. Everything is clearly laid out with examples that are broken down into small steps to make understanding even clearer.

The book was laid out well and establishes a good flow with the reader. Contains helpful drawings and diagrams. This book is well suited for visual learners.

For the natural treatment of emphysema this is the book.

I think this book was informative, helpful and written with the idea of helping COPD sufferes and their families. (Unline some other books that seem to have been written just for the money.) Mr. Green takes an honest and helpful approach to explaining why and how the condition effects the body and some very pratical ideas to help make living each day better. I would recommend this as great reading for anyone who has or knows someone who suffers from COPD.

Not having a medical background, I was impressed with the clarity,readability and organization of the book's presentation, as well as how exhaustively the subject of COPD was treated.

The book began with a comprehensive explanation of the nature of the disease, proceeded to the myriad protocols for treatment of the disease and ended with a summary of final thoughts on the topic. The appendices and the glossary proved useful resources as well.

Overall, the book was a very professional work that added to the general scholarship of COPD and to my understanding of this very debilitating disease.

Well written with substantial and accurate scientific evidence...there is a demand for such information by those suffering from COPD, and their families. My hope is that medical caregivers become enlightened, as well, with this book.

I am looking for someone that knows something about old books like the home garden handbook published in 1927

This book is amazing. It excels (no pun intended) not just in showing solutions, but even more important, it provides concepts and a way of thinking about solving Excel problems.
If there is one book about Excel that I recommend reading cover to cover, this is it. Even though it covers Excel 95, it is now, 10 years later, still actual.

One of the excellent book of Excel. However it is out of stock. I lent it from the library and can't find it from any book store. I hope the publisher will re-printed it.

This book doesn't deal the basics. It gives you everthing about advanced options and solution strategies. The cd-rom is very good, with many excersises and solutions. I wanted to have read this book earlier.

I am a heavy duty user of Excel and I support users of the application too. This is one of the best books I have seen on Excel's most powerful features. The chapters on array formulas and range names are the best I have read on the subject. This book is outstanding. I am here writing this review because I was hoping to order a copy for work.

This is an awesome little book on herbs and spices.Not only does it describe the history and status of the herb,it also has a recipe for each spice and herb presented.It also lists the scientific nomenclature for each as well as the various ethnocentric names,from around the world.Caveat emptor is cautioned and serving suggestions advised.There is even a small addendum of 'Spice mixtures' added,at the closing of the book.In medii rebus,there is a helpful visual photo presentation of the herbs and spices discussed.This spice book will awaken your dishes and best promotes rejuvenescene,much better than the modern artificial additives.

Part of a series which also includes guides to Produce, Meat, Cocktails and Stains, this useful and attractive little book contains a wealth of information on herbs from Angelica to Wild Lime Leaf and spices from Ajwain to Wasabi.

Set up like a field guide - with color plates in the center, along with the guide to the icons - each entry includes Other Names, General Description, Season, Purchase and Avoid, Storage, and Recipe.

Anyone who glances at this will find a place for it on the kitchen shelf. The recipes alone are likely to win you over, from Creole Mustard Sauce (mustard seed), Carrot Currant Salad (rosemary) and Veal with Myrtle. For those who want to try Shrimp with Calamint, say, or Indian Naan with Negella Seeds, online sources are listed at the back of the book.

The entries themselves are packed with information from origins and history to special preparations and seasonal considerations. A truly terrific little book.

This is a very nice book and especially so for visual people.

My favorite feature of this guide is the flavor affinities list for each item. The affinities list helps with menu planning and gives you more options for the spice or herb's use. The fact that this book has actual recipes rather than serving suggestions is a bonus. I have a couple of other herb/spice guides, but am most taken with this one.

This book is great as an introduction to the major concepts of finance. If you are looking for an advanced refernce book, this is not the one. But if you want to refresh your memory, or want a quick overview of concepts and methods, I can't think of a better book.

Every business owner, executive, accountant, banker and maybe even your lawyer should have this valuable book on their desktop! The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late! Vive la readability!

This is an exceptionally clear book that provides an up-to-date treatment of Corporate Finance that is accessible and practical. A must have!

Hal Glatzer's Fugue In Hell's Kitchen provides a new Katy Green mystery. Katy is no ordinary P.I.: she's a swing violinist in 1939 who helps a friend search for a missing classical manuscript - only to find an investigation into petty theft becomes a fight for life. Gripping, especially with the unusual plot and background setting.

I only wish I were Katy Green! She's the woman I always pictured myself being, but haven't yet become. I love the way she comes at the crime and the criminal---not to punish or exact revenge or retribution but to restore the balance of things. And the author seems to have gotten the period and the location just right---New York's Hell's Kitchen just before World War II. You can almost hear the El and smell the exhaust from the cars. I thought the first Katy Green was terrific ("Too Dead To Swing"). but this one is closer to home.

The more I read about Katy Green, the more I wish she was a real person! She's just the sort of person I'd like to know and share musical tales with. The time in which she lives is a bit before mine, unfortunately (I was still in my crib) but still - she's definitely a lady of her time.

Katy is bright and funny and smart and thrifty, and above all--a very talented musician, who can look beyond the notes on the page to pay attention to the world around her. And if that world includes good looking young men, well, why not? She isn't foolish about it, though, which is a good thing.

This tale is set slightly prior to the first book - Too Dead to Swing - so we learn how Katy ended up traveling in that swing band. As a classically-trained musician, she is somewhat of a rarity, being equally capable on violin or saxophone. The period details about New York City in the late 1930s seem right on, although not having been there at that time I can't say for certain. But I'll bet anyone who did live then would be hard put to disprove them, either.

Prejudice rears its ugly head in several ways in this engrossing mystery: it's just prior to WWII, when Oriental persons were looked at in different ways than they are now, and the migration of Southern Blacks to the North was in full flow. Add in a religious young woman from Appalachia, and you have a wonderfully mixed group of talented musicians who are not always capable of seeing beyond their music stands.

Katy follows various threads with the help of a newspaper reporter and finds the solution to several crimes, not just the one she was asked to investigate--the theft of an autograph manscript by the famous Niccolò Paganini. It's a marvelous performance, all around. I'm off to read her next adventure.

It's 1939 in Hell's Kitchen, a New York City neighborhood where even plucky heroines, like Hal Glatzer's Katy Green, fear to venture. Gangs rule the streets, and World War II lurks around the corner. As the Great Depression hangs on, musicians, like Katy Green, conservatory and bandstand trained, scramble for any kind of gig they can get. A couple of bodies turn up at a failing music academy, a pal on the faculty is accused of stealing an original Paganini manuscript, and Katy rushes in to settle scores. Her investigation is well paced, and the ending surprises. Glatzer projects as detailed a rendition of the pre-war era as any cinematographer, with authentic language, cuisine, fashion, sexual mores, and race relations, against the ever-changing backdrop of New York. A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen is time travel without the sugarcoated nostalgia. Yet, traditional mystery readers will be glad to know there's little violence or sexual explicitness. A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen should appeal to anyone who likes jazz or classical music. Like Too Dead To Swing, the first in the Katy Green series, an audio version of A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen will soon be produced. The audio of Too Dead To Swing featured fine music and brilliant actors. What fun! I can't wait to hear the audio version of A Fugue in Hell's Kitchen. But definitely read it first.

In 1939 swing violinist Katy Green is as usual unemployed and walking the pavement (and clubs) for a job. Though she would prefer to say no to her pal cellist Amalia "Am" Lee Chen's request for help, a gig is a gig, but Katy would have preferred a musical job. Instead Am asks Katy to find a priceless Paganini manuscript stolen from her cello case following a performance performed at the prestigious Meyers Conservatory.

Though Katy agrees, she finds the recent death of the conservatory's dean, Iris Meyers a bit more interesting. Katy notices the high note of the tension amidst the faculty reaching discord that along with the disastrous efforts of the deceased's successor, her brother Joseph, threatens the school's existence. .A forgery of the missing composition is returned to Am that leads to the police arresting her for stealing the manuscript. Now the case is personal as Katy follows the musical notes to Harlem trying to find the purloined item even as the conservatory's librarian, know it all, Nina Rovere is killed

Hal Glazer hits all the high notes with this delightful historical cozy that pays homage to various musical styles like swing. Katy is a wonderful lead performer who keeps the tale humming as she digs the scene in an attempt to prove that the arrest of Am is racial due to the imminent war and her friend being of Asiatic descent. Fans of historical who-done-its starring a wonderful amateur sleuth working the mean streets of the Manhattan club scene will sing in harmony with FUGUE IN HELL'S KITCHEN and want to resonate about Katy's previous number, TOO DEAD TO SWING.
