This book helped me out so much in my neurobiology class. I would definitely suggest it as a great reference for anyone taking an upper level neuro class who needs great pictures and drawings of the "tracts." The CD is also a lot of help for studying.

Among a host of admirers, Seaton's "Sayings" have always created belly-laughs galore. Now a whole new generation will have an opportunity to join in the hilarity. He is a master raconteur who makes his encounters with ordinary citizens and events just as fascinating as his escapades with the dozens of celebrities who have peopled his life and this book. It's a delightful read.

For anyone who comes from a large family or has several children of their own, this book is a must read. It is funny, nostalgic and full of memorable episodes featuring the Seaton family as they adjust to life in southern California in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Like me, you'll find many things to relate to and have a hard time putting the book down. I read it non-stop all in one afternoon. Make sure you have a tissue box close by because you'll laugh so hard the tears will flow. Buy it now. You won't be disappointed.

Bill Seaton goes straight for the jocular in this hilarious account of his family's migration to the West Coast and their adventures and misadventures thereafter. Had California been less of a far-out state, it and they probably would not have survived. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of increasingly zany annual reports.

When Bill Seaton fled the East Coast 40 plus years ago (he was allergic to snow) his friends feared he might grow up and get serious. They need not have worried -- he's as zany as ever and his chronicle of his family's coping with the ordinary and the unfamilar (including all kinds of animals) is great fun to read. He is a master of the witty turn of phrase; his humor is never
harsh and mostly directed at himself. This book is perfect for your bedside table. If you read Stephen King at bedtime, you'll have nightmares. Read Seaton and you will go to sleep laughing and next morning wake up happy.

I don't know about you, but when times are looking rather bleak, whether it's the economy, war or a personal tragedy, I like to read something humorous. Bill Seaton's book fits the bill (no pun intended.) It made me snicker, then chuckle, then belly-laugh. What a fun read about a delightful journey from D.C. to La-La Land in Southern California! This book would be a great gift to cheer up a shut-in or send to a loved one in the war zone. It's reminders of a kinder, gentler time when we could laugh despite trials and tribulations are an instant mood lifter.

Gorgeous color photos of fighters through the ages are on the inside covers and the intro sections. However, the main substance of this book are the highly detailed and labeled b/w 3-D cutaway diagrams of some well known fighter aircrafts from the WWI Morane-Saulnier Type N, WWII P-38 Lightning, DeHavilland Mosquito to the modern Dassault Rafale, Saab Gripen, F-22A Raptor and Eurofighter EF2000 Typhoon. Great for fast referencing including a brief history and specs (powerplant, performance, weight, dimensions, and armament) for each fighter. A worthy addition to any fighter enthusiast, historian, or hobbyist's library!!!

Another fine aviation resource book from William Green.

This book is simply the most complete treatise on the subject of wooden roller coasters that anyone will ever read. Tracing the coaster back centuries in time, Cartmell then brings us through the complete historical time line of designers and coasters. It would do no good to try to describe the book's contents much further here. Even a non-enthusiast will find this a fascinating read into a very interesting subject. Enthusiasts will find it very difficult to put down once they begin reading.

Review Date: 2008-06-09
Breyfogle's Volume III of his Integrated Enterprise Excellence series is the best reference book for Lean Six Sigma project execution and the best text book for Black Belt and Green Belt workshops. As a Master Black Belt, I find it extremely valuable whether I am refreshing my memory on a particular tool to use on a process improvement project, or when mentoring Green Belts, or when preparing to teach a workshop.

Some of the key features of the book are:
* Organized according to Breyfogle's comprehensive project execution DMAIC roadmap
* Includes both transactional and manufacturing examples
* Includes comprehensive examples of both statistical and non-statistical tools
* Thoughtfully written as though the author was speaking directly to me - not as someone in academia, but as a practitioner of Lean Six Sigma

Volume III also includes a summary of the Business Deployment DMAIC-based methodology that is covered in detail in Volume II. This is very useful when teaching Black Belts and Green Belts that are involved in a major Lean Six Sigma deployment. For Executives, Managers and Master Black Belts that need to know more about the Business Deployment of Lean Six Sigma, Volume II becomes their reference.

The MUST HAVE book for Continuous Improvement, Lean Six Sigma, and Integrated Enterprise Excellence implementation & execution!

Review Date: 2008-06-01
What Breyfogle's highly acclaimed and award winning "Implementing Six Sigma" book did for Six Sigma this book will do for both Lean Six Sigma and Integrated Enterprise Excellence ( IEE ) deployments. Breyfogle's presents a road-map for improvement-project-execution that will become the standard.

This book describes how to truly integrate Lean and Six Sigma tools, along with other improvement systems, such as plan-do-check-act (PDCA). The book walks the reader step-by-step through a define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) project execution, which clearly demonstrates how to effectively integrate Six Sigma and Lean tools.

There are over a thousand pages packed with philosophy, program management, and applied statistics; along with working examples of real world business problems, and how to solve them.

Breyfogle's three earlier books in his new four book-volume IEE series paint a picture of the IEE methodology and wets your appetite. This book is the main course for project execution and will exceed your expectations. This book contains all the tools, methodologies, and philosophies that Continuous Improvement practitioners need to succeed.

This book belongs on the shelf of everyone interested in successfully executing continuous improvement.

Fortunately for me, this very technical book was not at all confusing, as I ran off and bought it immediately after my humiliation. A security architects guide to building secure networks
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-25
Building a secure Internet infrastructure is akin to building a house. There are a lot of different entities involved, that all must work together to ensure that the edifice is properly constructed. If the building is not properly constructed, even a small wind can topple it.

While a house needs an architect, contractors, plumbers, electricians and much more; networks require similar sets of skills if it is to be deployed in a secure manner. The problem with designing secure Internet sites is that the dynamics of information systems means that the foundation is constantly changing. Just as companies are finishing their migrations, there are new updates to deal with. The threats and vulnerabilities are for the most part increasing quicker than most organizations are able to deal with

For those looking to design their Internet information security infrastructure, Internet Site Security is an excellent title to use as their guide. It is like an architects guide to building secure networks.

The book is quite comprehensive in its coverage of all critical areas of security. It details how to build a secure infrastructure and how to deploy policies to protect it. It covers various technologies such as intrusion detections systems and firewalls, and shows how they are to be effectively deployed.

Then advantage of the book is that it has just the right combination of breath and depth. Topics are covered effectively, and the authors do not waste the reader's time by going into obscure security minutiae or academic threats.

Readers looking for an effective guide to fundamental issues involved with information security and Internet security are well advised to read Internet Site Security. Don't design you Internet site without it.

Superb practical book

This really is a superb book. The evidence that the authors are hands on types who have implemented what they describe is very apparent, and take it from someone who has been doing security for years, the problems they describe are what you experience in real life. It's a refreshing change from other books which describe the products/technologies as if they were reading a feature list - it's hard to find a book packed with real life experience.

I'd describe it as a 'mid level' book, i.e. if you need detailed knowledge of x509 etc you need a seperate tome - but if you want a fairly detailed overview of the majority of risks affecting your web site, this is the book to choose.

Collaboratively written by Erik Schetina (CTO for TrustWave Corporation), and TrustWave Corporation senior security engineers Ken Green and Jacob Carlson, Internet Site Security is a much-needed and completely "user friendly" instructional guide to implementing solid and reliable security measures for a personal or professional internet site. Individual chapters provide an informationally useful overview of basic types of security, and address specific issues such as network and application protocols (TCP/IP), operating system and server software issues from Windows NT and 2000 to Linux and Unix, Intrusion-Detection Systems, common security mistakes in internet applications, and much, much more. Internet Site Security is a very highly recommended (if not downright indispensable) resource for surviving in today's era of cyber-crime.

This book covers the subject of Internet Security in a comprehensive manner. It contains excellent coverage on modern penetration/exploitation techniques as well as proper forensic procedures. The book shows you how to build a secure infrastructure and how to proactively deploy security policies, something that should be emphasized in every organization. It offers valuable insight on integration of a security infrastructure into an existing enterprise environment, covering both technical and political ramifications. The book discusses in-depth the strengths and weaknesses of various Intrusion Detection Systems and FireWall architectures. It also provides excellent coverage on IPSec and PAM; better than any documents that I have read on the Internet. The book provides both breadth and depth. It is neither a book all about theories and policies nor just another compilation of internet articles and mailing list discussions. Many insight gleaned from the authors' industry experience have shined through this book. It is a worth read even for a senior security engineer.

Have you ever read a book and felt like the person said exactly what's been in on your mind? That's how Sherman A. Jackson's Islam and the Blackamerican is for me. As a "Jamerican" (Jamaican and African-American), I feel this book can also apply to Black Caribbean Muslims who are unwittingly converting into "Modern Islam" and becoming Salafis.

I sincerely hope to be a part of the "Third Resurrection" Mr. Jackson so eloquently discusses in this book. If I had my way I'd require every Muslim in America to read it.

An excellent must-read

Review Date: 2005-06-28
Dr. Sherman Jackson's book is concerned with the "third resurrection" of Islam among Blackamericans. The first resurrection refers to the period before the death of Elijah Muhammad and his proto-Islamic movement, which was essentially a "holy protest" against white supremacy and anti-black racism. In the period of the second resurrection, it was charismatic leadership rather than "any objective method for scriptural interpretation that made or unmade doctrine." The third resurrection would hopefully be characterized by the "appropriation and mastery of the Islamic tradition." Dr. Jackson defines "appropriation" as the "enlisting of a set of non-indigenous ideas or doctrines for one's existential or ideological struggle." In other words, Blackamericans will not come to a foreign Islam that looks to the world through the prism of others' historical experiences ignoring their own experiences and predicaments, nor to a domesticated Islam that appeals to the dominant groups rather than combating supremacy and striving for a just peace.

In order to clear any misunderstanding, Dr. Jackson spent considerable time detailing his vision for the third resurrection. The protest spirit of Black Religion must be maintained but not to the detriment of the moral and spiritual. Put simply, what is required is a balance between protest and piety, activism and spirituality, the pursuit of secular goals and the quest for eschatological success. Black religion must rid itself of the exclusive obsession with race and the insistence on eliminating the evil of white supremacy without an attempt to contribute good to the world. Blacks, and the other Muslims, must understand that they need to recognize the US constitution and embrace America "in protest," something that Dr. Jackson authenticates and justifies using the Islamic sources and tradition, and not to destroy themselves by victimology, glorification of ignorance, and rejectionism. At the same time, the last thing needed is a theology of accommodation, dictated by certain tendencies in Immigrant Islam especially after the catastrophe of 9/11, where Islam is domesticated and used to bolster the assumptions of the privileged groups and to beg for their recognition.

Dr. Jackson deals with aspects of the relationship between Blackamerican and Immigrant Islam focusing on the monopoly exercised by the immigrants over the interpretation of the faith and the determination of the substance and priorities of Islam in America. His analysis is elegant and deeply objective. This is clear from his refusal to make one historical experience the sole determiner of the goals and objectives of Islam in the US and his refusal of "false universals" where a version of Islam is considered to be the "true" Islam without paying any attention to the particularities of the various Muslim communities. Rejecting "false universals" does not at all mean compromising anything essential to the doctrinal integrity of Islam; it means taking the historical experiences and customs of the different Muslim groups into account while formulating a vision of Islam that helps them in this life and the afterlife.

Despite his correct and convincing critique of Immigrant Islam, Dr. Jackson also deconstructs the assertions of "Black Orientalism"---a tendency by some Blacks to consider Islam the (main) enemy of Black people. The fundamental problem with Black Orientalism is that it analyzed the historical experience of Black people through the prism of American slavery. Dr. Jackson did not deny the presence of anti-Black sentiments in the Islamic tradition. Backing his arguments with historical facts, he calls for an objective assessment of these since there is a huge difference between societies which produce expressions of racial and color prejudice and societies that are founded on notions of racial superiority of some people and the utter inferiority of others who do not have the same skin color.

Dr. Jackson's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of Islam in America. The most important thing about his prescriptions is that they can be embraced by all Muslims regardless of their background. First, they are faithful to the definitives of Islam. Second, they are balanced and take the different aspects of the Islamic faith into account. Third, they are based on the emphatically tolerant and pluralistic Islamic tradition---something that should promote intra-Muslim tolerance and, most importantly, prevent any particular group from laying exclusive claim over the divine truth.

a very interesting book- extremely analytical- especially in its critique of Black Orientalism- while unlike regular Orientalism which misinterpreted the Muslim world in order to dominate it, misinterprets the Muslim world in order to protect black identity from influences which supposedly threaten the African core. He's very adept at making comparisons- and highlights some issues that are certainly the most pressing towards the Black Muslim community today; now that Black NAtionalism is no longer a common rallying point for black Muslims, and now that immigrant influence has seen to be obnoxious and domineering, it is indeed time for a "third resurrection"- for blackamerican Muslims to appropriate the mainstream Muslim tradition for themselves so that they are neither dominated by Muslim foreigners nor simply using Islam as a protest ideology without an authentic religious connection. To become more in a sense like the West African Muslims who so impressed Blyden- deeply Muslim, yet dignified having appropriated it for themselves, not having been dominated by non-black foreigners. Sherman Jackson's solutions are interesting (it is after all just a book meant to start off discussion)- his consideration of Sufism interesting- I certainly hope to see more such discussion in this direction- but of course- it will be long before the masses see the issues above as lucidly as the academics.

Sherman Jackson has delivered a powerful piece on the history and current situation of religion in the Blackamerican community. Jackson dispels some myths as to why Islam has found such popularity in the Black community. He also provides poignant insight into the nature of how Islam has come to operate in the West. Alternative choices are outlined and provided to the Black community in reconciling with their uniquely Black and Western heritage. I cannot recommend the book enough. A must read for anyone who has religious, social or anthro-social interests.

Dr Jackson write a remarkable summary of the condition of Islam in America, specifically as it relates to the Blackamerican (a term he justifies using early in the book) and Immigrant Muslims. For academics and laypeople, the insights he draws from his research and his own experience as a Blackamerican Muslim are eye-opening, especially as he relates the challenge of indigenizing Islam in America.

He concludes the book with a chapter on Sufism, Muslim spirituality, and the Blackamerican struggle. While I disagree with some of his conclusions, he nonetheless offers Blackamerican Muslims a natural entry point into Sufism, a part of Islam that is greatly maligned in some Muslim circles.

Overall, a must read for Muslim Americans, immigrant, white and black!

Wonderful stories and anecdotes that offer great wisdom. I like how Carolyn takes each feeling, mind and belief habbit and offers practice tools to support healthy changes. This is a book that you would pass on to a friend or client in need of support regarding any life challenge, of course after reading it yourself. And you don't even have to read the whole book. You can go to the section that deals with your specific challenge. I find I go back to this book again and again as the challenges change and I need different support tools for the new life situation.

As a chiropractor I have a great interest in that which brings peace, more joy and freedom into anyone's life. In reading Carolyn Hobb's book, 'Joy, No Matter What', she condensed what I have been trying to communicate for some 28 years. This book is alive! One gets the sense that Ms. Hobbs has experieced completely what she is writing about and holds nothing back in communicating her deepest truths. If you are interested in playing full out in life, holding nothing back, this book is a must read.

We were in Colorado for Christmas and my most darling nice took the kids out to a movie and I don't know where else. While running around they stumbled upon Mr. Ludy doing a book signing. My son got this one. It is a coming of age book for a young boy (very young). There is a mouse to look for on each picture. It is very cute and the pictures are great. My 8 year old really liked this book a lot. So much that I will be looking for the others. I would recommend this book for 4th grade and below.

Jujo is a great book for all ages. On one hand, it's an exciting story about a boy's right of passage; on the other, it's has spiritual messages that remind us that we are never alone, even during our biggest struggles.

My four and six year old children love it. The eighth graders and tenth graders I teach love it. It makes a great discussion and writing prompt.

All of Mark Ludy's books are amazing. His illustrations in THE FLOWER MAN captured my attention, causing me to check out this other books, but the impact of his stories keeps me looking for the next one he will publish.

Once again Mark Ludy has captured profound truth in a light and entertaining way. Illustrations of Jujo of the Jungle are exceptional and the story line is multi-facited, yet simple. I bought a copy for one of our grand children but will probably get one for Nana's bookshelf, too.

Mark Ludy's book, JuJo, is a about "The Youngest Tribesman." Jujo must face a rite of passage, a concept rather unfamiliar to most young people in western civilizations. It is a fine introduction to Africa and to tribes with cultures different from our own. It is entertaining, a great adventure story that includes enough animals to keep any young child interested. And the artwork and quality of the book are truly something to brag about. Here's to a great and growing audience for Mark Ludy.

This is a really cute book about people coming together and not just about adoption (altho, that is why I bought it..). Great to find a book about a father and a child! We are enjoying it very much! Thanks!

We checked this book out at the library and decided we needed to own it. It is a wonderful book about a goose wanting to be a father and the "green goose" searching for his "real" mother after discovering he looked different. He realizes he has a wonderful father and goes back home. It's great for adopted children.

a story of adoption that did not forget the story!

Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep.

This book is great for all parents of adopted children. This book grabbed the attention of my child, and he was entirely enthused through the whole reading and just absorbed it all. Two thumbs up for this great write!

You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.
