This cookbook is a must for anyone who loves delicious sun-dried tomatoes. The author gives us an introduction on how the tomatoes are specially sun-dried and even gives advice on how to make your own sun-dried tomatoes at home. Due to their "specialty" status in cooking, it can be very difficult to find recipes calling for sun-dried tomatoes, let alone recipes centered around them. That is why this book is so wonderful. A wide variety of recipes are given and each recipe I have tried has been a success. This is a superb compilation of delicious and healthy cooking ideas.

Well, when the book first arrived, all I could think of were the types of books that were 'field guides to. . .' I actually considered sending it back as I thought it would be of little value--I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE MISTAKEN! While the book gives the appearance that it is pure textbook in style and format it was at least for me VERY informational, AND put together in a very readable format. There is an absolute wealth of technical information on berries and fruits but the book is also written so that even the most berry-less person (myself) can easily use the information. The book contains a great section on the care of berries and fruits with several chapters on pruning. It also lists the berries and fruits individually with a chapter devoted to each. The chapters all contain the same type of topics: overview, selection, care, disease, suggested cultivars for your zone, and anything unique about the cultivar. It is also very well photographed AND the illustrations are very helpful. I found it to be a valuable addition to my growing gardening library with a great deal of very practical advice!

I bought this book as I was beginning to plan my first kitchen garden. It's great- tells you what to plant when, the conditions the veggies like, and some good varieties. The thing I like best about this book is that most garden books are written for northern or central-us gardeners. This one tells me what will work in Memphis, and when to start it. Plus, Felder Rushing is really, really funny. I've had this book for several years and refer to it frequently during the growing season and for planning, when I'm thinking about trying new vegetables.

"Terrific Tomatoes" is attractive and easy-to-follow. It begins with general growing advice and moves on to specifics such as container gardening - for color, with herbs, in hanging baskets.
"In the Garden" Luebbermann reviews techniques and varieties for a "really early" patch, an Italian tomato garden, a riot of colors. Another section is devoted to exotics, from tomatillos to ground cherries to heirlooms. And she concludes with tomatoes in the kitchen, from soup to sun-dried to salsa. Photos by Faith Echtermeyer are lush and crisp and show the plants as they really are - complete with insect holes and spots.

This is THE book for anyone who wants to know virtually everything about what rates as the world's most popular vegetable among home gardeners. Although the tomato itself originated in South America this book tells how varieties now include the Black Russian, Colossal Yellow and Dwarf Wax as well as many more familiar red tomatoes found in Europe, the US and the author's native Australia. There are plenty of pictures telling us how to grow, graft and keep healthy tomatoes in our own backyards and Mr Gilbert even shows how they manage to cultivate them in China's Gobi Desert. Hints on harvesting and storing are followed by a very useful, easy to read 'everything you want to know' chart detailing more than 120 varieties. In between are the gardeners' prizes - recipes to help you savour the fruits of your labours! In short almost anyone can grow (and eat) tomatoes and this compact book is the ideal reference work for enthusiasts everywhere.

I have used this book for years to introduce fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables into my perennial borders. Clevely's advice is sound, clear, and complete. He takes the mystery out of pruning everything from grapes to fruit trees, advises on cultivars and pollination, and has a great playful attitude about what a garden can be. One of the most-referenced and reliable books on my shelf.
