This book is simply the best book out there on the subject of growing food in the mountains of the Southwest. Author Lisa Rayner is a real perfectionist who goes the extra mile to get her facts straight. In this third edition of her now-classic permaculture text, her attention to detail is beautifully combined with the helpful illustrations of Zack Zdinack into a well-organized guide that has become even more indispensable as the need to grow more of our food locally has become more intense. This book not only explains how to grow food in an arid, high-altitude climate, but also how to do so in a way that works with nature using permaculture techniques. Even if you have never heard of permaculture, you will learn how to follow nature's examples to succeed at growing food in a harsh environment. As with Rayner's other book The Sunny Side of Cooking - Solar cooking and other ecologically friendly cooking methods for the 21st centurythis book on growing food is well researched and contains an extensive list of resources. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I am the author's husband.

I usually look in the library to see what books I would like to own. Miracle-Gro Guide to Growing Delicious Vegetables Fruits and Herbs is a book I am going to buy. The pictures are large enough to see what a product will look like. The advice is correct as well. I live in Arizona and these authors are aware that most products in Arizona can get badly sunburned in the summer months without shading. I am glad a publcation has finally come that can give good advice.

I have been involved with health issues for almost 30 years, and the information in John Heinerman's book is very helpful. The author tells how common foods and herbs can help relieve over 100 health conditions such as allergies, heart problems, gallstones, bladder infections, liver ailments, menopause, high blood pressure, warts, and yeast infections. The book is arranged in alphabetical order according to disease symptoms. For example, green tea was found to help heart disease in a Japanese study of men over 40. Total cholesterol was reduced and HDL increased. Many other disease solutions are discussed in the book, also. You'll be glad you bought this book!

If you never knew what an "heirloom" was in terms of gardening, you will after this read. I came away from this book with a whole new perspective, admiration, and appreciation for maintaining the integrity of each individual plant, not matter what it was.
This provides insight on all the aspects of heirlooms from the government, scientists, seed companies, and home gardeners. What started out as an article for the New York Times culminated into this book which is highly informative from someone who knew nothing in the beginning and learned more than most of us ever will about the subject.

This is an excellent book on vegetable gardening. I like it enough to be buying a second copy for my daughter. No one book covers everything but this is one I consult fairly regularly, especially when laying out a new bed or design. I also recommend Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew and Postage Stamp Gardening, can't remember author.

As kids' books go, this is a great little book with a nice large font and great photographs and pictures. There's a little bit about what a pumpkin is--a fruit or a vegetable--and then some history, and then the uses of a pumpkin for halloween. Each page has only about two or three sentences at most for young readers. At the end, there is also a great little glossary with pictures of items covered in the book. This would make a perfect little Halloween gift for the "pumpkins" in your life!
