I am such a lover of the Sweet Pickles series. I still have almost every book in the series. I am 27 years old now. My mother used to get them for me when I was growing up. My favorite character in the series is Iguana. They were always getting into some kind of mischief. I will put the titles of the books that I have at a later time.

I am 32 years old and my brother is 28. We loved the Sweet Pickles books while growing up! Luckily my mother saved the few books in the series that we actually owned. Now my 2 year old daughter is in love with "Me too Iguana!".

These books are simple, easy to relate to and the topics are timeless and totally applicable to young kids today.

I can only hope that some innocent fool will let go of thier kids set at a garage sale and I will be there to snag them for my daughter to treasure in her own book collection.

We are having an Arts and Humanities fair in our school district. Our high school kids read to the preschoolers on our campus. We also have a science room with an iguana and we want to bring our iguana Iggy to the fair and we wanted a book to read to the children. I remembered the Sweet Pickles books I read to my daughter, she is now 23. We loved those books. This is the perfect book about an iguana and I hope all the children at the fair will enjoy it as much as my daughter and I did years ago. Recommend it and all the Sweet Pickles Books. T

I absolutely adored this series of books and now I want copies more than ever. I don't remember how I ended up with the whole series but they were by far my most loved and abused books as a kid. In the spirit of sharing the wealth (much to my own protests) my mother gave my collection to a younger relative when she thought I had outgrown them. I'm sure the relative enjoyed them as much as I did but I thought she should have found her own set and left mine alone! I hope that these delightful stories will be reprinted. I desperately want to collect the set so that I can enjoy the series from a parents' perspective when I have children. To anyone who is lucky enough to have copies of these treasures, by all means hold on to them, they're worth it!

Sad to say, I'd never heard of Jolly Roger Bradfield before... until I found an original book at an Antique Book Fair. It was a bit too pricey for me so I checked out Amazon... YES! They're all here! Very cute stories and GREAT artwork. I will be getting them all!

This book is fabulous through and through. I love the creative, quirky illustrations and the imaginative storyline, but what really sets this book apart is the beautiful message: that the right prince for a princess is the one who shows kindness and consideration for others. A great message for girls among the princess-fantasy filled world of books.

A reprint of a children's classic - entertaining storyline, whimsical illustrations, timeless moral lessons. It recently captured and held the attention of my son's entire kindergarten class as effectively as it did mine over 40 years ago. The lesson: compassion and thoughtfulness is worthy of the biggest rewards in life.

I've looked for this book for years, wanting to read it to my own children. How lucky I am that it has been republished and that I still have children young enough to properly enjoy it, and how sad that my older children missed it when they were in the prime audience age range!

This is a beautiful, thoroughly enchanting story which illustrates how woefully wrong it is to sacrifice the well being of others in striving for your own personal joy and success. I recall how taken I was with the colony of artist mice painting mini masterpieces and the pie making creature, how much I would have wanted them for my own even without the promise of a princess' hand in marriage (or prince's for that matter, though at age six I wasn't interested in either) as a reward. I was awed by Bernard's show of respect for creatures I would have had difficulty recognizing as anything other than toys before learning they had lives and purposes of their own. Some people go through their entire lives without learning that.

I absolutely love this book!

My daughter was introduced to this book at preschool and begged us to buy it for her. We all love the engaging drawings, the simple but very cute story and the repetitive opportunity to holler Stoooop thaaat Pickle! A very cute book, worth searching out. Especially good for Jewish kids in place of The Gingerbread Boy, or for city kids, given the colorful street scenes throughout.

I heard the book read aloud in a teacher's certification reading class and ordered it for my 7 year old daughter. She loves to read and enjoys new books. She has me read it often even though she has read it herself and has her own copy. She took it to school her first day of 2nd grade and her teacher let her read to the class. The teacher enjoyed the book. I will be sharing the book with the 2nd grade teacher I am working with for my field placement.

My three year old grandson loves "Stop That Pickle!," and has listened to it so many times that he just about has it memorized! This is the story of a runaway pickle that is chased by a crowd that includes a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, seventeen salted almonds, and a bottle of grape soda--and the illustrations are off-the-wall, too. But this is Sam's alltime favorite book. It's fun to read, and none of us adults have are tired of that crazy pickle's adventure.

For many years, I collected regional cookbooks. Eventually, I ran out of space, but if I could only keep one cookbook, "Hollyhocks and Radishes," without a doubt, would be the one to save.

I bought my copy at a wonderful local bookshop in St. Ignace Michigan, which is just across the water from Mackinac Island. The title intrigued me, along with the sub-head "Mrs. Chard's Almanac." All I can say is we each need a little Mrs. Chard in our lives.

Her delightful correspondance with author Bonnie Stewart Mickelson opens each chapter in the cookbook. The notes contain quaint reminders of life in northern Michigan surrounded by the bounty of a roadside market.

Judy Chard's love of fresh vegetables is evident in the list of ingredients filling the pages of my well-worn and well-loved copy, which was part of the first printing in 1989.

My own hand-scribbled annotations reflect how my husband and daughters reacted to a new dish, such as a simple Roast Chicken with Herbs, when I wrote "Fantastic! The garlic is mild, along with the seasoning, and it makes great leftovers" or (my personal favorite) Swedish Pot Roast, which my family deemed "Great! Rich and flavorful."

I have had this cookbook for 10 years now and it is my favorite. I just tried another new recipe recently that was excellent. It is a great cookbook for all of the fresh fruits and vegetables that you can pick up at the farmer's market...and the fish recipes are great. The stuffed trout on the grill was the first recipe I ever tried when my husband and I were dating and it is outstanding. I'm going to buy one as a gift for my brother who is getting married next year. Highly recommend it!

I absolutely adore this book--not only as a cookbook, but as good basic reading material! It is full of delightful stories, quotes, helpful hints, etc....The recipes are very straight forward, and call for loads of fresh produce, which makes for healthier eating. Granted, some of the recipes are a bit 'far out' for me, but seeing as how I am a native Georgian, it is only natural that foods from 'up north' be a little odd for me. But, I try them none-the-less--this book is a favorite of mine!!! Don't put it on a shelf--leave it out on the coffee table!

Hollyhocks & Radishes is a delightful journal that originated with Judith Chard's Summer roadside vegetable stand in the Upper Pennisula of Michingan. Not only were fresh-grown vegetables available, but also the delicious recipes that could be created with them. Soon customers became friends corresponding with their own recipes and anecdotes. The book is illustrated with handwritten letters and drawings along with Mrs. Chard's wisdom and advice about the season's, birds, flowers, and, of course, her recipes. It's a great book to read on a cold winter's day when you're longing for Summer. Out of our collection of probably 100 cookbooks, this is our favorite. It's always my gift for a Bride-to-Be.

This childrens book illustrates a variety of typical situations that a peanut-allergic child might come across in his daily life. That in itself was helpful to my family, but we also liked the way the boy handles the situations. Hopefully, it gives my child an example of what he needs to say to people when he finds himself in a "peanut pickle". I also want our family and close friends to read this short book to help them understand the situations my child needs to avoid.

Excellent advice and lots of fun

This is the story of a six year old boy called Ben and how he copes in various situations with his peanut allergy. Of all the books I have read on this subject, this one was my favorite. It is very thorough. Dealing with all of the ways peanuts or products containing nut traces may be offered to a child by well meaning adults or friends. The information is given is excellent and nothing is left out. My five year old loved it as it showed her how to say no. It describes other safe foods that a peanut allergic child can eat so it has a very upbeat and positive message for the allergic child. I often allow her friends to borrow a copy as an indirect way of informing their parents of my daughters dietary restrictions. It is a fun way to get life saving information across to caregivers and friends. Suitable for children aged four and up. There are more basic books on the market for younger children.

I thought this book was absolutely fabulous. Having a toddler with the peanut allergy can be very frightening. The book actually goes through different scenarios that can be dangerous for kids with peanut allergies. It teaches kids, AND ADULTS, how to take precautions, in a cute, likable manner. I think I learned as much as my daughter, who absolutely loves this book. It made a great addition to the library at her Pre-School, as many kids enjoy it, even those without the Peanut Allergy. It helped us tremendously. WELL WORTH THE PURCHASE. Even if you have an older child with a newly diagnosed nut allergy, I would recommend purchasing it just to learn about cross-contact risks.

My four year old is severely allergic to peanuts. He understands his allergy, wears his MedAlert bracelet and knows to ask about ingredients if I am not around, but I think that he sometimes feels a bit different/left out.

We read this book, and he said - "Mommy, Where did you find a book about me??" He asked that I re-read it 3 times!

We brought the book into his daycare center (per his request) and he told his teachers that we had brought in a book "About Me and My Allergy" and that he wanted to share it with his class so that they understood that he is "just like them except for the peanuts".

A few days after the teacher read the book to the class, I had other parents tell me that their children were talking about the book and asking them questions about how to keem my son from getting sick again.

What a great book - I recommend it to everyone.

This is a very fun book, though most of the story is via illustrations due to the limitation of only using a ten word vocabulary.

I read this to my daughter once. Then I made ten flash cards and we practiced with them until she knew them backwards, forwards and upside down. Once she learned them, she was "allowed" to read the book all by herself and thus began the "backwards" tradition of her reading to me instead of me reading to her.

She is 25 today and a voracious reader, so this book worked! And it's *fun* to read!

As a toddler this was my favorite book (my parents tell me). Now that I am a parent, I looked to find this part of my childhood for my own toddler. It was difficult to come by, but worth the time spent searching. It is a very simple book (uses only 10 words as the series denotes), but simplicity is its strength. My toddler is quickly learning to say "pickle" and "popped" after only a few reads.

Again, a memory from childhood. This had to be one of the very first books i check out of the school library in kindergarten. I can't believe how hard it actually was to track down over the years, but again the internet and amazon save a collector again. This is a funny little story about a town and their king gathering pickles and piling them high, until suddenly they explode and a huge pond of pickle juice is made. It simple, easy to read, and you can have a heck of a lot of fun with it reading it to your kids...or if your board in the office. So please consider this book as a funny piece in a kids collection that could be passed down from generation to generation. There are other versions available of this book, including a 10-word reader series book, as well as the original scholastic hard back (and this paperback). there is also a paperback reissue available at some places online.

It is a ridiculously simple book, and utterly entertaining. Plot: Peter has to pick some pickles... Then fun and chaos ensues. The artwork nicely compliments the story and still makes me giggle to this day. Well worth any price you pay for it.

Mary Anne Dragan has assembled the best collection of recipes for homemade condiments that I have ever seen. I inherited some truly exceptional recipes for pickles and chutneys from several directions through several generations of great family cooks, but Dragan has discovered, or at least she has published, some of the best recipes I have ever tried. Her instructions are straightforward and her sidebar comments, suggesting for example that pickling grapes instead of cherries makes an unusual and wonderful side dish, are engaging. If you get just one book about relishes, jams and chutneys, make it this one.

I've been jammin' for about 5 years now, and when I looked at this book, I was re-energized. The recipes are easy to follow, there are quite a few new combinations that I have really been enjoying. But the thing I liked the most about this book was her explanations of the different types of recipes, the phraseology, (you feel like you're in a one on one conversation) the things that make a marmalade a marmalade, as opposed to a jam, She gives you a "heads up" on what can go wrong and what to look out for. After reading this book you're left with a general overall feeling of confidence, that "yeah, I can make that!"
The antipasto pickles turned out not only tasy, but pretty as well. And doesn't Butterscotch Peach Jam just sound wonderful? Next on my list is the Carrot and Coconut Curry.
This is a must have for any beginning jammer, and experienced ones as well.

I read many books on preserving before I found this one. Other books had boring ingredients and uninspiring recipes. Once I read the recipes in Well Preserved I knew I was ready to make my first attempt at jam. My fist batch was delicous and easy. I have since made chutneys, jellies, and marmalades; all turning out perfect. My friends have liked the results of Mary Anne Dragan's recipes so much that I am giving the book as Christmas gifts.

Why would you want to eat mass produced canned food when you could easily preserve your own at home? You'll know what went into them: fresh fruit, less sugar, without preservatives and full of color and flavor. This book has many recipes and color photos, also a collection of recipes using preserves from earlier chapters. Basics of preserving are explained... equipment, jars, processing and storing. Canning food can be a lot of work, but it's so rewarding to have a pantry of flavors from the summers bounty. These chutney's are full of spices and innovative combinations (ginger, currants, figs, vinegar, sugar, honey, onion, dates and citrus). Jams, preserves, conserves and jellies can be used for glazes and sauces. It's easy to preserve food for your own pantry and ideal for gifts. Something you've made yourself is more appreciated, especially when it's as tasty as the recipes in this collection.

This is excellent for new cooks and really good for old cooks...experience old, not age old as a lot of us refuse to age. New cooks to preserving will find step by step instructions. Old cooks will find new recipes...the pickled asparagus was undescribable. The spicy hot green beans added to a Bloody Mary can't be beat. On a cold winter day while cheering the Chicago Bears (even IF they lose)you experience that good "I made this" feeling!
