Book Description: Yes. Carmen Coyle so desperately wanted to be in love. ...But with her best friend of more than twenty years? JR Ellis had always been there for her, but she didn't like him that way, did she? To complicate matters, a stranger was targeting her--hunting her down for mysterious reasons. JR was determined to keep her safe--at all costs. Protecting Carmen meant staying close to her, and JR knew she'd be a difficult temptation to resist. And as friends became lovers, JR wondered if this hot target would consent to be his...forever.

This book is full of false or misleading appearances, twists and turns, and just all out "different" characters. You have names that aren't really the person's names or nicknames that are nowhere near that person's name, a murder that needs to be solved, attempted murder(s) to prevent, childhood sweethearts (?), childhood friends, well described emotions, unrequited love(?), a look at a "somewhat different" thought process, self-worth issues, dramatic secrets from left field ... whew. This is a nice best-friends-grew-up-together-/-can-we-be-more, opposites-attract romance combined with a twist and turn suspense.

If you ever wondered if organic farming can really be as productive as chemical farming, or if it is really better for the environment, then read this book. The author manages to include a lot of scientific data and theory, yet keep everything readable and entertaining, and it will convince you. Beyond addressing the organic farming debate, the book tells the fascinating story of how coffee is grown, and of the indigenous people who grow it. This would be an excellent text for college courses, and also for graduate seminars.

This a fascinating book to use as supplement to science classes. It is about the "inner world", the one we see only in a microscope or instrument that can visualize a world we can't see with our own eyes. Kids will love this book and the photos are the type that will keep some captivated for hours. There is also a section on strobe light photography, used to create stop-motion photography and satellite imaging is used to map the Earth. A fascinating book, I love the text too! Seymour Simon is a good children's writer of science books.

This cookbook is a perfect gift for any coffee lover! The recipes are great accompaniments to coffee as well as great ways to include coffee in recipes! I have a book for myself and have purchased a second one to create a coffee lover's basket for an upcoming benefit auction! You would be smart to add this book to your collection.

Americana or How to Catch a Condor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-29
Paul Metcalf has been published by small presses. His work is now collected in three volumes in the Coffee House Press. This is volume one. The works are arranged in chronological order. The book is Whitmanesque in the sense that it is so American, so filled with American people and American geography.

The first part is WILL WEST about a Cherokee ball player. Will West goes to his mother to tell her he has quit the ball team and that he has killed a woman. She gives him the money he has sent to her to escape punishment. This work and the others in the volume consists of both poetry and prose. The story moves from Will and his traveling with a truck driver named Ferd to the Civil War and De Soto the Spanish explorer.

The work GENOA follows. We are in the city of Indianapolis, Crawford County. In the past Indiana was probably a rank lush swamp. Metcalf cites and quotes the works and biography of his ancestor, Herman Melville.

The narrator's brother Carl died in the electric chair. Michael Mills is a nonpracticing physician, a house husband. This work, as is the case with the previous one and others in this volume, has a mixed media feel to it, something virtually homespun. The work of Metcalf, as Melville's, is filled with medical lore, sea lore, scientific lore, and explorers' tales.

Carl Mills went to Alaska, to Spain to fight with the Loyalists, to China to participate in World War II in the RAF where he was put into a Japanese POW camp and tortured. The history of Christopher Columbus is used in GENOA. Columbus and Melville were both men of vision.

Carl ended up in St. Louis at the center of things. The narrator visited him and found him reading THE CONFIDENCE MAN. Carl said later in a mental hospital quoting that work that a sick philosopher is incurable.

A portion on Theodore Dreiser reminds me of USA, John Dos Passos. The crime resulting in the execution is a combination of fiction and history. GENOA and the latter sections in the volume have bibliographies. GENOA, in the collage-like use of materials, resembles EXECUTIONER'S SONG and leaves the reader with the same sadness.

PATAGONI is the third work of the collection. As indicated by the title it is a derivation of the place name Patagonia. We visit the world presented to explorers of the Amazon and the Andes. Henry Ford is a character in PATAGONI. The work owes a nod to William Carlos Williams, mentioned, and his poem PATERSON. Sialia is Indian for bluebird, the name of Ford's yacht.

The next section is the MIDDLE PASSAGE, and the final one is called APALACHE. They concern for the most part and in great detail North America. An exception is a wonderful treatment of the Luddite Riots. In terms of time one moves from geological pre-human history through Eric the Red and Roger Williams and Blackstone, dissenters from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, to the Civil Rights Movement.

Paul Metcalf is a master of his craft. Where have I been, I ask myself, to have not encountered his work earlier.

This is a PC book that you can actually sit down and read cover to cover. The conversational style just carries you along and, in the end, you've learned things you didn't even know you didn't know. A portion of the book is devoted to the question that troubles every computer owner from time to time: What should I buy (or use) to make my computer do what I want? This book is invaluable because it tells not "what to buy" but how to make the decision. If you've always thought of your computer as "just a box", or if you've always thought it was your fault when the machine didn't work properly, this book will open your eyes.

This Fairy Flies
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-19
This little book has the original run of Brooke McEldowney's Pibgorn. The first twenty or so pages are in black & white as they were originally. The remainder are in color. This modest beginning is the tale of Pibgorn wanting more than what is in here home world so she flees her fairy world for the world of humans. Pib is very small in her normal state (thus the title), but can assume normal human size. Her adventures include meeting Amos, who falls in love with her, and Drusilla, an 800 year old succubus, who loves Amos. The initial story involves how Dru, despite here supernatural powers, comes to accept Pib as the object of Amos's affections.

This strip is gloriously drawn in bright vivid colors. The female characters are fetchingly drawn with distinct personalities. The strip is highly literate. Since this book was created McEldowney has done an extended Pibgorn sequence on Midsummer Night's Dream that was simply off-the-chart good. Hopefully that will be in future books.

I own over 2,000 cookbooks and this is my favorite on the subject of tea and tea goodies. Many of the recipes have become standards in my home: scones, cucumber sandwiches, pate-filled baguettes... and, my all-time-#1 fave: English Triffle. Yum!
