I am a college instructor who teaches nutrition & food science, and make this book available for my students. It is by far the most complete and understandable dictionary for undergraduate nutrition, food science, and food service managements students that I have ever found. This has got to be one of the most comprehensive, if not the most comprehensive book on the art of bartending and mixology.

Everything from glassware, mixing, tools, and garnishes is covered and that's not even starting on the actual drinks. They have absolutely EVERY drink imaginable.

Now don't go looking for some drink that you invented years ago while you were in college, because it's not going to be there. But every legitimate drink is listed here. GREAT BOOK!

Waldin's knowledge of his subject is immense but conveyed with an ease.

He is clearly no stooge to the grand marques and is forthright in his opinions without being pompous.

Whether you're a wine lover or merely someone that loves the countryside, this book is really all you'll need for a terrific week in Bordeaux.

Only book of its type, as far as I know. Went on a wine tasting trip to Priorat, Montsant, and Penedes with my father, and found this guide invaluable. It was practically the only source of information we had when we set out, and it gave us plenty of info for a perfect 4 days of wine tasting. Simple things, like hotels, generally efficient routes through the regions, restaurants, etc., would have been dramatically more difficult to plan without this guide. For what it's worth, she's absolutely right about the tourism office in Falset, they have a giant map of the Montsant and Priorat regions that supplements this book perfectly.

If I have any complaint, it's that she's very liberal in her praise. She is unlikely to tell you when a given winery, much less a region, isn't very good. But so what? The purpose of this guide is to give you enough information to be able to go there and make your own judgments.

Waldin has done it again! A terrific read.

This is a writer that really knows his subject. But his knowledge is conveyed in such a way that he doesn't make the whole subject of wine intimidating. Nor does he patronize his readership.

Monty Waldin is one of the few wine writers out there that both literally and metaphorically is willing to get his hands dirty; he goes to these vineyards, he works on the vines and the soil and he is not beholden to any paymaster.

WARNING: It'll make you want to go to Tuscany.

I had expected a traditional (both context-wise and style-wise) cook book with recipes which I intended to use purely for research purposes. But this is not a strict "recipe" book. Nor is it a more loosely styled recipe book with text.

It is straight prose styling and absolutely delighful. It contains mountain vernacular - but not to the extreme. The recipes that it contains are narrative - more suggestions - as in "To it was added the whole array of giblets...." and "They made heaps of rich gravy to add to that in the turkey pots".

While you probably wouldn't cook Sunday dinner directly from the book, it will surely make you wish you were back there having Martha McCulloch-Williams do the cooking for you.

Catherine Murdock's book 'Domesticating Drink' is an intiguing and insightful look into the world of alcohol in the US between 1870 and the Second World War. In direct opposition to the many historians who claim that Prohibition was caused by the interests of big business, Murdock's study brings the locus closer to the home, a locality that she claims was responsible for the majority of change. Utilising cookbooks, etiquette guides and department store catalogues as primary sources, Murdock reveals the major part that alcohol played in the everyday life of the middle class woman in the time under study. Fascinating for it's attention to detail and it's myriad of sources, Murdock's treatment of the lead-up years to Prohibition, and the eventual breakdown of the Eighteenth Amendment makes for compelling reading. A great introduction into a hotly contested debate, and a welcome change from texts which ignore the role of women in the 'Noble Experiment'.

In Drink: Never Mind The Peanuts, wine experts Susy Atkins and Dave Broom effectively collaborate to provide the reader with a highly entertaining and informative primer on the many styles of wines, beers, and spirits. The informative, profusely illustrated, "reader friendly" text is enhanced with wine style charts featuring at-a-glance key styles of wine, what grapes they include, and whether they offer value for cost. There are a wealth of cocktail recipes for those who like to mix it, food pairing suggestions, even party ideas.
