Spotter's Guide to Bottled BBQ SaucesReview Date: 2005-06-17
Being a meat lover, I have explored various bottled BBQ sauces for quite a while. You can get a bewildering array of them from supermarkets, summer fesivals, webtailers, etc. I found only a couple of them that passed muster (Chris & Pitts; Everett & Jones). I also neglected to keep a diary of what I sampled, and what I thought of them.
This book has already done most of the groundwork for you. It is sort of like a field guide that you take with you to the store or web site when you want to buy some BBQ sauce. It has reviews, descriptions, and pictures of at least 200 different ones. Although I have violent disagreements about some of the opinions, for the most part the book is an extremely valuable and useful resource.
It categorizes sauces into 3 types: sweet, tangy, and fiery. There are some recipes at the end, but I would not take these very seriously. It serves as a good starting point for those who would like to explore the wonderful world of bottled BBQ sauces. For example, I discoverd Gates from this book, and it explains why I hate KC Masterpiece and Bull's Eye, but like Kraft. It is also a good resource to help you avoid those BBQ sauces that taste like pancake syrup with a little ketchup and tabasco sauce.
Also note that there a many boutique brands in this industry. Many in this book are no longer available, and many have sprung to life since this book was published in 1999.

Remus does barbecue sauce aficiandos a huge favor with his "Great Barbecue Sauce" book. The originator of the American Royal International Barbecue Sauce competition, held each october in KCMO, Remus KNOWS HIS SAUCES.
His experienced tastebuds are able to discern the good, bad, ugly of over 300 commercially bottled barbeuce sauces.
I've known Remus for years. If anyone knows about commercially produced barbecue sauces, he does. This is a great volume, packed with superb information.
If you're not making your own sauces (see my book-The Great Barbecue Companion), then you're buying them, and Remus' book will steer you in the right direction.

Nothing Ever ChangesReview Date: 2007-06-20
What is amazing is that the problems faced by the Green Berets in Vietnam described by Moore are the very same problems faced by our soldiers today in the War on Terror. These include the problems of corrupt local soldiers, relegious differences and the ago old cultural clash between the conventional military mindset and the unconventional warrior. If one changed the locations names from Vietnam to Iraq the stroeis would be ripped from today's headlines.
The new edition also contains materials which were not in the original edition. It was also enjoyable to read the various stories which conributed elements to the John Wayne movie which was based on the book. The book is well worth your time.

AuthorZone.Com Book ReviewReview Date: 2003-09-02
An unanticipated, barbarous attack carried out by the convicts leaves Jim Wilson believing he alone has survived the vicious, uncalled for shooting of Darton, Harrison and McNelty. The criminals show no regard for the plight, danger or hardship they demand of their victims as they force the two women to walk just ahead of Jim, Griz, Wilson. The determined group again sets out on horseback for their northbound trek. Misadventure, snow, lack of knowledge of the outdoors and even a bear attack or two meets the group at nearly every turn. How, or if, Jim will be able to rescue the two women and get himself safely away from these miscreants who appear determined that nothing or no one will stop them from getting out of the country becomes Wilson's predominant notion.
Writer Waldrip's unquestionable storytelling genius is showcased in the paragraphs of Griz Nightmare. Waldrip adds to his growing list of thrillers with the addition of this exciting tale filled with a fine cast of nicely developed characters, hard hitting dialogue and Waldrip's facility for painting word pictures delineating scenes and scenery. Griz Nightmare is a well crafted tale in which a complex plot twists and turns carrying the reader right to the heart of the hunt with a detailed suspense filled plot. The reader feels anger, revulsion and a sense of revenge for the criminals as we witness their abuse of the kidnap victims, and their disregard for anything other than their own wants, needs and desires. The lack of compassion shown by the criminals is offset by the caring shown mother to daughter to mother, along with Jim Wilson's grim determination that he will avenge his friends deaths and somehow get himself and the two women to freedom.
I liked the addition of both the hand drawn map and actual photos of a hunting camp. They add much to the work.
Good book for a lazy afternoon, I don't recommend after dark, during a storm or when little things go bump in the night.

When you sit down with this one, grab the arms of your easy chair and prepare for excitement.
I am probably offering a biased opinion on this book, as I am a reader of several of R. Leland Waldrip's books, including the original chapter of this book, "The Last Grizzly".
If you have ever seen the Rockies, or wanted to, you will travel there within this book. Waldrip paints the Rocky Mountains with words, as he nearly drives you crazy with mystery and suspense as he carries the reader through one after another of the adventures within this book.
The story portrays the misadventures of a group of sub-human convicts as they head for Canada in an escape attempt. One of the unusual heros in the story is the grizzly itself.
To tell any more details of the story would do the reader a disservice.
I promise you a very long evening of entertainment, as I could not put it down once I began reading.

The plans and designs are honest. They clearly outline how much time it will take, the safety aspect and estimated costs (In british currency). I have noticed that her costs seem a bit low, but it may be the geographic differences. Mostly, I use this on a relativity scale. (This pond is more difficult/costly than that one)
She shows wisdom and experience in her discussion of the use of native plants and introduction of wildlife. Unfortunately, there is a bit of difference between Los Angeles and London native plants, but if you apply the general idea, you can't go wrong.
The practical ideas, like: "Don't put a fountain in a windy area" or "How to hide the pipes in a wall mounted fountain" are essential things to think about once you have it your head that you must have a water element in your yard.
My husband owns a landscape design company and he frequently uses her book to narrow down a client's broad vision. A great garden library addition for a professional or an amatuer!!

Might stop your heart!Review Date: 2006-09-28
Some examples: the 1982 U Cal - Stanford game (where the contest came down to perhaps the craziest final four seconds in history). Some of you may remember... Down 19-17, QB John Elway led his Stanford team into field goal range and Mark Harmon booted it to give Stanford a 20-19 lead with FOUR SECONDS left. The Cardinal celebrated and the band poured onto the field. Get the book to see and hear those final, lateral-filled seconds and the Bears' winning touchdown [or was it?!]
My son-in-law ["Syracuse Forever!!"] will glory in another of Ted's Heart Stoppers: It's 1998 at the Carrier Dome. Virginia Tech and Syracuse battle for a Big East championship and major Bowl possibility. Tech leads 21-6 at the half, but the Orange battle back to within four points (22-26). There, however, Tech's great Defense holds and Syracuse is down to five seconds, 13 yards to go for a TD. QB Donovan McNabb has vomited three times, how can he overcome that and this Tech defense (No. 5 in the country)? Hey, get Ted's book and find out...
Oh, heck, McNabb found TE Stephen Brominski in the end zone and somehow completed the pass that toppled Tech, helped Syracuse to eventually win the Big East title and a date in the '98 Orange Bowl. McNabb is the only player ever to be named Big East player of the year three times.
Ok, that's just two of 116 incredible stories, what a book!
