I got this book off of half.com. I would recommend this book for all the Special Ed Schools to have. I am sending out letters hoping to talk to Schools in are County about getting more Athletes. Are County has mostly older Athletes. This is one book I would show them.

I am a Special Olympian and have been for 17 years. This book is totally amazing. I recommend this book to anyone with a mental or physical challenge. The families with a challenged person in their family will totally be in awe after they read this book. I am also a global messenger for Special Olympics. I have gained self-esteem because of Special Olympics. Whatever I do in Special Olympics, I know my family is behind me 100%.

This book is one of the most enjoying books I have had the priviledge of reading. I am saying this as a parent whose son Chad Kocabinski is one of the featured athletes. He is the young man talked about in the equestrian events section.

I and my wife will have this book forever as a living memorial to our son who passed away from cancer on the 23rd of December 2000. The way the author did her interviews and the way the book has been written and it's content is something that makes us to be very proud. We had it on display at the funeral home as a tribute to not only him, but to Special Olympics as a whole.

As a matter of fact, we would like to get 8 more copies of this book to place in each one of the schools in our community in his memory.

I have used other books in this series and they never dissappoint. There is far more here than you can do in any one vacation, but I like it for the full overview that you get of the entire state. Don't expect a lot of maps and directions, but do expect some neat "insider" tips and different travel recomendations.

Having only been to Idaho three times (once for 10 minutes!) I can say that this book will undoubtedly help me plan my next much longer excursion to the great state of Idaho. The chapters cover sections of the state with details on various cities, what to do, where to eat, etc., all of which will be helpful. As with any book on this subject, some items may be out of date even as the book is printed, but I trust that the author's references to restaurants and lodging are dependable. Having looked at other books on Idaho, this one not only covers the hidden gems, I think it covers all the unhidden gems this state has to offer. Though I already admitted I'm no expert on Idaho, I found this book to be comprehensive enough for someone planning a two-week trip to explore this corner of the US.

This book is helpful. There are not a lot of Idaho-specific guidebooks, and this one is pretty comprehensive. One drawback is that it does not have any pictures. Idaho has some beautiful wilderness areas and a few pictures would greatly enhance this book.

This book was a fabulous guide to planning a family vacation. As it turned out, we followed a similar path as the one described in the book --across Idaho to Yellowstone. Advance plans included sites described in this book, and when we added activities, we always checked with the book first. It was never wrong. Using this book helped make our family trip (with three teenagers!) a fun adventure. Thanks Richard Harris for all your good research and tips!

As a fourth generation Coloradan, I admit to having a natural skepticism whenever I initially feast my eyes upon a photography book that, by its title, is intended to 'capture' the beauty, majesty and unique qualities of the Rockies. My close attachment to the Rocky Mountains makes me sometimes feel that most photographers will fall short. WRONG assumption! I'm delighted to report that Sue Neider has successfully captured the heart and soul of the Colorado Rockies in her latest book in honest, forthright, unique and spectacular images. 'High Country: Touring he Colorado Rockies' absolutely affected me as I moved from page to page---and made me feel as though Ms. Neider must have spent her life out here, which I've learned is not the case. Her latest book was like having a personalized guided tour of the Rockies and I recommend it 100% to readers living anywhere---including others like me who have spent their entire lives embracing mountains and scenery in the Rocky Mountains region. Terrific viewing, excellent text, and an experience I will revisit over and over. This is a book that I am proud to own!

Three years ago, Susan Neider's photographic and literary guide to the Colorado Plateau, Color Country, moved me to write a review on this site in the hope that others would discover her work as well. Her new guide to the Colorado Rockies, High Country, proves that Color Country was no quirk. If there could remain any doubt from the choice and intensity of her photographs that Neider's accomplishment is to understand the landscape and what that means to the human experience, here's how she, in a few words, shows that she gets it: "The peaks are here," she says of the surroundings, "so are the valleys. So is the range of vision that draws me away from an intense and restless inner self." And that's it. Neider's descriptions, advice, and photos all reflect a passion rarely found in guidebooks. Those who want more than a passingly pleasant experience with the places Neider visits would take her, or at least her books, along.

Another winner!

I tend to carry a lot of books when I travel, so I'm careful about what I pack. But Neider's guides are essential travel gear and take the place of a lot of other books I might have to take along. I learned this when she published Color Country a few years ago and wore out my first copy traipsing around Utah with it, planning trips and choosing places to visit. Now she's done the same thing, in spades, for Colorado with High Country and it's a welcome addition to my travel library, too. I'm a nut about geology, but a lot of what is written is hard to read. But Neider's a first-rate explainer and provides just what you need to understand the landscape. And then there are her pictures. Direct, clean and engaging, the same clarity evident in her writing shines through in her photographs. If they weren't so inspirational I'd be tempted to put my own camera away, knowing I'll never get the same feeling of a place she manages to capture so well. Her photo tips keep me shooting, though. I think, as with her first book, I'll be giving a lot of copies of this one to friends who are traveling west.
Brava, Neider, once again!

This is an excellent and actionable guidebook. It introduces aspects of area history, geology animal and plant life in an accessable format. Plenty of specifics are provided to help you find the exact place being discussed, and you are warned in advance how long or hard the hike will be.
This is the only regional guidebook I have found that divides the area along its prominent geologic areas, and discusses the topology, history, flora and fauna from that perspective.
It took me a little effort to get oriented, but with the help of my local topo map book, I was soon understanding in greater depth the beautiful area in which I live. I love to hike and trout fish, and this book is helping me plan my outings. This Sunday, you will find me fishing on Spillcorn Creek.

The book includes not only the well-known places but also out-of-the-way, obscure sites well worth a visit. The maps are a plus. If only I had this guide when I lived in North Carolina!

There are many books about the AT, but this one is superb for it's detail and attention to partial sections for hiking. Can be used for thru hiking as well. Gives day and overnight parking details, profile of terrain, degree of difficulty, recommended direction, water and shelter locations, topo maps, mileage etc. Everything that a hiker needs!! Excellent.

Review Date: 2007-04-04
I have 2 books in this series, and have frequently used photocopied pages from them on my AT section hikes. I never needed to buy the AMC versions of the maps since comprehensive maps are provided within this book, along with mileage charts for road crossings, springs, campsites, landmarks, etc. for every section of the Trail.

Although this book is obviously geared for the day-hiker or overnighter, it has also come in handy on my longer hikes. And the writers have narrowed down every section into either 1- or 2-day hikes, along with directions to the trailheads (even in the remote 100-Mile Wilderness section in Maine!), proving that the AT can be enjoyed by casual hikers as well as hardcore mile-crunchers.

Cons: This book, and the others in the series, is seriously due for an updated edition. Lots has changed along the trail even in 8 years. (carrying up-to-date pages from the ALDHA Thru-Hikers' Companion is necessary to have the full info). Also, the maps are two-color, making certain features hard to read, i.e. roads are the same color as elevation markings.

Well worth the money...

Review Date: 2005-08-30
PLEASE NOTE: THERE are NOT 170 hikes in the book. The whole series must contain that many.

I own 3 books in this series. The Southern Appalachian, the Virginias, and the Mid-Atlantic States guide. I have found these books to be a great aid in planning hikes, especially 2-3 day backpacking trips. Since most of these hikes are either one-way or round trip (as opposed to circuit hikes) you either need to have two cars or plan on seeing the same sites twice. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but other books have better circuit hikes.

This series IS very informative, not only with regards to the actually hike, but also the history both natural and otherwise of the area you are hiking in.

I have only done a few of the hikes in the Mid-Atlantic Guide, all of which have been out and back day hikes, and this book has been very informative during these hikes. The maps could be a little better, as they are topographocal maps with a green line for the trail.. They are adequate, but I've seen better.

All 41 hikes come with a description, a map, an elevation profile, and an itinerary, as well as various other information.

When planning for a hike I do tend to use this book in conjunction with other books, but I usually take this book (or copies of the pages) on the actual hike itself. The fact that the pages are so small allows for easier handling and storage of the laminated pages during the trip.

So if you enjoy hiking and are near the AT while in PA, you may want to take a look at this book. It is well worth the money.

Must-have for scout leaders / Excellent for planning hikes

It is clear that these authors were not kidding when they stated that they have a love affair with the Appalachian Trail. The descriptions not only cover all you need to know to be prepared to hike a certain section, but there's lots of history and local color as well.

I've used this book successfully to plan hikes for a youth group. I must admit I disregarded the advice that a certain section (Knife's Edge) was not for those suffering from vertigo and sure enough, the group of kids I took on this section included one who suffered severely from fear of heights. But the kids worked together to get through that section and all was very well in the end.

This book is by no means dry. Sprinkled here and there are humorous passages, like the classification of vampire rocks versus jumping rocks. A pollution-damaged section is described as "shaved clean."

An experienced hiker who has decided to hike section-hike or day-hike the trail between Harper's Ferry and the New York / Connecticut state line needs no other guide. I also recommend this book for the library of every youth group, particularly scouts, in this geographic area that would (or should) plan hiking outings as part of their yearly plans.

Having hiked extensively in the Carolina Mountains for 40 years, I open new trail guides with a weary skepticism. With this book my skepticism was unjustified. Ms. Bernstein's book does not attempt to be exhaustive, but it covers a wide variety of trails in two states. In it, you will find a trail for any hiker in any season of the year.

The trail descriptions (at least for the 35 or so I have hiked) strike a nice balance between length and detail with no sacrifice of relevant accuracy. The maps are uncluttered and well integrated with the text.

Now I can take a hike here!

This is an easy to use guide to some great hikes here in the Western Carolinas. I live here and hike with a club. Until now, I've usually been following the leader and haven't really known what the hike "looked like" or where exactly I was going. I don't have great map reading skills and I don't use a GPS. In fact, I'm a person who couldn't take my relatives and friends from out of town on a moderate hike here in the Carolina mountains. And I'm not the only one with that problem. But that will change. For each hike, the book provides detailed driving directions and a simple map. For the actual hikes, there are very clear trail maps with text that describes exactly what I'll see along the way, shows which path to take at each intersection and notes what landmarks I'll see along the trail. I did a 7 mile hike this weekend using the book and felt totally confident. It was a new experience to not only complete the hike but also to know exactly what it had encompassed. Happy Trails.

This pocket guidebook to the best day hikes in the Carolina mountains deserves the highest praise. Each entry provides detailed, straightforward directions for each hike, accompanied by clearly presented maps and pictures of landmarks. While the book offers valuable resources for experienced hikers, it would also be an excellent choice to give to a friend who may be just beginning to explore the outdoors, as the introductory material explains the essentials of hiking safety and includes a checklist of necessary equipment. The lively essays placing local points of interest in their historical contexts are another major strength of this guidebook. I would never have guessed, for example, that the North Carolina and Georgia state militias fought a battle over the boundary between the two states--fifty years before the Civil War (see page 145). Milestone Press should also consider producing mp3 audio narrations of the hikes and the accompanying essays to enjoy while on the trail.

The mountains of the Carolinas are an embarassment of riches for hikers, with literally thousands of miles of trails. The problem has been choosing the most interesting hikes. There are several trail guides, but unless you are willing to spend a lot of time studying maps to create your own circular route, you'll be stuck hiking in and out on the same trail. Hiking the Carolina Mountains solves that problem by providing details of 57 hikes, most of which include loops. The book is also the first that I've seen that covers areas such as upland South Carolina and DuPont State Forest in North Carolina. Hiking the Carolina Mountains also provides detailed information on how to drive to the trailhead, interesting sidelights on the history of the area, and readable maps, all of which are usually missing from trail guides.

This is the book need to hike the Carolina mountains.

While Harry Medved is clearly a movie maven, it isn't necessary for you to be one in order to appreciate what his great guidebook has to offer. For folks who live in California, there will be lots of those "oh yeah, I remember that" moments when Medved explains where a particular scene in a movie was filmed, like the carousel scene in "The Sting" for example (Santa Monica Pier.) But Medved goes far beyond the beaten track, recalling scenes from "Grapes of Wrath" on the Needles Bridge, and even making a stop north of Santa Barbara to El Capitan State Beach for "The Frisco Kid." The many places that are discussed are generally interesting in and of themselves, Hollywood aside. I certainly wasn't familiar with all the films mentioned here, especially the older ones, but the descriptions of the various destination points, supported by hand drawn maps and photographs, have piqued my interest to get out and explore some of the more obscure and overlooked spots around our state.

First of all my 5 and 6 year old started looking at this book and it was hard to get it back from them as they were so charmed by the pictures. They have been playing in the snow and hounding me to help ever since.

Second of All I lived in Nunavut for 9 years and took lessons in igloo building from Inuit elders. I also worked with elders and teachers to create a unit on igloo building for students and teachers. I learned to make a half presentable igloo in this process! I can say with a modicum of expertise that many books on the subject are complete flops but not this one.

This book is the real deal. The pictures are great and the text is as well. A fantastic and charming tutorial for playing in the snow. First rate.

What a truly delightful book describing both the science and the frivolity of snow structures. Dr. Why's excellent detail and evident excitement about the subject lend a depth to a subject all those exposed to the colder climes will enjoy. Make those NOT in a snow-filled area jealous... Great book for all ages and abilities!
