the best of the best in the business

If there was any doubt that Garrity is the best golf writer in the business, this anthology should dispel it. Much of his most memorable work is here, from the 2000 article that ignited the Vijay Singh cheating controversy, to the 2003 close-quarters look at the tumultuous marriage of John and Sherrie Daly, to more recent, outstanding pieces on Tiger Woods and Johnny Miller. (Each seems to be reworked and/or lengthened from its original SI form.) Between the profiles are offbeat pieces on, for example, driving ranges and golf schools-- the kind of pieces that open up the seams of the recreational game and, with empathy and wit, explore its grip on everyday addict-players. In all, this is the kind of book that's so approachable and engaging that you're almost surprised when you look up from it and say, Wow-- it's hard to imagine anybody doing a better job writing on this subject than this guy does.

An Exceptional Golf Writer Equals an Exceptional Golf Anthology

Review Date: 2008-10-05
A fine, very fine, anthology of golf writing. Garrity is one of the best and it only follows that a collection of his stories would be one of the best as well.

Singling out the best of the pieces in this book proves to be very difficult. There are exceptional pieces on the "usual suspects," Tiger, Nicklaus, Palmer, and others. But there are exceptional pieces on Tom Watson, Frank Stranahan, the man who was "muscled out of the Masters" and many, many others.

There are lots of golf anthologies that are read and passed along. This is one golf anthology that will be read and put on the shelf. It is a keeper. Truly a keeper.

Great Gift Book

This book is beautifully written and illustrated. I don't know how the graphics are done but they look three dimensional. It's a story of how the angels played the game of golf on the earth and accidentally leave a club which leads to the creation of golf on earth. I've bought copies for both of my grandchildren and they love it. I recommend it.

A Magical Story about Golf -- and Life!

Review Date: 2003-09-26
There are two kinds of inventiveness at work in this magical tale of old Scotsman Mully MacTavish who learns of golf from the angels and goes on to teach mankind the joy of this sport.

Author Chaz Henry has created 3-D figures to bring alive a tale that takes the reader from earth to heaven and back again as Mully discovers and refines the game (complete with ball and hole) so that humanity can savor its challenges and mysteries.

The mystery is the second part of the charm in this book, for golf is shown to be "more than a game, much more than a walk" as people discover the beauties of nature outside themselves and the mysteries of their own hearts as they revel in the sport.

Would that this book had been written when my children first learned golf years ago! But now its pleasures await a new generation.

It would be a joy to see this book adapted into a film version or even a television series to enthrall young and old alike!

Anyone who loves the game of golf knew it had to be true -- golf came from the heavens. This book is an excellent light reading storybook. An endearing tale of the early beginnings of golf on earth. A truly unique gift for the young and young at heart on your list. A beautiful book with awesome graphics and an introduction to Old Mully MacTavish, a character I hope we hear more from. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Sleeping Bear Press has done it again-- a great read from Don Wade who combines great, informed golf knowledge with a spy/intelligence thriller.

I read much golf fiction and non-fiction, and this is defintely at the top of the leader board. As others have commented, one doesn't have to be into golf nor suspense to like this one.

It twists and turns and keeps one attached to seeing it thru, that the whole Peter Brooks thing will end up.

I'm convinced Peter Brooks is truly Nick Faldo. Read this one!

Not just for golfers

Not being a golfer I thought this book would leave me bored. But I was wrong. It has so much going for it, murder, espionage, a little bit of sex and some very believable characters who I cared about. The relationship and inside workings of the CIA, MI6 and the IRA is enlightening. As for golf, I loved reading about how the TV puts on a golf tournament. Even the golf part helped to explain the intellectual side of the game. Most enjoyable.

I'm generally too distracted to read, but I was glued to this book. The author integrates an obviously advanced knowledge of golf and media production into a gripping story. The book would fascinate a serious golfer without losing the interest of a non-golfer.

The humor is sophisticated and understated as is the romance and the political questions the book raises. It is a perfect combination - easy to read ... and intelligent.

A very comprehensive review and rating of 400+ golf courses from the Colonial country club to the Falfurrias,Tx muni!! If you've ever played a round of golf in Texs, your course is probably listed and rated. Excellent descriptions of the top 300.A few minor errors like calling Hole No.1 of the Woodlands TPC No.13, and a photo of a hole on Portland's Northshore CC which isn't there. But a big bang for your $$$$$ , and a true collector's item, or coffee table book.

Beautiful and comprehensive.

Moretti's Book is a clear, detailed approach to the shortgame and you don't have to be a Rocket Scientist to understand it. It is extremely well written and I guarantee it will help any level of golfer improve his short game. Along with reading the book I can also offer firsthand testimony that the man knows what he's talking about, since I recently attended his Academy of Golf Dynamics School. I've witnessed his shortgame concepts firsthand. Take the advice of a Golf Instruction Nut and Buy This Book. You won't regret the purchase.

I have read many golf books, but this one makes things simple and easy to understand. Focusing on the short game (about 70% of your score), Moretti teaches a quick, easy to implement, short game swing that will lower your scores. The "Chipping" section is worth the price of the book alone. The shots learned from the book probably save me 5 to 10 shots per round. Moretti's book added new shots to my game and gave me confidence from 100 yards and in.

A very good friend of mine came by my house a few hours after we had played together. I had shot my usual 100+. He rang the door bell, handed me Turn Three Shots Into Two and said "Read this." I admit my short game is awful, but I never thought a book could actually help me. Well, I was wrong. The next time out I shot 94, which is not great, but my chipping and putting were better. I may never be very good, but I now think I can get better. Thank you Bill Moretti for the simple and easy-to-understand advice.

I was very surprised at the content of this book. I honestly thought this would be another ho-hum, boring book, going over the mechanics of good swing, chipping, etc. To my surprise, the book turned out to be totally different than what I expected.

More than anything else, I think this book is a source of motivation--even inspiration. The author explains his own training via his very tough taskmaster, Buck White. I think the author successfully allows some of these tough lessons to rub-off on the reader.

Very readable, and very enjoyable as well!

For us average golfers the tips are worth 5 strokes a game. I now understand more about the mechanics of the game after reading Harvey's books, than from all the instruction tips in monthly golf magazines. An entertaining and helpful book for weekend golfers. A must read for young and new golfers. Great for both men and women.

Mr. Penick Encourages & Guides Without Being Technical
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-23
This book provides the best of Penick's great anecdotes. He has so many golf related stories from his days of teaching, coaching, and assisting, and each one sheds a new perspective on this timeless game. His best contribution to golf writing is his ability to provide clear visuals in association with sound golfing principles. He doesn't leave the reading wondering how to implement an idea, but puts it in concrete terms by providing examples from his own life as well as the people he coached. Apart from the wonderful golf tips, this is just a plain good read, which borders on an autobiography. If you love the sport and you love life, you will truly enjoy this book.

The way Gary Players illustrates the Game anyone from Beginner on up can learn Golf. It is sad that it is no longer a published or revised book. Hopefully Gary Player would review it and update it. Go Gary Player Great Job.

A terrific book that features striking photographs of current PGA Tour players and players dating back to the mid-19th century. Extremely well-written and informative, this book really gives you an overview of golf history through the descriptions of the 50 greatest players and their importance to the game of golf. The book includes a great chapter on Tiger Wood's mental abilities.

Review Date: 2002-10-12
The selection of the top 50 golfers is thought-provoking, particularly with Tiger Woods selected above Jack Nicklaus as No. 1. This book really does celebrate the greatest golfers in history and provides detailed information on each one. The chapters on Tiger and the Palmer/Player/Nicklaus era are extremely informative and well-written. The photography and graphic presentation are exceptional, from the modern color photos to some great black-and-white shots that date to the 19th century. A great addition to anyone's golf library, from the expert to the casual fan.

I've found my "Jewel in the Desert" as far as mental golf instruction. I've played professional golf on the mini-tours for 3 years. I knew there was something missing from my game. I would play "timid and restricted" in tournaments, but would play great with my friends at home. After listening to the tapes, and working with Mike Allen I've been able to play "loose and fearless" by "Accessing the Zone" whenever I want!! Thank you for making these tapes.

I found the techniques used in these recordings to align mind and body very effective. Simply put, they work, and can be applied to other aspects of one's life than just the game of golf. I've shared them with golfing friends who have also reported similar reactions. Heartily recommended.
