I bought this book for my husband, who always seems to be upset at his game. We both ended up reading it and laughing at the insight David Divot has into all the nuances of "our" game. The author knowingly addresses all angles of why to quit, including maintaning sanity, and saving lots of time and money, but ends up reaffirming our determination to prove him wrong and continue to love the game.

This book is hilarious, can be read in a sitting or two, and is written with a dry, sarcastic wit that obviously comes from someone who is a real golfer. It's a great present to send along with a birthday card for any friend who has been less than perfect off the tee.

A humorous and clever analysis of the "affliction" of golf and the necessary steps for the "cure". Ordered a couple to send to my golfing brothers for Christmas.

I laughed out loud reading this book and its witty advice for the golf-afflicted. David Divot makes the little frustrations golfers endure to improve their game a source of pure comedy. This is a perfect gift for all of your golf plagued friends.

If you, like me, are concerned about what is happening to golf and feel that technology has gone too far, then this book is a "Must".

The most important golf book now in publication.

This is nothing less than the most important book on the game of golf now in print. It is the most important golf book of the last 25 years, and is probably the most important golf book since the writing of C. B. Macdonald, Bernard Darwin and even Bob Jones.
It is not an elegant book; others, including Shackelford himself have written books that are far more beautiful in terms of lavish publications. But the comparisons that have been made between this book and Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" are apt. This book is a call to arms in the golf technology arms race.
These are direct, pithy, clear-eyed essays that will provoke any reader to challenge about half of what is becoming the accepted state of affairs in the world of golf.
You cannot be a serious-minded student of the game of golf in the 21st Century without reading, and indeed studying, this book.

An update on a hot topic

The subjects of technology, design, and price in golf have been with us for a long while (perhaps longer than most realize), but few books tackle them head on. Here, Geoff Shackelford points out where not only he but many professional tour players, course architects, and even voices from the past believe things have gotten off track.

For anyone who has lost interest in golf on TV, is tired of 6 hours rounds at even "high-end" public facilities, and would love to know why exactly the latest and greatest in driver technology "just keeps getting better" (and more expensive) when, supposedly, the USGA put a roof on it, you will want to read this.

On a final note, while much of the information has been updated for this revised edition, much of the writing will be very familiar to those who regularly follow Geoff Shackelford's articles. First time readers will get much more out it.

Eye-opening and inspiring.

Finally someone is saying exactly what needs to be said about the current state of golf. "The Future of Golf" opened my eyes to the problems the game is now facing; problems that so many are trying to cover up. As a golf lover I am horrified at the direction the game is going and this book nailed what these problems are, and what needs to be done to fix them.

This is probably Shackelford's best work, as well as his most important, and I'm afraid it will not be recognized as such because of its controversial nature. If this book does not reach an enormous audience it will be an absolute tragedy. I urge everyone who cares about the game of golf and our great courses to read "The Future of Golf". One way or another I am going to get a copy into the hands of every golfer I know. We must start wherever we can and take back the game of golf before it's too late.

Let's see, you take one caddy from New Zealand who dropped out of high school, add an unknown business / political writer from New Zealand and you get one of the most powerful sports psychology books ever written. Yeah, that makes sense.

I don't know what I was expecting when I bought the book, but I certainly was not expecting to be writing a tribute.

I was stunned not only at the content but also the delivery. Although this book is written in a way to be assimilated by just about anyone, the value of the content in this book will be appreciated more by those who understand the importance and the difficulty of being able to construct the condition of lasing mental activities needed to ensure the success of each shot under tournament pressure.

I suppose that a downside might be that those who are not already familiar with the value of meditation (essentially those who would stand to benefit the most from this book) could easily overlook some of the most important, but subtle, threads in the focus of this work. So, for the highest level of reader satisfaction, I would strongly endorse: a love of golf, an appreciation for the benefits of meditation and a careful reading of this book...in that order.

Bought two copies, one for the library and one for the car. The definitive "must have" book for playing golf in California. The course descriptions are the best and most complete I've come across, mostly right on, and I particularly enjoyed Bob Fagan's Lists.

This book has easy to read and contains up-to-date information and course reviews from golf courses in California, Las Vegas and Reno. I especially like Bob Fagan's Book of Lists--although I don't necessarily agree with some of his picks. I also found the "opinion" portion of the course reviews not only entertaining but informative, too. The size of the book is perfect for traveling; and it fits in my golf bag.

i have a lot of books on golf courses & golf course design, and i think this one may be my favorite. it is well written, in a friendly, informal style that provides plenty of information and insight into the work of one of the world's most famous course designers. the pictures are beautiful and mostly large enough to show sufficient detail to make them interesting. i'd definitely recommend it.

Tom Fazio is one of the best golf course designers of all time. Because I am from the Philadelphia area, I am not privileged to play as many of his courses as I would like. When you first pick up this book, you might falsely believe it is nothing more than a picture book. Don't be fooled though. Fazio provides some interesting insight into why he chose to sculpt his courses the way he did. Many golf enthusiasts might recognize Fazio's name from courses they've played, but he has also done some masterful redesigns as well including the recent improvements to Augusta National.
Yes, the pictures add another dimension to the book, but the fact that it is an easy read and one that provides great insight is what brings this book to another level.
I highly recommended this book not only for golfers but for those who enjoy the aesthetics of a golf course as well.

If you play golf, you must have this book. I am lucky enough to work at a Fazio course (Victoria National - Indiana) and so naturally this book was special to me.

It is enjoyable to look at as well as interesting to read.

Anyone who plays or wishes they could play will HAVE to have this book.

Unlike most books destined for the coffee table, Fazio transends the swing arc to a beautiful look at the vision of the the ulimate playing field- the golf course. With a wonderful perspective of design, the challange of the game starts with the challange of the course. The pictures are beautiful beyond description but the story, passion and the theory are even more great. Tom Fazio has taken his agressiveness from the tour and put it to the turf. This is a wonderful book for the golf enthusiast!

This is a solid book to help reinforce lessons based upon Jim McLean's 8 Step Swing. This covers the full swing down to putting. A brief introduction followed by simple illustrations and explanations help the student understand the necessary movements. Many of the drills are covered by websites and monthly golf magazine articles; however, this is a compendium of drills to help any level of golfer.

Overall, this is a book that complements conventional golf techniques.

One may also use it to aid a beginning golfer - a must for all golfers, especially instructors.

To change a swing you've got to groove it. To do that, you need a drill. Here is a book of over 100 of them, from a full-swing to short game, to alignment and warmup.

McClain does a great job here, and the illustrations are helpful. Excellent helps for correcting a slice and increasing club head speed.

This book is chock-full of useful information at any stage of the golf timeline a parent or player might be in. It's nice to have one book that you can continually reference to and not have to buy two or three books. The Golf Guide has skills and drills for the player but also gives parents and players a big picture for a career in golf as a player and/or at a golf course. I bought it for my son and I look forward to having both of us use this book as a reference tool.

Don't be fooled by the title! In Rick Graves book "Golf Happens", golf doesn't just happen, it comes alive with antedotes, insight and instruction. While I found the author's insights on the trials and tribulations of running a private golf club facinating reading, I was equally impressed by the golf instruction. Since reading Rick Graves' book I dropped my handicap from a 14 to a 9 following a couple of his tips. This alone makes it a great buy. I'd like to see him do a guest spot on the Golf Channel. It would be a great show. Get the book. It's worth the time.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a new golfer and I found this book very informative. It provides the reader the history of the game. It also provides information and ideas to help your game. It has drills and techniques the reader can use to better their individual enjoyment and skill of the game. Much of the ideas are presented in a humorous way which helps in the readers retention. The author also shares some individual stories about when he was a golf club pro which are very entertaining as well as informative. I highly recommend this book. It is quick and worthwhile read!
