Not for recreational reading
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-28
This book is part of a series of nine books that look at various aspects of ancient technology. The book I acquired was from the 1972 edition, and may be different from other editions. This one has three hefty chapters: Copper; Tin and Bronze, Antimony and Arsenic; and The Early Story of Iron. Each chapter looks at ores, mining, trade, smelting, nomenclature, and application. Plus, anything else relative to the subject is certain to be thrown in, such as history, impurities, discovery, etc.

The book goes into a depth that will leave the casual reader breathless. Indeed, it is not intended for recreational reading, but instead is intended to give the reader an in-depth understanding of the subject. So, if you are interested in reading about the ancient working of metals, then I very highly recommend this book to you.

A scholarly, academic analysis
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-13
Edited by Amihai Mazara (Professor of Archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Studies In The Archaeology Of The Iron Age In Israel And Jordan is an impressive compendium of scholarly, academic analysis. This scholarly text is divided into three parts: Settlement Patterns and Landscape Archaeology; Temples, Cult and Iconography; and Aspects of Material Culture. Occasional black-and-white illustrations and photographs of artifacts dot the serious, thoughtful, and heavily researched text. The contributors surveying spatial archaeology and settlement patterns include Adam Zertal (Samaria), Avi Ofer (Judah), Gunnar Lehmann (the Akko Plain), and Shimon Gibson (the Hill country). Religion and iconography are surveyed by Avraham Brian and Ze'ev Herzog (temples at Dan and Arad), Raz Kletter and Kay Prag (clay figurines and other cult objects), Tallay Ornan (seals and pendants portraying Ishtar), and Norma Franklin (iconography of the wall relief in Room V at Sargon's Palace in Khorsabad), Amihai Mazar (Iron Age II Beth Shean), Margreet Steiner (urban development in Jerusalem during Iron Age II), Piotr Beinkowski and Leonie Sedman (Busayra, the capital of Edom). Studies In The Archaeology Of The Iron Age In Israel And Jordan is a core addition for any academic and archaeological reference collection devoted to ancient history in the Middle East.

I purchase iron-on transfer books for the Comfort Blanket Ministry of St. Ferdinand Church. It is a blessing that such books are still available - we use these iron-ons for painting and marker coloring which ultimately become squares in our ministry's beautiful blankets. Keep selling these kinds of books, we'll keep buying them! This book is one of our very favorites!

LOST TREASURE

For anyone interested in D&D this is a castle you must have. It's design is ingenious but not ridiculous as some of the TSR/Wizards castles have been. It's uses are varied, I enjoy eclectically combining aspects of different games so my players are never really familiar with anything I do. I've had one group invade it in one scenario and I defended from it in a different scenario. And if you're at all into Lord Of The Rings you'll love the history of the place gleaned from the Silmarilion, Hobbit and the Trilogy.

Trent Jones' story of his years as a teacher in the tiny one-room school in Terlingua, Texas is inspiring. It tells of Jones' dedication to his students and his efforts to obtain state accreditation for the tiny school in isolated far West Texas.

I really like the fact that I can read along with my Audible subscription. I downloaded my purchased copy of "The Three Musketeers" audiobook, read by Michael York, and loaded it onto my Creative Muvo. Then I can listen and read at the same time.

I like the fact that I can turn to any chapter I wish. It saves me time as compared with turning pages one by one or searching.

tide of plastic

I've heard this product described as Tide of Plastic...and it is very true. This game comes with a huge number of litle plastic pieces. Luckily, they are all really well done. This is a fun game to play. Set up for a normal game is about 30 minutes and the games themselves last from one to two hours. If you're looking for a quick pick up and play game, this really isn't it. Strategy is a huge part of how you set up your pieces, so that is why setup is so long. As you become more familiar with each unit's strengths and weaknesses, setup time will probably be cut in half. One thing to note is that many of the basic scenarios that come with the game seem to be too one sided, with one of the armies seemingly unable to win, based on how the mission is made. I don't really have a problem with this, it seems to make the historical mission more accurate in my opinion. Tide of Iron is a super fun war game and its play mechanics are more accessible than more hardcore games in the genre. I recommend it.
