an excellent look at archetype/poetics as reference to life

John Clarke has has gone night-swimming with the myths of the ages...he provides us with absolutely useful and inspiring notions of the mysteries of our archetypal past...how they relate to our present condition and how they ultimately define us as beings in progress. This work provides crucial insight into the language of possibility and senseless pathologizing which would interest psychologists, poets, priests, politicians, medical doctors, and particularly theoretical physicists. This is a work of unimaginable richness and possibility. John Clarke was a visionary the likes of which I have not seen or heard of in our time. --Mark Bottita

Every once in a while, you may find an excellent text in a book and sometimes an excellent black and white photo album; but rarely such a passionate blending of the two as From Forge & Anvil. This is a love story of a man, a woman, an artisan blacksmith, cowboy & rancher, and The Texas Hill Country nestled in the pristine countryside of the Guadalup River of Texas. This is a real coffe top keepsake for young and old, filled with human interest, humor and intriguing Texas Ranching History. Stan L. Cobbs, Kerrville, TX

Hope springs from the seemingly banal

This collection of letters can be put down and taken up at any point without losing the thread. In that sense it is almost suitable for bathroom reading. However, the human rights context in which the letters are exchanged make this a special kind of book. When Marina's father is serving seven years in the gulag, her mother Lera discovers a humble post card in her mailbox: "Lera stood paralyzed in front of her door; it seemed a miracle that someone living in England could write to her daughter, that this postcard could have penetrated her isolation. It was like seeing an angel." (pages xx-xxi) An exchange of some 15 years results, as letters, books, chocolates and clothing cross the Iron Curtain, despite constant KGB surveillance.

The book is published with the help of Amnesty International, through which, as the book's end matter explains, "there are many ways you can protect individuals at risk or violations of their human rights--including prisoners of conscience . . . One simple but effective way to take action, at the heart of Amnesty International's work, is writing letters. Letters do make a difference: whether they bring hope and support to prisoners of conscience and their families, or put pressure on governments and countries to change their policies. As Lera said: `It is difficult to explain how greatly our life changed after that first post card. I never felt lonely any more...Harold and Olive's letters changed my life--they gave me hope.'

Not for light reading, but if you really want to know, it's all spelled out in this book. Everything from the finds themselves, catologued very clearly, to conclusions based on present-day related cultures. Including materials, tattoos, objects, and plants included in burials, this book is a wonderful resource on the incredibly rich culture of the Pazyryk people.

The Tailor's Guide to Early Medieval Clothing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-13
Quite possibly one of -the best- instructional guides to early iron age through early medieval clothing in the Germanic region. It is by no means exhaustive, but it does contain explanations of respective costume, a variety of examples for both men and women through various ages, pictured sources where possible, as well as detailed cutting and sewing instructions for those feeling so inclined. For anyone looking to make historically accurate clothing, this is an excellent place to begin.

Hopefully used bookstores will remain in business, unlike music stores. When the bookstores go under, we're in trouble, because then we can only read current material. Which isn't all that great, to be honest.

This is a very good book - if you are lucky enough to find a copy and wish to read and think about real questions this book may be for you. I feel very grateful to the author for this work.

Charles Upton challenges Robert Bly's interpretation of the Grimm's fairly tale Iron John, an interpretation which had a strong impact on a generation of confused men looking for answers about what it means to be a man. Upton's critique draws from the perspective of the traditionalist school of writers - notably the French metaphysician Rene Guenon - and presents a profound alternative reading of the fairy tale in which the question of what it means to be a man is eclipsed by the greater question of what it means to be truly human.

Upton writes: '...Bly states that his intention is to talk about male initiation alone. My intention is to try and situate this initiation in its greater context, that of the attainment of the fully human state.'
