This is a great analysis and design book in tall buildings. You will find plenty of examples and discussions. Although the book does not get deep into some of the advanced topics, it is still a great source for structural engineers.

It is a very practical book containg material which will be useful to those engaged in the design of tall buildings. The unique thing about this book is the fact Taranath has given details of many important tall buildings, which will guide us before choosing a framework for the new building. He also explains how a structural system can be chosen. It has numerous practical examples. The code clauses are clearly explained. The Design for Wind and Earthquake are given in a nice manner with reference to latest codes of practices. His explanations are very easy to understand. Lateral and gravity systems for steel, concrete and composite constructions are given with numerous drawings in seperate chapters. Analysis techniques are given in an easy to understand fashion with less mathematical complexity. Design methods are also given. Discussion on related items such as damping and cladding systems,Foundation design, seismic design of Diaphragm ,etc. are also included. The data on Structural quantities will be a boon to those who want to have a preliminary estimate of the building, they are going to design. In all, it is a book worth buying and will serve as a reference for a long time. With this book and a proper software, we can design any tall building with ease.

Viking to Victorian is a very distinctive book written by Olaf Engvig, a NORWEGIAN-AMERICAN mariner/ship restorer/maritime researcher who is a descendant of the legendary Vikings. From his practical experience and academic research, Engvig is convinced that ancient Viking ships built of iron and wood were sturdy enough to survive long voyages in rough seas. So he decided to test and prove his theory - by restoring an old Viking longship and sailing it in the open seas with his teenaged daughter, without the aid of modern instruments!
ENGVIG argued that the use of iron and superior riveting in the construction of old Viking ships were key to the construction of strong, sturdy sea vessels, at the same time lamenting the lack of research and emphasis on the use of iron in modern ships. In light of this thesis, it is interesting to note that there is an hypothesis that the ill-fated Titanic sank because of sub-par riveting during its construction.
The book has an unique blend of research and story-telling; history and adventure - making it a most interesting read that appeals to historians, researchers as well as the casual reader. This makes it a good reference book in one's library or an interesting read on one's coffee table. Highly recommended!

Olaf Engvig's beautiful book "Viking to Victorian" does a very good job
combining an academically sound discussion on the use of iron in ship
building with exciting chronicles of the author's many voyages in historic
boats. One of the highlights of the book is his exciting description of how he crossed the North Sea without map and compass in an open 120 year old boat similar to the ones the Vikings used. This is also a very interesting book in light of the ongoing discussion about Titanic's rivets. The book is filled with beautiful pictures in color and black-and-white, and therefore also makes a great gift for anyone interested in maritime history or metallurgy. Recommended!

Olaf Engvig's Viking to Victorian: Exploring the Use of Iron in Ship Building is a very surprising book. At first glance it seems it might be a dry dissertation on wrought iron as it has been employed in shipbuilding. Within a few pages, however, one is caught up in an account of the author and his young daughter braving the high seas in a 100-plus year old Viking craft, trying to channel their forebears' experience, heading west with no instruments, confident they'll find landfall, which they do.
The account leads into Engvig's discoveries concerning iron, how the Vikings utilized it to fasten their extremely able craft, and how eventually its utilization led to the era of seas being the avenues of commerce that we now know.
So the reader is engaged in the author's exploration of iron as a shipbuilding material, and not by plowing through a tedious treatise, or for lack of technical analysis. Anyone who loves boats and voyaging, or anyone who is fascinated with how things are built, anybody who's ever thought about Leif Erikson casting off and heading west into the unknown, and where such voyages have brought us, will be glad they picked up this book. You'll read it for the adventure, but you'll want it in your library for sharing and reference.

I'm a fan of Wild Child Publishing's horror books, but I didn't know what to expect of Weirdly. I bought it and read it in one sitting. This anothology is an adult's version of the old Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series. Some of the stories are very short - something like 2 pages - but there are some real gems in this collection. This is a great book to take to the beach, or if you're looking for something you can get something from reading in a short span of time.

Among the Very Best "Unknown" American Novels

William Attaway's BLOOD ON THE FORGE powerfully depicts both the Black migration to the industrial north after WWI and the startling hell-like environment of the vast iron & steel works of the era. No other writer--novelist, sociologist, historian--has ever captured so well the compelling, visceral experience of the humans working these sacrificial jobs. As Attaway walks us through the vast furnace & forge areas of the works, our own skin scorches along with that of his worker-protagonists. We become party to the daily struggle to survive the most appalling working conditions.
This novel deserves a place on the highest level of our American esteem. It's tragic Attaway was unable to produce more work, since both his vision of the American experience and his fictive language were intense, revelatory and precious to anyone wishing to know and acknowledge this nation's true industrial and racial history.

I have not read my grandfather's books, but i am planning on doing so this summer. I love to write as my grandfather did, i am currently writing a science fiction book, the subject matter is very different to his books, but when i write it remineds my father of his father when his father would write. I never met my grandfather but i feel he is always with me.

Being a collector, dealer and trader with my own online cast iron business..., this the what most collectors call the Bible of Griswold or the BLUE book. It is well laid out with great pictures. The author, Dave Smith, is friendly and easy to approach with questions and is very knowledgeable. It is the first book I go to.

Great pictures and lots of neat little notes. A sample of the pricing of any and all. Includes a short history of most of the companies that have made cast iron cookware, and other items in cast iron.

This is one of the best books on Boudica yet, and if you only read one, this should be the one you read. There is relatively little known about the woman that has become so important in some many ways to so many segments of society, and what is "known" should be treated with caution. Hingley and Unwin do an excellent job of showing what we do know, what we don't know, and what we might know but should think critically about in the context of the story of Boudica. They manage to create an interesting story without compromising on the evidence, avoiding what so many do when they say all the right things about biased sources and then mostly ignore what they just said and relate what those sources say as fact. Instead, Hingley and Unwin weave the critical assessment of both written and archaeological courses into their discussion in a way that keep it relevant to the story they tell. This story is given substance by the up-to-date discussion of current archaeological research on the period, which provides as useful review for professionals and interested others alike. The second half of the book was also interesting, providing a review of the ways in which "Boudica" became transformed into "Boadicea", the cultural icon variously of the right, the left, and the centre. This is far more standard in this type of literature, but nonetheless valuable in terms of what it brings to the table.
Probably most importantly, they manage to do all this in a highly readable fashion. Tackling the deconstruction of assumptions of Roman superiority, the inevitability of Romanization, and the uncritical use of written sources can often get mired down in jargon and so sail beyond what most people understand or care about. However, this book does it in a way that is both accessible and convincing. Nice job all around!

This book could not be given enough stars. It takes a fascinating episode in history, the revolt of the Queen of the Iceni of Britain in AD 60-61, and looks at it from historical, archaeological, literary, and mythical points of view. It shows how Boudica has went from simply the best-remembered of many contemporary British female warlords to variously being portrayed as a sadistic villian, a feminist hero, and a champion of British nationalism and politics. Overall, the book examines the real Boudica's role in history and her subsequent impact on modern Britain in a manner that is both informative and enjoyable to read. It is a fine source on Queen Boudica, the Celtic 'Woman of Victory' from every perspective!

Though presented for professionals in the field, virtually every paper is intelligible to the lay person, opening new horizons for anyone interested in the history of this region. Exceptionally well-edited, with chapters covering archeology, migration and nomadism, linguistics, genetics and physical anthropology, metallurgy, textiles, geography and climatology, history, mythology and ethnology, a long overdue comprehensive treatment of this subject is finally at hand. Every contributor to the two-volume set should be pleased with this phenomenal achievement. Persons interested in many diverse topics, such as Zoroastrian studies, history of the Fergana Valley, or Tocharian linguistics, will still find many papers of interest, whether treated as separate subjects or not. Outstanding!

The art is great and the transfers are of high quality. The transfers are all different sizes, from full page designs to small trim pieces. Several of the designs can be chained to create borders. Some are mirrored and others are matched multi-part designs. Excellent quality and great variety.
