Don Ball, Jr. was a flat-out genius. An artist with a camera. His pictures in this book are brilliant. On top of that, the
man was a poet. His descriptions of the old railroads and the settings for his shots are everything from rhapsodic to humorous
to downright heartbreaking. There's not a lot of text to this one, just enough to complement the photos, one on each page,
each carefully crafted. Thanks to Amazon for making this available through their used book network...

Rambling Recollections of Flying and Flyers is a Treasure

Rambling Recollections is a sort of autobiographical history of aviation in Indiana, particularly in the Muncie area, written
by Edmund Ball of the Ball Corporation, known mainly for providing glass canning jars essential to the nation for several
decades. Not so well known is the involvement of Ball Corporation in aviation, from early fruit jar encapsulated landing strip
lighting to production of several models of space satellites. Mr. Ball describes his series of involvements with the many
airplanes he has flown and owned, from Jennies to jets, and important figures in aviation history he has known along the way.
For anyone interested in aviation history or aviation nostalgia, the book is a treasure.-- Gale Craig Anderson, IN

Evolution of Political Theory + A Marx-Darwin Clarification

This interesting series of snapshots on the course of modern political theory, from Machiavelli, through Vico, Rousseau, to
Marx and Rawls, also contains an important and useful essay, "Marx and Darwin Reconsidered", exposing the myths that surround
the supposed letters of Marx to Darwin.
"For more than a century the names of K. Marx and C.Darwin have been linked in an apparently indissoluble union. That union, I shall argue is almost wholly chimerical. It dervies from a myth created after Marx's death by Friedrich Engels, disseminated by later Marxists as evidence for their theory's scientific status, and given considerable credence and suport by the discovery of two letters written by Darwin to Marx. As we shall see the first of these letters is authentic, so too is the second--except that the addressee was not Karl Marx".

History has forgotten the harm done to Marxism by Darwin's theory, as the disastrous equation of evolutionary mechanism, natural selection and class struggle collated in certain more degenerated versions of revolutionary thinking. Setting the record straight is important here, for all perspectives.

A variety of poems presenting reptile facts within a fantasy

This book presented facts about types of reptiles through poetry in a way that captivated my five-year-old boy. He enjoyed
the whimsical pictures and the context: imagining what it would be like to see reptiles dancing at a ball--without eating
each other! In addition to reptile facts, the book demonstrated many different types of poetic form. A rhythmic reading
of this books entertained and involved him from start to finish. This book could be used to teach zoology or poetry, but
in both cases the result would be a fun time for all.

new baseball parks and urban culture

Review Date: 2005-03-01
A work in the publisher's series Sport and Popular Culture, "Retro Ball Parks" looks at the urban phenomenon of the building
of new, state-of-the-art, baseball stadiums to try to bring back this sport as it is viewed nostalgically. These are the stadiums
built in cities around the country usually with some public funds and big tax breaks and other economic favors to the team
owners. They are characterized by costly suites for corporate and well-to-do fans, rising ticket prices for all levels of
regular seats from boxes to bleachers, moveable roofs and other features to provide comfort for the fans, and corporate logos
lining the walls of the playing fields. Rosensweig is interested not only in how these stadiums promising revivals of urban
centers come to be out of aspects of contemporary culture and political and economic interests; and also in the peculiar,
particularly postmodern, notion of authenticity regarding baseball such stadiums are supposed to revive. In many cases, new
businesses have sprung up around the new stadiums attempting to replicate neighborhoods that have been torn down to make way
for them. Rosenweig's feelings on this phenomenon he covers are seen in the title of his introduction--"Cheap Grace." The
author did most of his research in Cleveland, where the Cleveland Indian's Jacobs Field was built as the anchor of the Gateway
Developmental District. "The Gateway serves as a fascinating case study of the cultural shifts enacted by the transformation
of a city's economic base from local commerce and manufacturing to recreational tourism." Stadiums in other cities are brought
in as well, notably the Baltimore Orioles' Camden Yards, the major urban stadium project giving rise to the others. Rosenweig
is a professor of Inter-Disciplinary Studies at the U. of Virginia.

This book covers South Africa's return to international cricket after 21 years of isolation.
Colin Bryden follows the team through it's ground-breaking tour of India, their jubilation and exasperation in the World Cup,
and their harsh learning experience in the Caribbean.
It is well written, and will captivate the reader to share in the agony and ecstacy shared by those cricketers during this
time

It covers history, rules, procedures, strategies, etc. There are monochrome pictures of how to stand and move. Along with this are several diagrams of angles best for different types of serves. The book covers rules of different groups and how to score.
A very important but overlooked part of the sport is warming up and stretching exercises. They are covered in this book also.
The only thing lacking from the book are the strength and endurance drills that do not use the ball its self.
There is so much information in this 116 page book that it can make your racquet spin. This book is a must if you are even half way serious.
