I used this book to take a six-day bike tour from Burlington, VT to Montreal, Quebec, and I had a great trip. The author's directions are so accurate that I was able to ride all the way to Montreal without consulting a map! The author recommended hotels that are conveniently located for cyclists and chose roads and bike paths that were scenic and generally had light traffic. This book is a valuable resource for any bicycle tourist!

Armstrong Encore is the best cycling book I have ever read. It does not insult the cyclist intelligence like most other cycling books I have read. It gives in-depth information of day-by-day following the 2000 Tour. It give explainations and insight that can only come from the pro's themselves. This kind of coverage is not found on TV or videos.

I've read many books about cycling races over the years and this has to be about the best. excellent in-depth coverage of Lance Armstrong and the US Postal squad as they attempt to repeat their previous year's victory. I could hardly put it down. in fact I'm already reading it for the second time.

Wonderfully done maps and detailed cue sheets guide you on the less traveled roads of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The "sampler" cue sheet is my favorite. This book is great if your going to spend a beautiful fall weekend in Bucks County. Most of the rides are less than 20 miles in length, which is ideal for the casual cyclist. Includes bike shop and rental information as well as places to dine.

This book has to be the best general guide for cycling. It takes you through all the steps of how to buy the bike that suits you, what accessories to get and what not to waste money on. It also explains how to setup your bike properly before you take your first ride. All in an easy to understand everyday English. I would recommend only to beginners, but veterans may find some useful information as well.

It covers everything from how to find a bike that fits you, to what accessories you really need, to how to plan an exercise program once you get the bike, to how to repair it yourself. And not only is it a good resource, but it's also a pleasure to read! Andrea's been there and done that and tells all about it (and how you can do it too) in this snappily written, info-packed guidebook for biking the Grand Canyon. Though Andrea's a long-distance cyclist at heart, she's written this book for us regular folk. An intro includes tons of advice on biking in general and biking the Grand Canyon specifically, even including a history of biking in the area which is fascinating! Rides range from 1.2 miles on up and are rated for technical difficulty and family friendliness. She includes info for each ride on the type of terrain, the availability of water, elevation profiles, necc. permits, and the best season to bike it. The book is well illustrated with photos and maps and also includes anecdotes and local lore cyclists can enjoy over a campfire or when they're taking a breather. Andrea was a Grand Canyon National Park ranger for many years and her depth and bredth of knowledge about the place is incredible. For any level of mountain biker heading to the Grand Canyon, this book is as essential as your water bottle and a set of properly inflated tires.

Biking the Grand Canyon Area is more than a travel book. It is immediately apparent that Andrea Lankford knows what she is talking about with regards to great trails. This is the second book of hers that I have read. Her first book scored 5 on my list as well and is called Biking the Arizona Trail. Andrea was one of the best Park Rangers the National Park Service had. She passes on her knowledge of an area she called home for many years. You won't find a more detailed book! Go out and buy it and ride like the wind!

Monique Ryan does a wonderful job at explaining the need for sports nutrition when training for a particular sporting event--triathlon, marathon, etc---or for a moderately active person. The specificity of the content of the book helps one to understand the vitality of an appropriate nutritional combination in order to provide the athlete with optimal energy before, during and after their particular race and/or daily activity. This book assisted me in completing my first triathlon and enabled me to sustain a moderate pace throughout this event. I am confident I would not have been able to complete this event without Ms. Ryan's book and expertise. A great value and learning experience!!!!

Monique Ryan is a registered dietitian who specializes in sport nutrition, and is well-qualified to be the author of such a book. I didn't think that this book could offer me anything new about Ireland's highways and byways. But I was pleasantly surprised. I have used it mainly on reasonably short trips out of Dublin. It is written in a very readable style and it allows for all levels of ability. There are a few routes that take in glorious mountain views, but yet are not too challenging. I love the fact that every route has a recommended lunch stop - very important!. I am looking forward to trying some of the routes in the west of Ireland, which I love. Hopefully there will be a new edition by the time I have tried all of the routes!

I have just returned from Ireland having cycled from Killarney to Dublin in a clockwise fashion. I cycled 1,054 miles in less than three weeks. While I took M ichelin, Lonely Planet, Irish Tourist Board guides etc., I discarded them all in favour of Cycle Touring Ireland. It was the most incredible companion and I followed it faithfully. I just wish I could put Brendan on a personal retainer and have him write Cycle Touring Canada, Cycle Touring USA, Cycle Touring France etc. A fantastic job!

Fun and Functional!

I loved this book! It was obviously written by someone who really loves cycling. It is well researched, comprehensive and very easy to use. There are cycle routes suitable for all levels of fitness and the extra information on the scenery, recommended lunch stops etc add greatly to the whole experience. Don't cycle Ireland without it!

This book, a tribute to the dean of Tour de France broadcasters, Phil Liggett, is a genuine find. Donaldson has taken 30 years' worth of Liggett's Tour de France calls and recast them into more than 200 poems of varying lengths. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Liggett himself has a natural gift for rhythm and metaphor, as well as a wide-angle style of commentary that has always made TDF seem so much larger than a mere athletic event. In Liggett's world, and thus Donaldson's poems, cyclists become kings and jokers, conquerors and the conquered, and/or any number of other stages in between. The book's title, by the way, comes from a classic Liggett moment: Watching a cyclist climb a peak during the 1989 event, the broadcaster observed, "He's dancing on the pedals in a most immodest way."

Some of the poems pack a surprising punch in a very few lines, all the more so for anyone who has ever climbed on a bicycle seat for any event requiring endurance. In this category is one titled "Contender": "He is settling in./He is recovering./And he will kick in." Or there's this one, "Inferno," which reminded me of the John Berryman poetry I read in college: "There's our friend/the devil/who's joined us/the past few days." Among the longer poems, I particularly liked "World of Hurt," one of a number of tributes to Greg LeMond. Donaldson also uses typography and phrasing to amplify the meaning and impact of the individual poems. (Check out "Come to Paris." It'll make you smile.) Finally, embedded between the lines of the poems is a succinct history of TDF, sure to evoke nostalgic feelings in any true fan.

Overall, for anyone who's into cycling, sportscasting genius, or poetry itself, Dancing is a very nice read.

Want to get outdoors and be active in the Boston area? Start by buying this book. Lee Sinai describes, in wonderful detail, many of the rides and hikes one can take within a thirty-five-mile radius of Boston. The author has organized the forty trips around geographical areas, north, south or west of Boston, so selecting one is easy. Maps of each destination are included. Each trip description includes what's important to an outdoor enthusiast.... availability of restrooms, closest access to food, degree of difficulty, directions for getting there, and a historical background of the area.
Using this book, I discovered Dogtown, a mountain biking haven in Gloucester. I also experienced Cameron's, home to the best lobster roll in Massachusetts. The author led me to Great Brook Farm in Carlisle for cycling and then to Kimball's for a memorable ice cream treat.
As a guidebook, I give Exploring In and Around Boston on Bike and Foot the highest rating.

Right from the get go I found this hiking and biking guide to be a miracle of organization and indispensable information. This book not only groups locations by geographical location, but also with respect to hiking, road biking and mountain biking. I found the handy reference guide towards the beginning of the book extremely useful while including not only difficulty ratings, but also mileage for each trip, something not always available in one specific location in a guide book. The maps accompanying each site are extremely easy to follow and the descriptions really do fit the terrain perfectly, whether or not you chose to take the book along on your journeys. I found the directions to each location to be extremely useful and especially appreciated the public transportation options that help those city dwellers who lack automobiles. Other handy features include locations and descriptions of local restaurants, attractions and even restrooms. This book included an very helpful mix of locations both in the greater Boston area, as well as highlighting several gems in the neighboring suburbs. I especially appreciated the handy reference map showing the location of all the spots, as well as the ever present tips to find geater enjoyment in your outdoor adventures!

This book organizes all of its road rides and off-road rides together in 8 geographic areas in Northern California, and includes difficulty ratings, distance, time, elevation profile, map, directions and useful descriptions for each ride. What I like best is the author's lists of "best" bike rides in 12 different categories, such as Best Oceanfront Rides, Best Rides for Wildlife Viewing, and Best Rides to Waterfalls, among others. It covers more routes than any other bike guide I've seen or owned.

I am an avid biker (http://www.sujee.net/outdoors/biking/) and this book has found a permanant place in my camel-back! I have read/bought my share of biking books in Northern california. But I liked this one better b/c

A) rides are clearly classified mountain or road : this seems trivial, but more than once I had turned up to a trail with my road bike, just to find out the trail is not paved / dirt.

B) Every ride has clearly marked 'how to get there' 'difficulty' and 'elevation maps', etc.

C) All rides are neatly catogorized into locations and a very easy to use reference / Table of Contents

D) Plenty of rides for every level. Most of them have a little 'insider tips' as well.
