A Bit More of an American Cycling Legend Revealed
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Greg LeMond seems to be a bit misunderstood. Samual Abt does a good job of clarifing some of those misunderstanding through this book. It gives a personal account by Greg of what he was thinking during and after key races and events (how he could have won at least one more Tour, how he believes he could have continued to win more Tours, his negotiation contracts and tactics). A very good look at what lead to the comeback of an American Cycling Hero. I had a problem with the book's order of events. There was a general chronological order but it was mixed with jumping around between time periods. I think this took a little bit away from the book. Overall though, I recommend it and can't wait to read Samual Abt's new book.

Old favorite, new cover

This book used to be titled "The Noiseless Tenor", but in this newer edition it has been retitled and given a few extra editorial words. This is a wide-ranging survey of references to the bicycle in mostly-20th-Century works; sometimes the reference is a stretch and Starrs points this fact out. Occasionally he has to piece together fragments of a scene to make the bicycling reference clear. Starrs' piecework is always in italic type -- and occasionally I wondered if he'd ever get to the author's words. But this collection is well-done, and Starrs obviously loves everything to do with the bicycle. His children show up occasionally (mostly in the form of recollections from a cross-country tour while they were growing up), and his own experience influenced the selection. Everything from Ernest Hemingway's flat observational prose to a truly fantastical five-rider cross-country race (against a locomotive) is fair game here, and this book suits its stated purpose of being a volume that can be stashed in the thinking cycle tourist's pannier.

Tells you EVERYTHING about bicycle travel.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-15
The author has gone on worldwide bicycle tours and used a bike exclusively for 4 1/2 years for transportation. He tells you how to prepare for every possible scenario on the road and in the city, bike maintenance, styles, safety, etc. He has experienced all the pitfalls and shares with you all the solutions. The only thing that's not perfect is that it was written in 1983, so it's not as up-to-date as it could be. But otherwise EXCELLENT!

This book was extremely helpful to campers of all levels. I have been camping for quite some time and still learned a lot of tips on how to make your trip as enjoyable and environmentaly friendly as possible. Anyone considering a day hike or longer should read this first.

Probably the best map out there but could be better
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I like this map and I use it fairly frequently. It could be better however. My main grip is that it doesn't show what kind of road the bike route is on. It would be nice to know if there is a bike lane, on/off road... ect... otherwise... very nice map and the best I've seen in the Milwaukee area.

For the new or reborn Motorcyclist
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

A very readable, well illustrated book covering most areas of motorcycling for those that are new to the pastime or those coming back to motorcycling. Highly recommended if you are in either of these groups. An experienced motorcyclist would enjoy the read, but would only learn things in a few areas, depending on what type of experience enjoyed.

Good pocket guide...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-13
Not only does the size of the book lend itself to being on the trail (easily stuffs into a camelpack or daypack), but it does a good job of explaining some basic repairs or problems you may encounter during a ride. Such things covered include: brake pads rubbing against the rim, unable to unclip from your pedal, a jammed chain, loose hub, or simply not having tire levers. A description is given of the problem, how to diagnose the problem, and what steps you can take to repair it yourself (or at least get back to the trialhead).

This book also provides diagrams, labeling components. This is beneficial to new riders who may not be certain of what is a cog, derailleur, or hub for instance.

While there may be other, more detailed repair books out there, this is a great book that you can easily take with you as you are first learning how to fix some common problems yourself. Definitely a good pocket guide.

Get out and ride, and take this book with you.

Review Date: 2001-04-30
This is a great book to get out and around if you don't have "inside" information on where to bike. I can only comment on the Central Ontario section, which is fairly complete, although it does leave out a few county forests that are excellent rides. One weakness of the book is that the trail maps are not very accurate, especially in large, relatively unmarked areas like Durham Forest, where a compass is usefull. I highly recommend this book. Added bonus is that a lot of these trails make great cross country skiing in the winter.
