What team was averaging 18,100 fans before his arrival and after his arrival over 35,000? The New York Mets and the person to whom this attendance-doubling feat goes to is Mike Piazza. Watching the way the Mets have performed since his arrival is one of the reasons they are one of the top ball teams in the National League.

Since his arrival in New York, Piazza has taken his team from mediocre to the NLCS and nearly pulled off one the biggest upset in baseball. Piazza abilities behind the plate are as impressive as his interaction the fans of New York outside the gates.

Over 125 pages packed with stories and photos, this is one book for every serious Mets or Piazza fan. The book only covers Mike's time in New York, so if you are looking for the definitive biography this is not he book. Price under $25.00 this book is certainly a good value for the money.

This is a wonderful book for children. The chapters are short but informative. There are many lessons to be learned here, including the meaning of the word determination, and the importance of family. Mike didn't start out to be a catcher but learned the position and is now the best.

This book is a must read for families who love baseball but can't always afford trips to the majors. Not to mention the small town feel of baseball as it should be -- these are the memories I want to share with my children. Now whenever we take a summer vacation, we'll be taking the Minor League Baseball Book with us.

The Minor League Baseball Book is a comprehensive directory of information on minor league teams, including the short-season A and Rookie leagues. It provides a wide variety of information on each team, including team history, ballpark information and directions, and special features. It also provides local lodging and restaurant suggestions, and non-baseball attractions as well. No photos or team schedules are included. The Minor League Baseball Book is filled with facts about the teams and their locales. When I was in Binghamton watching the minor league Mets, noted an unusual flying insect that was fluttering about (a real insect, not a mascot). When I later checked the Baseball Book I learned from it that they were mayflies

WONDEFUL COLLECTION - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-02
What an absolutely delightful collection of thoughts and words concerning the wonderful game of baseball. This is not a collection of "quotes" from professional baseball players, rather it is a collection of the collective thought of average people, like you and me, who played, followed and watched the game over the years. My memories go back to the mid 1940, some of the memories here go back even further. This is quite an inspirational work and not just for the lovers of the game of baseball. There is something here for everyone. I dare say you will not be able to read this one without getting a glimps of yourself or a family member or a wonderful memory of when you were younger. It is also a wonderfully inspirational book for the young man or women just starting to learn to appreciate this game. Highly recommend this one.

The lazy summer days of baseball never tasted so good...

This compilation of baseball stories contains the most personal and powerful reflections on our national pastime in quite some time - and that makes it a MUST read for it's inspirational messages.

The uniquely flavorful commentary makes the reader feel as if one has gone back in time to a bygone era where baseball and it's heroes were synonymous with growing up in America.

The reason this book hits the "black" is because each story is so personally relayed to the reader. The feeling that was experienced at that exact moment in time is brought forth for all not only to visualize, but to hear, smell, taste, and touch. It's amazing that just one simple baseball memory can be forever etched into the hearts, minds, and souls of each author.

Thank you Mike Schact for assembling these stunning pieces of Americana ... a job well done!

Solid First-Person Memories
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-30
This is a very enjoyable compilation of first-person accounts of their top day in baseball by the game's greatest stars. We hear from Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Christy Mathewson, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Brock, Cy Young and many others. Some of the 36 first-person tales are from the World Series; others are from regular season games. We hear Ty Cobb discuss the day his Tigers took the 1907 pennant, Leo Durocher as his Brooklyn Dodgers did likewise in 1941, Sandy Koufax throwing a perfect game in 1965, Roger Maris hitting 61 homers in 1961, and many equally interesting tales. The player remembrances were told to sportswriters like Jack Orr and John Carmichael, who gave us nicely readable prose. This book is dated but clearly worth reading.

Baseball When It Was A Game--Great Nostalgia
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-14
Do you get a chill when you see names like Ruth, Cobb, and Gehrig in an actual box score--a box score from a bygone era that omits runs-batted-in and sometimes even times at bat? Have you ever heard about the "Merkle boner," Walter Johnson's dramatic first world series victory (in relief!), unknown Howard Ehmke starting a world series game instead of the great Lefty Grove and setting a strikeout record against the heavy-hitting Chicago Cubs (yes, the Cubs), Pete Reiser's Dodgers heading toward a pennant, Tinker to Evers to Chance? If so, you'll love this well-written, nostalgic look at baseball the way it used to be (before 1945). Though these first-person accounts were written by leading sportswriters of that era, the personalities of the players come through clearly. Some old-time (if occasionally fuzzy) pictures add to the fun. Highly recommended.

I love the "Nate the Great" books by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. They keep my daughter's interest and she loves the characters and Nate always having his pancakes. She tries to read the books herself and I love any book that challenges her to do that. I hope to see more books by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. I feel she's a talented author and should be applauded for her children's works.

I really liked the book because it talks about some kids that play baseball togheter and when the second base was stollen they decided to look for it. Nate the Great worked hard to find it. He found it behind the bookcase in Oliver's house. I also liked the name he gave his dog: Sludge. I think he is a great detective because he was able to solve the case.

The Latino Influence in Baseball - Past and Present
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-06

Wendel gives a face to the many Latino players that have been a part of baseball in the US -- first in "Negro" leagues and finally in the majors where they have come to dominate. Wendel's writing is always very readable, with facts interlaced with plenty of stories by and about the Latino players. The photographs are a wonderful plus to this excellent account of the rise of Latino players in baseball. Six year olds (such as my grandson) can readily identify the pictures of current players. Another excellent read (this one fiction) by Wendel is "Castro's Curveball." I highly recommend it also.

Okay, let's start with my admission that I'm not a baseball fan. I knew the game from childhood but the big money and greed have alienated many of us who enjoyed baseball as kids. That being said, I found that The New Face of Baseball refreshing enough to evoke some of those feelings that made me appreciate baseball in the first place. The book has to do with talented Latino baseball players like Clemente, Cepeda, and Sosa. The common element is that these players played the game elsewhere before coming the United States, places where the game is more sacred and believe it or not more important than here in America.

The books consists of short stories about many of today's heroes that have quickly become baseball superstars, and those older stars who paved the way for the younger Latino players much the way Robinson and Dobry did for African American players. The author uses player interviews and past experiences of his own to give the reader a greater appreciation for what players Latin America have done for today's game.

Maybe the most interesting part is the All Century Latino team listed at the end of the book. It's a lineup that would challenge any other all-star team, past or present.

This is quite simply the best baseball book I've ever read. I've been watching baseball my whole life but Koppett gives whole new insights into the game. A long review isn't necesary...I'll just say that if you're a serious baseball fan or someone just getting into the game, you absolutely must read this book.

As a lifelong baseball fan, I had thought I knew everything there was to know about the game of baseball...until I found this book by chance in a bookstore some years ago.

Leonard Koppett's book is perhaps the most insightful book I've ever read regarding the National Pastime. This book represents an exhaustive research of virtually every aspect of our beloved game, giving the reader glimpses into everything that comprises the game of baseball, including, not only the fundamentals of the game, but other facets such as scouting, contract negotiation and a brief history of the rules of the game.

If you're looking for a frame of reference, I would compare this book to 'Men At Work,' by George Will. However, I find myself referring back to Koppett's book much more frequently than I do Will's book. Whereas Will describes the 'what' of the game, Koppett describes the 'why' of the game.

This book should be read by everyone who considers him/herself to be a fan of baseball. Fans new to the game will appreciate the insight. Veteran fans will be given some new bits to ponder.
