Reviews and presents the 'greats' and the not so 'great' in an apostolic and alphabetical order by career importance and also by relevant statistics. This is the sign-off item for any MLB argument and for the Prevention--of any dubious 'know-it-alls' as labeled by the conformist's predilections. Retorts even the neophyte to the game's roots of the 'movement' of the players of all times and of all creeds and nations. Introduces an ingenious formula for including in the documentation those numbers not usually graphed or figured out that any fan would like to know, i.e., "sabermetrics". Who was pitching, hitting and circling the bases when records, both good and poor, were being tallied and posted on the center field boards, and now in the hand-held instruments of reprisal (cell-phones, iPods, whatever's). No sports fan can be without this volume: three strikes--you're out the plate! If you don't get this tome.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I just could not put it down. It reminded me of "Catcher In The Rye" however I thought it was even better. It was exciting, sad, funny,it had everything. With all the great reviews I have seen on this book, I can't imagine that I have not heard about this character or this author. This character, I believe, will join all the other great American characters in literature.

This is one of the greatest books I've ever read.

This is an American tragedy. It is truly one of the greatest books I've ever read. The writing is so rich and so funny, it reminds one of "Catcher In The Rye" only I feel it is even better. The whole time I kept wondering if a movie is going to be made about this, because I believe this character, Darrel Skaitts, will be remembered with all the great characters in literature. It was one of the great reading pleasures of my life...

The fabulous Montreal Royals - the team that made baseball history

Great baseball history

William Brown's history of the Montreal Royals is a must read for anyone with a love of baseball. I had been searching for information on the story of this organization since my father told me about the Royals that he followed growing up 6 blocks from Delormier Downs in Montreal's East End in the 40's and 50's.
Mr. Brown's tells the history of professional baseball in Montreal from its beginnings in the 1890's up until the Royals demise in 1960. As the #1 farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers many future stars passed through Montreal on their way to the major leagues including Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Duke Snider to name a few and William Brown has told their story from a fans perspective. The book includes numerous photos drawn from his personal collection in addition to the archival sources. I highly recommend this facinating bit of baseball history.

Brown's History of the Royals Hits a Home Run

The city of Montreal is famous for more than the Canadiens hockey team and smoked meat: in 1946 the city was home to Jackie Robinson while he played for the city's International League club, the Royals. William Brown's book covers the history of the Royals from their early Eastern League years in the 1890s through to their end in 1960. While typical of the popular-history genre, the book is exceptionally well researched and informative.
Brown's story of the Royals is enhanced by photographs of the long-gone Atwater Park and Delorimier Downs stadiums that hosted the team. His story is further enhanced by the insights of people who saw or partook in Royals games.
Ken Singleton's foreword underlines Robinson as the central figure not only to this book, but the history of blacks in baseball. Understandably, then, Robinson's exploits as a Royal are central to the book: he graces the cover and merits an entire chapter of his own.
Readers will note with intrigue the number of other baseball legends who passed through Montreal as part of the Royals: Managers George Stallings, Ed Barrow, Rabbit Maranville; and players Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Tommy Lassorda; even Roberto Clemente suited up for the team. The book is a light read sure to entertain baseball fans young and old alike. It is well worth buying.

Always a baseball fan, I picked up this book randomly on an obscure shelf at the library because I did not know too much about the Negro Leagues. This book was EXCELLENT! From here, I read many other books about the Negro Leagues. Although geared more for the academic than the casual reader, I still highly recommend it.

Finally - a good scholarly book on the Negro Leagues!

This is an absorbing look at Hilldale club, a Philadelphia based black team. It also tells the story of how black baseball got started and prospered during the 1920s. There was a great deal in here in which I was not aware of before. Lots of great pix too! Highly recommended.

Called "fundamentals" of fastpitch - the ideas are both fundamental and advanced. Highly recommended for beginning as well as advanced coaches, players, parents.

One of the best books I have read in the past year has to be Fence Busters by Chip Hilton. It is a marvelous book about how Chip and his friends make it into the collage baseball team. One of the major reasons I enjoyed this book so much is that it is about baseball. It is a sport where different people play. Another reason I found the book to be so wonderful is that it was baseball because that is my favorite sport. The reason I picked out this book is because I used to play baseball for 8 years. Of course, my favorite reason for loving this book is it is a sports book. As you can see, Fence Busters By Chip Hilton was truly my favorite book.

Mr. Santo certainly had his work cut out for him. Defining Cub greatness? I would have thought it only warranted a pamphlet or perhaps a column. I think the title should have been more like "defining Cubs great efforts, but disappointing results across the eras" no?

Must have for Cubs fans.

This item is an absolutely must have for all Cubs fans. There is something here for everyone. The long-time diehards will relive highlights from the careers of Cubs greats and the 'newbie' Cubs fans will meet the legends for the first time. Best of all, this book is brought to you by one of the legends himself... Ron Santo.

I'm normally not a model builder, and I never saw Forbes Field, but I really enjoyed putting this ballpark model together. The quality of the design is tremendous, and the finished product is display-worthy. A nice gift idea for native Pittsburghers. The enterprise is very much doable, but this is no two-day project. If you aren't willing to put some energy into it, you're better off with a jigsaw puzzle.

A challange for the model builder. Excellent pictorial.

If you are not familiar with Freddy I suggest you read "Freddy the Detective" first to see how he became a detective.
Now this may very well be his greatest adventure for kids of all ages.
Once again Freddy is confronted with many overlapping mysteries. One of the Marinas (Two Clicks) is missing. And Freddy must use some of his best disguises in the investigation. As with Freddy stories there are many adult concepts that are brought up in the story and one must know where loyalty lies and be ware of deceit.
Now have fun and learn how the ABI (Animal Bureau of Investigation) helps solve the mysteries.
