Sherwood Wirt translated Augustine's "Confessions" into modern language, producing one of the English language's most beautiful volumes. Search for it here on Amazon; there are still some used copies available.

Wirt was also the last journalist to interview C.S. Lewis before his death. From this encounter Wirt has written useful articles and constructed materials for several courses on Lewis and his writings.

Here, in "Jesus" Wirt is at his best: elegant prose, his ideas expressed with a clarity and simplicity of language that is a joy to read. Anyone wanting a fuller picture of the "Man of Sorrows" will find it here, in this vibrantly written picture of the joyous heart of God's own Son.

Recommended Reading --- as is any volume by this gifted author!

Or maybe because we have never been told about it. This book takes all our misconceptions about Jesus' personality and throws them out the window. If you want to imagine a real, human Savior who knew how to love and enjoy life, read this book and see a Jesus you were never taught about. Thanks!

I was so glad this book was brought out of retirement!

I picked up this book at my local library for no particular reason. I'd never read a war memoir before, but I had taught English in China. This was an extremely well written book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in China, WWII, the life of a spy, or a good story.

I came in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

Sharp, tight writing.

I cannot recommend enough Mr. Pinck's tale/memoir. Throughout my reading of this book I was constantly impressed with the clean, understated, wry writing style of Mr. Pinck.

Every bit as engrossing and sincere as WWII memoirs such as Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed" (but askew and differing in the experiences retold), Pinck's book offers an endearing and unpretentious yarn set amidst the massive and convoluted backdrop of the China-India-Burma theater. The characters are painfully and believably real, with the story having no patina of time or nostalgic filtration.

Anyone interested in the history of WWII, Asia, US Intelligence Services, or memoirs of colorful distinction will surely enjoy this very readable book by Dan Pinck.

At the risk of sounding crass, this story would make for an excellent film.

We have all seen the James Bond films with the infamous agent mindlessly trudging around behind enemy lines, wooing women and slaughtering hordes of stereotypical bad guys. Mr. Pinck's novel is an intellectually stimulating story his experiances in wartime China, spent in a mission deep behind enemy lines. Although lacking in some of the glitz and glamour of the Ian Flemming's classic spy novels, his tale is equally intrigueing. With interesting characters such as his witty and cocksure cabbie in Peking to his radio operator's double agent girlfriend, the author, in beautiful prose, weaves and intiguing war story. Despite its lack of "shoot'em up" action, the story wonderfully portrays not only China and the interesting characters Mr. Pinck meets, but the beauty and wonder of this ancient land. The drunkness, sickness and heart break faced in the book are all pulled togather in this wonderful book.

All in all this is a great read that will keep you spell bound to the end. This is truly one of the best cloak and dagger stories I have read in a long while.

In WWII Dan Pinck journied to China to spy on the Japanese for Wild Bill Donovon's fedgling intelligence agency, then known as the OSS (now better known as the CIA). Mr. Pinck's account of his tour of duty spent in a Christian mission with an eccentric priest, a lovesick radioman and his savvy translator, is both humurous and literary. Through descriptive language and detailed sketches Pinck renders the harsh living conditions and genial, wine loving spirit of the Chinese people. While Pinck may read like Turgenev, one cannot ignore his own distinct style with which he captures the desolation and all too human trepidation of a young spy completely out on his own in a foreign land dealing with Japanese troops, unreliable agents, drunk Chinese generals, coy Chinese girls and by the book superior offiecers. Pinck has given us a true experience which displays the WWII generation's triumphant brand of American spirit, which at once possessed pragmatism, courage, humility and humor. A truly enjoyable read!

Till date, though "lean" was practiced by leaders in respective fields, not much literature is available. This book captured different lean logistics practices followed, particularly in automotive world.

I think author wrote this book with lot of his practical knowledge. Among many I was impressed with details on milkruns, consolidation center and returnable containers, pros and cons of using them and right conditions of using them.

Lean Thinking originated from TPS and is well spread in the manufacturing world, with a lot of information on how to improve manufacturing. For logistics however, many Lean tools don't apply; on the other hand there are aspects more specific to logistics, which are not well addressed by the manufacturing-oriented Lean literature.

This book fills the gap and is well written. It is:

-specific instead of generic
-practical instead of theoretical
-detailed instead of high-level
-original instead of "me too"

So, the book shows real problems and solutions in real factories, instead of repeating the same buzzwords, that You can find anyway at any place. It seems to be based on a lot of personal experience of the author.

The messages are illustrated very well with photos, sketches and charts. These are small and not high-end quality but perfectly suitable to deliver the message: "pictures tell more then thousand words".

The text is easily comprehensible, even for a non-native english speaker, like me.

Roderick Smith has put together a heuristic tome that tells you all you need to know to put Linux to work in your office by using its strength as a network OS.

Beginning at the beginning, he starts off with the basics and goes into enough detail to give the reader a good context for his instruction and, at the same time, gives the reader good, useful information about networking in general.

After the basics, its onto the "meat" of networking: IP addresses and their classes, subnetting and other network-related tasks--too many to mention here.

If you are seriously thinking about using Linux in a networked environment at the office or even at home, then buy this book. It's all you'll need to get started and up and running in no time!

This book is targeted at the person who wants to build an intranet for a small to medium sized business using Linux servers.

A well written and well structured book it starts with the basics of configuring Linux (using Red Hat), building a kernel suited for networking, configuring Ethernet and dialling using PPP. After this thorough grounding it goes on to file sharing using NFS, Samba and netatalk and printer sharing. Once you've covered these sections you can connect to your Linux server from other Unix boxes, Windows or a Macintosh, indeed using this book I set up a Linux server to act as a bridge between Macs, Windows 95 and NT servers and two Sun workstations.

It then covers remote login, either using shell protocols telnet or ssh, or X logins using VNC or X Server. Finally it has two chapters on IP masquerading and firewalls.

OK, go over that list again - every aspect of building an intranet is covered.

Having used this book extensively I've found its flaw. When everything works this book is great. Once you run into problems it is less useful. The large amount of ground covered means that Smith has glossed over likely problems and solutions. Troubleshooting is ignored almost entirely.

I would recommend this book as a good beginners guide to building an intranet around Linux to almost everyone with the caveat that you may need more specific information in some areas when you run into serious trouble. If nothing else it is marvellous inspiration.

Superb book. A must have for the do it yourselfer.

This book has been nothing but a pleasure to read -- and not because the subject is pleasant, either. The author knows the subject so well, he is able to walk the fine line between too much information and not enough, at just the right time.

Also, the book is very well organized. The author knows which subjects need to be covered before others. You may be urgent to get to a specific subject, but if you patiently read "prerequisite" chapters (i.e. in the order presented), you won't be disappointed with the wait.

He does cover command line options, usually first, but also includes equivalent GUI tutorials (e.g. linuxconf). He also uses RedHat 6.0 throughout as the preferred example distro. However, he doesn't leave the non-RH user out in the cold by any means.

I bought "Linux Network Servers 24 Seven" beforehand and was lost within the first three chapters. Bought this book to help get a lighter start at leaning Linux networking and it's had all the right information at the right time. (Now I can get my money's worth out of that 24 Seven book).

One special word of advice: No "be all" book seems to cover Samba to a sufficient extent (at least to my satisfaction). In other words, be prepared to also buy a book dedicated to the subject of Samba configuration.

A Great New Teaching Tool for Today's Decision Makers

Review Date: 2003-04-23
Walt's book brings together some important elements of Engineering Economy, Operations Research, and more recent works that stem from the The Goal and Theory of Constraints. However, Walt concentrates primarily on the strategic planning facet and leaves detailed scheduling and capacity analysis to other works. He uses "total contribution" and "total system ROI" as the criteria and introduces "integrative reasoning" as a philosophy to optimize product mix and evaluate a variety of tactical and strategic options. This philosophy is presented in a single, continuous case that extends through the entire book, becoming stronger as it flows from example to example and chapter to chapter. The progressive case study is a chain of tightly related examples which evaluate and rank strategies for product mix, productivity improvements, outsourcing, contract manufacturing, capital planning, budgeting, acquisitions, and multi-plant synergy.

After reading lots of of other current works and spending time on the job, one still may not learn the key lessons carried in this one book.

Using the Profit Maximization Techniques developed by Walt Thrun will allow any production facility to calculate their maximum profit obtainable. Now there is no need to guess what your optimum product mix should be for your plant, what Capital Projects to implement, what your budget and forecast should be. This has the potential to revolutionize productivity as we measure it today. Let's quit getting better at doing the wrong things and start doing the right things.

An Engineer's Perspective

As an engineer in a manufacturing environment I loved the book because it quantitatively expresses the contribution that engineers make to the bottom line. This book will definitely be popular with SME and AIIE. I have been fighting the standard cost battle for years, knowing that it didn't work, but not knowing exactly why or be able to offer an alternative. This book nails both of these issues down in succinct fashion. This book is a real winner!

Review Date: 2003-03-05
Imagine having a tool that could make quantum leaps in company profitability with no added capital investment, cost reduction, or product price increases. It's about working smarter, not harder. It's about using existing manufacturing resources to make the most of the one resource every manufacturing operation shares: time. Within this text lies that tool, evidenced not only in my reading of the book, but in my application of its concepts. Like any tool, it will only be effective when the reader moves past reading the directions to putting the tool into action.

ASQ "Must Read"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-04
This easy-to-read book offers a refreshing new look at non-traditional methods to measure manufacturing performance in terms all decision makers can understand...profit! Armed with readily available computer tools, Walt Thrun confidently and logically assaults conventional thinking and methods in performance measurement and leads the reader to obvious conclusions about the relationship between constraints and profitability. Such measures as "overhead absorbtion, cost allocation and plant utilization" are replaced with "profit optimization, contribution maximation and return on investment". He demonstrates, in detail, how to quantitatively measure the impact of strategic decisions and manufacturing improvements on the bottom line. The concept that local optimization results in global optimization is effectively debunked. The concepts of this book are consistant with the body of knowledge described by the American Society for Quality for Quality Engineer and Quality Manager certification. This book is a "must read" for ASQ members and other quality professionals interested in quantifiable measurement of process improvements.

After 28+ years in this business I have finally stumbled upon an author who knows how to write technical books. This one should be a "how to write" example for other alleged authors.

The book, is clear, concise, and well designed. No assumptions are made; yet it is structured in a manner that one can easily skip over items of familiarity. It is an ideal book in that it spans the needs of users at all levels of expertise and is loaded with real "meat and potatoes" practicality and minimal blue sky theory. No matter what your level of expertise (or the lack of it), you can be creating quality applications within the first hour!

My hat is off to these writers and editors!

All 'how-to' books should be this good

This may be one of the best 'how-to' development books on the planet.

Generating complex Office output from any development language (be it VFP, VB, etc.) can be a daunting task. The first time you try it on your own, invariably you hit a wall and think to yourself, 'how do I do this, how do I get around that, etc.'

Tamar and Della do an incredible job of covering the details. I recently finished a project where I had to generate some of the most complicated formats in MS Word that I've ever seen. (Anyone who is 'new' to Fox should also check out Tamar's "Hacker's Guide to VFP", another strong title).

99% of the time, if I did a search through the PDF version of the book, I came across a meaningful code sample that helped me out...or at least pointed me in the right direction. This book could have sold for three times the price and I'd still feel the same way about it.

Even 5 stars doesn't do this book the proper justice. It has an almost endless supply of tips and techniques. The examples cover so much of Office Automation that the book is a 'de facto' reference manual as well. I've been in the business since 1988, and average about 8-10 book purchases a year. Along with Allen Holub's compiler books and Ken Henderson's 'Guru Guide to SQL Server', I'd rate this as one of the best technical 'how-to' books I've ever seen.

I wish someone would write a good .NET applications book along the lines of this book. The difference between a valuable reference book like this one, and a good % of the junk that's been published on .NET, can only be measured in conceptual light years.

I found "Music of Silence" a perfect book to accompany me on a week's retreat to a contemplative Benedictine monastery, where the life of a day is built around the offices, or hours, from Matins through Compline. David Steindl-Rast is a Benedictine monk who has written this companion of reflective essays for each of the monastic hours, to take the reader though the day, as it were. The essays are surprisingly wide-ranging, delving down many paths, from the Zen Buddhism of Thich Nhat Hanh to Rilke. They open up the meaning of such little hours as Terce and Sext, and in doing so they illuminate the various spiritual stages of every passing hour of the day, from night to night. Returning to my secular life I found myself still pondering the hours we pass through daily, as the stages of each passing day really do illuminate a whole life lived.

While walking the reader through the daily life of a monk's spiritual journey, this author also inspires the lay person to listen to the "Music of Silence".

Every chapter deserves contemplation. The book gives everyone a direction to follow, as the hours of the day flow.

I found it even more inspirational to listen to Gregorian Chant while reading. I especially like "CHANT" by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos.

If you truly need a break from the hectic pace of today's life then this book is a must read.

It has become a permanent part of my library and look forward to reading more from this author.

The listened appreciation of time

The author discusses how time can be a deeply sacred part of the hours of our lives, and why an appreciation of time has been developed by the experts of the monastic orders. Nothing is as ordinary, or as sacred, as time. Far from being an infinitesimally small unit of measurement or a means of separating one event from another, time provides the means by which the still, small, silent voice of God may be heard. This is a book to take on a sabbatical journey.

Steindl-Rast examines the moods implied in the canonical hours of the day. I have purchased both the book and the audio tapes of the book. The ideas expressed by Steindl-Rast are positive, valuable, and applicable to daily life. Prime, for example, occurring early in the day, according to Steindl-Rast, might be considered too early and simply an oh-no-here-we-go-again complaint. (my word, not his!) Or, it can be considered an opportunity, kind of a drumroll to our work of the day, preparing us to go ahead with energy and commitment.

Steindl-Rast uses a picture by Fra Angelico, which includes angels for each of the canonical hours, to explain many ideas. He also quotes the poets Robert Frost and Rainer Maria Rilke in his explanations of ideas. The excerpts of poetry are excellent and have led me to read more of each of these poets.

The music of which the author speaks is Gregorian Chant. And the words of the chants are the prayers and meditations that express the hours.

A high school music teacher, I have found the author's defining of the roots of words to describe their applications to be an excellent way to share vocabulary with my students. I have also found many ideas about music and a positive approach to life, all of which my students seem to appreciate.

This is an excellent book.

A Pure Delight

Here is a book that I have been looking for for some time, a book that incorporates the magnificent artwork of the Napoleonic period along with a detailed profile of Napoleon. The result is magic and a pure delight to the eye. Proctor Jones has done a splendid job at merging the two memoirs of Menval (Napoleon's secretary) and Constant (Napoleon's valet) to provide a detailed and intimate account account of Napoleon. This is not a book that details Napoleon's battles or strategic genius but is a book that provides a wonderful insight into his character and personality instead. What comes across is that Napoleon was indeed human with many strengths and weaknesses and is not the ogre or monster as often portrayed by British propaganda. One can see the the unboundless energy, emotion, magnetism and even quirky habits of the man as seen through Menval and Constant. The artwork is plentiful and compliments the events as described in the narrative. This is a superb book, printed on high quality paper and an essential addition to any buff of the Napoleonic period. You will not be disappointed, only delighted.

There are numerous books on Napoleon Bonaparte, but this is THE book that I had to possess on the great man himself. The visual feast of illustrations compiled in this book alone more than justifies the ridiculously low price of the book relative to other pictorial books on the same subject. The judicious use of illustrations and the careful editing of two writing styles, one by Meneval (Napoleon's secretary) and the other by Constant (Napoloen's valet), by Proctor-Jones has transformed what could have been a boring translation of two French diaries into a vivid account of Napoleon's life as Emperor of Rome. Both accounts may have been biased in favour of the Emperor but Proctor-Jones was clever in not interjecting any of his personal opinions as editor and thereby, has created a classic work on the subject.

I will begin this review by saying that I knew Proctor Jones and liked him very much. I had the privlege to travel with him and visit many of his friends while I was living and working France. He was a wonderful man and an enjoyable companion and I will fondly cherish my memories of him.

Even today his memory is still strong for those of us who knew him and his name is a talisman which opens doors which otherwise would be sealed.

Many people claim to have access to special or unknown collections. Proctor was the real deal.

This book was a labor of love for Proctor. He set out to publish pictures that had not been seen in other books...he spent an unbelievable amount of money, time and effort tracking down unpublished art and securing the right to publish it in this book.

He then published this book himself because no publisher would print it at the level of quality he wanted. He was particular about the paper, the binding and the detail of the reproductions...

Proctor then was able to get Jean Tulard to do the preface...virtually impossible for an American author...and even launched the French version of the book at a reception at Malmaison (I was there).

Proctor never intended to make money on the book...It was his intention to bring these works to an audience who would otherwise find them inaccessable. I know for a fact that at the print run he authorized he lost tens of thousands of dollars just on the royalties and fees he paid for the permission to reproduce these paintings.

This book is in a limited print run in English and in French and when they are gone they will be gone. Just like Proctor.

Proctor I will miss you and I thank you for producing this book.

This is a fantastic book as it includes within its cover a feast of great Napoleonic paintings and memorabilia which is worth the price alone. The text is finely edited by Proctor-Jones, comprising of an interwoven thread based on two memoirs of two men who were closely linked to Napoleon. One was his secretary, C Meneval and the other is his personal valet W Constant.
Every dedicated Napoleonophile should own a copy.
