I originally planned on buying the factory manual from Ducati for my Duc907, but quickly found out that even the Ducati mechanics recommend using the Haynes manual over the factory one. Good thing, too, because the factory manual costs $80 (if they even have it in stock) vs. $29 for the Haynes manual. To top it all off, Amazon offers if for just $19 and can get it to you the next day. Such a deal, I just bought another one for my brother!

I bought this book for my 2001 900SS even though it is outside the covered year range, and I found this book to be the best Haynes manual I have ever used. It is much more user friendly in its layout and descriptions of tasks, and I found alot of good advice for the maintenance I already knew how to do, such as bleeding brakes, etc.

I checked the valve clearances, and although the book was informative on how to proceed with removing the shims, etc. I did back off from that. I plan to talk to a couple of mechanics before I actually do remove the shims for replacement. Even so, the book was there with good advice: put some heavy wire into the vertical piston spark plug hole to hold the intake valve after you remove the bottom shim!

Great manual, easy to follow with handy tips to help me out. There's not to many words and lots of pictures (a picture says a thousand words!)which make it clear what is being refered to and how things are done. It has ratings for each job so you know if youre up to the challange or if it'd be over your head before you even start! Using Amazon is excellent, easy and helpful! Recomend the manual and Amazom to anyone.

This is a nice coffee table book for any motorcycle enthusiast but more particularly an early Honda student. The book contains numerous facts from the historical development of the CB750, to its competitors of the time and its technical specifications. The book also has many inserts on related topics such as personal experiences with the machine, previous Honda models that led to the development of the bike, and excerpts on other interesting motorcycles of the time that were related to the 750. A great book to have around to read in short bursts and a must for any 750 owner interested in where his bike came from.

simple review of Jean's book

Hi. To my way of thinking, anything touched by anybody named Harley or Davidson is always okay. What worries me is what happens after Jean's generation is no longer; does the Motor Company merely then become another corporate entity, with all of the downside that implies? To me it already shows such signs as the actual families become the stuff of American mythlogy. But anyway, I'd like to see more from Jean, and for that matter any of her cousins. The families are part of a historical record and part of the fabric of the United States and in a way should be regarded no different than descendants of George Washington. (Think long & hard before jumping to discount that observation.)
Sarah Harley Ahearn should just go ahead and publish under her own name; what she does is good and worthy of such treatment. She's my age so she has sufficient time left in the hour glass to go down that road.....on two wheels.

The Harleys and The Davidsons Behind Harley-Davidson
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-15
Jean Davidson's Harley-Davidson Family Album is a great gift for anyone who wants to know more about Harley-Davidsons. While most books about these wonderful motorcycles focus on the bikes and their impact on the culture, the Family Album describes the effect of the motorcycle on the founders and their families . . . and vice versa. It's a dimension of Harley-Davidson that I knew nothing about . . . and found to be fascinating.

Jean Davidson is the granddaughter of Walter Davidson, the first president of the company, and her father was Gordon Davidson, a company vice president. She is a former dealer. She teams up with Sara Ann Harley-O'Hearn to add comments about both families. About half of the photographs were new to me, and the captions were priceless.

The book opens with family trees of Davidsons and Harleys who are in the book so you can keep track of who's who.

Then the book turns to how the families emigrated from Europe to Wisconsin in the late 1800s. Within five pages of photographs, you begin to see motorcycle images. The first classic is of Arthur Davidson with a friend holding up the fish they caught while sitting on a motorcycle and in a sidecar. The original idea behind the motorcycle was to help make it easier to go fishing. Go figure!

The text is also interesting . . . including an explanation of why the company is called Harley-Davidson rather than Davidson-Harley.

The family connections are interesting. The model called "Silent Grey Fellow" in 1914 employed the nickname for William Sylvester Harley. There's also a nice page on the first motorcycle and what happened to it through 1912.

It wasn't all easy. In 1904 a household maid raided the company's cash jar, and left the company broke. The Davidson brothers' uncle, James McLay, came to the rescue. His photograph is included.

Interspaced with the family materials are examples of motorcycles, advertisements and motion picture stills featuring motorcycles.

One of my favorite family photographs shows the chauffeur who was used to drive the founder's wives around in a sidecar. Even though the family was prospering, they preferred their bikes!

There are also photographs of the male founders working on bikes and even testing them.

The book also describes the company's attitude toward having women work at the company (single women only in the early days).

Just after I finished this book, I happened to see an advertisement for S.C. Johnson where the fourth generation and fifth generation members talked about how the company is the family and vice versa. I couldn't help but think that this observation is equally true of Harley-Davidson after enjoying this fine album.

Photography fans should be warned, however, that like most family albums, these images are often not professional grade. They are often just like the snaps that your grandparents and parents took when they were young. To me, that aspect just added to the charm of the book.

I was encouraged to take out our family album after looking at this one. I hope you will do the same.

I don't know about your family?

But mine was very connected to motorcycles. I want to thank the authors of this book for having shared their very personal family information and pictures. This book and especially these families have had a profound effect on our ever shrinking planet and it's peoples. If you read for fun you will find great pleasure in this book and "THE SECOND COMING OF AGE" by: Vedrine; a must for every Harley Davidson enthusiast.

This is a wonderful scrapbook of the history of the Harley
Davidson Company on its 100th birthday. It is written by the
grand daughter of Walter Davidson. There are a series of action
pictures depicting the family in the early 1900s including
a 1918 outing. The book explains the dynamics of testing
each motorcycle directly from the assembly line. This rendition
would make a perfect gift for a motorcycle enthusiast.

Being a self-admitted tightwad, I hesitated when first buying this book. Even though Amazon.com had the best price I found, I was still wondering if I needed to spend this much money on a book I thought I would probably never use. Upon receiving the book, many of my initial reactions were proved unjustified, for a number of reasons.

This is at first glance an impressive book, measuring almost two inches thick. Upon delving into the myriad of information in the many chapters, the true worth of this publication was quickly revealed. This is 603 pages of highly detailed and instructive material. There are literally hundreds of photographs and detail drawings, giving even a first time mechanic a chance to see exactly how each part of the machine works, is disasembled, repaired and then reassembled. Step-by-step instructions are clearly listed, in a easy to read and interesting fashion. Numerous hints and how to tips make most of the jobs easier and further enhance the value of this publication.

Another nice feature are the areas that warn the reader about possibly dangerous repair procedures and how to avoid potential injury to mechanic or motorcycle. The book also lists any problems previous models have had and what the owner can do about them. For instance, upon first reading the book there was a warning in a side bar in the chapter on valves and valve adjustments. It informed the reader that certain ZX-900 Ninja owners could have bikes that had a factory recall. Specifically, certin bikes had valve spring retainers that could fail at high engine speeds, causing what the book termed, 'catastrophic engine failure.' The book listed the serial numbers on the motor of the bikes that were affected. Unfortunately, mine was included and I'll have to pay for new retainers when the valves are adjusted. But, it's a small price to pay for something I had not know about that could of caused a loss of my life or someone elses. It was another perfect example of just how valuable this book is to those that buy, read and use it.

Overall, I don't see much that can be improved upon in this book. The text is easy to read, the pictures and diagrams are perfectly executed and the tips, how-to hints and reader warnings offer a wealth of assistance. There is a complex index and even a section in the back of the book with blank pages headed 'notes' at the top of each page. For those owners that want to perform their own service, repair and maintenance on their older Ninjas, this book is damn near as important as any other accessory you could buy and was worth every penny. It earns five stars from me.

First, I would like to congratulate my uncle on his very first novel and say that I look forward to the second one. Secondly, and without bias, I can say that this is absolutely the best book that I have ever laid my hands on, just filled with such emotion, and so real. I loved Absolution, as someone mentioned before. The ending was such a shocker as well. I would reccomend this to anyone who would watch a rated R movie (which is most of us). It was strange in some aspects to read this book, noticing lots of things about Clint (the good things) that are so similar, if not the same, to my uncle and my dad's side of the family. Great job, Uncle Will, see you soon, love you!!!

I anxiously awaited learning more about Clint as his character developed with each chapter. I laughed, cried, and even yelled out loud a time or two, especially at the end. This is an exellent story.

I really enjoyed this book because it not only gives you great pictures of police motorcycles (Which there are plenty of!), but it also talks about the equipment both on the bikes and the officers use while on patrol. I also enjoyed the section on training and what it is like to be on patrol on a police motorcycle.

This is a fabulous book! It has a full gallery of awesome color pics of police motorcycles, and eye-catching information on them as well. Plus there are sidebars covering topics like the pros and cons of each brand of police 'cycle, police motorcycles in pop-culture, the relations motorcycle officers have between other kinds of law enforcement officers(patrol car, air unit, mounted, etc.), police bicycles, and off-road police motorcycles. Great pics, great info, GREAT book. A must for any enthusiast of motorcycles, police vehicles, or just police motorcycles in general.

This book captivates a sense of adventure and transformation from the `every day' life into the enchantment of what can be. Each chapter fits as almost complete stories, which allows the power of events to happen at a timely pace. Normally, I read several hundred pages, for this type of genre, in a few hours. Monk's and Motorcycles is the sort of book that lends itself to reading a chapter at time. The author's ideas leave `food for thought.' This book reflects a sincere person who's able to convey how his life is today as it stands, partly, on the `shoulders of the lessons learned in the time that this story takes place.

When I finished reading Franklin Huffman's travelogue--with a whole section of interesting pictures, albeit a bit faded and just black-and-white--the first thought that came to my mind was: It is hard these days to conceive of a young American traveling as freely through the world, particularly in Asia, as this author (also well-known linguist and accomplished diplomat) did in the fifties. All the more reason to do it vicariously, by reading it, chapter by chapter, one more interestig than the other, and enjoying funny happenings, cross-cultural misunderstandings, lessons in ethnolinguistics, and lots of geography--the last maybe more needed now than ever. The style is direct and highly accessible; the lessons are far-ranging and memorable. For the impatient reader: Each chapter can be read separately, like a short-story taking place in a different place.

The latest (and, sadly, last) Hardy Boys story finds Frank and Joe at a motorcycle rally held to benefit a disabled young woman.
Of course, this being a Hardy Boys story, there are plenty of thrills and mystery.
Someone breaks into the rally sponsor's office, there's a mysterious fire, the Boys' friend has his motorcycle stolen, all in addition to plenty of motocross action!
Naturally, Frank and Joe are deeply involved in the case and pursue the criminals right up to the exciting conclusion!

Hardy Boys Say Farewell After 78 Years

For those of you who may not know, Motocross Madness, #190 in the long running Hardy Boys series, will be the FINAL volume in the series that began in 1927. The characters of Frank and Joe will live on in a new spinoff series, called Hardy Boys Undercover Brothers, to be released in June 2005, but it won't be the same Hardy Boys as you've come to know them. Over the years, there have been other Hardy Boys spinoff series, such as The Hardy Boys Casefiles, Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Supermysteries, etc., but those series were published right alongside the original Hardy Boys Mystery Stories series, which continued to add new volumes. The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories had gone through many changes since 1927, including changes in publishers, going to paperback, having rewrites done, etc., but they still managed to survive through it all, and a collector could count on seeing a new title come along almost as sure as counting on the sun rising each day. Now however, the sun has set, and the last volume has arrived. It's hard to believe that this series has lasted through 16 Presidents, is older than The Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge, became a series only 15 years after New Mexico and Arizona became states, and a mere 24 years after the Wright Brothers invented the airplane, and yet continued clear until the 21st Century. I'm going to miss that thrill of looking forward to the next title in the series....
