Great Intro to the Bible

This book was give to my daughter for Christmas when she was 18 mos old. It is a wonderful book depicting various stories in the Bible. They are very short and told in verse form. 'God made the land/And God made the sea,/God made the flowers/And God made me.' and 'David was/ A shepherd boy,/Who sang to God/Great songs of joy!' Each story is accompanied by a lift the flap or touch and feel picture which makes it interesting and fun for little ones. I give it 4 stars because it is in spiral bound form and the pages are easily taken apart by busy little hands. I keep it separate from my daughter's other books and read it to her instead of letting her 'read' to herself and thus removing the pages. Other than this drawback, it is an excellent book.

My kindergarted sunday school class loves it. They pay attention, then beg to read it again. I have an audio tape version that I play while I just turn the pages. Unlike some children's translations, this one is truly age appropriate for young children. The rhymes and paraphrasing are exceptionally clever.

Fantastic way to teach bible stories to children.

Original Bible Stories(unchanged) told in rhyme form. A marvelous way to teach children God's stories, and a marvelous way for them to be able to remember the stories. Simplicity in the eyes of a child. Wonderful, wonderful! Wish I had this when my children where samll.

Thank you, Bernard Waber, for inspiring me to make a great band. I know this thing says I'm 12, but I'm really 16 and all, but this book was awesome, my friend Andrew read it to me five times a day for three weeks...it's given me the courage to keep going, no matter how tough it gets, because I know someone out there has it worse than me...

I enjoyed reading the book Rich Cat, Poor Cat! It was about these two cats one is a street cat and is poor, scubby, dirty, no one pays attention to him, and he has to find his own way to live, his own shelter, food, and the other cat is a indoor cat that lives with a very rich family that cleans, feeds, give shelter, and takes care of him! Yes, I think this book is great for kids because it makes you think about all the cats out there that don't have homes! I think children would like to read this book because it teaches you things about cats and you should take care of every pet you own!

A few years back, one of the major school market book clubs published a paperback edition of this lovely book. I think it was Scholastic Book Club, but I gave my only copy to a cat lover who adopts and nurtures every feral cat she finds. She has 18 Gwendolyns, and the book made her cry.

What a great purchase this was. I love to dip into this when we go read. When I ask my 36 mo old daughter "what do you want me to read?" I can only hope she says "rolie polie olie mommy" because I love to read this. I like the case it came in as well. It makes for a great keepsake or gift.

I bought this set for my 2 and a half year old girl. She loved it so much she actually slept with it the first night. We have read night after night the "original" Rolie Polie book and she has memorized entire pages. When I saw this set I knew she would love it. It is a perfect size for small hands, gives an insight into each of the characters she already was familiar with, and the carrying case makes it just perfect. You can't go wrong with this one!

The book is very colorful but there isn't much of a plot line- then what do you expect from a 2 yr olds book right? I would say go for it its more of a picture book but the color quality is great for children. I purchased this for a little girl and she loves it to death. She's 3yrs old right now but still keeps reading or looking at the book. The box doesn't last long but its nice to get the entire set for this price.

This was my favorite story next to Scuffy the Tugboat. Unfortunately all of my books went to my older sister's kids, and they did not take very good care of them, so they are all lost now. I have my first child coming in July (Ian Gabriel) and I'm looking for a copy of this book (and from the reviews, it looks like I'm not alone). Maybe the publisher will decide to reprint it.

My son's favorite book from an infant until he could read. We have been searching for it for many years. At bedtime he could pick 3 books for reading every night and somehow The Runaway Pancake was always on the top of the pile EVERY night. He knew the story so well he would say it right along with me reading it to him long before age three. We lost this badly worn book in one of our moves and have been looking for that pancake since. We won't be happy until he returns to our family.

My daughter is a year old now and has had this book since she was only a few weeks old. She loves everything "Baby Einstein" and this is by far her favorite of all the BE books. In fact, her first word was "book" and she was holding this one up when she said it! I really think it's the bright orange tiger on the front. :)

You can't go wrong with any of the BE books. They have bold, bright pictures and poetic content. I love reading them to her but she also enjoys sitting on the floor and "reading" them to herself!

A must have!

This book is colorful, simplistic and really does teach little ones about numbers and counting. This was one of my son's favorite books. I'd recommend it along with the one about shapes. If you read these to your child starting at age one, they will most likely learn them by age two.

Good book for 21/2 years or older.

When I was majoring in education, I bought a lot of books for my classroom. I was planning on teaching small children, so I bought this book.

The back of the book says that it is for ages 1 to 4, but most 4 years can count past 5. Still, if you consider it be be for say ages 1 to 3, I think it is a very good book.

The pictures are bright, like other books from the Baby Einstein Company. The bees are cute! The text in the book is kept simple, so it is easy for little ones to comprehend.

The best way to encourage a child to read is to have books in the home.

This is a family favorite. We love the bright pictures and enjoy the interaction with our 10 month old. The pictures, as in most of the Baby Einstein collection are intriguing (looks intently with interest and points at them). Our baby has begun showing us with his fingers how many "five" is, how many "two" is, etc...What a fun way to learn about numbers!

Who can resist a Henkes book? Move over Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Julius the Baby of the World...another book by Henkes which is surely destined to be a children's classic has arrived!
We parents remember what it is like to have a treat all of our own and our reluctance to share it, and our preschoolers can certainly relate to the dilemma! "I want to share it but if I do I will have less for myself". When a mishap befalls the peppermint stick the sharing process becomes much easier and both girls in the story are delighted with the outcome. After all, Sheila Rae was planning on sharing from the very beginning. (Or so she says!)A fun story with adorable pictures.

A board book with a story

Review Date: 2006-02-02
Most board books are descriptive - 'Cow says moo...Sheep says baa..etc.'. But this one has a storyline, amusing and cleverly constructed characters, and very expressive illustrations. It is amazing that this kind of a story has been made to fit in a board book format.

The story is about two mice - Sheila Rae, the older sister, has a peppermint stick that her younger sister, Louise, covets. Sheila Rae teases her in a typical big sisterly way, and says she can have a lick if she can guess how many stripes there are on the stick. Sheila Rae knows that Louise cannot guess correctly. In the end, Sheila Rae climbs high up on a stool and some books, and says Louise can have the stick if she can reach it. But then, Sheila Rae herself stumbles and falls, and the peppermint breaks into two pieces, one for each sister. A clever and face-saving solution for both sisters who then hug and kiss.

The illustrations are simple but very cute and convey the ages and attitudes of the two characters - the smug, teasing older sister who looks six, and a smaller younger sister (maybe three years old) who follows her big sister around and hangs on to her every word, while clutching her teddy bear.

This book is perfect to read aloud with preschoolers (like Louise). Slightly older children (the Sheila Raes) can read the book by themselves. It is a very interesting book that beginning readers will want to read again and again.

If you haven't met Kevin Henkes or his little mice characters, you and your child (or your grandchild) are missing a great experience. In this book, Sheila Rae has a peppermint stick that she's having a hard time sharing. The illustrations are delightful, and the situations in all of Henkes' books are true to life, so any child can relate and learn something without a bit of sermonizing. If you like this story, try "Owen's Marshmallow Chick" and "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". Don't miss the expression in his characters' eyes as you flip through the books. Your little ones will love reading and rereading them. The board books are just right for the tiniest hands. My one-year old grandson, three-year old granddaughter, and the students in my reading classes are all Kevin Henkes fans. If you have a chance to meet him, grab the opportunity. He's a shy, gifted author and illustrator.

A favourite of young and old alike at the Watts' house, this book has it all. (Ignore the review that says Louise grabs the stick and breaks it...she does no such thing.) It's perfect for reading aloud--or for reciting by those who aren't yet reading. The brief, well-chosen text lends itself easily to expressive vocal interpretation. Loads of personality are packed into the simple, cartoon-ish illustrations. All this plus a great plot and twist on a child's level make this book one of our most cherished.

We had used signs with my daughter from about 5 months, only a few. She really started to use them back to us at about 10 months so we taught her more. For her first birthday a friend gave us this set and now she absolutely loves signs. She takes the flash cards out every day and really is so proud of herself when she gets them right. She's 13 months now and the cards in particular are definitely one of her favorite toys. I'm online now to buy two more for friends.

I really like this kit. I've had it for about a week now and have been learning the songs from the CD. My daughter is 10 months old so we've been signing for a few months but I had come to the point where I didn't know some of the signs I wanted, like "sheep" "ready" "cold" among others. The book is very helpful. It seems like signing would be obvious, just do it. But there are a lot of creative ideas in the book that I never would have thought of. So that's good, makes it more fun. The CD is good, has some really good original songs and a couple of traditional ones. Good quality. I didn't really need the flashcards but maybe we can use them or figure out something creative to do with them. I think it's a good deal because it's a good book and CD. Glad I got it.

Great kit for beginners!

I love this kit. My baby just turned 6 months old, and we are beginning to sign to her (she already recognizes milk). The flash cards are very easy to understand. My 10 year old memorized all the signs from the flash cards in a day, and loves teaching them to us. The CD is great, too. The music is very enjoyable, and the songs are simple, but very catchy; you won't get bored after listening to them several times. I love the songbook, too. It makes it SO easy to sign during the songs because you're not signing every single word. The sturdy cardboard box is a plus. The only reason I gave four stars instead of 5 is that there are two songs with "Mommy and Daddy" in them, and we all know there are many "non-traditional" families out there, and it would have been nice (and pretty easy, I think) to have words that include all children's families. Other than that, it's wonderful.

A Multi-wonderful product!

First of all, this kit is so complete. It's fun and easy to use. It comes with a great CD with beautiful and easy songs to pick up and sign to. It has a book of signs just for the songs. Then, it has great flash cards that are really easy to understand. And finally, it contains a main book of all kinds of signs which I've misplaced do to a move, but of what I remember, it was loaded with info and easy to decipher. I use the signs all the time and sing the songs and she always smiles in reconition when I do. She hasn't signed back yet, but hopefully one day I'll get my reward. If you want to teach your child to sign, this is a fun and easy place to start. It also has a great free website in it that you can refer to. I really enjoy using the kit and would give it a higher rating, but I misplaced the main book before I could use it and so I can't properly rate the entire kit, plus I don't know yet if it works.

I have been signing with my kids for 5 years now--and my kids now are 5, 3, and 1. I was looking for songs to use with signing besides the basic basics..and this book has it all. My 5 and 3 year old LOVE singing and signing the songs with me, and my 1 year old tries to sign along. My 3 year old will just start singing the songs on the cd so I see the songs as easy to remember, fun and appealing to kids. I see this as a GREAT activity to do in the car on trips and a wonderful way have fun together as a family. We have gotten through half the songs and I am saving the rest for our next trip! The signs are easy to figure out from the pictures and its just fabulous! I listened to Monta speak once and she is fabulous too! Definitely a great kit for moms that want to sign with their babies and toddlers. The cd is the best as well to add the music and fun into the whole experience! Definitely a great buy!

We love this book! We received this as a gift from my mother who is a retired 2nd grade teacher. I started reading this book to my son while he played in the tub every night when he was only 7 months old. He is now 20 months and it is a part of our routine that he looks forward to every evening. When I show him the cover he claps his hands and says, "YAAAAAAAYYYY!" This year I am sending copies of this book to all of my friends for their children. I have already started reading it to my 2 month old. It is such a feel good message. The illustrations are bright and engaging for a child or adult of any age. The best part of all is the content. Our favorite part of the book is, "You're not any of this, 'cause you're more than you seem! You are all that you think and you hope and you dream! You're a gifted creation with imagination! You're a new day desire to reach even higher! You're the feelings that start from down deep in your heart! You're the pride and the joy inside each girl and boy!" (As you can see, I have read this book aloud so many times that I know it by heart. . . .you will, too!)

Therefore the child is able to relate to being awake and playing and is then brought down to falling asleep with all his Sesame Street friends. This is a wonderful book to lull your child to sleep with.

An excellent bedtime story

Our 21 month old son loves reading this book, both at bedtime and anytime we are reading together. It starts with Elmo at the park with his Dad, and they head home to get ready for bed. Along the way, Elmo sees different Sesame Street Monsters getting ready for bed by brushing their teeth, jumping on the bed, reading to their teddy bears, etc. Everyone is getting ready for bed, and at the end, it's Elmo who is fast asleep in his bed. This is a wonderful bed time storybook, but note it's paper pages not a boardbook so be careful with toddlers who like to grab pages.

This book is a classic. All of my grandchildren have loved it. It should be on your bookshelf next to Good Night Moon.

One cannot say enough about how wonderful
Remy Charlip's books are. This book would
make a wonderful "first book" for any child,
boy or girl, to have. They are filled with simple
yet warming verse and amazing pictures.

Wonderful gift for parents of a newborn (though even some children up to 5 or 6 years old will like to hear how much they are loved - but some this age will be put off by the baby-ish-ness of it). Simple pictures of a mom and baby hugging each other. Other pairs of objects hug, too - such as cloud moms and babies, etc. Lovely rhyme about how much a parent (pictures are of a woman) loves their child.

Wonderful story, well loved illustrations!

My 19 month old daughter loves this book, and brings it to me every night. The illustrations are fun for her to look at, and the text has us snuggling close throughout. A must for any parent who loves to hug and kiss their child!

The illustrations in this book are really gorgeous and the rhyme is simple and sweet. I really like the way it goes through the different parts of the baby that the mother loves. As my daughter gets older, it will be fun to make a game of naming off her body parts as we read through the rhyme. This is a nice book for parents to read to their new babies, but I think toddlers will really enjoy it too.
