My daughter is now 18 months old. We bought this book when she was just over a year old. It was exactly what I was looking for - one picture, one word per page. I was worried because it wasn't a board book, but my little girl was so interested in it I relented and let her look at it independently. She's done very well, but she loves it so much it is falling apart! I'm sure this book has increased her vocabulary greatly and I can't recommend it enough!!!

Sam loves it!

My daughter Sam absolutely loves this book! I thought it would be too long and would not hold her attention, but it's great! She enjoys flipping through the pages, and with so many pages to flip through it holds her attention longer than other, shorter books. The pages are surprisingly sturdy too.

One of my 1-year-old son's favorites!

We got this book as a gift. I thought it was an awful lot of pages for a 1-year-old, and it's not a board book. But it's among my son's top 5 favorite books, and it's proven to be quite sturdy. With just one picture per page, it's very easy for him to focus and learn while we read together. He especially loves the animal section at the end.

A must for Sams and non-Sams alike

This book is great! We got it when our son, Sam, was first born and it was thrilling to see how he progressed through the book over time until he could name every picture. I love the concept of having only one picture on each page, which sounds boring but is exactly what those budding minds need.

This is a great book for young children who aren't yet into books or won't sit through a story. The simplicity of the concept keeps them occupied. I only wish it came in a board book format.

A Perfect Book

I ordered this book for my son. He absolutely loves it! He brings it to me every night so we can read it together. He knows ball, cat, dog (sometimes known as woo, woo)and even plane. It is perfect when children first start to put words together. I love all the books by Yves Got. My son learns a great deal from them.

Santa Mouse is a classic childern's story that still holds up well today. This book is a timeless and wonderful story of a little mouse that thinks enough to give Santa a present. Because of his thoughtfulness Santa asks him to be his helper. Because of his thoughtfulness the story as great meaning at this or anytime of year. The illustration are just as good as the story. If you can find the book buy it. You will not be disappointed. Makes an even better gift and chances are whom you may be giving the book to does not own this wonderful story. Appropriate for childern ages 1-8.

My 17 month old checked this book out from the library and after 3 weeks of having it at our house, she couldn't live without it. This book has beautiful, peaceful drawings and really helps her relax at the end of the day. By the end of the book, she is usually right on the verge of falling asleep herself. This CD is fabulous with its one fault being that there isn't enough of it!! The songs are catchy and fun and the instruction book with the accompanying signs is clear and very easy to understand. I love the update to the classic Itsy Bitsy Spider and the original songs by Susan Z always make my baby smile! The signs will help us to communicate better long before she can talk. We've seen it work for other parents to prevent tantrums because you can more easily meet the childs needs...or at least understand what they are asking for!

I used this guide and CD for my now 3year old twin daughters and they LOVED it!!! I highly recommend using sign language for your baby...for us it especially helped one of my girl's who at 16-18 months was easily frustrated because she couldn't communicate...signing helped eliviate a lot of that frustration. My girls also LOVE the music and always say "it's Susan Z" when one of her songs is playing...thanks for creating such a great product!

We've been listening to it since our son was a newborn and he started learning his first signs when he was around 6 months old. It makes practicing signs FUN, which is essential to the learning process! Susan Z. puts a new spin on old classics and mixes in some original songs as well. I highly recommend this CD to any new parent.

My seven year old daughter and I finished this book last night. She was very sad to have it end. What a wonderful account of the devastating storm that hit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague and the relief efforts to rebuild the islands and the devastated wild pony population.

It was very heartwarming to read in the epilogue excerpts from actual letters of children that sent in their hard earned money to buy back the ponies sold at previous Pony Penning Days to replenish the wild herds of Assateugue. These children and others like them preserved a tradition that had been maintained for over 100 years and because of them continues on today. In fact, Marguerite Henry dedicated this book to those very children that made it all possible.

Marguerite Henry does an excellent job of using local dialect in the telling of the story, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. You can not help but become involved in the characters and their concerns become very real to you.

I read this book many many years ago and had forgotten a great deal of the story. One of the things I did remember was Misty being put in Grandma's kitchen to wait out the storm.

If you are like me and read this book many years ago I encourage to reread it. You will be glad you did.

Another great book!

This is the true story of Misty, a famous horse who gave birth to a foal named Stormy during a raging, devastating storm. The book then presents an accurately detailed account of rebuilding the island of Chincoteauge after the storm.
The plot of this is exciting and suspenseful book twists just to the reader's liking, and has times of slow sadness. The odd regional colloquial speech of the characters may sometimes confuses the reader, but it is so well written you it presents a mental picture better than a movie.
This is a very interesting book to me. Its many scenes convey many different emotions: some humor, some happiness, and some intense sorrow. I am also extremely inspired by Paul Beebe, who shows courage and self-control as I would like to. It is a favorite of mine, and a worthy addition to any bookshelf.

No pony would want to be pregnant in the middle of the big hurricane that killed almost everything in Chincoteague and Assateague. Paul and Maureen love the fact that Misty is going to have a baby until the storm hits. When Paul and Maureen leave Misty, everyone is extremely worried. Misty needs to find a way to survive along with her unborn baby! This is a wonderful story that will have you hanging on to every page. I recommend this book to anybody who has read Misty of Chincoteague or anyone who likes horse stories.

The book is worth the price for so many reasons. It is uncomfortably true, and hits you funny bone. To see the first anatomically correct baby is worth the price. It reminds me of Mort Walker's belly button story. I recommend you spend the money for a brief tour in the land of new parents. You can always wake up screaming later.

I am not sure how we could laugh at this book. What we are able to laugh at now is going to be real and not so funny next month when our first child arrives. This book (and the strip in general) touches on so many truths and makes us able to enjoy them, almost cherish them. This book also has practical applications. While learning about various things in our child birth prep class, we related experiences to those found in The Super-Absorbent Biodegradable Family-Sized Baby Blues Treasury. So funny and even heartwarming, we are buying it for everyone we know who is expecting.

This collection rocks -- its right on par with the Calvin and Hobbes big book collections. It's worth the extra cash for the color comics and the extra content. Half-way through the songs included and you'll be laughing on the floor.

A must read for new parents, old parents and anyone with young kids. Here's to hoping Kirkman and Scott put out a few more big book volumes!

This is not exacly a book for kids and much as I liked some of the other Moomin books, I used to hate this one. Only after my visit to Finland this year and seeing the museum of Moomins did I re-read all the books.

I fell in love with them. Totally and permanently.

If not for anything else, get this book for the story of the Hemulen who loved silence. I actually had tears in my eyes when reading it.

Beautiful, warm, mature and full of hope, like all the other Moomin books.

I picked up this book because I thought I hadn't read it before, wanting to see the Moominvalley books through adult eyes - not to have my childhood memories of favourite books tarnished. As it turns out, I had read "Tales from Moominvalley" before (the fungus-covered granny was the trigger for my recollection), but I was really relieved to find that Tove Jansson's books are just as good as I remember - and there is, I think, even more for the adult to appreciate and enjoy than there is for the child.
I generally dislike the short story genre, but not when it's done like this. Every short story is simply that, a short story; not a contrived literary exercise with the obligatory "twist in the tail". Jansson's stories are charming little gems, full of wonderful moments and images, thought-provoking and touching. Her characters are often the lonely, the lost, and the troubled, and she makes you feel for them and understand them, without ever becoming ridiculous or sentimental. The tales about Snufkin and his tune and the Fillyjonk who believed in disasters are shining examples of this. But Jansson can write humour and happiness just as well, as the tales of the invisible child and the fir tree show.
I really can't speak highly enough of this book. Jansson's wonderful insight into people, her spare, deft prose, and her brilliant imagination make a great combination. Buy it for your children or for yourself.

Tales worth telling

As many readers have noted, Tove Jansson's Moomin books may be appreciated by adults as well as children (particularly children who are of a quirky, thoughtful bent, in grades 4 and up.) The "Tales" is a late collection of short stories and not a complete novel like most of the other ones (beginners should start with "Comet in Moominland" instead), but it contains all the characters we know and love from the series. As usual, Jansson deftly captures the exact mood of the time of year portrayed in each tale, as well as the complicated inner workings of the misfit characters, with a few deft words. Two of these stories are absolute masterpieces. The first is "A Spring Tune," in which the fiercely independent Snufkin is prevented from writing a melody by a lonely, talkative squirrel. The other is "The Fir Tree," which comes at the end of the book and is perhaps the finest Christmas short story I have ever read, which is praise indeed. (Were ever layers of irony so superb? All writers take note of this one.) In between we get an offbeat collection of curious tales, not as memorable perhaps as the novels but jolly good fun, and emotionally pure like all of Jansson's amazing body of work. How else to describe it? Read for yourself.

The thing about Georgie is that he is one of the most endearing characters you'll ever meet. He's got the normal problems of a boy growing up: jealousy when his best friend befriends another boy and wants to include the new best friend in the dog-walking business that Georgie masterminded; the worry that his parents will like the new baby they're expecting better than they like him; and being assigned to a project in school with the meanest and most non-participatory student in class--Meanie Jeannie. While Georgie explores the trials and tribulations of growing up, the narrator tugs at the reader's conscience regarding the other thing about Georgie. Georgie doesn't dwell on it because there's nothing he can do about it, and the narrator wants to heighten the reader's awareness, not their sympathy. You'll come away from this book empowered for having read it and fallen in love with Georgie, and his family and his friends, who lovingly raise their own consciousness against the enemy of discrimination.

Georgie stands tall--a great read for all

First time novelist Lisa Graff covers Andrew Clements territory with this story about a fourth grade dwarf. While George Washington Bishop's dwarfism has always been a reality, it has never been an issue. Until now. He is concerned that his soon to be baby sister or brother--dubbed Baby Godzilla in his mind--will one day outgrow him--literally. He is falling out with his best friend, Andy, and can't seem to find a way to end the fight. And the only person interested in being his friend is Jeanie the Meanie, and she has a strange way of showing affection (like signing him up against his will to play Abraham Lincoln--he tallest president ever--in the school play.)

Once I started this book I really couldn't put it down. Graff does a fantastic job of making Georgie a character the reader can sympathize with without pitying. The Thing about Georgie is a great recommendation for middle grade readers, boys and girls, for we are all little in a big world.

I read this book aloud to my daughters, ages 8 and 6. We ALL loved it so much. We couldn't read the book fast enough so we started reading twice a day...each morning before school and every evening before bed. We discussed Georgie and Jeanie the Meanie at the dinner table as if they were real people. My daughters loved the intro to each new chapter...how clever! Now my daughters want a bedroom like Andy's new room. Lisa Graff is quite smart and engaging. We cannot wait to read more of her work!

Georgie's been overlooked plenty in his life, mostly by strangers. He's nine and only 42 inches (3 and a half feet) tall. He has a medical condition called dwarfism that means he's a lot smaller than most kids his age and that he will never be as tall as his average-sized parents. Some people look over Georgie's head or turn the other way, or just think he's a lot younger than he really is. Sometimes, this is mean, but mostly, they're just uncomfortable and unsure of what to do or say.

Since kindergarten, Georgie's been buddies with Alex, and he knows that his musician parents are always there for him. But now he's feeling overlooked by his loved ones too. His mom's pregnant, his best friend's mad at him, and his partner in class is known as Jeanie the Meanie. What's a kid to do?

THE THING ABOUT GEORGIE is fun and sweet. Readers will definitely want to befriend Georgie, especially if they know what it's like to have a new baby brother or sister. This is a notable debut, and I look forward to Lisa Graff's next book!

The Thing about Georgie is a great book, and Jeanie the Meanie really lights up. Georgie finds out that "Baby Godzilla" isn't going to be so bad after all. Written by an 8 1/2 year old.
