This is the ONLY book I remember from my childhood. I checked it out of my elementary school library as many times as I was allowed. As an adult, I found it at a garage sale for a nickel and snatched it up.

Perhaps it was feeling that I was in the wrong family by some evil accident. I've been in therapy for many years, and needed every minute of it, so that feeling was accurate.

Perhaps it was the feeling, which also proved accurate, that my life would improve as soon as I got my own friends who cared about me which happened in early high school.

I held fiercely to the spirit of this book for many years.

When I found it, I took it to my therapist to prove to her that, even when I was little I felt strongly about these issues.

I also loved school and considered it my saving grace.

I read voraciously as soon as I learned how. And this is the only book from early on that I can clearly remember.

Anyone who wants to start a lovers of Little Witch club, get in touch with me.

I still read LOTS of fantasy books.

I have vivid memories of reading this charming book. The author was the Children's Librarian of the library I practically lived in as a child in Northport, NY. She was perfect in that job. Knowledgable, enthusiastic and devoted to creating life long readers. She certainly helped me become a passionate reader for life.
I can't wait for my granddaughter to be old enough ot understand this story. It will be a "must read" at Halloween.

I, too, read this book countless times as a girl, at least 45 years ago. One of my favorite things to do on a rainy or snowy day was to get in bed and enjoy this story. I would get the warmest feeling from the way the story turned out, but also found the situations where Minx and her friends fooled around with the potions to be very exciting! I found a copy in our library about 15 years ago, but no more, so I started the quest to find one for my daughter, not knowing the author. My daughter's name is Anna Elizabeth - could it have been in my sub conscience? Hurray for used book sellers!

Wonderfully enchanting!!

I read this book for the first time almost twenty years ago and have very clear memories of checking it out from my school library. I absolutely adored it as a child ... and then forgot about it for years.

Then, one day not long ago, as I was making a rather boring lunch, I remembered something about peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. Where on earth did that crazy notion come from? I tapped my fingers on the counter and mused about it. And then, I remembered: I had gotten the idea from a wonderful book about a little girl who grew up as the daughter of a witch. A family befriends the girl, named Minx Snickasee, and feeds her those peculiar sandwiches ... and I had so wanted to be like Minx that I drove my mother crazy with a peanut butter and lettuce phase of my own.

I tracked down the book again and unearthed the most enchanting old library copy. I've since read and re-read it, and I adore it as much as when I read it as a child. As an author of books for children (and frankly, as a quintessential nostalgist), I can't tell you how much I admire what Ms. Bennett has done. 'Little Witch' is an imaginative, funny, tender story that does not condescend to its audience, which is so very important in books of this genre. I can't recommend it enough.

And Snickasee! What a delicious name. The whole story is such a treat.

I wish I could give it 10 stars!!! I fell in love with this book the first time I read it. It tells the story of a little girl who has a real Witch for a mother. All she wants is to be normal and finally gets a chance at it. Her adventures and struggles are heartfelt and engaging and I found myself wanting to be her friend. The fact she only had one dress didnt stop her determination to get to school and as an adult I love the message it sends to children. I read this book so many times as a child, I lost the cover to it and was surprised to see it again after all these years. It is truly wonderful to find others with an affinity to peanutbutter and lettuce sandwiches also. Hahaha. I recommend this book to anyone whether you have kids or not. I gave my copy to my niece, who loves it as well, in hopes she would share it with her younger sister. She lost it when my sister moved so I am buying another one today to keep the tradition going. The Little Witch has been always been one of my favorites and should be mandatory reading material in schools to teach compassion and to stimulate the imagination. How many times have you looked in a mirror, made a wish and just knew somewhere deep in your heart it would come true?

I really only got this book as an 'extra' purchase, to qualify for free shipping. However it has become an unexpected hit with my 16 month old who can now identify most of the animals from the pictures, and she will ask for this book over and over and over again.
The book includes some rather obscure animals, which probably wouldn't be on my 'introductory list' of animals for a young child. My list would probably run "lion, tiger, bear, cat, dog" (which are also included)... rather than the "gosling, chinchilla, parakeet, egret and kookaburra" which you'll also find in this book. My husband and I have both learned a few new animals as well!
All in all and great buy that keeps my daughter entertained for hours.

This is the 2nd book that I've read by Elizabeth Pantley and have enjoyed reading both of them. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't believe in spanking.

I'm only slightly more than half-way through this book. However, in the last three days I have used techiniques from this book (on my three year old) and all three times successively. In my opinion, books of this nature are really psychology books (how to deal with another person, in this case a toddler/child, and how to put things into perspective for ourselves). Most everything here we already know, but in the heat of the moment will virtually never have the ability to bring it into action. BUT this book makes you think AND act. That's because the written word is very powerful. Also, some of the ideas will not only help you have a better relationship with your child, but with other adults as well.

I don't agree with everything in the book and some of the solutions are not right for me, but the book certainly got me thinking and to be more creative in my parenting.

The No-Cry Discipline Solution is a real solution.

I can only say good things about this book. Before you conclude that it is just another attachment parenting book with obvious advice or a too-soft approach, I urge you to read it in its entirety. Particularly, I urge you to read this one with an open mind regarding your own behavior and your pre-existing parenting beliefs. Pantley manages to help the parent via validation of parental feelings and reactions while providing sound, behaviorally-based, sensitive strategies for raising a happy, kind, thinking individual - which is what we all want, isn't it? This one's a keeper for reference too, as there are wonderful summary pages that can help at a glance later. Pantley's approach is perfect for those of us with one of the 15-20% of children that are emotionally sensitive (Also see Elaine Aron's book, "The Highly Sensitive Child").

When she says "no-cry" I think this time she is talking about the parents not crying, my twins would bring me to tears of anger and frustration. This book really should be called the "No-Angry Parent book" she really helps you, the parent, understand how you could love your children so unconditionally and still get SO angry by thier behaviors!! She has helped me understand "why" they behave the way they do and gives actual tools/skills to use to help cope with many different situations. My 3 yr old twins really respond to the "Talking Mommy hand" when I need to get thier attention. A must read for any parent of a toddler (or 2!)

The book has good information to use at all ages; but, it did not provide the understanding behind childrens behavior that I hoped for. It did provide thoughtful solutions and reasons why we must control our own behavior. I recommend it as a useful tool; but, more as common sense rather than an eye opening experience. I was also hoping for more information regarding sibling rivalry.

A must read for anyone with type 1 diabetes, or who knows someone with type 1 diabetes, or who likes to read a great book.

I was driving when my 8 year old daughter announced that "Stacy has type 1 too, mom!" "Who is Stacy?" I asked her. "Stacy, the babysitter..." she replied. I started to tell her she didn't have a sitter named Stacy when I realized she was talking about the book she was reading, The Truth about Stacy. How cool! My daughter has type 1 diabetes and had found a heroine who she could really relate to!

We got other BSC books from the old series to read (not the graphic novels), but they hadn't been updated the way the versions Raina Telgemeier illustrated and adapted. Kudos to Raina, who took the time to learn about type 1 and make sure the information was up to date and accurate.

I love the BSC, and the earliest books in the series are my favorites. Ann Martin is one heck of a writer, and this third book in the BSC series tackles some serious issues - Stacey's struggles with diabetes, moving to a new town and fitting in, the loss and re-gain of old friends. A subplot in this book is the girls dealing with a copycat club called the Baby-Sitters Agency that threatens to put them out of business.
Ann, I wish you had written every single book in the series and not used ghostwriters for so many of them!

Also the whole club is faced with a problem...some one else has started there own baby sitters club!!!!!!!
Now this wouldn't be so bad if that club wasn't getting more people calling them....and then when that club pays a trick on them the baby sitters club knows the other club HAS to go!!!

A great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversity

Dirty Sally
Whoever you are is great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversity. "Culture" basically refers to commonalities that run through a group of people with a shared heritage. Sometimes children probably believe that her culture - way of doing things - is the "right" one and that others are a bit "funny." As you read Whoever You Are, you can begin to look at other cultures with your child, aim for an appreciation of differences. Eventually, this will lead to an increased appreciation of the incredible variety of human attributes, flexible thinking, and less prejudice and stereotyping. This type of conversation has to take place. That is why I wrote a children's' book entitled, Dirty Sally..The untold stories of mixed race kids who find a new identity, love, faith and forgiveness through GOD.
There is an interesting story behind the title. I was often taunted or teased about being biracial. Some of my family members and friends called me Dirty Sally. Dirty Sally is an old slavery term used to identify the descendants or offspring of Sally Hemings, a former slave and the late President Thomas Jefferson. Sally Hemings was biracial her mother was ½ white and ½ black and her father white. This book focuses on the misconceptions surrounding racial identity and the importance of choosing one's racial identity. Dirty Sally is a must read not only for inter-racial families, but for all parents hoping to instill in their children a sense of understanding and compassion. I believe that change requires resistance and within that process we can help heal some of the wounds that continue to inflict on racially mixed children. I am the parent who picks out books for the kids, whether it's at the library or the book store. It's not very often that my husband comments on my choices but this one he came to me right after our 3-yo daughter's bedtime and said how wonderful it is. The text is so lovely and tender, and the illustrations are so rich and lifelike. It really gives a sense of connection to both nature and family roots. A real pleasure for kids & parents alike.

A heart warming masterpiece

Patricia MacLachlan creates a heart warming masterpiece through a simple country family's connection with each other and their land. All the Places to Love begins with Eli's birth and his first view of the countryside his family calls home. Eli would soon grow to love this countryside through his experiences with his mother, father, and grandparents. They each have a place on the farm, which holds a special place in their heart. Mama loves the hill where she can see the sun rise on one side and set on the other. Papa love the fields and working in them. Grandma shares her love for the river with Eli as they sail notes down stream to one another. The barn grows special to Eli's heart after sharing experiences with Grandpa working in a place that brings joy to his life. Eli creates his personal getaway where the spring rains come and turn the meadows into marsh. The paintings by Mike Wimmer combined with the words by MacLachlan capture the passion filled anticipation of Eli as he awaits the birth of his baby sister. Eli is eager to show Sylvie "all the places to love."

The other reviews did a great job describing this book. I agree with what they said about the beauty, emotion, and love in this book. Here are my top two reasons why this is an important book:

1. Richness of language. Developmentally, if children are exposed to language rich in vocabulary, structure, and grammar, it helps in so many ways. If you read a sentence each out of stack of random Disney, Sesame Street and other character books they all sound the same. If that is all children hear they miss the richness of our language, and actually their ability to think in complex ways is affected. If you read a sentence each of books like this, you hear the difference.

2. Exposure to experience. If you read Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods, you are familiar with the theory that children today have much less real contact with the natural world, and it is affecting them. Even in my own experience, I got to poke in creeks and catch crawdads, hike in woods by myself, eat warm tomatos and corn right out of the garden, and ride my bike all day and stop by the side of the road to eat the lunch I packed. My kids won't have those experiences, and even a school trip to Sunnydale Farm so the kids can line up and pet a cow won't make up for not having the experience of being alone and self-directed in a natural environment. This book doesn't, of course, replace a first hand experience, but I believe can give children some sense of an important experience in our cultural history that most children will not get any other way.

I slip this book into the bedtime rotation a couple times per month. Of all the Berenstain Bears books, this one elicits the most uncomfortable looks from my two, young boys.

That said, the book touches on the value of the truth as well as the problems that result from being a tattler. The book is a great tool for reminding children about values and acts as a springboard to discuss real-world issues.

The best of the Berenstain Bears books can help a parent reemphasize good values and good manners. This book should be in your collection.

I remember the Berenstain bears fondly from my childhood. The books are entertaining with nice illustrations, bright colors and the always interesting...talking bears. They introduce life lessons without being overly preachy about. Our two year-old remembers the lessons and we use them regularly to remind him when he slips up. He is just figuring out how to lie ("mommy didn't give me vitamin yet"). He understands when we compare what he says to the book he knows so well. We've got a bunch of these books and we plan to get all of them!

This was a great book. Sometimes you can tell your children something many times, and a book or children's show can suddenly make it click for them. Lots of good lessons here-- always tell the truth, lying breaks the trust between people, and lying makes things complicated and leads to more lies, i.e. When Brother & Sister are asked what happened for the second time, they can't exactly remember how the story went the first time they told it! Stan Berenstain had a wonderful talent for making a life lesson entertaining.

Inspired by a true story, Marguerite Henry continues her literary tradition--showcasing a love of horse (and mule) flesh for young
adult readers. Unlike the homespun crises in MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE
this story takes readers into the harsh world of professional horse racing, with its stark risks and grim realities. Set in Okalahoma then in Kentucky in the 1920's this story relates the birth and racing career of a thoroughbred whose smaller stature causes him almost to be overlooked for serious training. Fortunately for horse and owner, Black Gold is loved by his young jockey, Jaydee--an Irish youth who recognizes the colt's potential and often argues with his adult trainer.

There is inevitable conflict over the horse's training and career
among the men who admire him--a struggle of wills, knowledge
and equine insight which result in Jadyee's psychological coming-of-age.
This YA weepie provides a realistic lens on various aspects of life around Track--culminating with a running of the historic Kentucky Derby itself. Horse and Youth must demonstrate that it's the size of the heart in each one, working as a team, which ultimately matters in a highly competitive world. Even adults are advised to keep a hanky handy as Henry's tale unfolds.

It was great! I loved how it was Real and how U-See-It's colt (Black Gold) was able to get back in raceing, and how the trainer and the jockey kept their hearts up when there was bad time. It was a great book. I read it really carefully that how good it was! I recomend this book to everyone, even non- horselovers. Really read it, i mean it. P.S it was a ture story.

I felt very sad reading this book because all the story characters died. But I liked the book alot because Black Gold won a lot of races and you see it. My favorite part was when You See It had her colt Black Gold.

Black Gold is a wonderful and exciting book written by Marguerite Henry. This book takes place in the early 1900's. It's main settings are in Oklahoma in the Skiatook Derby and in Chickasha. It also takes place in Kentucky in the Kentucky derby and on the Idle Hour Farm. This book is based on a true story about a racing horse named U-See-It and her colt named Black Gold. One of the most important events in this book is when U-See-It is banished from all racing tracks in the United States because her owner, Al Hoots, refuses to sell her at a claiming race. After that, U-See-It is sent to Kentucky to have her colt, Black Gold.
Black Gold becomes a great racing horse and wins the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, Black Gold is injured from a quarter crack in his hoof. As time goes on, Black Gold's leg falls off and Black Gold eventually dies. He has a burial ceremony and is buried in the middle of a field in New Orleans.
One of the main conflicts is a person to person conflict because Black Gold's jockey, an Irish boy named Jaydee Mooney, can't agree with Black Golds trainer, Mister Webb, about how to fix the quarter crack. I really enjaoed this book and I think you will too. Marguerite Henry did an excelent job of writing this book. So go and read Black Gold!

I loved this book. I sent copies to both my sisters, one of whom was pregnant at the time. During my first pregnancy, I read all the how-to and technical birth books. During my second, I read these stories, and they gave me just what I needed. I hadn't known anyone who birthed naturally, and these stories filled that place for me.

This book's stories are inspiring and very educational - if you are thinking about why you should try for a natural birth, these stories will help inspire you! Very easy read - stories are from real Moms and usually no more than a few pages at a time.

Sheri Menelli has compiled a wonderful collection of natural birth stories in her book Journey Into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth. Each story is written by a mother in her own voice and concludes with A Mother's Guidance and Additional Thoughts sections giving additional tips and advice to help you arm yourself with the support and guidance you need to have a natural birth.

Many stories are so touching they made me cry, but the practical tips and experiences of those that have gone before are priceless. Having a natural birth is not for everyone, but the fact that we hardly ever hear an inspiring natural birth story fills the whole process with fear for many first time mothers. If we can just trade that fear for education and preparedness I believe many more women would opt for a more natural birth experience. Menelli has provided women with a book that is both educational and inspirational. By reading these stories while preparing for birth, mothers can feel empowered by their decisions and know that others have gone before them and had a beautiful, natural birth.

This book, about natural childbirth doesn't portray 100% positive experiences. The women's accounts are still filled with testimony of their doubts, fear, stress, pain, and often complications during childbirth. I bought this book hoping to prepare my own mental attitude for a more calm and comfortable 3rd natural childbirth. My first two births were already more calm and comfortable than most of the testimonies in this book so I found the stories frightful and reminding of the painful memories.
