I purchased my own copy of this book after the friend who lent me hers wanted her copy back. I use this book, not because I'm trying to get pregnant (or avoid getting pregnant, for that matter), but because it's important to me that I really get to know my own body, how it works and what its processes are and what it's doing from day to day.

I can't vouch for the effectiveness in achieving or preventing conception, but if you as a woman are interested in getting in touch with your body and the amazing functions it performs throughout your cycle, then I would definitely recommend this book for you.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I have been charting my cycles since the fall of 2005 with this book. We at first used it to avoid pregnancy and then used it to get pregnant. We are currently using it to avoid once again. I feel so much better about my body and am in tune with it that I don't need to chart to know when I will ovulate, get my period, or if something isn't right. You can definitely use this as birth control as long as you follow all of the rules. Or if you break them use a back up method. The book is easy to read and understand. There is also a website for charting questions/help. You can also keep your charts on your computer.

For Girls Who Think They Will Get Pregnant As Soon As They Stop Taking the Pill

My husband and I are planning to get pregnant in the next few months. I have always thought when I wanted to get pregnant I would simply go off the pill, begin ovulating two-weeks later, have intercourse, and voila! This book made me realize I might have spent months or years trying to conceive with that plan or I may have incorrectly believed I was infertile. If your goal is to get pregnant as soon as you start trying, READ THIS BOOK!

Awesome book.

Great book, I have never had fertility problems, but I did buy and read this before conceiving my second child and we conceived the first time we tried. I am now very aware of my cycle and when I am ovulating.

Not just for baby planning - read now!

You don't need to be planning to get pregnant to read this. I wish I had read this in my 20's, but was so happy that I did a few months before I started trying. This method can be used for birth control and just to understand your body better. You will be happy to have this information for so many reasons and so happy that you starting thinking about your body (not just your fertility). I would recommend it to anyone 18+, and wish there was a version for younger women with all the meaningful information about your body and cycle.

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
A very readable, moving testimony to what one person can do to "make a difference" in the world. We have given many copies as gifts.

The cover and title make it sound like a chick book. This is a book for everyone. There is high adventure throughout. The story is amazing and will touch your heart as well as your need for speed and your need to identify with various tough guy heroes. The tone stays mostly neutral on the pros and cons of the Islam/US strife, just sicking to telling the story. You will not want to put this book down.

A perfect book, made me rethink my world

A perfect read - I don't even know how to accurately describe it. The incredible impact one person can have on the world. I finished reading a few days ago and it has made me constantly think of my life and what I can do. The writing isn't perfect but it isn't bad and I think it gave the book a REAL quality. It didn't feel overly written and composed. Don't get so caught up in grammar and nit picky items that you aren't completely inspired. A brilliant story about an amazing individual selflessly improving the lives of others. I expect this book will be life changing .

Fabulous read! Mr. Mortenson deserves the Nobel Prize.

The book is excelent reading but please get a different version.
This version only has 580 or so pages where as other versions have over 1,300 pages. That means that this version is only half the story.
So much gets lost in translation already don't cheat yourself even more.

This is great book for folks who would like to contemplate opting for a birth experience that occurs in a holistic and non-hospital setting. Through the use of many stories -- told in first person by women who were assisted in delivering by Ina Mae or her colleagues -- and a clear discussion of how the body can be aided (or thwarted) during labor, Ina Mae helps demysticize and demedicalize the process and thereby empowers the
reader to make an informed choice about the way that they want to bring their child(ren) into the world.

I echo the praise...

...for this straightforward, informative, and beautiful book. It is proving to be a wonderful touchstone as my husband and I experience our first pregnancy. I first bought this book to show my fearful partner numerous examples of healthy, normal births. It has turned out to be a brilliant resource for me, as well. Ina May touches on topics that I, a women's health nurse, had never considered, such as my anxieties and their place in my childbirth experience. We have begun to explore that (and other issues) with each other and our midwife. We are also learning to reframe our predisposed notions of pain. More than anything, this book is preparing us to be truly present for whatever experience we may have. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to any future parent, no matter what kind of birth the are planning.

I obviously don't need to write an extensive review with the amount already presented here. This is simply the best birth book available~ the only one you need to read. A lot of the stories brought forth so much emotion, in a good way. I also enjoyed Wise Woman Herbal for the Child Bearing Year, however, that book focuses mainly on nutritional herbs for pregnancy.

Best Birth Book I've Read

Review Date: 2008-04-08
This is a wonderful book about birth. Easy to read and filled with stories to keep it from being technical or dry. Ina May has such confidence in a woman's ability to birth. It is very inspiring to me and I believe would be for any pregnant woman. I wish I had read this in my first pregnancy, not for the first time in my third pregnancy.

Ina May does practice as a home birth midwife, but she also gives good advice and consideration to the woman who has chosen to birth in the hospital. She does not try to drive home a point about where a woman should birth, but does give a lot of useful advice about how to most effectively cope with the physical and emotional demands of labor and birth. She explains in detail the connection between mind and body, how positive thoughts and continuous, loving support can help a woman's body achieve labor and birth in the way her body is designed. Her stories and the collection of birth stories of many women balance all the "fear stories" about birth in our culture. The "fear stories" that tell women over and over that expert medical personnel and advanced medical equipment are necessary for a safe birth, are quietly and confidently dispelled by all the positive, peaceful stories that Ina May shares.

I received this on Christmas morning. I'd wanted it for quite some time, as an aspiring teacher and future parent, and thought it'd make a wonderful addition to my growing collection of children's books. I couldn't have been more right.

You Are Special is a sweet story about a doll maker whose wooden dolls take it upon themselves to dole out stickers to each other based on how they look, or their talents/lack thereof. What happens when one of the "gray dot" dolls meets a doll with NO stickers?

One of the deepest stories I've ever read, the message spans literature levels and ages, touching the hearts of both children and adults as the pages turn and the story unfolds. By the end, you realize what really makes one special, and it has nothing to do with stickers.

I cannot say enough about how beautiful this book is.

This book is my proclaimed favorite book of all my childhood. I read this book so much that I had to buy a replacement for it when I was 18 because the original was falling apart. I cannot wait for the birth of my daughter so I can read to her about the silly story of a town that receives its food from the sky until the weather makes a turn for the worse. The pictures still crack me up, and the detail is quite nice. As I grew older I searched for different foods and hidden details in the illustrations. I always liked the length of this book, because most bedtime stories seemed too short for me. I grew up an avid reader from a family with little time or money to keep me occupied, getting my amusement from books.

Seriously ? Five Stars ?

I can't believe this book has 5 stars. . I'm so confused. I bought this book for my kids for Christmas after reading the rave reviews...and I can't express how completely disappointed I am. Rather than being "whimsical" the book was more "disturbing" with a touch of "nauseating". After I read this book to my six year old she offered to take it to her school and donate it to the school library. . . that oughta tell you something.

Even better when you read it in Grover's voice

Review Date: 2008-04-30
We got this book for my daughter when she was a baby, and it became a family favorite almost immediately, especially when I imitated Grover's voice and read it to her. "Read it again, Daddy" was the inevitable response I would get after finishing the book, and there were times where "Grover" would read it 3-4 times a night. We gave the book away years ago, but my daughter -- who is now 18 -- said she always remembered me reading that book to her in Grover's voice. A couple of years ago, I surprised her with a miniature version of the book as a Christmas present, and we substituted the traditional family reading of "Twas The Night Before Christmas" and sat down and read the book -- in Grover's voice. Her two younger cousins, who weren't around when I read this to my daughter, laughed with their older cousin as their uncle used Grover's voice to read the story. There are so many great memories my family has of this book, and it's a fun read -- even if you can't do Grover's voice.

A cute concept and gentle story. However, our 25 month old grandson is bored with this board book. He never gets past the second page before casting it aside and going for Duck in a Truck, Goodnight Moon or Where's My Dog Scruff.

Try as I do to make this story more engaging for him by pointing, asking him to find things, imitating animal noises, etc., it just doesn't appeal to him.

We've already broken the binding on our first copy (my son gets so excited to point to the gorilla he manhandles the book) so now I'm going to order the box set with the book and the toy gorilla. This has also become MY favorite kids' book. It is so clever and I just love the sneaky gorilla character who just wants to snuggle up in bed! Every child born at our local hospital will receive GOOD NIGHT, GORILLA and a bib that has "Read to Me" on it! I am a retired elementary librarian and I can guarantee a positive response to this book used as a read-aloud. My not-quite-two year old granddaughter came home one evening and went all through her house calling "Rilla! Rilla! Where are you?"

There is something about this book that has stuck with me for years. I'm almost 30 years old, and still the words "to take a bath in one big tub with soap all over-scrub, scrub, scrub!" are as clear to me as they were when I was about five years old. This is just a wonderfully simple and fun book that I imagine most kids would want to read every single night before bedtime like I did. Clearly the benefits of storybook time with kids works! I highly recommend!
