If you are not already a superuser of MATLAB or a mathematician and want to choose one single book on MATLAB that also brings a solid math base, this is the one. The authors have chosen the subjects very well, with emphasys on the use of mathematical principles coupled with the use of the computing power offered by MATLAB.

In addition to a sound presentation of concepts - without however being extensive (or boring) on theoretical details that probably would not be relevant - this book addresses most areas of University Math (Physical Sciences undergraduate curriculum) with a wealth of good practical programming examples. I specially liked the chapters on Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues, those on Differential equations, Fourier analysis and the simple but very clear and didatic one on Discrete sytems.

In summary, although not a complete text, the subjects addressed in this book are so well presented that it can be forgiven for not covering some areas (like complex variables and calculus of variations, to name only two). There is no waste of pages in this book, but as a suggestion for future enhancement I would mention the inclusion of a chapter dedicated to exploring the graphing power available in MATLAB.

Also as a reference, for most needs you'll probably be able to start doing something productive right away after reading. Well worth its price!

This is an excellent book for studying advanced math. Important concepts clearly explained with good matlab examples. But I was surprised to find this book titled "Engineering Math" with the miss out of some thing like probability and random variables which are of the critical importance for Electronics/Communications students.

This is an outstanding book by an author who has been there and done it all. The psychological aspects of trading are extremely complex, and really can not and have not been adequately covered by the psychological trade writers who are not traders. Ms. Brown has the most complete summary of the positive and negative sides of trading that I have ever seen, and her writing is carefully constructed with the understanding of the reader in mind. She helped bring me back from the depths of that dreaded trader disease, burnout. Her work in this book becomes even more impressive when you read her latest book, Technical Analysis for the Trading Professional, one of the most innovative efforts that I have seen by any author. Ms. Brown is very clearly not a one book flameout!!

Buy it.

Buy it. Add it to your library. It is an excellent book on the psychology of trading, which the experts say is really what makes or breaks a trader in the end, not being a technical indicator expert, but being psychologically prepared.

Very solid

Ms. Brown really knows what is going on here. If you stray away from the moment and allow your mind to be overcome by the distractions of the world, you are going to lose. This applies to not only trading, but to life as well. It's all about your mind. To quote the great Ed Seykota, "Everybody gets what they want."

So how do you get what you want? Well, although I am still trying to figure that out, but Ms. Brown gives some great insight into how you can begin to find out, while becoming even more true to yourself in the process. Excellent book.

The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

I was looking for a good thesaurus for my 3rd grader, one that he could grow with. Good writing is all about good words and new ways of saying things. Everyone should have a thesaurus! I love this one. After receiving it, I liked it so much I wanted to buy a class set for my school. First I wanted to make sure everyone liked it as much as I did. My Mom, an elementary school librarian, praised its clear format. My son's teacher loves the pictures, the antonyms and that words are used in an example. The school Prinicipal said American Heritage is always his favorite too. After all that, I am ordering a classroom set for my son's 3rd grade teacher. I am hoping that eventually there will be one for each student 3rd grade and up!

Well structured and excellent all round book on hosted applications covering: the motivations for outsourcing; what application service providers (ASPs) are all about; ASP types, services and techologies used. Also good sections on ASP security and strategic analysis of ASP types. Writing quality is good. The author knows his subject and text is well edited. Overall, a very useful guide to what the ASPs are all about and a comprehensive introduction into the challenging world of the ASPs.

This book is essential reading for all stakeholders in an ASP scenario: providers, clients, and investors/venture capitalists. The reasons for this bold statement are:

- PROVIDERS: Chapters 3 (Understanding ASP), 5 (Network Computing and ASP Architectures), 8 (ASP Security Services), and 10 (ASP Enabling: Requirements and Fulfillment) cover the critical success factors that the ASP needs to ensure, as well as gives a good overview of what it takes to frame a value proposition to potential clients.

- CLIENTS: Chapters 2 (Why Companies Outsource), 3 (Understanding ASP), 6 (ASP Types and Services), and 7 (Managing ASPs) show what to expect from an ASP, how to determine if outsourcing to one makes business sense, and how to effectively manage an ASP after the contract is signed.

- INVESTORS/VCs: Chapters 1 (The History and Evolution of Outsourcing and ASP), 2 (Why Companies Outsource), 4 (Taxonomy for ASP Economies), 9 (Strategic Analysis of ASP Types), and 11 (The Future of ASP) make a compelling case in favor of investing in an ASP, and how to properly evaluate proposed business models.

To be sure there is a lot of overlap of material that will be of interest between and among the stakeholders cited above, but the chapters I cited will be the ones that each should read first. What makes this book so valuable is the panoramic view of the ASP industry, and the level of detail that each topic is given. The author knows his stuff, and, more importantly, knows how to clearly communicate it.

If you are among the stakeholder groups cited above this is the single most informative book on the topic to date.

It is a real pity that this book is out of print. What I like the most about it is the use of Maxwell Equations to proof many important Antenna Theory results such as Reciprocity and the treatment of the circuit properties of antennas. Unfortunately I have never been able to get a copy of it. Please IEEE, have you ever thought about a reprint?

Antenna Theory and Design provides a penetrating insight into the design and analysis of antennas. The book is unique in providing thorough and very readable coverage of many important topics that are not found, or are only discussed superficially, in other "similar" antenna text books.

Antenna Theory and Design is not a typical textbook that attempts to give a brief overview of every antenna possible. The topics covered in Antenna Theory and Design reflect the work of the author in his extensive career. Thus, some antennas, such as microstrip patch radiators, are barely mentioned because the author did not work on them. Other antennas, most notably the theory and practice of designing array antennas, receive thourough treatment that is not found elsewhere.

Approximate Dynamic Programming for practioners

Our consulting firm has successfully collaborated with Dr. Powell for years and I have seen first hand how ADP solves large scale, real world problems that would frankly be intractable by many traditional traditional operations research or optimization techniques. While consulting firms and other business jealously guard their intellectual property, it is terrific for all of us that academics are rewarded for precisely the opposite. I would highly recommend for any serious practitioner to grab a copy of this book and study it. Probably one of the best $100s you will have spent in a while.

Perspectives from the author

This book represents a paradigm shift in the presentation of dynamic programming/stochastic optimization. Classical treatments of dynamic programming/neuro-dynamic programming/reinforcement learning typically assume small "action spaces," and often assume the presence of a one-step transition matrix. By contrast, authors working with decision vectors in the presence of uncertainty often turn to stochastic linear programming. But these techniques typically struggle when applied to multistage applications. It is extremely hard to solve most of these problems without taking advantage of the presence of a state variable that captures previous history.

I have adopted the notational style where S is the state of the system, and x is a decision, using the language of math programming. x may have many thousands of dimensions for some problem classes (although the book considers many classical problems where decisions are relatively simple).

The challenge that arises when x is a vector when we use dynamic programming is the expectation within the max/min operator. Bellman's equation is typically written

V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * E{V(S_{t+1})|S_t} )

If x is a vector, we generally need the power of math programming to solve the maximization problem. The challenge is the expectation. We avoid this using the post-decision state variable, which is the state immediately after we have made a decision, but before any time has passed (bringing new information). Denoted S^x_t, the post-decision state variable is a deterministic function of S and x. If V^x(S^x_t) is the value function around the post-decision state variable, we obtain

V(S_t) = max (C(S_t,x) + discount * V^x(S^x_t)

The book provides a number of practical examples of this, but the key is that the maximization problem is now a deterministic problem. The final step is that we have to replace V^x() with a suitably chosen approximation. If our maximization problem is a linear, nonlinear or integer programming problem, we have to choose an approximation for V^x() that allows these algorithmic tools to be used.

Approximate Dynamic Programming for practitioners and education

In this book Warren nicely blends his practical experience in modeling and solving complex dynamic and stochastic problems occurring in a variety of industries (transportation, the financial sector, energy, etc) with algorithmical and theoretical aspects of approximate dynamic programming. The book can be either used as a textbook in undergraduate or graduate courses, or for practitioners to learn about recent advances in this exciting area. Indeed, I have already used it twice as a textbook for a graduate course, and on the other hand, I have recommended it to several practitioners. Without doubt, this is an important contribution in approximate dynamic programming.

I strongly recommend the book for all practitioners facing large-scale complex dynamic programs. It is also an excellent textbook.

Excellent book on antennas (not only UWB)

This is an excellent book on antennas.
Main things to point out:
- Gives an hystorical view of (UWB) antennas. Tells how and why a specific kind of antenna was conceived.
- Presents antennas from different points of view: as transducers, as transformers, as radiators and as energy converters.
- Provides useful construction details on several particular antennas.
- States explicitly that "in many respects, our knowledge of electromagnetics is akin to the science of chemistry before the atomic theory was verified. We have the math to mix electronic components together in the right portions to generate useful results, but we really don't understand what we are doing on a fundamental level"

It is well illustrated, and is steeped in historical background which aids the understanding of antenna development. The volume introduces an intuitive but rarely seen space-time energy flow diagrams to bring an understanding of stored and radiated fields.

THis book is very well done, very nicely printed, everything - well worth the money. - the only thing I didn't like was the fact that it didn't share anything about how the artist created the specific piece (i.e. what programming language or software was used, etc)

the pieces enclosed were just fantastic, and I'm glad I bought the book.

This is a MASTERPIECE OF TEACHING something this complex in the easiest way possible!!! I had about 3 weeks to find a way to learn Inventor. I researched the author and found he was a certified Autodesk Inventor instructor for over 10 years and his course is certified by Autodesk, as confirmed on the Autodesk website. I also found these courses for Inventor 8, so I could see he had lots of experience creating the courses. After viewing the demo on the TEDCF website, I knew the technique would work, and I liked his presentation style. I purchased Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: Solid Modeling, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: Assemblies and Advanced Concepts, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: 2D Drafting and Customization, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, and Accelerated Productivity 11: Sheet Metal Design--An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11. As recommended, I listened to all of the lessons, and took notes to keep track of the big picture. There were a number of areas I would not need, so I just listened enough to know whether or not I needed it for my project. Then I organized my project and started creating my models and saw my invention come to life. It was an exciting moment made entirely possible by David Melvin's masterpiece of teaching. I go back and refresh my learning all the time. The memory jogger will search for the concept in the lessons and take you right to it. I believe the proof in his teaching style, borne of hard work and experience, is that he taught someone outside the profession to create models in Inventor 11 is so short a time!!! If you don't know how Inventor works, the program will not let you do anything. The only error messages I received were simple and easy to fix, because David Melvin taught me to the big picture, and I designed my models using his experience to guide me. My only formal training is an engineering drafting course at University of Florida in 1965. Later, I changed my major from engineering to accounting, and am an auditor/CPA. David's straight talk on concept after concept makes it possible to focus all your energy on learning Inventor in a very short time. I shall always be grateful to David Melvin for producing these courses and teaching me something I'll enjoy using the rest of my life.

Worth 10x its cost !!!

Any one new to Inventor or just CAD drawing in general will benefit from this course. Even if you are experienced with Inventor this tutorial series will help. Its also a great reference, you can jump into any topic and watch a tutorial on what you are attempting to do. I did the first several chapters on the basics and then began dong my own drawings. Open your Inventor 11 program, launch the course, and do the steps they teach you in your own drawing, pausing the tutorial at each step, you'll get a great hands-on experience and remember it. If your going to buy anything for inventor 11, then buy this first.

For those unaware of Barbara Kruger herself, her images will surely be familiar. Bold, seemingly simple and effortless combinations of black and white images, many culled from '50s magazines, and thought-provoking text catch the viewer off-guard and make one think hard about exactly what the artist is saying. Her themes range broadly over the spectrum of social disenfranchisement and human rights, focussing especially on women's issues. This book is a fantastic dossier of her collected images from the last few decades. They remind the reader anew of her potency as a critic of the patriarchal culture, and lose none of their impact when reproduced on a scale smaller than the original. Interspersed with essays charting the impact of her work, this catalogue provides copious illustrations of all aspects of her work. Many images are familiar, but also included are newer pieces, eg her later sculptural work, and other items of interest such as magazine layouts and book covers. At about one inch thick, the book is surprisingly light, all the better to carry around - after picking it up, you won't want to put it down! For those who have never encountered Barbara Kruger, this is an excellent, even exhaustive, place to begin. For those who know her work already, read this now and rediscover her brilliance.

Subversive Masterpiece

"Thinking of You" is an amazing look into the mind of Barbara Kruger, an artist that challenges the viewer's concepts of reality. Most of her work consists of a photo (usually black and white) with text juxtaposed on it. The book also contains explanatory notes on selected works and essays about the artist. Her work is very philosophical and subversive. A must-have for anyone who thinks outside the box.
