If this depressing book cannot convince people that racism is alive and well in America today, I don't know what could. Dr. Pager reports on an empirical research project in which teams of well-put-together white and black college students went job-hunting in and around Milwaukee, with one member of each team "marked" as an ex-convict. What she found is astonishing. Black job applicants WITHOUT drug convictions fared no better than white ex-cons WITH convictions; with "two strikes" against them, black men with a drug conviction had almost no chance of getting a call-back from a prospective employer. This problem was especially pronounced in the suburbs, which are gaining an increasing proportion of jobs despite the fact that many job-seekers remain in the cities. Dr. Pager also includes informative and well-written chapters on the state of mass incarceration in the United States today, as well as the massive and growing problem of prisoner reentry. With more than 600,000 people pouring out of prisons each year, Dr. Pager's book is a must-read for anyone concerned with the public policy aspects of the reentry problem. This is yet another excellent entry into the recent crop of books cataloging the collateral consequences of mass imprisonment. (See my Amazon list on "Prison World" for more.)

This book is loaded with useful information for the student of corrections, criminology and/or sociology. While this is a book rich with very well done research, Pager's honest admission that low sample numbers in her research, (which need to be expanded on to bolster confidence in results), might undermine the message to some policy makers.
Also, while Pager recommends a few ideas, the book seems to offer more in the way of what is going on and not as much about what to do about it. However, in my opinion, the paucity of solutions contributes to this as an objective piece of research.
The bottom line is that this is a very relevant and important book that should start a dialogue.

My Husband bought me this book for Christmas, knowing our relocation to France, might produce a few everday problems, especially as our command of French is rather limited. Supermarkets & alike are great, no lingo required but at the Hairdressers, The Beauticians, The Gym, etc a more 'Specialised' dialogue is essential & this little handbag size book, covers all the terms you'll ever need. It even includes some terms for him at the Barbers. Avoid anxiety Ladies, get this great little guide.

This is a neat little "code book" for civilians. It's a compact, inexpensive and grammatically complete translator of colloquial english into four digit chunks of raw thought and emotion. It's for parents, lovers, coworkers, buddies and other strangers who need to keep in touch in an increasingly chaotic and balkanized world. It's a uniquely american collision of yankee ingenuity, silicon valley magic, and berkley birkenstocks. It's not a guy thing. It's not a chick thing. It's a kool human thing.

This is a nice, thick chunk of reprinted comics from the heyday of the Dell Walt Disney duck comics by Carl Barks. The book actually collects into a single volume four of the smaller out-of-print Gladstone Comic Album series, the same series that you can still find ... although the issues reprinted here are not--to my knowledge--offered individually on this site.
In this volume you will find some classic Carl Barks stories featuring Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge including "The Land Beneath the Ground," "Sheriff of Bullet Valley," "Only a Poor Old Man (which I have heard referred to as 'Money Lake'," as well as many short Donald Duck stories know collectively as the "Mastery" stories. All of the major works are by Barks and, unless I am mistaken, all but one of the shorter stories is by Barks as well.
Bottom line: This is a good, comprehensive collection of Duck Material and worth considering.

I got this book for my mom, who was planning a trip to Hawaii. She has been before, so I thought she might want to see some of the "off the beaten path" sights, instead of the usual tourist stuff. There were a lot of interesting things in the book, though it wasn't as in depth as I was hoping for. Definitely worth taking a look at - I plan on borrowing it before my own trip to Hawaii. :)

The good thing about this book is that it talks about many of the scenic sites and other things that you can do for free. It's also good about telling you about historic societies and museums where you can find history of the culture. But most of the sites they mention are listed in the the other books that I have (Maui Revealed and The Big Island Revealed). These two books cover much more information, and cover the same information as this book, but in more detail. For instanace, this book will tell you that there's a legend associated with a certain place, and make a small mention of it, but the Revealed books explain it more. I didn't find anything in here that I didn't see in my other books. It's a good book, but unfortunately someone out-did it.

Provides same "off the beaten path" information that can be found in better organized general travel guides like: the "Unofficial Guide to Hawaii"

This book is full of little pleasant surprises hidden from the tourists to the Hawaiian islands. We espcially like the narrative descriptions of the road to Hana and the one-day drive one can do in the upcountry region of Haleakala on Maui. It also provides information on parts of Oahu where tourists hardly set foot, like the Waianae coast. We found it helpful but wish it were a little better organized by bullets or headings. The long narratives can really drag and make the book not as easy to use. But overall, it is a book worth buying for those who wish to see a little more of the real Hawaii.

This book was horrible. It had information on the simple things like dialing and you can find it all in the users manual. I didn't find it useful except for people who just don't know hoa to dial a telephone
