This update of the classic Rossiter & Percy advertising book is heading towards being another classic. What differentiates this book from many other advertising texts is that its advice is based on sound consumer behavior research findings. The reader is assured that the advice given in the book is based on fact rather than folklore.

Worthy 'sequel' to Rossiter and Percy

So many texts are useless and dry as dust because they merely `catalogue' every possible theory and every possible stream of research that bears on the subject leaving the reader thoroughly bewildered. Not this one!

The authors of this updated `sequel' to Rossiter and Percy take the same refreshing but comprehensive approach to blending theory and practical that made the original book unique and so successful internationally. Again, they don't shy away (like so many other authors do)from advancing their expert views on what theories are most useful and relevant.

The book is about the daunting task to get evidence from computers suited with the Windows Operating System. This book is split in three parts. The first part is to get a basic understanding of how things work and what kind of vulnerabilities there are on a typical windows machine. Rootkits are touched lightly although there is some information to get a basic understanding of this complex and threatening technology there could be expected more.

The second part is about analysing a Windows Computer. Tools and techniques are discussed here and some explanation about the various filesystems. There could be less focus on the "EnCase" suite in my opinion.

The last, and in my opinion best part, is about about analysing logs, logparser and how to make your job much easier in gathering information and evidence from a windows machine. A great part with a wealth of useful tips and tricks. Even if you're not directly involved with forensics.

So the authors of this book discussed the basics of foresic investigation and security techniques and also the reasoning behind them. Overall they did a good job. They are not afraid to point out some other interesting booktitles to get even more knowledge about a specific topic. However there could be less focus on "EnCase" and more detailed information about certain topics such as rootkits.

This book skillfully combines real world network security with law enforcement investigative techniques to deliver a text which will enable you to make the right decisions based on the unique circumstances and facts of each event you are called on to investigate.

I consider this book a must have for anyone in network administration, network security or on a computer emergency response team. The techniques and information contained within are, without a doubt, missing from almost all other books and training you have received.

As a law enforcement officer, I've often found myself frustrated by books that cover incident response, but never discuss law enforcement involvement, except as an afterthought. While I understand that it's important for corporate and internal investigators to have this type of information, it's refreshing to find a book that talks about the law enforcement response to an computer crime incident.

I've had the privilege of attending classes instructed by both of these authors. One of the things that impressed me about their classes is that they were able to break down complicated technical concepts into terms that cops can understand. They continue to do that in this book.

Computer crime investigators need to add this book to their libraries. I'd say it's a must have.

"I asked my friends, 'How do you date?' and soon learned that the average male's actions on a date were not far from the motivations of a serial rapist. Males were assuming what women wanted and then acting upon their own assumptions. Our society was teaching females to accept this unhealthy dating culture." ~Michael J. Domitrz

Michael Domitrz is a nationally renowned expert on dating. He travels the country teaching students, parents, educators and professionals about respect and sexual assault awareness. His life was changed when his sister was raped in the fall of 1989. He started to question how he viewed dating. Over the years he created a program to change the way people view dating, respect and sexual assault.

"May I Kiss You?" takes a look at more than sexual assault. This book asks challenging questions, provides thought provoking scenarios and presents dynamic solutions.

Whether or not you have decided to wait until marriage or think you could never be raped, this book will give you the insight you need to not only protect yourself, but to protect the person you are dating.

Michael Domitrz discusses body language and how unreliable it can be. He asks if you are sending the right messages to your dates. What is very interesting is how males and females read body language in a completely different fashion. While the male's reaction includes ideas about how the woman is very interested, the female's response will include statements reflecting her nervousness and how uncomfortable she is with a particular situation.

Recently while watching a movie, the man asked the woman if he could kiss her. How often does this occur? Should it occur more? The author thinks it should. I have to agree that women will find this romantic. Of course, I can't see that a guy would have to ask each time. As a relationship progresses into various stages, mutual respect and trust will guide more than questions. Right? The author doesn't seem to agree.

The author makes some interesting points about how you should receive consent or you could be acting under the parameters of a sexual assault. The emotional pain and trauma from a sexual assault can be intense. Victims can react in dramatic ways, drop out of school or want to move away from the area where the assault occurred.

"Sexual assault can happen when two good people are dating each other and one person acts with disregard for the other person's feelings and rights."

So what do you do if you feel you have been raped? Chapter five gives you the resources you need to take action. The author says that you always have the right to say STOP. Personally, I think you should think about what you are doing way before you need to say stop! If you don't want sex, then perhaps putting yourself in the position of being alone with a person is not a good idea. A Mob Mentality is however something to consider. Hanging around with the wrong types of people can be equally harmful.

The author also discusses "Weapons of Self-Defense" and shows how your body and clothes can be used as defense against an attack. He also explains how the body and mind shut down during traumatic experiences and shock can limit your ability to physically react to your assailant. Thinking ahead seems KEY. Going out with a group of ?good? friends on the first date seems a good idea.

The author gives excellent ideas on how to avoid being raped. Something as simple as selecting a different time of day for the date could save you years of trying to recover from a sexual assault. He discusses a variety of ways you can stay in control of your body. Even paying for half the date will give you more power or avoiding alcohol can help you remain in control. Date rape drugs are drugs everyone should be aware of so you can avoid this happening to you.

"May I Kiss You?" is not about whether you should have sex or not. This book does not discuss religious beliefs. It is about protecting yourself from having sex if you don't want sex in any given situation. It is about creating a safe environment in a world of potential predators.

Every parent should read this book and discuss it with their teenagers. No matter what your religious beliefs, this book has information that could save your life. This book deals with the realities of our modern world and will give teenagers and adults the information they need to protect their self-esteem and protect the people they love.

Highly Recommended for the Life Saving Information.

This is the place to begin. Buy this book, READ this book, and you WILL have a better knowledge of computer and network basics.

If you are currently working in this field, you'll even understand some of the things you've troubleshooted in the past - it all comes clear.

I am a programmer for a small software company. Besides programming, I also do training and I fly places and install client/server database engines (and our app) on various networks; which means that I end up troubleshooting misconfigured networks. We have tech support people who talk to IS people at different companies every day. I have recommended to my boss that he buy a copy of this book for every one of our techs. This book uses clear language and covers all the relevant subjects. It is well-organized and almost free of errors. Kudos to Lisa Donald!

This book is destined to be a classic.

I am not the most educated person in the field of computers or networking, but I am not the stupidest either. I build computers on the side and got interested in getting my MCSE. I got this and 3 other books, this book really starts with the basics. If you are getting your MCSE, you will need more than this, however this will definintly prepare you for the acronyms and vocabulary you will find in more advanced books, so that you will know what they are talking about. It is a priceless reference to me and find myself referring back to it time and time again. I have 2 books of the Sybex MCSE titles and they are both very good, I have not rated the other nor will I mention it now because I have not yet finished it. If you want to get your MCSE I recommend this book. It is fast easy reading and barring what it deals with is the most attention grabbing non-fiction book I have ever read.

This book is extremely simple, but excellent background for those who have little or no knowledge of computer networks and Windows NT. . I recommend this book for his discussions of the media and of advertising--his critique of AOL is worth the price of admission alone.
. When Radford is addressing the press, he's right on. As he accurately points out, the media's efforts to keep the populace worked up and scared yields some untoward results, for example, fear legislation. He's right on the money.
. His crusade, that we as Americans are lacking critical thinking skills, is an accurate assessment. But when he addresses matters of science and law, he's sometimes off the mark. Although he labels himself as a skeptic, it seems much of his approach is that of the modern American cynic--if you can attribute an action to base motives, then you must be right.
. On matters of law, I wish he and other writers would understand that the making of a claim, or even the filing of a lawsuit, is evidence of nothing beyond the claimant or counsel could afford the filing fee. A court judgment means something. A settlement sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. But filing a complaint means nothing.

I have to be honest, I don't watch a lot of news programs. I don't watch my local news nor the endless parade of talking heads that work the 24 hour news desk on any of the big cable news channels. There is a good reason for this . . .I was able to recognize much of what Ben Radford mentions in his book - cross pollination of products and their producers, advertising disguised as news, and that not all experts are as objective as they should be.
While Ben writes about the problems in the journalism and advertising trades, there is also the suggestion that the integrity and objectivity we desrve from the media at large will only be offered if we demand it.

By far one of the most useful books to be published in recent years, Media Mythmakers provides essential information that all people, especially those living within the USA, should arm themselves with.

The media is a powerful force in our lives - in our thoughts, our beliefs and most importantly, our actions. Radford examines this force with a critical and objective eye, dissecting its elements and penetrating the motivations, meanings, and effects it has upon civilization. Even the most cynical reader may be horrified by what Radford uncovers. Fascinating examples are provided throughout this well-written book. Best of all, however, are the realistic solutions for change.

As an editor, Radford is more than qualified to examine this realm and he does so with great skill. I was happy to discover that the book was extraordinarily well organized and written. I can see it used as a basis for many high school and university courses in journalism, communication and critical thinking. In an improved world, it might also be used by activists, media professionals, decision-makers, politicians - even concerned parents and students of life.

The reader is left with a media literacy that will serve them well throughout life and is necessary in our time. I highly recommend this book to one and all.

The fourth estate is supposed to expose nonsense in the public interest, but in this book, Radford exposes how the media itself purveys nonsense, betraying its contract with the American people.

Should be required reading for everyone -- arms you with the weapons you need to defend yourself from the daily onslought of error, half-truth, and ratings-pandering fake news.

There are hundreds of examples in this well-researched book of how the media distorts facts and displays its bias (not liberal or conservative, per se, but a coporate bias that panders to viewers who want spectacle, not facts).

Not since Neil Postman has there been a media critic who is so on the side of the critical thinker and so incisive in his critiques of the power of the media.

Highly recommended.

My son had seen this book at school-all of the kids in his class were asking for it so much that the teacher sent us all the ISBN so that we could get it if we wanted to. Its just a big pop up book/castle that fascinates my 7 year old-who is learning in his 'gifted' class how to make pop-ups and who is totally into the 'knights and castles' thing to boot. Its beautiful and it is sturdy enough that it has survived him enjoying it regularly for 2 weeks now.

I have to admit I was doubtful about this "book" when I first took it out of the box. However, the kids had just studied medieval castles in History and they were very excited when we opened the book, tied it back, and out in the middle of the floor was a castle for them to play with and explore. In this case, familiarity did not breed contempt, but aided in my kids enthusiasm about it. I was impressed with how many days they pulled it out to play with it again and again.

This is a wonderful value -- a fun fold-out castle, creatively designed and waiting for a lucky child to discover its many hidden surprises. The large but lightweight book comes with a "working" drawbridge on the cover, and is tied with two blue ribbons. You can "read" the book and let each of the four segments (including throne room, dining room, exterior, armory and bedrooms) appear individually, or you can unfold the house and tie the ribbons with the book covers back-to-back so that the castle is completely accessible as a sort of diorama. Your preschooler boy or girl will have hours of low-tech fun playing with the punch-out characters: king, queen, knights on horses, a jester, a wizard, lady, lord and dragon.

There are hanging banners, a sliding front gate, balconies, connecting doors, chandeliers, chess games, closets, hidden jewels, pop-up furniture and more. There are loads of fun little surprises here -- even a hidden passage. My advice: get this even for a little child who may tear the admittedly fragile cardboard pieces. You can always tape or glue them together, or buy another castle, but you can't always find a fun setup for little ones that requires imagination more than batteries, allowing children to act out stories in an exciting play environment.

My 5 year old was delighted to find special "surprises" throughout the castle. It is perfect for travel and packs so easy. Please note that this is not a book per se, but more of a "dollhouse". There are cut-out dragons, princes, princesses and other fun accessories. My daughters will play for hours with this castle.

The first chapter, about seeing the ball, makes this book worthwhile for anybody. The author makes a good point about hitters worrying too much over minor mechanical details when tracking the ball is so important.

Having said that, this book is about the mental aspects of hitting and assumes that you already have decent mechanics. If you are a high school level player or beyond, there will be useful information here.

If you're a coach of youth teams, reading this book will help you better coach your hitters. There are no drills or swing techniques, but the book is full of advice from the mental aspect of the game. You, as the youth coach, should be using these mental techniques to help your young hitters cope and adjust.

Hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult things to do in sports. That requires both physical and mental skills to perform at peak apacity.

For some hitters the battle against the pitcher and the defense is lost well before the ball is pitched. As a former head coach and now a hitting instructor at the semi-pro level, I have always been on the lookout for keys and prompts to give to my hitters to clear their mind of everything but a concentration on the ball and solid contact. This book gives me those cues in a simple to understand, and more importantly, a simple way of presenting those mental reminders. I particularly like the three simple questions to ask the hitter after every at bat. "What were you trying to do?", "What went wrong?" ,"What will you do next time?". The techniques suggested to get across to players the oft-repeated theme of this book - "see the ball and be easy!" are easy to understand and implement. I have been much more confident in my ability to get that message into my players heads after reading this book.

Helen Wilkie, in less than 150 pages, gives you clear and easy-to-follow guidelines for business writing, presentations, listening skills, meetings, and getting articles published. As a former Corporate Communications Specialist, I found Helen's tips to be right on the money and an excellent reminder of what effective communications should be. I recommend this book to those starting out in their business careers and to those with many years of memos, meetings and presentations behind them. If you are looking for a book on business communications - put this one at the top of your list.

When I finished reading Message Received and Understood I was thrilled to realize that I have finally found an up-to-date desk reference on business communication. Then I quickly realized that I will use many of the tools that I have learned from this book in every part of my life.

Ms. Wilkie writes with a very clear style and in a "to the point manner" that I appreciate very much. I know that I will be referring this book to many of my colleagues and clients.

Fundamentals Superbly Communicated

Don't be misled. This is a manual, not a textbook. Wilkie demonstrates in her own writing precisely the same fundamentals which she recommends to others in need of strengthening their skills. She offers "9 Rules" for:

* Better Business Writing

* Pithy Presentations

* Lively Listening

* Meaningful Meetings

* Publishable Prose

What she calls "Rules" are actually guidelines. As I read this book, I was reminded of so much of what I learned while reading the fiction and non-fiction of E.B. White. He and Wilkie seem to be in almost total agreement on how to think clearly as well as to write effectively. What gives this little book special value is its direct relevance to so many different business applications. If you are having problems with both oral and written communications, if you wish to have your "messages" be understood and (better yet) have greater impact, read and then re-read this book. It would also be an excellent holiday or birthday gift for school, college, and university students. Just a thought....

Two thumbs up! Not only does this book contains a clear explanation of a very complex subject but also it's written in a very good style. I have been working with SMS 2.0 for more than 2 years and I was forever missing a book like this - I read it overnight like a novel and several times thought - "Hey, this is how it should work ...". This book is a rare case when every word worth reading. It might be used as an introduction to the subject, as a study guide and as a reference. The latter of course doesn't substitute Resource Guide and on-line help.

Of all the resources I have used in learning to implement SMS 2.0, including classes and other books, this book is by far the best. The book is very well organized and I particularly liked the "Real World" sidebars that appear throughout the book, very valuable info! My only regret is not buying it sooner. I would give it my highest possible recommendation. Don't leave home without it!

The power of Jesus

This is the most challenging book for every Christian to read. I could hardly put it down while reading it. It covers many aspects of the Islam religion that we should know about, and gives us hope that Muslim people can and do find Jesus Christ as their Savior. I am encouraged to pray more for Mina and Javid for the work that they do, and that more Muslims will accept the Lord.

Escape from Darkness

The most effective aspect of Mina Nevisa's Miracle of Miracles (Long Wood Communications, USA, 2004) is the personal voice of a woman who stood against the forceful captivity of thinking foisted by fundamentalist Muslims. All the pains, this devout Christian woman details, stood in her path of freedom from the reckless talons of Islamic laws hunting for the religious converts in Iran. Mina's escape is indeed a living miracle that sends shivers through the hearts of many who do not yet know what it means to shun Islam in a fundamentalist Muslim country.

In her quest for freedom of thought and belief, Mina lost her friends to death by torture at the hands of Islamic authorities; her family to shackles of prejudiced hatred, and her first ever child to death before birth. It was a Pyrrhic victory for her, but her faith in Christ redeemed her from the dread of slavishly following something she did not choose. Miracle of Miracles is a touching account of her persistence in pursuit of what she believes the true path of salvation.

Mina's account of her experiences is followed by an addendum at the end of the book that criticizes sharply the logical flaws of Islam's basic teachings and tenets. She exposes the darkness incumbent on the developed world by the arrogant ideologies of Islamic fundamentalists and justifies her claims by instances from history.

Two features of the book pose a challenge to the reader's faculty of reason. First, the account of several miracles that touched Mina's life and those of her friends, family, and acquaintances, appear either contrived or just another interpretation of reality. For a nonbeliever, this certainly is a serious drawback of Mina's work. Then there is the last part of the book, which acts counter to the whole mode of reading the author's realistic account of Islamic barbarism. Mina directly addresses the readers urging on them to convert to Christian faith. Not only does this sound too preachy and unwanted in a book of mature discussion but also tames the bright image of the author's personality. Perhaps, Mina could not subdue her emotions while thinking of ways to let people out of the claws of fundamentalist Muslims.

This book is outstanding for both content and style. It presents a far more accurate picture than what is being presented by our educational institutions or our politically correct media. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Mina Nirvana as she has told the story of extreme persecution under a tyranical form of government with its extremist ideology.

This book depicts the true story of a woman who was raised in Iran in the Isalmic faith and comes to find Christianity. Though what she went through was very difficult and harsh, it's a gently written book, full of compassion and love. She gives great insights into the Islamic religion, and through her telling of the miracles that happened to her over the years, your faith will grow in understanding Christianity and God's love. I challenge anyone who thinks all religions are the same to read this book. You will understand the difference by the end. A must read! Could not put it down.

The Cost of Being a Christian in an Islamic State

This account tells of the author's conversion, marriage and flight out of Iran. She and her husband subsequently lived in Spain, the Netherlands and the U.S. The threats and harassment of radical Mohammedans follow them even across the Atlantic.

I read portions aloud to my children. They were enthralled by the miraculous accounts, especially of the salvation of Mrs. Nevisa's father. They also were given a glimpse into what it is to live under an oppressive government, like that of Iran.

As Christians, we ought not ignore how fellow believers around the world must risk their jobs, family relations and sometimes even their lives just to be able to read the Bible, pray to the God of the Bible, and have fellowship with other Christians. This is an engrossing and accurate account that chronicles the cost for some of following Christ Jesus.

A final note: I had the privilege of meeting the author and her husband at a gathering in a friend's home. They are the "real deal" - a humble couple who is pressing on, seeking God's guidance one day at a time. I know they would be delighted inasmuch as this book encourages people to pray for the people of Iran and others who are caught in the bondage of Islam.
