First we read Froggy Goes to the Doctor, then this one. We are now in love with Jonathan London's frog family and his main man, Froggy. Lots of needed repetition as Froggy prepares for a picnic with Dad. We are now searching for more Froggy books, and my daughter and I recommend you and your little one do the same! Keep on reading!

My children love this book, the sound effects part of the book keep them laughing from beginning to end. A great introduction to the Froggy series. I would recommend this book for children aged about 4-7.

This book has become my 2 and 4 year olds favorite story. They love to see froggy looking for his misplaced items and it has taught them to look for their own items when they are lost.

Froggy wakes up full of enthusiasm for a day's bike ride and picnic with his dad, but his disorganization keeps them at home until the end of the day. In between, Froggy looks around for assorted biking/picnic items (e.g., a ball, a helmet), slamming and bonking around, and finding them in the most unusual places (what ARE those peaches doing in his bed?!). Each time the two are ready to leave another forgotten item must be found:

"Frrrooggyy!" called his father. "I'm re-e-a-d-y!" yelled Froggy... "But Froggy...you need your bicycle helmet!" "I don't know where it is!..." "It's wherever you left it!" "I forget!" "You have to LOOK for it!" This little routine will sound familiar both to children and those who raise them! There's a happy denouement as both Froggy and his dad finally set out (after deciding they're both so hungry they'd better eat the picnic first-at home!).

Bright, uncluttered pictures, 27 pages, lots of word repetition and cool sound effects make this a treat to listen to and read. A toddler who loved the listening to this book will enjoy returning to it as an older reader (perhaps around grade 2-3).

My five year old son completed the 2007 calendar and really wanted the 2008 for Christmas. It's a great calendar for young kids - very engaging with lots of stickers for holidays and special events. It's a fun way to learn about time and the days of the week and months.

My 5-year old and I have been very happy with this calendar! It has about 200 stickers of holidays and special activity days you can put on with your child that we have had a lot of fun with (a lot more stickers than the Highlights calendar). It also has a blank month page every month for you to draw a picture, which is bordered by simple seasonal pictures and shapes to color in. Great fun!

All year fun and learning...

This is a great calendar to use with my daughters. We have used it the last 2 years and starting our 3rd year. We practice writting letters, learning colors, days of the week and all the months, etc. It helps anticipate celebrations and events or when an activity will be over. The anxiety factor is really reduced for them. We use about 75% of the stickers. When we run out of certain stickers, we just write it in. It's also a why to preserve some artwork from each month we have done. Love it and gave it to several friends and family as a gift.

This is a great calendar. I have been buying them for the past six years for my kids. Each month my kids sit down and color the calendar page for the upcoming month. It is a great way to see the growth in your child's development. At the end of the year the calendar is a great keepsake because you can see the progress in each month's drawing. I really recommend this for a 2-6 yr old. My almost 8 yr old won't be getting one this Christmas because she has outgrown them, but my 4 yr old definately will. I also buy these for late in the year birthday party gifts- they are really cute!

If one wants to understand the debacle or "quagmire" know as the Vietnam War, look no further than this riveting account! In "The Making of a Quagmire," David Halberstam pin points all of the failures of the system years before the first official U.S. troops splash ashore at Danang, Vietnam. His account, a collection of observations about Vietnam under the Diem presidency, is refreshing while at the same time shocking in its findings. While many observers insisted that efforts in Vietnam were progressing so well from 1961-63, Halberstam sees the light. His expose of all the failings of the system includes candid words about the inept south Vietnamese leadership and the American advisors who grow increasingly frustrated with their mission. Most importantly though, Halberstam offers a glimpse into the life of a journalist caught in his own war of censorship.

Before reading this book, my knowledge of the Vietnam war was limited to the movies I had seen on the subject, until recently when a friend recommended this book to me after a brief discussion of the war, its political agenda and its intrigue. Making of a quagmire is an extensive and thourough account of the events in 1961 and 1962 that lead to the eventual full american involvemnt in Vietnam. Halberstam provides an unbeleivable and at times jaw-dropping first hand account of the political and military events of the period, and translates with remarkable skill the frustration of the vicious circle that was the american policy in Vietnam. A must read for any one with even a slight interest in the subject

Outstanding book; this is the wrong edition to buy

Halberstam's work is a classic, outlining the dilemma that Vietnam posed to American policymakers in the early 1960s, and written in lucid, newspaper-reporting style. The author's perceptiveness is particularly striking when one considers that he wasn't even 30 years old when he covered Vietnam.

Unfortunately, this McGraw-Hill edition abridges Halberstam's masterpiece. Most of the essential pieces of the story remain, but much of the rich, colorful narrative, which makes this such a fascinating book, is lost. Hopefully, a complete version will return to print soon.

What Should Be Learned From History

Review Date: 2006-12-18
In the early 1960s, David Halberstam was a New York Times correspondent who initially viewed the U.S. political and military-advisory roles in South Viet Nam as a necessary stance against the Communist menace (as defined by Dwight Eisenhower's "domino theory" in Southeast Asia).

But his pessimism grew during tours of the nation, interviews with American military advisors and his concerns surrounding the corrupt South Vietnamese government of President Ngo Dinh Diem. His criticism became so much of a problem to the Kennedy Administration that the president himself lobbied NYT editors to have Halberstam yanked out of South Viet Nam if his reporting continued to run contrary to the government's optimistic pronoucements.

The abridged edition - to make the text more accessible to those not familiar with this history - is a classic retrospective on how Halberstam grew to question the policies of Diem and Kennedy. It also importantly takes the reader through a journey on how he had to walk gingerly through the web of censorship that is played out between the government & the news media.

This is a great book. My almost 5 year old son keeps asking for it over and over again. Unlike most "real science" books, it has both scientific explanations for things like gravity and the phases of the moon, but also tells a narrative fictional story. As a parent, it's very helpful to have all the answers right there on the same page when your child asks, what is gravity? We can't wait for the next Max book.

I got this book when my son was two and a half and going to
spend sometime at Granny's with her dachshund. He is
so abusive to our cat that I was a bit concerned about what he
might do to her old pooch when she was in the other room.
This book was great. He asked me to read it every day for
two weeks, and when we go out to the park, even though
he is terribly shy with adults, he will ask dog owners diligently,
"May I Pet Your Dog?" before approaching.
The book was well worth the price because I don't worry
about him messing around with strange dogs now.
And it's really a cute book. It won't give your kids
nightmares about saber-toothed dobermans. Mostly,
it teaches etiquette and respect for animals.

Interesting concept... very useful

A straightforward primer to show small children the safest way to meet and approach strange dogs. Although this doesn't provide much in the way of dramatic storytelling, it does offer very practical information, in a way that may appeal to kids. Ask the owners first; show the dog your hand and let them sniff it before you try petting them; pet dogs from the side, not over their heads; pay attention to warning signs like crouching or growling, and don't make direct eye contact with an angry or anxious dog. As a narrative, this is pretty clunky, but even if you only get one or two readings out of it, the information they impart will be very valuable. Good for parents, too! (ReadThatAgain!)

We got this book for our 3-year old daughter (who loved dogs) - and it has been wonderful. There are some great pointers in here about how to approach dogs so that they feel comfortable with you, and you are (consequently) safer interacting with them. She loves the book, and she puts the lessons in there to work with our dogs all the time.

This book should be read to every preschooler & by everyone!

The number of children being bit by dogs is astronomical. This could be drastically reduced, by showing children (& adults) the right way to approach a dog. A child's only experience may be with a friendly dog, or her own dog. Many dogs see an unknown child running up & reaching out at them as a threat and become fearful &/or aggressive. Both responses can cause a dog to bite. Dog bites and attacks can leave lasting physical and emotional scars on a child. Please, read this to your toddler, to your kindergarten class, to any child you are in contact with. Tell everyone you know, that dog bites can be significantly reduced, IF when we see a dog, we know to STOP, ASK the owner if you can pet their dog & only then approach the dog in a non-threatening way. This book is an awesome tool to intruct this information.

The one thing that I remember most about this book is how you could pull it out at any time and just smile as you read it. Now that I am an adult, and have long ago donated my copy, I am now looking for another copy of it. If you have something that makes you feel good, even though you think you may have outgrown it...Hold on to it! It more than likely will still make you smile years down the road!

Good old Amelia Bedelia! When Christmas is just around the corner, she just has to figure out which one! How can such a simple world turn out to be so complicated for America's favorite young housekeeper?

Only hoping to follow directions to the T, Amelia makes a date cake using dates -- but not the fruit kind, the numbers cut from a calendar page! And stuffing stockings for the neighbor's children is sure to be an adventure that defies description!

Merry Christmas, Amelia Bedelia is sure to be a favorite for young readers, and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy learning the wonders of word play!

Highly recommended!

I have to admit I don't quite get Amelia Bedelia's charms, but after reading this book series to countless ESOL students over the years, I have to say, it works like a charm. They love it! I am talking about beginning students in middle school as well as young children. I think that because the students are learning English and we have so many ways of using words and terms, that they identify with Amelia Bedelia. She also goes farther than they would in making mistakes so it seems safer and Ok to admit those mistakes people make when trying to understand many idioms. I think the books have always been successful to me when students are at this reading level.

When I was a kid, I wore Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia out! I probably couldn't tell you much about the plot, but anybody who's ever read an Amelia Bedelia book knows that it's all about her doing everything wrong! The only thing that sticks with me is the picture of Amelia stuffing the Christmas stockings with turkey stuffing, which to this day I find hilarious. I don't know what it is about this one particular story, maybe it's because it's the only Amelia Bedelia book I ever read, but I love it just the same. I my mind, it ranks up there with Charlotte's Web and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; it's just one of those funny, timeless books that fed my lifelong passion for reading and writing.

I've been reading this book to my daughter since she was 6 months old. She loves all of the Miss Spider books. It could be the great colors or the wonderful rhymes. Maybe it's because I adore it too! The best thing about this particular book is the fact that Miss Spider adopts babies who are not spiders. I think teaching kids that loving families don't all look alike is a powerful message. It's never too early to start those good messages.

Squirt learns he can pursue a noble goal - finding the mother of the egg - through lots of dangers. Parents are reassured that they ARE teaching their children to be "brave and good". One of my favorite books... I'll be setting it aside in my kids' "memory boxes" for them to read to their children, and I'm buying more copies for Christmas gifts this year.

This is the best, most extensive book on Native American crafts for children I have ever seen. Teachers doing a unit on Native Americans will find this book a tremendous resource for creating all kinds of not authentic, but good semblances of Native American crafts. Using mostly ordinary materials, there's enough here that you can create a classroom museum and invite others to see it. In your display you can have: miniature teepees and wigwams, an "adobe" house, pottery, "bark" boxes (made of brown paper), chamois and bead pouch, coup stick, breechcloth, leggings, grass anklets (made of yarn), warbonnet, headband, breastplate, and much more. These clothing items can also be used in a play or other enactment. In addition, there are some interesting recipes, including: corn soup, steamed clover, fried squash blossoms, roasted pumpkin seeds, and other more familiar foods.

I am a K teacher and I found this book a great resource for my Native American unit. It has so many activities for that could be used at any grade level! I learned many new things and loved that the children were making and learning about actual Native American games, garb and food. They loved it!

A Most for Any Indian Project

More than Moccasins is this homeschooler's dream come true. Homeschooling a six year old, who is also a very hands-on learner, this book fits the bill. Each section, from Indian dwellings to pottery to traditional games, has activities that are fun and EASY TO DO! Very general household items can be turned into bakeable clay for pottery, teepees, etc. So many books with crafts require tedious materials that are difficult or cumbersome to obtain. Plus each section has a bit of information and history on that particular area of Native American culture ~ short enough for the younger set but detailed enough to provide accurate historical information to go along with the project. There are MORE activities, games, crafts and recipes than you could ever do in an entire unit. This is a book I will return to over and over. GREAT JOB!
