My nieces and I really enjoy Little Critter books

They're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.

This book details a typical visit with a friend, and the havoc two children can wreak.

Little Critter puts it that he always has fun with his friend, but by the end of the day he's glad to be alone, a true sentiment if I ever heard one.

One thing to note is how the illustrations and the text don't always add up, a good introduction to the concept of an unreliable narrator :)

excellent for problem solving!

We bought this book (and most of the Little Critter books) to help us discuss what's going on in our child's life. When problems arose with what it means to be a good friend, we were making little to no headway until we read this book together. Somehow it's easier to understand when it's a favorite book character having the problem and not you.

Just My Friend And Me was a great book. It told you how you would play with your friend when he/she came over. It showed how to help your friend when he/she gets hurt. In someways once you have a friend come over you can't wait for them to leave so you can be a lone and do stuff you want to do and not have someone else want to do something different. Well, I hope this gives you a good idea of what this book is about. I hope all of the little children will enjoy this book. I know I did.

Father's unique understanding of his son's ability to learn
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-11
The author writes with a vivid readable style. He takes us along with him on his quest to help his son learn. Along the way, we meet a variety of clinicians, educators and other experts. Professionals might do well to read these sections to help them understand how strongly their words and actions may affect a distressed parent.

Dr. Roseman had decades of experience compensating for his own AD/HD and learning disabilities. When he discovered that his oldest son had similar difficulties, he determined that his son would have a different experience from his own. Watching his son's struggles and triumphs was an intense experience, unearthing many varied emotional reactions. Dr. Roseman recounts his own memories of the pain and humiliation he experienced as a child when his school and his parents expressed frustration. At the same time, Dr. Roseman remembers how he had been able to use his energy and creativity to find unique ways around his disabilities.

This book emphasizes the need for individualized approaches for AD/HD and learning disabled children. To Dr. Roseman's credit he does not give blanket dismissals to legitimate treatments that did not work well for his particular child.

Not every parent can or should do what this parent did. Many readers will not have the energy, the time or the financial resources to teach their own child. This intense identification between parent and child can be a powerful positive force so long as the parent is able to allow space for other family members and friends.

When Dr. Roseman talks about his long intense periods with minimal sleep, I could understand the rationale of the psychiatrist who wrote a prescription for Lithium. On the other hand, I think of the intense bond between Helen Keller and her teacher. Often intense, passionate involvement enriches our world.

Most childhood development books, while informative, tend to be as compelling as an encyclopedia. Not A Kid Just Like Me. Bruce Roseman's first person account of teaching his learning disabled, ADD son to read is inspiring and enjoyable reading. I think all parents can learn from Dr. Roseman's story. Dr. Roseman has been blessed with a wonderful son, Joshua, whom he loves dearly. Throughout the entire ordeal recounted in the book of dealing with educators, administrators, etc., Dr. Roseman never, ever forgot the love for his child, he never gave up, he always was his child's strongest advocate. While people were telling him and his wife that Joshua would never learn to read, he took control of the situation and taught his son to read. Dr. Roseman is also honest about himself in this book--he admits many time that he was a bit of a pill to those he encountered--again, though, all for his son. Dr. Roseman sent me this book, and asked me to review it. I am so thankful he did. It is a wonderful work that I recommend all parents read. It contains a compelling, heartwarming (although also sometimes heartbreaking) story that will inspire all parents.

A book that might change your life.

I suspected I had ADD for sometime, but never allowed the suspicion to become concrete in my mind. Then I found 'A Kid Just Like Me'. I could not put the book down and finished it less than 24 hours after buying it. I realized that I had read - or sometimes attempted to read - too many books dealing with ADD in abstract terms; I could not recognize myself in those pages. With Dr. Roseman's book the situation was different: His honest, accurate and detailed description of ADD and learning disabilities opened my eyes to my condition. I consider myself lucky to have found this book and wholeheartly recomend it to those who suffer from ADD, kids and adults, and those who love and want to help them.

Dr. Roseman has earned his stripes in parenthood and medicine. This book is inspiring and helpful. He and his son are courageous and capable people. Everyone can learn from this book. It is also well written and lively. I hope learning specialists and teachers at a variety of schools read this book and learn from it. They should really try to understand how parents feel about their children and how they hope for their children, and thus, how dedication and faith can win in the long run.

Once you start this book you won't ever put it down! it has so much empfesis you won't beleive it. and some of the things they do they no aren't right but in the end they do what's right. And after all the research and hard work they come out with six buck's left that would really suck!! it was funny to read the end and their all talking about all the axpenses they had come up with and their really unhappy. We accually had an amazing oportunity, we had the author of this book Kent Titon come to our class and it was really an amazing oportunity to have an author tell you first hand how hard it is to write a book and how many rough drafts they use is quite amazing. and i would like to thank him and his wife who is actually my teacher!!!!!!!! which is really cool because she could help us understand how much work a author goes throught to make a book succesful!!!! And i hope we all see lots more books with kent tiptons name on them!!!!!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I rate it up there with "Where The Red Fern Grows". I read this book as one of my book reports for class and found I couldn't put it down. My grandmother once told me that you can travel anywhere by reading a book and this was that kind of book. I really enjoyed it. Mr. Tipton is a wonderful teacher and author and I can't wait to read the sequel!

Growing up on the shores of the same spring-fed marshes in Springville, Utah, gave me sincere appreciation for R. Kent Tipton's accuracy as a story teller of exceptional ability. Mr. Tipton deftly captures the scenes, the antics, the characters, and the frontier history that bedevilled the perilous coming of age of young boys in a 1950's rural town, dozing at the foot of the great Wasatch Mountains. Boys and girls and curious parents will thoroughly enjoy the rowdy and mischevious plans hatched and relentlessly pursued by fertile imaginations. May Mr. Tipton have the time to regale us with further tales. We await, eagerly.

This book is just what children, as much as adults, need to read. I loved the many humorous episodes. It held my attention from start to finish. I didn't want to put it down.
I wish this book had been written when I was an active librarian. I know the kids would have climbed over one another to check it out. It's clean, funny, and brimming with adventure. The story shows that children can have fun without expensive gadgets and money. The characters, through creativity, show what real fun is all about.
Tipton is a master of words. I hope he sells a million copies or more. Reading Kid Posse is good for the soul. Thank you, Mr. Tipton, for writing it.

Forget the economics slant from other reviewers. In my opinion, this is one of the finest children's books ever written. That it features an interesting, intelligent, fun, individuated girl, moves it to the top of must-have reading.

And if you can get it in the original hardcover, with that simple and wonderful illustration, all the better. There's no need for any fancy-schmancy. This is also the perfect gift for an eleven-year old, as the heroine is exactly that age.

Kid Power is a wonderful book to use to teach the basics of economics to 3-5 graders. The story is very engaging and the way the economics vocabulary is woven throughout the story makes this a great tool for upper elementary teachers. The family interactions ring true and the friendship problems are great discussion springboards. Let's petition to reprint this book! Our schools need it!!

Janie and her sister both want new bikes. But they need to pay for 1/2 (one half) of them. So, Janie, (who spends all her money on comics and chewing gum) forms KID POWER, an organazation made up of one and only one member--herself--that does odd jobs for $1 (one dollar) an hour. Includes lots of facts and terms relating to ecconomics and the money program of the United States. (Reccomended, but a little too unreal.)

My daughter was given this book as a 4th grade reading requirement. She really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. She asked about Gross and Net and it spun me around. I was pleased that she found it exciting. I hope it gets her in the mindset of saving and being more open in life with the same go-get-it personality as the main character. But even if not, my daughter is learning a lot and most of all, she's enjoying it.
This book is a must have for all young girls striving for more than average.

The book is directed towards teens and above which I was not aware while buying it. Regardless of how it is written it includes very basic information that any parent should know and use with their children, including those that can't read yet. I'm staring a Roth IRA for my 4 year old daughter using the tips from the book. The most useful part of this book from the parent perspective is a list of resources to go to for additional information, like the IRS publications, other books or websites to review. Overall very handy resource, but should be priced below $10.

This book is wonderful! It is a great read, and an easy read for any parent teaching their kids about working and what to do with their money. Their is a lot more to it then just saving your money in the bank, and this book does a great job of breaking down the steps of what to do with your money. It even makes suggestions of jobs that children can do, whether it be working for their parents or getting a job outside of the home. My daughter is only 6, but I started teaching her about money and working for her money about a year ago. Of course I did not go into any complicated details, but I felt the younger the better to learn about money and what to do with it. I learned things from this book that I did not know before, so it was not only helpful for me to explain things to my daughter, but it was helpful for me as well, considering I learned some valuable information that I did not know before. I will keep referring back to book as my daughter gets older, and when she is old enough to understand the book on her own, she will read it as well.

Thank you Tracy, for sharing your knowledge, and making learning about investing your kids money not so scary or complicated.

I try very hard to teach my 17 year old strong money lessons.. he needs a job if he wants to have a car, he has to pay the insuarnce on that car.. the gas, it's mandatory that he save 1/2 of every paycheck he gets for "emercencys" etc. But i have to admit, i never thought of him starting a Roth IRA.

We used this book for a little bit of a different reason. This was the first year my son recieved a "w-2" from his very own job. He was so excited to learn he would be getting money back! So it came in the mail and of course "mommy was gonna take care of it". So there it sat.. in my in box for weeks along with all the other to-do's ~ and then I ran across The Kid's ROTH IRA handbook by Tracy Foote. I skimmed through and something caught my eye... on page 93 a chapter started called "Tax Talk - All about tax forms". It was a step by step explanation of how to fill out a 1040 as well as information behind the questions on the form. It has illistrations of what the form and documents look like and shaded areas with extra information to help them along. There is also a Glossary in the back for words they may not have learned yet. It is really geared towards a wide range of tweens/teens, or a fun read for the parent of a smaller child

So, I grabbed the book, his W2, printed off a 1040 from the internet.. and told him good luck.

Within 30 minutes he had his return ready to go LONG FORM, but even better than that it sparked conversations that will help him immensely in his financial future. Before you know it he has refund deposited into his bank account and he is offically a tax paying citizen!

This book is well worth the money and I implore you to enrich your childs financial future with this excellent read.

Teaching children about saving money is critical for their success as adults. This book provides a step-by-step guide on how to teach your children about investing and specifically Roth IRAs. As an adult who had little knowledge on this subject, I found the book easy to understand without it being condescending. My children have both read this book (16 and 10) and were able to understand it completely. Even though they were resistant at first, both of my girls are now eagerly working on saving enough money to start their own Roth IRAs. This is a well thought out book and should be required reading for all parents and children.

Reading Jayne Pearl's excellent book, Kids and Money, I was encouraged to find a roadmap to guide my daughter through the complexities of the financial world. Pearl's practical approach to teaching children ways of handling money from early on can help my child develop a healthy and savvy attitude about money that will serve her well throughout her life. If my parents had a book like this when I was growing up and had taught me more about dealing with money, it might have saved me from struggling with finances in my adult life. Children need a firm foundation in understanding the value of money and knowing what to do, or, what not to do with it. This can only come through conscious, explicit teachings. Pearl encourages dialogue with children and offers a wealth of advice in communicating about this difficult subject.

How many books do you know that have actually improved your life? We're not just talking finances here. This book will change the atmosphere in your family in ways you thought impossible.

Kids and Money convinced us to change our approach to allowances. Not only did we end up spending less by eliminating all those little "off-budget" extras, our kids suddenly became interested in getting value for their dollars. No more extravagant purchases that they wore once and forgot. And they began to take better care of the things they did buy. No more nagging!

Kids and Money is full of great advice on many other subjects. Including how to finance college if you didn't (or couldn't) start saving when the kids were born. And there's a terrific list of web resources at the end.

Jayne A. Pearl shows you how to give your children financial roots and wings. By roots, she means good financial information, values, and ethics. By wings, she means encouraging kids to be confident, independent financial managers. While Jayne Pearl's information is thorough, some of it is specific to U.S. taxation laws and economic structures, which makes the book less useful to an international audience. We... recommend this book to parents who are concerned about their children's financial well being, and to those who need a refresher on good spending habits.

Jayne Pearl's Kids And Money: Giving Them The Savvy To Succeed Financially is a thoughtful, easy-to-understand, well-written parental guide to a the sticky conundrum of teaching children from age 4 to 18 on how to be responsible with their money. Various money-related milestones, from allowances and first jobs to credit cards and college, are all carefully navigated with frank, friendly wisdom. Tougher issues such as shoplifting, gambling, and overspending are also discussed, with practical advice for the wide gamut of family money situations. In an increasingly modern society where a few clicks of the computer mouse can drain one's credit card account as fast as electrical information can travel, money savvy is more important than ever, making Kids And Money a "must" for any parent whose children aren't already majoring in finance.

Financial matters to me are a big yawn, so it was great to read a book that made money something even I could understand. I don't know whether I've always handled my son's financial education in the best fashion, so it was reassuring to know that it isn't too late to make up for lost time. This book did a superb job of giving me actionable advice and -- for my husband and son -- lots of great websites to go to for more information. (Males will read anything that is on a website!) This book also makes a good reference for financial situations as they arise. My 11-year-old is nowhere near ready for college, but I'll keep the book handy for when the time comes...

We've been reading on the internet and other travel books in preparation, but came across this one and thought we would give it a try. It's excellent. In addition to being full of good travel advice and things to look for that are fun for kids of all ages, it is also a good "study guide" of sorts. We homeschool our children and this is the kind of book that is perfect to help teach them about a new country and culture. I highly recommend it.

My kids (and I) think this book rocks. We happen to live in Italy but, even after 18 months here, we still find things in this book that surprise us. The book makes historical sites interesting and fun by pointing out things that kids would find fun and interesting. We have explored "Strange Parks" and located almost all of the license plates and cars listed as we travel around Italy. I'm always surprised as I read it to find more information that I didn't know, more things to try and places to go. We hope to go to Paris soon and I'll be ordering a copy of Pat Byrne's Paris book first.

They liked that they didn't have to bring the entire journal around with them; they could just take out the pages that they needed. Even my teens took some ideas, like charting gelato flavors. (Same flavor changed from place to place.) The journal made some of the lesser kid-friendly activities more enjoyable for them, therefore, more enjoyable for us. We are looking out for journals for more countries.

I am currently a student enrolled in the ECOT High School and I when I discovered this book I was excited to read it. I quickly bought myself a copy and couldn't put it down!! I think that more ECOT students need to read this book--it will really open your eyes and show you just how much work went into starting this school. ECOT has been wonderful for me because of my medical situation and I think this book made me appreciate it even more. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!!! Please read this book--it is definitely worth it!!

This is a great 'behind the scenes' look at one man's struggle to establish the nation's first public e-school. Sadly enough, many of the struggles the author faced stem from resistance posed by the educational establishment and its drive for self-preservation. While one might glibly assume a profit motive, the book reveals to us how the author's personal experiences drove him to beat the odds and make ECOT a reality. Rather than a money-making scheme, ECOT emerges as a labor of love.

One wonderful feature that maintained my interest was the student case history featured at the beginning of each chapter. These testimonials from successful ECOT graduates paint a wide and varied portrait of today's American students and the challenges they face. From school violence to teen pregnancy, lack of motivation, family illness and the demands of work, we get a firsthand account of the issues these students face and how the availability of publicly funded home e-schooling allowed them to cross the educational finish line.

Being one of the students featured in the book, I was thrilled when I first found out about the book. Upon reading it, I finally realizd how moch sweat and back breaking work went into ECOT. It truely has revolutionized the way that anyone will go to school. I enjoyed the time that I spent there, and can't wait until the day that it appears around the world.

I thought from the get-go, the book was mainly about Mr. Lager's approach to starting a school of this caliber, and I was right. From an idea to reality, this book really details what really went into making ECOT anything but an idea on a drawing board. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the future of schooling as we know it for one reason. It's here, alive and well and ready to go.

Bill Lager has truly changed the way I think about education. No more finger pointing, he has taken responsibility that the traditional education system can't - or won't. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in alternative forms of education for K-12 and for those who don't believe that online education can work. Lager has proven it can, and will - for a long time to come.

This was a great book; I really enjoyed reading it. More than anything, I loved reading the stories about the students whom were apart of the first e-classroom. This book proves a very important lesson; if you work hard and believe fully in what you are working at, anything is possible.

This book provides a brief introduction to soccer, at the right level of detail for those new to the game. My 11-year-old son found the summary of the rules and strategies quite helpful. As a new coach, I was glad to have a compact volume that included most of what I needed to know. There are other books that provide more detail on the game and more exercises and drills for soccer players -- but this is the ideal "first book" for someone just learning about the game. I recommend it highly.

Very helpful and easy to understand.

I am the first time coach of a second grade boys soccer team. This book was very easy to understand for the kids as well as myself. For kids that are relatively new to the game it explains positions, the different kinds of kicks and the all around basics of soccer without getting too technical. It has been a great aid for our team.

As a long time recreation coach and soccer parent, Brooks Clark offer the side of the game perfect for all coaches just starting out, or for any parents who know little about the game their children are playing. Concise and fun, a great read for the basic rules and strategies of soccer.
