Security GeneralismReview Date: 2000-06-03
An excellent beginningReview Date: 2003-05-16
The text covers fundamentals (a TCP/IP networking overview, OSI Architecture, various cryptographic techniques and the attacks they are designed to thwart), access control (explaining packet-filters, application and circuit level gateways, and firewalls), and communications protocols/security (Network Access Layer, Internet Layer, Transport Layer, Application Layer, and message security protocols). Also included is a chapter on Public Key Infrastructures. The book is almost totally focused on teaching theory, with only scant attention paid to real-world implementations. This is not a drawback. If a student learns everything this book has to offer, then that will be a huge advantage when it comes time to turn one's attention towards actual applications.
Most topics that Oppliger discusses include a brief history of the subject. This allows the student to really get a handle on why a system evolved in the way that it did. Also helpful are the numerous pointers to web pages and other texts to supplement the information given here. This book is mostly text-based; pictures, figures and tables are present but used sparingly.
Overall, I would recommend this book to any student new to the field or any novice looking for insight into the topics of computer network security. It casts a very wide net, and while most specifics will be given more depth in other, more specialized books, the amount of information revealed here is more than adequate.

I was expecting more from the title and desciptionReview Date: 2005-02-05
I've read lots of books on trading (technical analysis through day trading to options and futures) and this one could put me to sleep.. The thing that bothers me the most is there are no pictures or drawings of a level II screen anywhere in the book and in fact there are no screen shots or diagrams of anykind on anything...
The strategy is to utilize your capital with stop loses and route your order efficiently... I'm halfway through this book but it never seems to get into gear.. Flipping through the pages I can see I'm not missing much... I will finish reading it completely but not until I get a new bottle of asprin...
The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of less is because it is still well written but disappointing sorry.. You can uncross your eyes now...

Most of the day trading books of 1998-2001 are terribly obsolete. Not so, this one.
If you are new to trading, or have up to five years experience with direct access trading, you will gain trading ideas from this book.
Sales gets quickly into real trading and does not fill the book with introductory dribble. For example, as early as page 17 he writes about details of good trading practices, such as factoring in a chase point (for slippage) for entries and exits.
The first part of the book is the author's own experienced based advice.
That is followed by interviews with several normal traders with substantially differing trading styles.
Experienced traders will recognize that some of these folks are probably no longer trading, by the nature of their stories and ideas, while others have good ideas that apply well to the markets of 2002.
A very worthwhile read.
