This book is likable for several different reasons....It provides a social anthropology of children and teens and allows readers to peer into the lives of diverse teens. Some quotes are eye opening and others are confirming of my perceptions of teens. The photos selected are very good and stand on their own merit. I like how this book is written and photographed by teens, so it's not like those dense theses by ivory tower scholars writing about what they think teens arelike.

How insightful!

Great for for someone stepping into D-SLR world

It is a great book for someone considering or just bought a new digital SLR. Besides the basics and theories, it also tell us what kind of "gadgets" we need to get for our cameras.

Excellent book for a beginner

I got this book from my local library before I got my camera. It was incredibly helpful in many areas. I used the information to pick which dSLR camera to get. Then I used it to help me pick which lens to buy to go with my kit lens. Now I am using it to learn more about how to take good pictures. This book is a wealth of information! Now I just have to decide if I want to shell out the money for it when I can keep getting it from the library.

One thing that I like about this book is that it doesn't try and persuade you towards one brand or a another. Some books are very obviously pro-this or pro-that, and it is hard to get a non-biased opinion. I felt that this book was pretty neutral in that sense.

Helped Me Make Some Decisions
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-18
I got this book because I am finally taking the plunge into digital photography. I wanted two books. One book would look at all the digital cameras that are avaiable and tell me which one to buy. I found this information in Consumers Report.

But beyond that, I had a bunch of questions as to what the various features and specifications really mean, and what are the differences in taking digital vs. film pictures. From my experience with film photography I knew that I wanted a single lens camers. I didn't want to carry around a bunch of lenses. And the single lens needed to be a zoom with the ability to focus up close for macro work.

This book answered the questions I had, and many more that I didn't even know I had. It covers the digital zoom cameras on a conceptual basis, it does not pick out a particular brand. But it talks about zoom lenses. It talks about macro lens adapters (I need to try out the particular camera I ordered before making decisions about what, if anything, I need in this area). More important it talked about the differences in film and digital in areas like color sensitivity, and the digital equivalents of the ISO film speeds. Like I said, it talks about things that I never thought to ask.

The few bucks that this book costs will be well paid back in either choosing the right camera or in getting better pictures.

VERY Helpful Book!!

I have been shooting digital for four years. I like especially to do wildlife photography. I have a digital zoom camera (Minolta Dimage Z2). Have gotten very frustrated though because the quality of my photos just wasn't good enough (in my opinion, but when I show them around to family and at work, they ooh and aah). Anyway, was almost getting ready to chuck my camera and invest $2000 in a digital SLR setup. Then I read this book. Wow, it explained so much to me about how to better manipulate the settings on my digital zoom camera to get the best quality from my unit. It also helped my understand the limitations of my unit as compared to film and digital SLRs. So armed with this knowledge, I am not coughing up $2000 for another setup, but I am going to continue working with the equipment I have and using the settings properly to enhance my photography.

I highly recommend this book as it was well-written, concise, with lots of great illustrations and recommendations. If you own a digital zoom camera or are trying to decide between purchasing a digital zoom vs a digital SLR, this book is a must read. It will help you a lot.

We've all seen the 3D pictures where you wear red/blue 3D glasses to see them - kind of interesting. But this is like same process on steroids. Never seen 3 D pictures that pop off the page in full color like this. I can't stop looking at them. There's also websites where you can see more 3 D images, and guess what, if you're wearing your red-blue glasses, on line 3D images are just like being there. You also learn how they make them (you can do it with Photoshop and 2 cameras, but there's some interesting twists in the process),

This book is full of amazing close-up nature photographs to be viewed through the enclosed 3-D glasses. This book is a good choice for children of all ages to encourage them to appreciate nature. It is a good choice for adults because the pages literally leap to life in such an intriguing way. You don't have to be a nature lover to be fascinated by these pictures.

Good Overview

This book was a good overview of equine photography. I am an intermediate photographer with moderate horse knowledge. It was easy to understand and implement - even with my lower level skills. The pictures in the book were amazing! Most of the book covered photography, but the video part was very informative and simple to understand. I would definitely recommend this book if you are going to photograph or video horses even just for fun.

I am a fairly experienced photographer who has recently taken up horse show photography. I found this book very, very helpful--especially the sections on the particular phase of each gait which will result in the best photo. I purchased this and Lesli Groves' book, and found them to compliment each other--but if I could only buy one, it would be this one. Specifically, the 'troubleshooting' and 'planning the perfect shot' chapters are excellent; I am equally enthusiastic about the chapters he on computers, printers, and paper. The examples clearly explain the text. I learned a lot from this book, and my first photo practice session showed a significant improvement in my work.

Invaluable Guide for Photography

Review Date: 2006-08-06
This is a large hardcover book printed on glossy paper that is about 10" wide and 12" long. At the listed price of $6.88 it is a true steal. It has a very thick and strong binder. There are very few pages that don't have photographs and many that have several, mostly color, which illustrate the text. There must be 500 photos in all.

Though half the book is dedicated to film photography, don't let that bother you at all. The photography principals the authors explore are almost all applicable to digital photography.

This is not a highly technical book like Ben Long's "Complete Book of Digital Photography" but rather it glances over the basic technical details of aperture shutter speed, depth of field etc. where Ben Long tackles them in great detail. Instead this masterpiece covers photographic techniques such as how to shoot portraits, landscapes, macro subjects, close-ups and the principles of composition etc. It explains how to take advantage of natural light and the ways to improve your flash pictures, and all with photos to back up the authors' explanations.

I feel it is a great companion to Ben Long's book. They are perfect compliments to one another. I have just moved from film to digital and feel myself very fortunate to have purchased these two fine books.

I have not yet reached the part that emphasizes digital photography but even if all those pages were blank, the book would still be an incredible value.

Great Photography Book!

This is the perfect book for people who want to learn photography. The descriptions make sense and are illustraded with beautiful sample pictures. This book talks about film types, how aperture and shutter speed works, filters, camera accessories, etc. I've had my camera for years and I had never quite understood all its capabilities but this book has made it easy to finaly "get the picture" ;-) I know I still have a lot to learn but at least I have the basics now. This book is also good for those photographers that want to learn about digital photography and how it works. They money I paid for this book was well spent.

Are you the type that doesn't want to read an entire book just to get a quick answer? Do you like step by step instructions? Normally step by step instructions means that you need to do the entire book in order. This is great when you are learning to use an application and actually make something as well. But for the times when you want a quick answer AND get it step by step, this book fits the bill.

This book is a step by step reference. It is laid out in a very logical manner and covers the huge range of subjects for Photoshop CS. You can even use it if you have previous versions of Photoshop. The appendix lists all the new features of Photoshop CS and Image Ready CS.

I always love good quality paper in a book and this one not only has great paper but the layout is clean and crisp. Each task includes features such as tips, keyboard shortcuts and cross references. Another feature I particularly like is the interface images have letters in the image to match the description. This makes it easier for you to match the feature in writing to the feature in the interface. This is also done for many of the dialog boxes. There are also PC and MAC screen shots. When the MAC is different, a screen shot is included to show the difference.

Chapters 1-5 includes tasks covering the interface and tools.

Chapters 6-18 has tasks that are universal, such as opening, saving, working with color, canvas, selections, layers, masks, fills, filters, styles, paths, typography and automation. As you can see this covers a huge amount of information and tasks required to tap into the power of Photoshop.

Chapters 19-22 covers photos and videos.

Chapters 23-25 covers print tasks.

Chapters 26-29 covers web tasks.

If you want an answer fast or simply need to brush up on a new technique or tool then this book is the perfect step by step Photoshop CS reference book! When I want to get a quick answer, I reach for this book. I can easily use the index to locate the tool/task I need, go to it, do, it and get out.

I like this book's task approach. Many times I just want to know how to do a specific thing. I can look up that task in this book and see exactly how to do it. Photoshop is very difficult to learn, but this book does a good job of simplifying the most common tasks. Thanks!

I must say this book has caught my interest since the day it hit the shelves. I've been in Graphic Designs for nearly 9 years and photography nearly 2, reading this book opens up a a different point of view toward Digital Photography for not only you the graphic designer, but you the photographer as well!

Colin Smith points out numerous issues involving Digital Photography starting from your camera raw files, correcting the colors, organizing, creating simple web galleries and also explaining different ways to viewing your subjects before taking your shot.

Colin basicly gets Down & Dirty in explaining the values and benifits in Photoshop, understanding your histograms, curves and the ever so popular levels is a key factor when it comes to designing and print.

Are you looking for a book about the Mac version of Photoshop Elements 6? Due to the delay between the shipping dates of the Windows and Mac versions, I wasn't able to include Mac-specific information in this title. However, 95% of the Windows book applies to the Mac version of the program, down to the interface elements. The major difference is that the Windows version uses the Organizer to catalog and organize photos, while the Mac uses Bridge CS3 to do the same.

So if you're looking for Visual QuickStart Guide instruction for the Mac version of Elements 6, this edition delivers it.
